Explore life aboard a World War II submarine Saturday during the USS Batfish Living History Winter Cruise.
Then go to the War Memorial Park Museum to explore the rest of the story.
Living History Day runs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at War Memorial Park northeast of Muskogee.
Museum Executive Director Brent Trout said visitors can see some newly-switched displays in the Batfish Living History Room.
“Every winter, we go through a process of taking artifacts off display to give them a resting period and give us an opportunity to interpret a different aspect of World War II or the USS Batfish,” Trout said.
One new display focuses on Eddie Goldfarb, who served several patrols on the Batfish.
Once he gets off the Batfish in World War II, he becomes one of the most prolific toymakers in American history,” Trout said. “I think he has 150 patents for toys. If you remember the wind-up chattering teeth. That

Another updated display focuses on deck guns aboard the submarine, he said.
Trout said living history crews come to the USS Batfish twice each year.
Trout said the programs “bring a new level of excitement and education to the Muskogee War Memorial Park.”
“Firstly, the Batfish Living History Association is a dedicated group of

A nightclub singer finds convent life unconventional in the musical, “Sister Act.”
Muskogee High School students sing all about this weekend.
“Sister Act” runs 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 3 p.m. Sunday at the MHS performing arts center.
Director Penny McGill called “Sister Act” a fun show.
“It breaks up the Disney theme I’ve had for the last couple of years, but it’s still kind of light-hearted,” she said. “And its a story about sisterhood, which is timely right about now.”
She said “Sister Act” is a show about diversity and appreciating people’s differences.
“How we work together, even if we are different,” she said. “You have a showgirl who was placed in the midst of a convent. You think it’s not going to end well, but in this story it does.”
McGill said abundant female talent at MHS prompted her choice.
“I usually evaluate the talent level we have,” McGill said. “We have so many wonderfully talented young girls — we have guys, too, but mostly girls. So I was trying to find a show that would showcase those talents as a lead vehicle.”
MHS senior Madison Eckerson plays Deloris Van Cartier, the showgirlturned-nun.
She said she studied for her part by people watching.
“I did a lot of research of women who I though portrayed the character well,” Eckerson said. “Even students at the school, different people around town, just making observations to add

A unique “sisterhood” awaits nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier in the Muskogee High School production “Sister Act.” The musical is taken from a 1992 movie comedy.

She said she learned a lot by playing Deloris — or Sister Mary Clarence. I discovered that you will find friends in the craziest places,” Eckerson

said. “Just like here in the musical, I made some of my closest friends in the musical. If I had never joined the musical, I may have never met them.”
The play has all original music,

which McGill compared to “70s show tunes.”
Eckerson said the songs are energetic.
“I think the only musical challenge I have is singing back to back to back,” Eckerson said. “In a lot of scenes, I’m constantly on stage singing. That’s the only challenge, getting tired a little bit. But I’m pushing through it.”
The musical is based on the 1992 movie comedy starring Whoopi Goldberg.
The MHS production offers its take on the lead role.
“With the exception of shows that demand the casting be ethnic bound, I’ve always done color-blind casting,” McGill said. “And in my research of the piece, I found it wasn’t really written about a black woman. It’s about a show girl who gets put in a convent. We’re taking that view on it.”
Eckerson, an MHS senior, said she rose to that challenge.
“I feel like I have the talent to make the character my own, but still make the show enjoyable,” she said. “I’m excited to work with everyone, and the music’s fun and I think everyone will really enjoy it.”
Brady Gallaway portrays Deloris’ police officer body guard Eddie Souther.
“His character is pretty funny because when he gets nervous, he starts to sweat,” Gallaway said. “And he’s always been made fun of so much. They call him ‘Sweaty Eddie.’”
He said the main challenge he faces is “living up to the energy that the other characters have.”
“When the other actors out here are setting the bar pretty high, you just have to take it one step higher to make the show great,” he said.

volunteers who take it upon themselves to collaborate with the staff and other volunteers to accomplish various maintenance and preservation projects that are need to maintain a 75-year old submarine,” Trout said. “Secondly, the BLHA puts an extreme amount of effort into their program to show the public what exactly the men on board
the USS Batfish were experiencing. The BLHA trains each individual to become a Batfish expert and to know the secrets of World War II submarine life.
Trout said many living history programs bring surprises.
“Some of the living historians bring displays related to aspects of World War II,” he said. “We occasionally host other groups that represent other aspects of World War II life.”

