WAGONER — Retired teacher
Charla Vaught stitched some secrets into the quilt she made for this year’s Wagoner Education Foundation fundraiser.
The quilt features a feisty bulldog and the caption “48 consecutive Football Wins, 2014-2017.” Look carefully and you’ll see words and bulldog paw prints stitched into the quilt.
“I’m calling the quilt Snips, Snails and Bulldog Trails,” Vaught said.
She showed how her wandering stitches represent a dog’s trail.
Vaught’s quilt will be auctioned at the Wagoner Education Foundation’s annual Fashion Show and Quilt Auction, 6 p.m. Monday at the First Baptist Church multipurpose activity center. The show also will feature a light meal, plus a silent auction featuring art pieces by Wagoner artists and items from area businesses.
Tickets are $20.
“Bulldog Trails” marks the fifth quilt Vaught has made for the annual fundraiser. Four quilts have featured Wagoner’s bulldog mascot.
“I enjoy quilting,” she said. “I’m a retired Wagoner High School teacher,
WHAT: Fashion Show and Quilt Auction.
WHO: Wagoner Education Foundation.
WHEN: 6 p.m. Monday.
WHERE: Multipurpose Activity Center, First Baptist Church, 401 N.E. Second St., Wagoner.
TICKETS: $20, available at Wagoner Flowers and Gifts or any Foundation board member.
and quilting is a way I can give back to the community.”
Vaught taught family and consumer science at WHS.
“When I was in high school, I thought I wanted to get into art,” she said. “This is my outlet.”
Vaught said she designed, stitched and put backing on each quilt she made for auction.
Such attention to detail has paid off.
Wagoner Education Foundation
President Janet Lane said the quilt Vaught made for last year’s auction raised more than $1,000. Lane said

Charla Vaught stitched a bulldog paw into a quilt she made for the Wagoner Education Foundation Fashion Show and Quilt Auction. This is the fourth year she has made and donated a quilt.

After last year’s error heard ‘round the world, with “La La Land” declared best picture – instead of the movie actually specified in the envelope, “Moonlight” – ABC late-night host Jimmy Kimmel returns for the second consecutive year to preside over the network’s broadcast of the 90th Oscar ceremony Sunday, March 4. Presented again from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, the event is sure to reflect the new consciousness about sexual misconduct that has rocked the entertainment industry in recent months. However, Kimmel also wants the occasion to be the fun that it’s always been for movie lovers.
“I think it’s important to make the people in the room laugh,” he reasons, ”and if the people in the room laugh, the audience at home will at least … you know, we’ve been conditioned to react to a laugh track since probably the ’50s. And I think it’s important for the audience at home to hear people laughing, maybe even more important than making them laugh themselves.”- By Jay Bobbin

this year’s quilt is valued at more than $750.
The auction is part of a fashion show, featuring 12 teachers as models. Fashions will come from Rock-N-Mama’s boutique in Wagoner, plus Bella Mea’s and Dillard’s in Muskogee.
Teacher models are Ginger
Luna, Melanie Kennedy and Corey Tipton from Wagoner High School; Regina Darden and Lewinda Giddens from Wagoner Middle School; Denise Dunn and Morgan Thompson from Central; Lindsey Gardenhire and Angela Chaffin from Teague Elementary; and Brandon Carr, Melissa Nail and Debbie Caughman from Ellington.
Gardenhire, who teaches second grade, said she’s modeling because the Foundation is import-
ant for the school.
Teague Elementary Principal Penny Janko said the Wagoner Education Foundation “helps tremendously.”
“A lot of our teachers apply for grants,” Janko said. “We bought different types of seating for students, a reading curriculum.”
Third-grade teacher Emily Myers got ball chairs and other types of seats to help some students remain focused in class.
Third-grader Lydia Watkins
uses one of the ball chairs.
“When you bounce on it, it helps you focus,” Lydia said.
Lane said the Wagoner Education Foundation awarded more than $15,000 in grants last August. She said the 2017 fashion show and auction raised more than $12,000.
Tickets may be purchased from Wagoner Flowers and Gifts or any foundation board member.
Board members are Janet Lane, Charla Vaught, Beth Ann French,

