Domhnall Gleeson and Andrea Riseborough in “Alice and Jack”

Show PBS some love this St. Patrick’s Day when “Alice & Jack” makes its premiere on Masterpiece. Starring Irish actor and screenwriter Domhnall Gleeson (“Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2,” 2011) and English actress Andrea Riseborough (“To Leslie,” 2022), the six-episode drama series premieres Sunday, March 17, on the network. While “Alice & Jack” premieres to North American audiences midway through the month of March, it first premiered on England’s Channel 4 this past Valentine’s Day (Feb. 14) — a timely release due to the ongoing romantic theme of the series.

The six-episode series, which was created by “Mad About You” and “Mad Men” producer Victor Levin, spans 15 years and “explores the seminal question of whether the bonds between us are stronger than the forces that would tear us apart” (per PBS).

When Jack (Gleeson), a calm, reserved scientist, meets a young, tightly wound financier named Alice (Riseborough), the pair instantly hit it off despite their many differences in both lifestyle and personality. They spend just one night together before returning to their separate lives, but over the course of a decade and a half, Jack and Alice meet repeatedly — often by chance — and begin to question what it is about the other person that keeps them both coming back.

Described by Fremantle, the show’s distribution company, as a “love story for the ages,” “Alice & Jack” is arguably a more realistic representation of romance in the modern world than the traditional meet-cute romantic comedy. With so many possibilities to interfere with love, trust and friendship these days, the nature of our relationships have changed drastically, and TV fans need look no further than these star-crossed lovers for confirmation.

Following the series’ September 2023 premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, PBS Masterpiece executive Suzanne Simpson described “Alice & Jack” as “exceptionally beautiful and profound” and added that Masterpiece is “proud to add” it to their lineup. And while it is easy to praise the show for its will-they-won’t-they quality that has every hopeless romantic on the edge of their seat, critics, such as Marya E. Gates of RogerEbert.com, are just as quick to point out that “Alice & Jack” is far from a fairytale romance.

“As each character does unthinkable things, Levin’s script slowly reveals emotional layers that color why they might make such decisions, asking viewers to examine the thornier sides of life,” writes Gates, later adding that the miniseries is “more honest about human behavior than most romances allow.”

Masterpiece romance: Lasting love takes to the screen in ‘Alice & Jack’

All this said, the heavy subject matter and at times brutal honesty do not weigh the series down, a feat that is largely due to moments of comic relief on the part of the supporting cast. Chief among these providers of levity is Aisling Bea, who plays Jack’s later-in-life partner, Lynn. Bea, now best known for her work in the Irish comedy “This Way Up” and the lowkey sci-fi dramedy “Living With Yourself,” is gaining popularity stateside for her quick wit and cheerful banter — a welcome addition to the uncertainty brought to the screen by Alice and Jack.

Whether you are in the mood to celebrate the little things that bring us together or mourn the sticking points that tear us apart, PBS’s newest television experience, “Alice & Jack,” has you covered.

‘Tootsie’

laughs and truths classic corner

remains full of

One of the great contemporary movie comedies, “Tootsie” — which MGM+ presents Thursday, March 21 — is very smart and genuinely funny, while also being an incisive look at the challenges often faced by those in the acting profession. Certainly, not everyone goes to the extent of Dustin Hoffman’s character to land and keep a job in front of audiences, but there’s still plenty of truth to the humor that’s involved.

Hoffman plays Michael Dorsey, a struggling performer trying to help a friend (Teri Garr) land a role on a daytime-television serial. When she doesn’t get it, he decides to pursue it himself ... as “Dorothy Michaels,” disguising himself to convince others that he’s a woman, and one capable of playing very conservative new hospital administrator Emily Kimberly. The charade prompts a series of great one-liners from Bill Murray as Michael/”Dorothy’s” perplexed roommate. Director Sydney Pollack’s 1982 film earned an Oscar for Jessica Lange as a co-star of the soap of whom Michael is quite enamored; the cast also includes Dabney Coleman and Charles Durning.

more retro rewinds

“The Day After Tomorrow” (FX, Monday, March 18): If you think this winter has been cold, just watch what happens in this 2004 sci-fi drama from director and co-writer Roland Emmerich (“Independence Day”). A storm ravages Earth, causing sub-freezing conditions around the globe … and having a very personal aspect for a climate expert (Dennis Quaid) whose son (Jake Gyllenhaal) is stranded in New York with classmates. Terrific visual effects make up a big component of the film, particularly as a tidal wave hits Manhattan, carrying through the streets everything that’s in its path — even including ships.

