Musician Billy Arnett will share a stage tonight with a man he calls his hero.
The Billy Arnett Band will play at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.
A painting of Okie From Muskogee original Merle Haggard dominates the back of the OMHOF stage, where Arnett will perform his Red Dirt music.
“I can turn right around and see him,” Arnett said.
He said the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame is one of his favorite places to play.
“It’s nostalgic, and all the history there,” Arnett said. “I’ve got friends that are in the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame. Some of which have passed on.”
Two of those friends are Merle Haggard and Eddie Burris, who co-wrote “Okie From Muskogee.”
“Eddie Burris, I actually toured around a little bit with him for about four years and played a lot of music music with him,” Arnett said. “I got to meet Merle through him and met a lot of their friends from Bakersfield (California). Just a bunch of good guys and friends.”
Arnett said hanging out with Haggard was an amazing experience.
“He’s always been one of my heroes,” he said. “First time I met him, I didn’t know what to say. He asked me if the cat had my tongue. And I said ‘I guess so.’ And told me, “Hey, I put my pants on one

leg at a time, just like you do.’”
He recalled reading how Haggard was equally tongue-tied meeting Lefty Frizzell.
Arnett said he plans to play some new original music that’s on his extended play recording.
“And of course, a lot of Red Dirt favorites,” he said. “I tried writing different kinds of music, even a few rock ‘n’ roll songs. It always ended up sounding just like me.”
He said he’s bringing his “full band show” to OMHOF.
“We do a lot of two-man acoustic song swaps here and there, so it’s always fun to bring a full band and just turn it loose.”
Arnett said some band members are like his brothers, because they’ve performed so long together.
“They’re fun to work with on stage and in the studio,” he said. “We’re all like-minded. No divas, no arguments. We just like to hang around and play music.”

Fiddler Bob Fjeldsted couldn’t predict how many will show up at the Oklahoma State Winter Fiddlers Convention this weekend at Sequoyah State Lodge.
“However many it will hold,” Fjeldsted said. “It’s huge. Hundreds from probably a six- or seven-state area and a couple of foreign countries.”
The convention runs Thursday through Saturday at the lodge at Sequoyah State Park.
Fjeldsted said fiddlers bring different styles, especially when they start jamming in hallways, stairways and other spare spaces, he said.
“You’ll have an area doing gospel, an area playing jazz, a little bluegrass singing going on,” he said.
Fiddlers will play at a gospel show 9:30 a.m. Saturday.
Dances will run from 3 to 10 p.m., Fjeldsted said. Dance bands include the Swing Shift, Larry Lang and the Lone Star Troubadours, Swinging Ambassadors, Saggy Bottom Boys and Green Country Playboys.
Fjeldsted said Swing Shift performed at a previous fiddlers gathering.
“And they had jaws on the floor,” Fjeldsted said. “They killed it, so I made sure I invited them back. They will tear it up. I think they are the hottest band there.”
Swing Shift fiddler and singer Bo Posey said the group indeed was “the different band” at the last event.
“We were the new kids on the

block,” Posey said. “We didn’t play all Bob Wills songs. We played a bunch of Ray Price and just some upbeat stuff. Some Johnny Bush stuff, a couple of Charlie Daniels. We did some fiddle-invested songs. We didn’t play anything that didn’t have a fiddle in it.”
He said he had been trying to get his band to Sequoyah State Lodge for some time.
“We’re all still pretty spread out,” Posey said.
Bass player Vern Pierce, came from around McAlester, he said.
“His dad was a traveling preacher, and he played the bass with him,” Posey said. “He wound up playing bass in Las Vegas for several years. He’s awesome.”

Guitar player Mike Gilliam grew up around Kiowa.
Posey said he and drummer Doyle Burden grew up around Weleetka.
“We grew up together, been playing in bands off and on for years,” Posey said.
Posey said steel guitar player Max Crosby has “been playing longer than most of us have been alive.”
Posey, who plays fiddle and sings, said he’s played with a variety of bands before setting up Swing Shift.
“We finally met the right people, put the band together and we’re having the time of our lives,” he said.
Larry Lang and the Lone Star Troubadours play in Texas. So, of course, they have a fiddle in the band.
Lang said the Wichita Falls band has been

together since 2000 and plays western swing and Texas Honky Tonk.
“If you can’t dance to it, we don’t play it,” Lang said. “We do play concerts. We played out in Woodward, Oklahoma, for the Cattle Barons Ball. But we’re primarily a dance band. We want interaction. If people aren’t dancing, we scratch our heads wondering what we did wrong.”