John Chandler, Cristy Collier and Karen Jackson. The competition begins Monday morning with students from about 20 high schools participating. Community members are welcome to drop by and listen as
long and as much as they want, said Dr. Clark Gibson, jazz saxophonist, composer and director of Jazz Studies at NSU.
The public is also invited to a tribute to Jimmy Smith and Oliver Nelson on Monday at 7 p.m. in the NSU Center for the Performing Arts. Tickets are available through the Sequoyah Institute.
“Pat Bianchi travels the world, playing organ and piano, and is full-time organist for Pat Martino. He’s played with everybody,” Gibson said.
Now in his third year at NSU, Clark enjoys bringing in world-renowned guest

artists.
“If it weren’t for the Jazz Lab and its history, these artists wouldn’t come here. It provides a platform,” said Gibson, noting that NSU was the first college in the state to offer Jazz Studies as a degree. “I like the arts that it brings to the community.”
Gibson said that from Joe Davis on, the Jazz Lab has had a rich culture of bringing this art form to Tahlequah, and that it is important to have students learn about jazz as part of American history and culture.
“A lot of jazz groups came from this area, like the Blue Devils,” he said. “And many have performed here, like Count Basie, Buddy Rich, Wynton Marsalis, Kevin Mahogany, Diana
Kroll, Benny Green, Russell Malone and Doc Severinsen.”
Inside the Jazz Lab piano are about 60 signatures of famous musicians, Gibson said.
Next year, Tia Fuller, Beyonce’s sax player, will perform.
“Me and Tia kind of grew up together, played together,” he said.
Gibson started playing when he was 12 and living in Denver, Colorado. As a young man, he started his own group, the Clark Gibson Quartet, which was nominated for Best Jazz Group in Colorado.
“Why jazz? I fell in love with Charlie Parker. The first time I heard him, I was sold,” Gibson said.
Rhythmic and harmonic language is derived from jazz and blues, according to Gibson.
He led his own band as a young man before going on the road with the Tommy

Dorsey orchestra. College wasn’t a priority until he turned 28.
“Jazz continues to decline as a performing art form; even famous artists are looking to move into academia,” he said, adding that it is no less essential to a great musician. “Jazz is the basis of American popular music; it’s the foundation. By learning jazz as an art form, you can play country, R&B – it all comes from the same language. Rock ‘n’ roll developed out of swing music in the 1940s – we’re talking pre-Elvis.”
One of the best experiences of kismet for Gibson was when a friend in New York found music scores that had been arranged with strings for Charlie Parker, but not recorded. Gibson was able perform and record some of this music and, in 2015, he released “Charlie Parker with Strings: The Lost Arrangements,” through BluJazz Records.
“For the future of jazz studies to grow at NSU, it’s important for the program to evolve. All the successful college music programs are going to music technology, music business and music

entrepreneurship,” said Gibson. “I hope NSU’s music department continues to evolve to serve students in the 21st century. For NSU to continue to do well and improve, we have to offer
something recognizing the needs and interests of current students in this niche market.”
Gibson said the NSU Jazz Studies department brings artists from places
such as New York and Los Angeles so students and the community can hear the best of what’s out there. He will be performing as a guest artist with the Tulsa Symphony on May 12.