Spring semester offers many opportunities to hear orchestral music
By Renee Fite Daily Press Correspondent
Spring semester recitals and performances by students and professors at Northeastern State University offer unique opportunities to hear flutes, percussion, trombone and ensembles.
Performing guest artists include David Amlung on trumpet, Brian Hsu on piano, and Shelley Martinson on flute.
“It’s nice to hear an expert in their field do something well,” said Ron Chioldi, professor of piano at NSU for 21 years.
Hsu was a child prodigy. His parents moved from Thailand to New York City so he could attend Juliard, according to Chioldi.
“I’ve heard him play before; it’s very exciting, kind of the real deal,” he said. “He tends to be very acrobatic, like an Olympic skater, very athletic and visually interesting and sounds interest-
ing, like doing a triple axel and landing or not. Hsu is a very nice guy.”
In sports, kids start early on and, like athletes, musicians need to train muscle memory early.
The Friday, March 2, piano concert is part of the 10th annual Piano Festival.
Saturday is piano competition for regional high schools, including some from Missouri, Arkansas and Oklahoma. The event is free and open to the public. Hsu will also work with the students on Saturday.
“Some music is very intimate and touches the heart. Some is very energetic, and I like music that combines both and is soulful and with athletic virtuosity to it,” said Chilodi. “Come hear Brian in concert. He’s incredible.”

mance will be the Wind Ensemble Concert, Friday March 9, according to Dr. James Adams, director of bands at NSU.
Adams said it’s the 100th anniversary of Leonard Bernstein, and the group will be performing that powerful music. Music will be familiar to the audience members, including a suite of music from the classic movie “West Side Story.”
“It’s very difficult music. I want to give a shout-out to NSU students. We have some fantastic student musicians, students who are talented and work hard. It’s what I love about my job,” said Adams. “I want everyone to feel they can bring the whole family and come enjoy this.”
The concerts are free for all.
“I love creating powerful music for the students and the community. Music has shaped my life, and I like to pass that on to others. I love what I do,” said Adams, who plays trombone, French horn and piano.
In his second year at NSU, Adams said he likes all the instruments in the band.
“All the instruments in the band are needed to create the sound they have, so there’s not an instrument I don’t like,” he said.
Sophomore bassoonist Bailey Wyckoff also likes the different sounds she hears from her seat on end of the third row.
“I can hear everyone. In this profession, as a future music educator, it’s unique to see what I’ll be doing in the years to come,” said Wyckoff, who plans to graduate with a bachelor’s in music education and go for her master’s to be a band director. “I enjoy working with middle and high school kids.”
At her high school in Coweta, she assisted the band director, sometimes rehearsing seventh- and eighth-grade students, and she really enjoyed it.
For Wychoff, being a part of NSU’s music department has been a roller coaster ride that only goes up.
“I’ve pretty much been able to expand my mind and learn about the

different ways to teach, and ways to teach different people. I had to teach a new person to learn to play an instrument. It’s different than teaching someone who knows his instrument inside and out,” she said. “The Wind Ensemble is a huge family that loves music and loves to inspire others.”
She encourages the community to come to the Bernstein Wind Ensemble concert. Her favorite of the show is “Overture to Candide.”
“A lot of his music really sounds similar, but we show the similarities and differences of his pieces he’s written,” she said. “‘West Side’ is more upbeat, and ‘Candide,’ the full piece, takes you on a story,” Wyckoff said.
Faculty members also perform and Adams’ faculty trombone recital is Monday, March 12.
“The NSU Music Department is a great asset to this community. We love performing and want everyone to come hear us,” he said.