ens, Mitch Vance on bass and Jeremy Hayes on drums.
“He’s a great drummer, great friend,” Arnett said. “I believe Nathan Elkins will join me. He’ll probably sing with me, play some guitar and do harmony vocals.”
Arnett said he always likes to bring other artists with him.
“I like to sprinkle in some music friends here and there,” he said.
He said he’s had a busy schedule, even though he books few shows himself.
“I have friends that will book shows and ask me to song-swap with them,” he said. “That keeps me busy, right there. I haven’t been calling and booking shows, because something comes up every weekend.”
For example, he recently played at Grove’s Cherokee Casino, subbing for a lead singer who couldn’t make it.
“We had one practice and played three hours,” he said. “Less than a week to get ready, one practice about two hours, then we played three hours of music. I always enjoy playing with my friends.”

World renowned opera singor tenor to be featured at event

Music makes a happy heart, or so it says in the Bible – and fans of the Northeastern State University Choral Music Department would agree.
The next few months of the spring semester, seniors will prepare to graduate, and the NSU department will host recitals and other events, including a Vocal Day Festival featuring Gregory Turay on Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts.
“Our festival will feature world-renowned opera singer tenor Gregory Turay,” said Dr. Jeffery Wall, chair of the department and director of Choral Activities at NSU. “He’ll also be teaching a master class on Monday following the concert, at 10 a.m., with our students and invited local students from our community high schools, as well.”
American tenor Turay was hailed early in his career by the London Times as “one of the brightest natural talents to have emerged from the U.S. in recent years.” His website also says Turay is the recipient of several of classical music’s most coveted honors, including the Richard Tucker Award, George London Foundation Award, ARIA award, and Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions.
Another opportunity to be impressed with NSU’s talented performers is Thursday, Feb. 15, for a Coming Home concert by the University Singers.
“It’s a post-tour performance. The University Singers returned last week from a six-day tour down to Dallas,”

World-renowned opera singer tenor Gregory Turay will perform Sunday, Feb. 18, at 3 p.m. in the NSU Center for Performing Arts.
said Wall.
The students performed at many high schools and had one particular amazing opportunity.
“They performed as Prelude Choirs with the North Texas Children’s Choir. We performed first and then together at the Meyerson Performance Center; it’s the Carnegie of Dallas,” Wall said. “It was a great event. It was a really receptive audience and increased the profile of NSU.”

Senior Annie Lindsay is assistant secretary in the Choral Music Department, with a double major in music business and accounting. She’s planning to attend graduate school in accounting.
“I’ve been playing piano for 15 years, but I realized it’s more of a hobby than a career for me,” said Lindsay, who said the department works very hard. “We’re a closeknit group, which is not always what you find in all departments. Everybody knows everybody and supports each other.”
Professors are very
active in future successes to reach goals for students, whether it’s to further education as a career or with internships, according to Lindsay.
A performances calendar is available online at nsumusic.com.
“Most of our events are free. Some concerts with visiting entertainers may have general admission fees and donations can be made by visitors to concerts to help keep our programs up and going,” she said.
When the communities attends concerts and productions, they support the music department at NSU and see how hard the students work.
“Even though we’re small we’re really good,” Lindsay said.

F or many an Olympic athlete, a silver medal is a dream realized, the culmination of a life of hard work and training and the crown jewel of a trophy case. For U.S. bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor, it conjures thoughts of what she feels was her disappointing performance at the 2014 Winter Games in Sochi, Russia.
“It was great to walk away with the silver,” the 33-yearold product of Douglaston, Ga., says, “but I wasn’t satisfied with the way I performed. I wasn’t satisfied with my driving and so my biggest focus this Olympics is to really put together four great runs where I’m driving well. I want to walk away win, lose or draw with a good performance, and
I don’t feel like I had that at Sochi, like I was a little bit inconsistent and that’s what caused me to not win the gold medal. But at the same time, you’re superexcited to still be able to make mistakes and win the medal at any stage.”
This week, Meyers Taylor and her push athlete Lauren Gibbs will take to the course at the Olympic Sliding Centre in PyeongChang, South Korea, in the second full week of competition at the 2018 Winter Olympics, which air on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app. Coming into these games, Meyers Taylor had registered but one win during the 2017-18

BY JAY BOBBIN
World Cup season, but that has left her far from discouraged. Her runs, she says, have been consistent and mistakes have been kept to a minimum. She also points out that she’s been experimenting with different partners and sled configurations.
“Some of them have worked, some of them have not worked at all,” she says with a laugh. “But that’s what you’ve got to do Olympic year.”
She knows her path to gold will not be easy. She sees stiff competition coming from Stephanie Schneider of Germany, who she says is “really hot” right now but is light on experience, and Canada’s two-time defending Olympic champion Kaillie Humphries.

