Re-enactors share stories of Belle Starr

‘Outlaw Queen’ also remembered as advocate for Cherokees

You think you know all about Belle Starr “the Bandit Queen?”

Three Rivers Museum will shed new light on the reputed outlaw during “Belle Starr Remembered” at 5:30 p.m. Saturday.

History re-enactors will discuss and portray parts of Starr’s life and legacy. There also will be a documentary “The Legend of Belle Starr’s Last Ride.”

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society website, Myra Maybelle Shirley Starr grew up in Missouri. She and her second husband, Sam Starr, settled on Cherokee tribal land along the Canadian River, a place called Younger’s Bend. The cabin became a hideout for outlaws during the 1880s.

Starr portrayer Donna Knecht called Starr an interesting woman.

“She was nothing like she’s been portrayed,” Knecht said. “She had her circle of friends, who were outlaws.”

That circle of friends include Frank and Jesse James and their accomplices, the Younger Brothers.

Knecht said that had Starr not developed the “Outlaw Queen” reputation, history would remember her as an advocate for the Cherokees.

of a

“She would go to court to make sure Cherokees had attorneys present,” Knecht said.

Starr also was highly educated, knew three foreign languages and could play the piano, she said.

“She was outspoken, as I am,”

Knecht said. “She loved her horses. She could outshoot, outride most men. She always rode sidesaddle.”

Knecht said she has a lot in common with Starr, whom she has

Legacy Keepers honorees’ include educator, beautician, historian and barbecue cook

Legacy Keepers can play many roles — educator, beautician, historian, barbecue cook.

Such people make up honorees’ lists for the Legacy Keepers R Us Honors Bruncheon, 11 a.m. Saturday at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Community Center.

The free event will feature lunch and entertainment, as well as awards.

Legacy Keepers R Us is a group dedicated to preserving history in “an informative and entertaining format,” according to the group’s website.

ShIronbutterfly Ray, a group organizer, said keynote speaker will be Wilbur Thomas, an educator and traveler who made a career of helping African countries develop agricultural and other resources.

Retired teacher Dr. Virginia Schoats will be an opening speaker.

Ray said Schoats will get a special legend award “for her long years of education.”

Four “legends,” plus 14 individuals, also will be honored at the free event, which features a lunch, entertainment and awards.

The Legends were community leaders profiled in community heritage calendars published in Muskogee from 1985 to 1993.

“As time has gone on, we don’t use those wall calendars,” Ray said. “My concept was to honor those who were highlighted and who put it together, as well as those we lost.”

Ray said Legacy Keepers R Us is digitizing those calendar profiles, as well as adding new honorees each year.

Legends honored Saturday will be former Summit mayor and

portrayed for four years.

Historian/re-enactor Stephen Dillwyn Christian portrays prosecuting attorney William Henry Harrison Clayton.

Christian said he, as Clayton, will talk about the larceny charge in which Belle and Sam Starr were accused of stealing two horses, April 20, 1882. He said his material will come from a preliminary hear-

“Belle has two counts of larceny and Sam, one, because one of the horses they stole belonged to Sam Campbell, who was also an Indian,” Christian said. “So that does not go to federal court. That would go to a Cherokee court.”

Christian said he also will focus on the outcome of the trial and the main witnesses in the case. He said he will show a digital slide presentation showing original documents from the case.

The Arkansas historian agreed that history has misunderstood

Belle Starr.

“Belle is a legend and myth more than she should be,” Christian said. “We hope as we find more of the original documents that she wasn’t all that people thought she was. She was a typical woman of the time. She had to be tough to live in the territory.”

He said that, in the case of the horse theft, “it’s questionable whether she actually stole it or not,” Christian said. “It’s not clear cut. She’s been accused of a lot of things she didn’t really do.”

He said the horse theft was Starr’s only conviction.

“People seem to think she was the ringleader of a lot of crimes,” he said. “A lot of it was hearsay. A lot of it came up after her death.”

Knecht said Starr was killed while coming back from Fort Smith.

“She had just crossed the Canadian and she was shot in the back, the shoulder and the back of the head,” Knecht said. “Whoever done it — when she fell from the horse — went around and shot her in the face. And it was never solved.”

Music a big part of church programs

First United Methodist and First Baptist churches of Tahlequah use music for worship

Music can set the tone for any occasion, and it has long been an aspect of worship in most churches.

First United Methodist and First Baptist churches of Tahlequah offer a variety of music programs for youth and adults who like participating in services through music.

Children’s Choir Director Judy Young has been part of the music ministry at First Methodist since 1975. All FUMC music practices meet on Wednesdays.

“I like to sing and love the biblical background the music brings to me. I feel a lot of spirit through music; it fulfills my worship time,” Young said.

Dr. Ralph Whitaker was her choir director at Northeastern State University and at the Methodist Church, and invited her to join the choir. He was followed by Dr. Don Studebaker, who retired from the church

music program last year.

Sarah Bailey is the new adult choir director.

“Sarah is young and talented, with lots of new ideas,” said Young. “We have been fortunate to have some of the best directors in Oklahoma from Dr. Ralph Whitaker, Dr. Don Studebaker, Marjorie Malone, and now, Sarah Bailey. We have a great legacy of choral music in place that we hope to continue in the years ahead.”

The Children’s Choir, for students in grades 1-6, meets 3:30 to 5 p.m., and practice includes snacks, rehearsal, recreation, story time and ringing chimes. Hand Bell Choir meets 6:15-7:15 p.m., and Adult Choir rehearses 7-8 p.m.

