On the hunt: Justin Hartley is the ‘Tracker’
‘Goodfellas’ retains its power and impact classic corner

Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco star in “Goodfellas”

Widely considered director Martin Scorsese’s masterpiece, the first-rate, fact-inspired 1990 crime drama “Goodfellas” — which AMC shows Sunday, Feb. 11 — casts Ray Liotta as Henry Hill, a Mob novice who is mentored by veterans portrayed by Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci and Paul Sorvino. In a picture packed with memorable performances, even by players who have only a couple of lines, Pesci won an Oscar as an underworld lieutenant with a hair-trigger temper. Lorraine Bracco (who stayed in a gangster milieu later in TV’s “The Sopranos”) is also fabulous as Hill’s wife, who slowly unravels in the face of his life of illegality. Always worth noting in a viewing of this film (which is dubbed substantially for basic-cable showings, given its frequently profane language) is the superbly chosen soundtrack, sort of a hits parade spanning the 1950s through the 1970s; in fact, veteran singer Jerry Vale turns up as himself in a nightspot sequence.

Steadily and surely, the stars of “This Is Us” have been moving on to other projects.

Milo Ventimiglia was first with the ABC series “The Company You Keep,” while his former television “wife,” Mandy Moore, made her series comeback recently with the second season of Peacock’s “Dr. Death.” Sterling K. Brown appears in the current movie “American Fiction,” and his ex-spouse from “This Is Us” — Susan Kelechi Watson — has been working on a Netflix series titled “The Residence,” which also involved Andre Braugher before his recent death. Chrissy Metz, meanwhile, starred in the holiday horror movie “A Creature Was Stirring” (2023) and has been advancing her singing career.

Now, it’s Justin Hartley’s turn. Formerly the commitment-phobic and trouble-prone Kevin Pearson in “This Is Us,” he plays someone much more in command in “Tracker,” a drama series that gets a post-Super Bowl premiere slot, Sunday, Feb. 11, on CBS and Paramount+. The series will stay on Sundays thereafter, with Hartley (also an executive producer of the show) playing Colter Shaw, a survivalist who crosses the country, using his specialized skills to help people — both police and private citizens — with searches and collects rewards for the missions when they’re completed. His complicated family history has given him demons he tries to exorcise in the course of doing his work.

Also featuring Abby McEnany (“Work in Progress”) and Robin Weigert (“Deadwood”) as the managers of Colter’s business affairs, “Tracker” is one of the first new series to debut after last year’s strikes by writers and actors. The friendly Hartley admits he was “a little nervous” as those protests continued, but he marvels that “we were somehow able to save our premiere date and get back into production in enough time to let us keep going like it never happened … which is pretty amazing. We’d worked so hard on this, there was some stress, but it’s wonderful to report for work as normal — just a reminder of what a great business we have.”

“Tracker” is based on the bestselling novel “The Never Game” (which was also the series’ original title) by “The Bone Collector” author Jeffery Deaver, and that name adapts Shaw’s credo that he uses to advise people he assists: “Never let panic take the wheel.” Indeed, the first episode starts with him assisting a fearful hiker who has been seriously injured, then follows him as he seeks a missing youngster. In both cases, he stays calm as he informs his new companions of their odds for survival under their respective circumstances.

The opening story involving woodlands, rivers, high cliffs and the like suggests that much of “Tracker” will be set in visually rich locations, and Hartley reports that he’s an outdoorsy sort anyway. He also appreciates that Colter, who typically would rather just do something than explain it, “can be so intense. He doesn’t just let life happen to him, like Kevin did [on ‘This Is Us’].”

“With this guy, if there’s some kind of a problem, he’s the one who’s going to figure it out. And selfishly for me as an actor, it’s wonderful to take on a different role. I loved playing Kevin, but I’m having the time of my life. [‘Tracker’ is] cool, but it’s also believable. I like that Colter is not a superhero. If he gets shot, he bleeds. He doesn’t have an iron skin.”

“The King of Comedy” (Hulu, streaming): Also from Martin Scorsese, superb 1982 film does deal with the comedy business, as the title suggests, but it has a dark theme. Frequent Scorsese collaborator Robert De Niro stars as Rupert Pupkin, a dangerously relentless admirer of a talk-show host (Jerry Lewis, whose background and image go a long way for his character here). A kidnapping results as Pupkin seeks fame for himself; Sandra Bernhard is chillingly memorable as Pupkin’s equally obsessive friend.