I t’s being sold largely as a lighthearted show, but “Good Girls” gets into rough territory, too.
Premiering Monday, Feb. 26, the NBC series – from “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Scandal” writing-producing veteran Jenna Bans –teams Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Retta (“Parks and Recreation”) and Mae Whitman (“Parenthood”) as suburban acquaintances who try to better their lives by staging a grocery-store robbery. Their idea soon appears increasingly bad, as fallout from the heist prompts them to commit even worse crimes.
“Because of the tone of the show, it definitely leans into the fun and the comedy
and the chemistry between these three women,” Bans insists. “There really hasn’t been anything that was deemed too ‘not network’ for us to do. I think we sort of pushed the envelope and, at the same time, really fit into our little unique tone and little unique space we sort of carved out for ourselves. We’re kind of our own unique animal.”
Co-star Whitman cites “one thing I really loved about the show right away. It brings up the question of morals and justification, and what is good and what’s evil ... and what would you do, how far would you go to protect your family, and what are the intentions behind these characters’ motives in doing what
they do. I look forward to reading every single script, because there’s something in there that brings up a real question that’s really a debatable situation.”
While Matthew Lillard and Zach Gilford are among male cast members, “Good Girls” logically stays focused on the women. Hendricks deems its premise “incredibly genuine, and it feels so natural when you read a script, when you say the lines and they just come out and flow out of your mouth. It feels like real people. The words are real. The emotions are real. The tone is tricky. We do go from very, very serious stuff into funny things, and we just try to make sure

that we honor what Jenna’s written and that we play every moment as real.”
“Good Girls” has special significance to the typically humorous Retta, who reflects, “I’ve obviously gotten great gigs in the last couple of years, but generally, it was (playing) a receptionist or a meter maid or the nurse. I was always aiding or helping someone else – or at least that’s what I was offered. And then, when Jenna asked me to do this, I was like, ‘Holy s... ! I get to be a person.’ It was the first time I felt I got to play a person with love in her life ... who, outside of dealing with the problems of her sick child, is happy. And that’s nice.”

One could say Patton Oswalt’s latest of many television roles is a matter of principal.
Getting a dual premiere after its early-February “preview” – on Sunday, Feb. 25, after the Winter Olympics closing ceremony, and then in its regular slot the following Thursday – the NBC sitcom “A.P. Bio” casts comedian and actor Oswalt as the chief administrator of a Toledo, Ohio, high school that has a new teacher: one of its former students (Glenn Howerton, “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”), who mourns losing his Harvard University position and challenges the principal while overseeing an Advanced Placement biology class.
Seth Meyers and “Saturday Night Live” mentor Lorne Michaels are among the mentors of “A.P. Bio,” which Oswalt says he enjoys for being able to play “a lot of subtle stuff about wanting to be the cool guy. The minute you’re in authority, no matter how cool you are, you are no longer the cool guy ... you are the authoritative figure. There’s a lot of really great human riffs in there about trying to maintain a level of coolness while telling people what and what not to do.”
As he also continues to do stand-up comedy engagements and other work, Oswalt appreciates that the makers of “A.P. Bio” are “very fast and loose with the other commitments that I have, but this is a really, really fun show to get to shoot. This isn’t something that I’m trying to get around.
“When I get each new script, it’s like, ‘How are they going to shoot this scene?’ Also, I want to come in to see how are they going to pull this off and cut this together. It’s a fun job that I’m really, really lucky to have. Right now, especially the way TV is, there’s so many different platforms (to watch something on). It’s a win-win for me.”

‘Mr. Nasty’ as Fox’s ‘MasterChef Junior’
Season 6 of Fox’s “MasterChef Junior” brings back Gordon Ramsay and Christina Tosi as judges for more culinary adventures with the younger set, joined by a fan favorite who’s been missing from the panel for the past two seasons: restaurateur, author and TV personality Joe Bastianich.
“Mr. Nasty is back,” Ramsay says with a laugh. “Joe is an amazing mentor ... . It’s a welcome return, let me tell you. And also, we butt heads. So I’m the cook, he’s the waiter, he carries my food and we butt heads, which I think is healthy.”
As the new season opens Friday, March 2, Ramsay, Tosi and Bastianich continue to watch, listen, advise and console as kids ages 8 to 13 showcase their culinary talents and passion for food through a series of challenges, this time in a boys versus girls format, with the winner receiving the MasterChef Junior trophy and a $100,000 grand prize.
Over the five-plus seasons of “MasterChef Junior,” Ramsay has noticed that the boys and girls on the show share some traits with their older counterparts, such the tendency among the males to aggressively plow ahead into challenges and the girls’ penchant for standing back and considering their next move. He gives both genders of the younger set high grades for creativity and thinking outside the box, more so in fact than their older counterparts.
“Not only thinking out of the box,” he says, “but they see that combination where a young sort of 25-year-old amateur cook would never put handdiced olives with a rack of lamb. They’d never mix a Santa Barbara spot prawn with a belly of pork. It’s almost like an insult.