U.S. bobsledder Elana Meyers Taylor competes at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea, on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.
“She knows how to get her four runs,” Meyers Taylor says. “She’s one of the most successful women in our sport so she’s always going to be the No. 1 competitor.”
“Four runs” is Meyers Taylor’s mantra. Get in four good runs, be consistent and avoid mistakes. The rest should take care of itself.
“It’s been kind of a crazy year but I think it’s all been working together to prepare me for whatever is going to happen at the Games,” she says. “That’s the biggest thing about the Olympics, is you never know what’s going to happen, so you have to be prepared for all kinds of possibilities. ... It’s all working to prepare you, that’s for sure.”

“The Resident” isn’t the first time Melina Kanakaredes has played a doctor, but she appreciates coming at the profession from a different direction now.
Before her “CSI: NY” stint, the daytime-drama veteran portrayed a small-town medic on “Providence.” She agrees that was a relatively genteel depiction, but her co-starring role as Dr. Lane Hunter on Fox’s current Monday medical drama is meant to examine what’s wrong with – and what might be done about – a system that sometimes seems more concerned with economics than with the best possible care of patients.
“This is so different from ‘Providence,’ ” the friendly Kanakaredes concurs. “We had an unapologetically sweet show where story lines were just properly, beautifully wrapped up. (The thing about) this series that really attracted me is that I see this show as helping us in our future.
“We are all going to deal with situations with loved ones, and with ourselves, and being your own self-advocate in a hospital situation is so important. I’ve learned so much being a part of this show. I did a lot of research. I’ve been in hospitals. I’ve followed surgeons. I’ve done all of that stuff for roles in the past, but they kind of don’t show every aspect.”

Kanakaredes reflects, “I had a wise friend tell me once that you call your doctor by his first name, the name his mother gave him. In my culture, doctors are gods, and it’s nice to remind yourself that they are human beings ... really great human beings who are brilliantly talented, and human beings who sometimes make
mistakes. And what I love about this show is that we are getting a picture of every aspect, and the humor and the joy and the relationships. It’s a wonderful balance between the personal aspects of these characters and their professional lives.”

On having filmed most of “The Resident’s” first season before it premiered: “The last time this happened to me was when we were a midseason replacement with ‘Providence,’ and it’s such a gift. You don’t have that anxiety of, ‘Oh, we went up a (ratings) point.’ It’s all about the project. It’s kind of like shooting a mini-film that lasts for ten episodes.”

In the span of about seven years, Hannah Hart has built herself into something of a cottage industry.
She’s created the popular foodie series “My Drunk Kitchen” and her channel MyHarto on YouTube, written two books, produced a movie and several TV shows, racked up about a dozen acting credits and launched her Food Network series “I Hart Food,” in which she explores the signature foods and flavors of various U.S. cities.
But ask her what stands out from Season 1 of that show and she’ll tell you every moment does –with one perhaps ranking higher than others.
“A memorable moment includes running into George R.R. Martin, the author of ‘Game of Thrones,’ inside a Tecolote (Café), which was crazy,” she says. “We were shooting breakfast and then George R.R. Martin’s in there and he was kind enough to jump in the show with us because he wanted to talk about how much he loves Santa Fe. So that was just wild.”
In that episode, which airs as an encore telecast Wednesday, Feb. 21, on Cooking Channel, she takes viewers to the New Mexico capital to check out its culinary scene, which is dominated by the chili pepper. Red or green, it seems everyone there has a strong opinion on these spicy hot delicacies, a topic Hart dove into with enthusiasm.
“I’m all about the Scoville scale. I’m a pepper person. ... I’ve been known to dabble,” she says. “There is a huge debate in Santa Fe about red versus green. Some people prefer red sauce, some prefer green sauce, some people love the chili pepper in all of its forms. ... . And the chef we had that day was just so knowledgeable and so passionate about the cuisine that he was just a sheer delight to talk to.”

“We had pesto pasta with really good veggie sausage that my partner’s really into. And we’re not vegetarians or anything, but I do like to try out all the different styles of meat and nonmeat, just because I’m curious about foods in general.”
What is your next project?

I feel really great about everything I’ve made so far and I just want to do more and better.”