Though Jimmy Kimmel doesn’t expect another misstep in the announcement of an Academy Award winner, he concedes he wouldn’t mind if it happened.
After last year’s error heard round the world, with “La La Land” declared best picture –instead of the movie actually specified in the envelope, “Moonlight” – ABC late-night host Kimmel returns for the second consecutive year to preside over the network’s broadcast of the 90th Oscar ceremony Sunday, March 4. Presented again from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre, the event is sure to reflect the new consciousness about sexual misconduct that has rocked the entertainment industry in recent months. However, Kimmel also wants the occasion to be the fun that it’s always been for movie lovers.
“I think it’s important to make the people in the room laugh,” he reasons, “and if the people in the room laugh, the audience at home will at least ... you know, we’ve been conditioned to react to a laugh track since probably the ’50s. And I think it’s important for the audience at home to hear people laughing, maybe even more important than making them laugh themselves.”
Regarding the awards themselves, vote counter and envelope guard PricewaterhouseCoopers has instituted several new rules to prevent last year’s nowlegendary wrong-winner gaffe from reoccurring. Still, Kimmel muses, “If it happens again, literally everyone that works at ABC should be fired, right? If it happens one time, that’s, I think, understandable. But if it happens a second time, no one
(there) is competent enough to be running a television show or network ... so I don’t think it’s going to happen again. If it did, I would have to admit, it would tickle me deeply.”
Here are the nominees in several major categories for the 90th Oscars:
Best picture: “Call Me by Your Name”; “Darkest Hour”; “Dunkirk”; “Get Out”; “Lady Bird”; “Phantom Thread”; “The Post”; “The Shape of Water”; “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Best director: Paul Thomas Anderson, “Phantom Thread”; Guillermo del Toro, “The Shape of Water”; Greta Gerwig, “Lady Bird”; Christopher Nolan, “Dunkirk”; Jordan Peele, “Get Out”
Best actor: Timothee Chalamet, “Call Me by Your Name”; Daniel Day-Lewis, “Phantom Thread”; Daniel

Kaluuya, “Get Out”; Gary Oldman, “Darkest Hour”; Denzel Washington, “Roman J. Israel, Esq.”
Best actress: Sally Hawkins, “The Shape of Water”; Frances McDormand, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”; Margot Robbie, “I, Tonya”; Saoirse Ronan, “Lady Bird”; Meryl Streep, “The Post” Best supporting actor: Willem Dafoe, “The Florida Project”; Woody Harrelson, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”; Richard Jenkins, “The Shape of Water”; Christopher Plummer, “All the Money in the World”; Sam Rockwell, “Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri”
Best supporting actress: Mary J. Blige, “Mudbound”; Allison Janney, “I, Tonya”; Lesley Manville, “Phantom Thread”; Laurie Metcalf, “Lady Bird”; Octavia Spencer, “The Shape of Water”

Mindy Kaling is its co-creator and one of its executive producers, but the most memorable name associated with “Champions” may well turn out to be J.J. Totah.
The young performer proves himself a comedic and musical dynamo in the NBC sitcom premiering Thursday, March 8. He plays a teen delivered to New York by his mother (Kaling, in a recurring role) to live with his father (Anders Holm, who also worked with Kaling on “The Mindy Project”), who’s hugely unequipped to be an instant dad as he ponders selling the familyrun gymnasium. Andy Favreau (brother of actor-director Jon) and another “Mindy Project” alum, Fortune Feimster, also star.
Since Totah’s Michael has his sights set on a performing-arts school, it may not come as a surprise that the actor has “Glee” among his previous credits. “I had gotten the script before I even got the audition,” Totah says, “because my agent sent it to me –and I was just, like, falling in love with it. It was amazing. (The creators) wrote such a killer pilot, I’m super-excited. It’s a lot of fun.”
Part of Totah’s enthusiasm stems from his own life experience being mirrored by Michael, who reveals it to his dad in the “Champions” premiere. “We’re one of the first television comedies portraying an LGBT character,” notes Totah, a celebrity ambassador for the organizations GLAAD and GLSEN. “I’m definitely very proud of that ... and scared. Hopefully, no one
comes for me for misportraying someone. I’m just going to do it my way.”
That can be considered a huge step for someone whose first television stops were at Disney Channel, in the shows “Jessie” and “Liv and Maddie.” Totah recalls that those happened soon after he “came out to L.A. I was, like, 9 – and I’m 16 now, so not having as many super-hard restrictions as an actor is so cool, because there’s a lot more improv that I can do and a lot more things we can say.”
Birthdate: Aug. 5, 2001
Birthplace: Sacramento, Calif.
Current residence: Los Angeles
Marital status: Single
Other television work includes: “Handsome: A Netflix Mystery Movie,” “Liv and Maddie,” “Tween Fest,” “Sofia the First” (voice only), “Skirtchasers,” “Jessie,” “Glee,” “Boys in Blue,” “2 Broke Girls,” “OMG!,” “New Girl,” “Back in the Game,” “The Exes,” “Nina Needs to Go,” “Kroll Show”
Movie work includes: “Magic Camp” (forthcoming), “Spider-Man: Homecoming,” “Time Toys,” “Other People” On one creative freedom he’s found in doing “Champions”: “I thought I couldn’t say ‘God.’ I was (supposed to say), ‘Oh, my God,’ but I stopped myself. I was like, ‘Oh, my.’ (Then the producers were) like, ‘No, you can say ”God.“ God is real on NBC.’ And I was like, ‘Oh, great!’