“The Looming Tower,” www.hulu.com/the-loomingtower
Based on the book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, this 10-episode drama series examines how a rivalry between the counter-terrorism units of the FBI and CIA may have inadvertently set the stage for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Dropping Wednesday, the series stars Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”), Peter Sarsgaard (“The Killing”), Tahar Rahim (“The Last Panthers”) and Wrenn Schmidt (“Outcast”).

“American Idol” is about to return, but its first winner is pledging her allegiance to a different singing competition now.
A guest adviser on “The Voice” last fall, Kelly Clarkson joins that Emmy-winning NBC series full-time as a coach and judge as its 14th season starts Monday, Feb. 26. She and returnees Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton determine which hopefuls earn spots on their respective teams, then stay with the potential to be named the next “Voice.” Carson Daly continues as host and an executive producer, as the show again airs Mondays and Tuesdays weekly.
“It’s definitely awesome,” lively three-time Grammy winner Clarkson says of being the newest recruit for the “Voice” panel. “The (other) coaches on my season have all won a season, so it’s cool to be able to tell them that I’ve navigated a competition. I think I bring that kind of knowledge to the table, but I still feel like the same kid that (just) entered this industry. I still have the same sense of awe about it, and the same excitement.”
Indeed, Clarkson notes she “can’t hide excitement, so I think that’s the same way I am with these singers. I get to be a part of a team and not just judge; I get to actually be involved with them and cultivate their career and where they want to go and

help them navigate this competition. I think that’s my favorite part.”
With “American Idol’s” ABC premiere a couple of weeks away, Clarkson reasons the Mark Burnett-produced “The Voice” is “so different” from the contest that brought her stardom, “and I can say that because I have been on different shows. When I started singing, I started singing opera music. And at all the competitions, we had to perform behind screens, so there was no favoritism. There was no aesthetic appeal involved. There was nothing except for your talent and merit that your performance was based on.
“We’ve wanted to work together forever, ‘The Voice’ and I,” maintains Clarkson. “Before it was even aired, my manager – who also manages Blake Shelton – was talking to me about this show, and I said, ‘That is completely brilliant.’ At the core, people do love talent over just aesthetics, all the time.”
Clarkson frequently sees the results firsthand: “(Viewers) feel almost like a dream of theirs is coming true, too. It sounds cheesy, but it is that cool moment when I’m in Target and some woman comes up to me and is like, ‘I’ve been singing my whole career, and I watched you, and we’re so similar. I felt like I won that night.’ It’s a really cool thing to be a part of.”

Few athletes in any sport have begun their careers the way Toronto Maple Leafs center Auston Matthews did last season in the NHL. Matthews and the Maple Leafs will meet the Washington Capitals Saturday, March 3 on NBC in this season’s stadium series matchup. They’ll play outside at the Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium in Annapolis, Maryland.
Matthews made headlines to start the 2016-17 season, when at just the age of 20 he scored four goals in his NHL debut. A solid rookie season followed with Matthews finishing third in the NHL in goals scored (40), leading the Leafs to a wild card berth in the Eastern Conference during the Stanley Cup playoffs; losing in the first round of the playoffs in six games by the Capitals. Had it not been for the sensational rookie season put together by Connor McDavid of the Edmonton Oilers, Matthews would likely have been the NHL’s rookie of the year. If the NHL had sent its players to the Winter Olympics in PyeongChang a few weeks ago, it’s likely Matthews would’ve been on the U.S. team. He helped the U.S.
win gold medals at the World U-17 (under 17) Hockey Challenge in 2014, as well as the IIHF World U18 Championships in 2014, and a bronze in the IIHF World U20 Championships in 2016.
Thus far this season Matthews is not the scoring machine he was last season, being just out of the top-ten in goals scored. Toronto, however is steadily improving, and remain on pace for a higher playoff seed come April.

Movie: Notes From the Field Actress and storyteller Anna Deavere Smith brings her critically acclaimed Off-Broadway onewoman show about America’s failed justice system to a much wider audience in this new TV adaptation, which finds Smith portraying an entire gallery of diverse characters. Among them: deli worker Kevin Moore, who caught the Freddie Gray beating on video, and Bree Newsome, the activist who climbed a South Carolina flagpole to remove a Confederate flag from statehouse grounds. Jazz bassist Marcus Shelby provides musical accompaniment.