“The Rockford Files” (getTV, Friday, Feb. 16): The James Garner series was nearing the end of its run when it presented the two-part 1979 episode “Only Rock ‘n Roll Will Never Die,” putting private eye Jim Rockford (Garner) on a search for the missing producer of a music star. Mardcia Strassman, who was in her final season as a co-star of the sitcom “Welcome Back, Kotter” at the time, is among the guest stars.

Mangia, mangia: See good eats galore in an all-new season of ‘DDD’

It’s time to set the table — the king of flavor is coming to town. Guy Fieri is behind the wheel and ready to eat, as Season 36 of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives” is in full swing, with an all-new episode airing Friday, Feb. 16, on Food Network.

He may be the mayor of Flavortown, but Guy Fieri has become a nationwide delight as he drives his bright red, 1968 Chevy Camaro SS convertible from city to city across America, sitting down for meals that would make even the pickiest chefs ask for seconds.

So far this season, Fieri has traveled to taste some unbelievable eats, diving headfirst into what the network calls a “meaty smorgasbord.” From Tennessee, to Florida, to North Carolina and New Hampshire, Guy Fieri has been driving his way to restaurants of all shapes and sizes, digging into everything from bomb bagels and some classically delicious pizzas and tacos, to elevated versions of American classics, like shrimp and grits. As he tackles the latest and greatest in side-of-the-road cuisine, Fieri has taken to this latest season of “DDD” like a fish takes to water, and the adventure has just begun.

A description given by Food Network shares that this upcoming sixth episode will see Fieri jumping into a full-fledged culinary adventure, “starting in San Diego, where there’s a 2-for-1 spot servin’ Baja-style seafood and rich bone marrow tacos, and a funky food truck puttin’ out next-level shawarma. Then in Taos, [New Mexico], a pan-Asian joint is pullin’ out the stops with curry noodles and a bison Reuben banh mi.”

Guy Fieri hosts “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives”

Following that, the mayor of Flavortown will pack his bags yet again and head out in search of some delicious Thai food, some pie and some hearty fries. “In San Diego,” Food Network says, “an amazing Asian spot is servin’ phenomenal fried fish and righteous ribs. Plus, in Arroyo Seco, [New Mexico], a New Zealand food truck is making mouthwatering meat pies and a modern comfort joint is cooking up a mushroom masterpiece and loaded bison chili fries.”

As episodes air, some of Fieri’s favorite, newly found recipes are shared on Food Network’s website, including the likes of chicken chipotle pie, fried rockfish, pollo borachon (drunken chicken), boss hawg and pastrami beef rib boards, allowing viewers to participate in the chef’s mouth-watering road trip from right at home.

With a never-ending appetite, Guy Fieri continues his culinary adventure in each new episode of “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” airing Fridays on Food Network.

BEST KATHARINE HEPBURN MOVIES

Katharine Hepburn and Cary Grant star in “The Philadelphia Story”

“Little Women” (1933): While the Louisa May Alcott story has gotten the screen treatment a number of times, this early version with Hepburn has endured for the better part of a century.

“Bringing Up Baby” (1938): In one of the movies that define “screwball comedy,” Hepburn plays

a dotty heiress who makes life complicated — as does her pet leopard, the film’s “Baby” — for a paleontologist (Cary Grant).

“The Philadelphia Story” (1940): Hepburn is terrific as a socialite whose imminent remarriage isn’t favored by her previous husband (Cary Grant) nor a reporter (James Stewart).

Turner Classic Movies shows the film Wednesday, Feb. 14, as part of a “31 Days of Oscar” day of nominees and winners for best adapted screenplay (it won).

“Long Day’s Journey Into Night” (1962):

Hepburn is superb as the matriarch of the troubled Thorne family in Sidney Lumet’s film of the Eugene O’Neill play.

“Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner” (1967): The subject of interracial relationships is handled by director Stanley Kramer in the final teaming of Hepburn (who won her second Oscar here) and Spencer Tracy, playing the parents of a young woman (Katherine Houghton, Hepburn’s real-life niece) who intends to marry a doctor (Sidney Poitier).