Do you think the best Cajun food is found in New Orleans? Does chain pizza make you sniff and turn up your nose in disapproval? Do you feel that a dish prepared in the tradition of the old country is the only way to go?
If so, David Chang has a message for you: Authenticity is overrated and you need to open your mind to new ideas and methods. And if you watch his new Netflix documentary series “Ugly Delicious,” you just might. You food snob, you.
“That’s 100 percent one of the tenets of the show ...,” the New York-based chef and restaurateur explains. “One of the things that continued to come up in our (production) conversations was authenticity and importation of ideas. And what makes something good? ... And can Japan have the best pizza in the world if Japan makes everything else great? And to really challenge your assumptions. So part of that was: Where can we go to places that can help facilitate that story?”
In each hourlong episode, Chang and a long list of special guests that includes entertainers, writers and fellow chefs, hit the road to check out things like Viet-Cajun cuisine in Houston, home cooking in Copenhagen and pizza in multiple locales. Along the way, he endeavors to use food as vehicle to

Charlie Hicks and Elaine Renko neither trust nor like each other, but each is painfully aware their fates are inexorably intertwined.

Jim Sturgess (“21,” “Feed the Beast”) and former supermodel Agyness Deyn (“Clash of the Titans,” “The White King”) star as polar-opposite police partners who must overcome their mutual distrust to fight crime in London as the end of the world approaches in this British drama series from “Luther” creator Neil Cross that opens its six-episode first season Wednesday.

As played by Jim Sturgess (“21,” “Feed The Beast”) and Agyness Deyn (“Clash of the Titans,” “The White King”) in the Hulu crime drama series “Hard Sun,” which begins streaming Wednesday, March 7, they’re oil-and-water detectives with the London police force who couldn’t be more polar opposite.
Charlie is a solid family man and a committed cop, but also is profoundly corrupt. After his beloved partner is killed in the line of duty, he is paired with Elaine, a difficult personality with a troubled
past who is also incorruptible. As each grudgingly accepts their new situation, they come into information during the investigation of an apparent suicide that changes everything – a coming cosmic disaster will end all life on Earth within the next five years.
“It’s interesting,” Sturgess says, “because the two characters right from the off have two very different perspectives on what is important when we discover this information on this flash drive.
“And for my character, it all boils down to family,” he continues. “It’s all about protection and looking after the people that you love and

Former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Joe Halpin is the creative force and showrunner of this 10-episode drama series that explores a world of gangs made up of those sworn to protect and defend and the secret societies that are nearly impossible to join but are highly protective of their own. Premiering Thursday, the series stars Ryan Kwanten (“True Blood”), Cory Hardrict (“American Sniper”) and Arlen Escarpeta (“The Magicians”).

that are closest to you, and making sure that their exit from this world is as lookedafter and is as well-prepared as possible. So that’s my character’s absolute through line throughout the show, is to look after the people that he loves no matter what the cost and is prepared to do some fairly questionable things at times to reach that through line.”
Indeed, family comes first for both officers, but one wouldn’t glean that from an early sequence in the premiere, where Elaine is stabbed during a knock-downdrag-out with her teenage son. Deyn, a former supermodel, proves herself quite adept at fight scenes, particularly one
later on with Charlie over custody of the flash drive.
“She comes at it from a very intellectual standpoint,” Deyn explains. “And I think that’s where Elaine and Hicks kind of come to blows. It’s kind of like, ‘We can’t be emotional about this. This is what we have to do,’ which is a very interesting thing to play when she has this new relationship of her son there. It was really fun to play the balance of her energy ... of righting her own wrongs and trying to do the moralistic good thing for the masses and having herself being second, to then have to put herself first for her son. So that was a nice twist that I really enjoyed playing.”