“Brian’s Song” (Turner Classic Movies, Friday, March 22): One of the most successful and popular of all TV-movies, this true 1971 drama did much for the careers of James Caan and Billy Dee Williams. They star respectively as Chicago Bears teammates Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, who were gridiron rivals but also friends whose relationship grew even tighter as one of them faced a health crisis. The film’s five Primetime Emmy wins included one for co-star Jack Warden as Coach George Halas; the picture is one of the rare television productions to also get a theatrical release later.

Kish’s kitchen: ‘Top Chef’ returns with a new twists and all-star host

Things are shaking up in “Top Chef” with new rules and a new host when it returns Wednesday, March 20, on Bravo.

Following Padma Lakshmi’s (“Taste the Nation with Padma Lakshmi”) departure from the series last summer, this beloved cooking competition will now be led by “Top Chef” Season 10 winner Kristen Kish (“Fast Foodies”), who is no stranger to the highs, lows and boiling tempers that can erupt when chefs are faced with non-stop, increasingly difficult challenges.

As per previous seasons, Kish will be joined by returning judges Gail Simmons (“Star Plates”) and Tom Colicchio (“Best New Restaurant”) — and see some exciting celebrity guests, such as Carla Hall (“Girls Trip,” 2017), Brittany Snow (“Pitch Perfect,” 2012) and Matty Matheson (“The Bear”) — as the group heads to the midwest to America’s Dairyland: Wisconsin.

In an exclusive sneak peek for the upcoming season, shared jointly by People, Entertainment Weekly and Food & Wine, Kirsh reveals that this time around, they’ve “gathered rising star chefs from across the country here to Wisconsin,” allowing viewers a glimpse at the competing cooks and a taste of what’s to come.

Judge Tom Colicchio takes over from there, explaining the newly changed rules of the game, as this time around there will be no immunity given for Quickfire wins. Following the Quickfire, the winning chef in question was previously awarded a prize, an advantage or immunity going into the elimination challenge. Now, however, the only surefire way to stay safe and remain another week is to make it through the elimination challenge unscathed.

Even when eliminated, however, the game doesn’t stop there. Popular tie-in web series “Last Chance

Kitchen” returns alongside the season premiere, offering eliminated chefs an opportunity to prove their worth and potentially make their way back into the competition through skills-oriented challenges.

“This isn’t going to be easy,” Colicchio explains, closing out the sneak peek. “At the end of this, there’s only one person left. You got to make sure it’s you.”

With 15 contestants — ranging from James Beard Award finalists to chefs running Michelin-starred restaurants — the competition is sure to be fierce, with each chef determined to win the life-changing title and a prize of $250,000.

Sharpen your knives: the cutthroat competition kicks off when Season 21 of “Top Chef” premieres Wednesday, March 20, on Bravo.

BEST IRELAND MOVIES

John Wayne in “The Quiet Man”

“The Quiet Man” (1952): The ultimate Ireland movie in the eyes of many, director John Ford’s classic stars John Wayne as a returnee to Ireland who’s determined to capture the heart of a lass (Maureen O’Hara) despite her brother’s (Victor McLaglen) interference. Turner Classic Movies presents the film as the second half of a St. Patrick’s Day double feature Sunday, March 17.

“Finian’s Rainbow” (1968):

This Francis Ford Coppola-directed musical is loaded with the charm of Ireland, along with the tuneful work of Fred Astaire, Petula Clark and Tommy Steele.

“Barry Lyndon” (1975):

Director Stanley Kubrick’s lengthy, scenic drama stars Ryan O’Neal as an Irishman who weds a widow (Marisa Berenson), seeking to succeed her late husband aristocratically.

“My Left Foot” (1989):

Daniel Day-Lewis earned his first of three Oscars by playing Christy Brown, who overcame major physical challenges to make his mark artistically.

“The Crying Game” (1992): So many years later, no one should give away the twist of writer-director Neil Jordan’s drama about an IRA member’s (Stephen Rea) relationship that has a background in tragedy.

“Michael Collins” (1996): Liam Neeson has the title role of the revolutionary who led forces against the British.

“Angela’s Ashes” (1999): Based on Frank McCourt’s autobiography, this drama recalls his childhood, with Emily Watson and Robert Carlyle as his parents.

“Bloody Sunday” (2002): Paul Greengrass used many of the techniques that have made him a top action director (“Jason Bourne”) in this unsettling dramatization of Ireland’s civil war.

“Once” (2007): The Dublin love story of two people (Glen Hansard, Marketa Irglova) is traced musically.

“P.S. I Love You” (2007): A sizable chunk of this romantic comedy-drama is a flashback to the heroine’s (Hilary Swank) first meeting with her late husband (Gerard Butler) during an overseas trip.