The Walking Dead Is Carl (Chandler Riggs) really dead, or at least dying? That question is likely to be foremost in the minds of this show’s fans as season 8 resumes with the show’s winter premiere, “Honor.” In the midseason finale, they saw Rick’s (Andrew Lincoln) son bitten by one of the walkers, which generally signals imminent death. And it’s not as if Rick doesn’t have enough on his plate already: His attack on Negan (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) was a bust that left devastation in its aftermath.
MONDAY
9 p.m. on KJRH Good Girls
If you know the 1980 movie “How to Beat the High Cost of Living,” this premiere of a seriocomic show from longtime Shonda Rhimes producing ally Jenna Bans might sound familiar, but there’s definitely drama along with the humor. The “Pilot” teams Christina Hendricks (“Mad Men”), Retta (“Parks and Recreation”) and Mae Whitman (“Parenthood”) as financially struggling moms who become unlikely criminals ... with their amateur robbery effort leaving a
long trail, especially when they literally get away with more than they expected.
TUESDAY
9:30 p.m. on TBS
The Detour
Nate (Jason Jones) fully expects a hero’s welcome when he returns home after an exhausting and challenging winter at sea, only to find himself unceremoniously left stranded at the dock by his family in the new episode “The Vows.” After he succeeds in getting a lift back to what passes for his life in town, he’s even more shocked to discover how quickly things changed in his absence, and how well his loved ones seemed to have adapted to his being away.

‘THE LOOMING TOWER’ CONSIDERS HOW A CIA/FBI RIVALRY MAY HAVE LED TO 9/11

“The Looming Tower”
At a time of fighting among government agencies, a TV series about how such a scenario may have inadvertently set the stage for tragedy seems particularly relevant.
Based on the book of the same name by Lawrence Wright, “The Looming Tower,” a 10-episode limited series that begins streaming Wednesday, Feb. 28, on Hulu, tells the story of how a rivalry over classified information between the counter-terrorism units of the FBI and CIA may have instead set the path for the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.
Set in the late 1990s during the rise of Osama bin Laden, the series stars Jeff Daniels (“The Newsroom”) as John O’Neill, the headstrong chief of the FBI’s I-49 Squad, who is convinced that the U.S. has been targeted for attack by al-Qaida. He and his protégé Ali Soufan (Tahar Rahim, “The Last Panthers”) face an uphill battle getting intelligence from other agencies, chief among them the CIA’s Alec Station, which is led by the antagonistic Martin Schmidt (Peter Sarsgaard, “The Killing”). He and his protégé Diane Marsh (Wrenn Schmidt, “Outcast”) decide to defy a presidential order and hoard the information under the mistaken belief that the CIA is the only agency equipped to handle potential threats from overseas.
As the two agencies work against each other toward the same goal – keeping the country safe – al-Qaida is busy planning the largest attack on U.S. soil since the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941.

BY GEORGE DICKIE @ZAP2IT.COM
“It’s a battle. It’s a battle to get heard,” says Daniels of his character and his situation. “And the way he delivered his message wasn’t always necessarily compatible with people listening to him. He was belligerent. He blasted people. When he didn’t get his way, he screamed and yelled. But in the end he was right. So there were all kinds of obstacles, not only professionally, but personally ... . As his partner told me, he gulped life. Everything was intense. Everything he did had an intensity to it. And that was interesting to play because I’d never played it. And ... I had no clue as to how to play it, which is – if you risk failure, then I get interested.”
In the opening episode, O’Neill compares Alec Station to the Manson family because of its male chief and female soldiers. When he learns that Schmidt’s group is withholding information from his, he reacts with a “f... him” regarding any further cooperation – and he’s told that those were Schmidt’s exact sentiments toward him.
“When you’re ... playing someone who’s the obstacle in a lot ways,” Sarsgaard says, “you think of the real positive reasons that you’re not sharing. And you certainly don’t go comparing yourself to Charles Manson. I mean, it is interesting that I work with all women. I definitely take that in and mull that over as to why that may be, and that informs the person I’m playing. But no, for once, I’m not playing a serial killer.”