Carmelo Anthony’s list of accomplishments is a mile long, but one thing is missing and that is an NBA championship. Now with the Oklahoma City Thunder and Russell Westbrook, he may get a chance to advance deeper than ever in the NBA playoffs. The Thunder’s up-and-down season continues Saturday, March 10 on ABC when they host the San Antonio Spurs, a Western Conference rival.
Anthony’s arrival in OKC via a trade from the New York Knicks in September quickly raised the stock of the Thunder in terms of being a serious contender in the West; no easy task compared to the East. Eventually Anthony and Westbrook appeared to click and the Thunder offense began to put up some serious points. They enjoyed a six-game winning streak in December and followed that up with an eight-game stretch in January. But there have been some losing streaks as well.
Along the way Anthony has moved to 22nd on the NBA all-time scoring list and is one of only six players to score 24,000 points, grab 6,000 rebounds, have 2,500 assists, 1,000 steals and sink 1,000 3-point field goals. In his only college season he won a championship at Syracuse and has three Olympic gold medals along with a bronze as a member of Team USA in each of the past four Summer Olympic games.
In the next month Anthony and the Thunder will be setting themselves up for a playoff run in hopes of dethroning the Golden State Warriors in the West.

‘THE OATH’ FOLLOWS POLICE

AND COPS WHO GO BAD

At a time when police departments across the country are beset by accusations of racism, brutality and other crimes, a series about police gangs and their nefarious activities isn’t likely to help their image. Especially since it’s based on the experiences of its showrunner, an ex-cop.
Premiering Thursday, March 8, on Crackle, “The Oath” introduces us to the Ravens, a group of big-city California cops involved in everything from drug distribution and money laundering to robbery. That is illustrated in the series’ opening sequence, when a group of masked, machine-gun-toting thugs storm a bank and demand the key card to the safe. After getting away with the loot, the thieves are revealed to cops, who are eventually cornered, apprehended and brought in by the FBI.
It is there that the cops – Steve Hammond (Ryan Kwanten, “True Blood”), Karen Beach (Katrina Law, “Training Day”), Cole Hammond (Cory Hardrict, “LAbyrinth”) and Pete Ramos (J.J. Soria, “Animal Kingdom”) – meet no-nonsense Agent Aria Price (Elisabeth Rohm, “Law & Order”).
She tells them she knows about the Ravens and scores of other gangs in the department and she wants them to help her build a RICO case against them. So she offers them a deal: Let undercover agent Damon Byrd (Arlen Escarpeta, “The Magicians”) infiltrate their operation or go to prison.

Also starring Sean Bean (“Drone”), Michael Malarkey (“The Vampire Diaries”) and Linda Purl (“Happy Days”), the series is based on the experiences of creator, writer and showrunner Joe Halpin, a former Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputy and ex-police gang member.
“Corruption is a large part of why these subsets, these gangs exist within police departments throughout the United States,” Halpin explains. “A majority of it is it starts out banding together to protect yourselves. I mean, you’re out there making snap decisions every day, (are) thrust into violent situations and held accountable for those decisions. And at times you make bad choices and those choices can cause you to lose your job or go to jail. And so it’s kind of a micro-succession of covering for each other that leans into that ... world of corruption and causes people to have that us-against-them mentality and band together and form these gangs. And from there, it progresses to different things.
“That said, I was a police officer myself here in Los Angeles for 18 years, was part of a cop gang,” he continues. “But I think it would be wrong of us to paint all police officers with the same brush. Ninety-nine percent of cops go out there, they take the oath, they do what they have to do to defend the people and enforce the laws.”