If you didn’t know the AARP’s magazine staged its own yearly film honors, PBS and Alan Cumming are about to educate you.
The “Cabaret” Tony Award-winner and veteran of television’s “The Good Wife” serves as host of the first-ever broadcast of the American Association of Retired Persons’ Movies for Grownups Awards, as “Great Performances” presents the 17th annual edition of the event Friday, Feb. 23 (check local listings). “Battle of the Sexes,” in which Cumming plays a fashion-designer friend of tennis great Billie Jean King, is Movies for Grownups-nominated twice. “I really like that film,” he reflects. “In a way, it was usurped by our accumulation of all the stuff about things like Harvey (Weinstein) and the MeToo movement. The movie talked about the women’s movement and prejudice in the 1970s, then we saw this massive explosion of it in the 2010s.”

About to be a series regular again in the CBS mystery “Instinct,” premiering March 18, Scottish native Cumming has seen many of the Movies for Grownups nominees: “I vote in the Academy Awards, so over Christmas, I tried to binge on all the films that would be likely candidates.” He’s also happy to be making some AARP connections for personal reasons.
“One of my ambitions about doing this is that I’ve got to get my AARP card,” Cumming muses. “My husband got his when he turned 50, but I’ve just turned 53, and nothing’s come in the mail. I want to get with the program.”

Just in time for the Daytona 500, which airs Sunday, February 18 on Fox, Danica Patrick found herself a new and final ride for what will likely be her last NASCAR race. After six seasons with Stewart-Haas Racing on what is now NASCAR’s Monster Energy Cup Series, she cut a deal with Premium Motorsports and GoDaddy and has a car for Daytona.
In what is generally viewed as a man’s sport, Patrick has accomplished many firsts for women on the race track, both in stock car and Indy-car racing. She has the highest finish ever by a woman at the Indianapolis 500 – which she also plans to race this year – with a third place finish in 2009. She actually finished in the top ten, six out of seven times, at Indianapolis.
Entering the NASCAR scene in 2010, she became an immediate fan favorite. Although overall success has been difficult, she did make headlines in 2013 at Daytona when she won the pole and finished eighth overall. 2017 was a tough season for Patrick. After Stewart-Haas switched to Ford for the season, she had only one top-ten finish and finished 28th overall. She then said she would retire from racing full time.
Daytona may or may not be the last time we see Patrick in a stock car. But when she is out there, she’ll have a familiar voice in her ear: that of Tony Eury Jr., who was her crew chief earlier in her NASCAR career. Wouldn’t it be something to see her in Victory Lane?

A white cop critically injures a black teen in a traffic accident, resulting in a police cover-up and racial tensions in a Northeast city in a gripping drama series premiering this week on Netflix.
In “Seven Seconds,” an anthological crime drama from creator/ executive producer Veena Sud (“The Killing”) that begins streaming Friday, Feb. 23, we are introduced to Pete Jablonski (Beau Knapp, “Sand Castle”), a plainclothes detective in Jersey City, N.J., who is on the phone when he accidentally runs down 15-yearold Brenton Butler while driving through snowy Liberty State Park.
Detective Mike Diangelo (David Lyons, “Safe Haven”) decides to protect his cohort and brings in a homeless drunk with a history of DUI arrests to be charged with the crime. He is all-too-aware that the optics of a white cop injuring a black youth in this gritty burg are bad, accident or not, and will only serve to get the officer and the department crucified. Meanwhile, Isaiah and Latrice Butler (Russell Hornsby, “Grimm,” and Regina King, “American Crime”) hold vigil over their comatose son.
But assistant prosecutor K.J. Parker (Clare-Hope Ashitey, “Doctor Foster”), a troubled young black woman with a serious drinking problem, isn’t buying Diangelo’s

hard-sell and she launches a probe of her own with the help of investigator Joe “Fish” Rinaldi (Michael Mosley, “Ozark”). As she wrestles with her own demons, she grapples with the weight of the case and what it means to bring justice not only for the Butlers, but also for the black community.
“When we meet her at the beginning of the season she is pretty low,” Ashitey says of K.J. “She’s doing badly personally, she’s doing badly professionally and she’s kind of given up and she settled into this rut in her life and seems to have accepted that that is where she’s going to exist. But she ends up with this case, a case she thinks will be straightforward and easy to tie up and it actually becomes incredibly complicated and there are things that don’t make sense. And as we go through the season, she grows and she grows up and I think rediscovers her internal moral compass.”
Ashitey, an English actress, says she was attracted to the series by its smart writing, its well-drawn characters and subject matter that is in the news seemingly on a weekly basis.
“I think it’s something that anyone can feel passionate about,” she says. “I think it’s important and it’s an important conversation to be having.”