“The children sing in church about once a month,” said Young. “We’re a small group and always welcome other children to join.”

The children will also be singing at nurs-

ing homes, according to Young.

“Most of the songs are sacred music with religious background. Story time is a Bible story with a moral background,” Young said, who was quick to add she’s had lots of great help from Ashley Franks, Melanie Moden, Jane Bond and Ramona Frazier.

Sunday morning worship at FUMC is 10-11 a.m. Musicians blend contemporary and hymn music, to try to find things everyone can enjoy.

“The adult choir sings every Sunday in church and provides special music on holidays,” Young said. “Everyone’s invited; we never turn anyone away.”

Young is also a substitute in the Hand Bell Choir, for which she used to be full time.

“You’re only responsible for a few notes, so it’s challenging. Linda [Cheatham] knows how to teach bells and perform,” said Young.

Cheatham has played hand bells for 54 years, 24 of them at FUMC.

“It’s a way for people who want to participate who don’t sing or want to read, be a part as a team,” said Cheatham. “You don’t have to read music, but it helps. I can give a private lesson to help someone get a sense of what it’s like.”

She appreciates how hand bells can add something special to music.

“Techniques, like to hit with a mallet, strike on the table or vibrate, can make it sound interesting,” Cheatham said. “It’s something I enjoy.”

Tahlequah has a lot of musical talent for a city of this size, said First Baptist Church Minister of Music Andy Latta.

“First Baptist Church is blessed to be a conduit for some of that talent to be used for God’s glory,” said Latta, who has served there eight years. “I love seeing the talents God is raising up here.”

Teaching children music is where it begins, according to Latta.

“Music in the church is a lifelong

endeavor. Recently, we have been using all of this talent together instead of separately,” he said. “Multigenerational worship experiences are amazing. It is so exciting and uplifting when children, youth and adults are singing together.”

The combined FBC choir will sing ensemble on Sunday, Feb. 25.

“We are also planning an extended multi-generational worship service on Sunday, April 29,” Latta said. “We welcome anyone to come and experience this blessing.”

This summer, the Youth Choir will go on its annual mission trip, this year to serve the community of Gulfport. Mississippi. Members rehearse during the school year, but not in summer.

“Children love music!” begins the youth section of a music brochure Latta created for his church and shared.

“God has given every child a voice. Singing is natural, but it is a talent that needs to be nurtured and developed,” said Latta. “We use music to teach children the Scripture and godly principles while developing their natural ability to sing. Often children will remember Bible verses and godly principles through the songs they learn – into their adult years.”

Like the youth choirs, adult

choir requires no audition, only to love singing, says the brochure. While most enjoy the fellowship and attend practice on Wednesdays, participants can come to rehearsals for the special music at Easter and Christmas.

Of the multigenerational choir the brochure – and Latta himself –continues: “One generation training another generation is a discipleship concept taught in the Bible. This biblical concept is the heart of the

music ministry at First Baptist. This is why we have choirs for children, youth and adults. They are all given the opportunity to experience leading the congregation in worship through special music and congregational singing during our Sunday morning worship.”

Worship service at First Baptist on Sunday morning begins at 8:15 a.m., with Sunday school at 9:30 a.m. Two other Sunday services are at 10:45 a.m. and 6 p.m.

Live from South Korea, it’s the 2018 Winter Olympic Games!

G et ready for more than 2,400 hours of skiing, skating, bobsledding, curling, luge and more as NBC and its partner networks broadcast the games of the 2018 Winter Olympics from PyeongChang, South Korea.

Beginning Thursday, Feb. 8-25 on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app, these games will see nearly 3,000 athletes from 88 nations (plus the Russian federation) competing in seven sports for 102 medals, among them Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White, Kelly Clark, Mikaela Shiffrin, Nathan Chen and Chloe Kim.

There will be four new events at these games – big air snowboarding, freestyle skiing, mass start speed skating and mixed doubles curling – and

viewers across the nation will get to see prime-time and late-night competition live at the same time thanks to South Korea being 14 hours ahead of New York and 17 ahead of Los Angeles.

“There’s no spoiler alert with a call from your aunt on the East Coast if you live in California, that, ‘Hey, did you see this person or that person win a medal?’ ” points out Mike Tirico, who succeeds Bob Costas as NBC’s Olympics studio host with these games.

“And they have to wait to see it three hours. They’ll see it all as it’s happening, it’ll be on live across the country in the evening and then a little bit later on late night on the East Coast, which is prime time on the West Coast. So I think that’s going to be the major difference in the coverage of these games from Asia.”

There will be a few glaring absences in PyeongChang, probably the most significant being Russia, which was banned from these games because of a doping scandal. Any athletes competing from that country will do so under the aegis “Olympic Athlete from Russia” or O.A.R, which should make the medal ceremonies interesting.

Also missing in men’s ice hockey are the players from the NHL, which has opted not to pause its 2017-18 season for the games, thus ending a run of five consecutive Olympics.

“Well certainly that was a terrific competition over the last few Olympic games and not having the National Hockey League players will certainly impact that ...,” Tirico says. “I think we’ll see perhaps a return to that magical 1980

Mike Tirico takes over studio hosting duties for the the 2018 Winter Olympics from PyeongChang, South Korea, beginning Thursday on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics.com and the NBC Sports app.

Mark Feuerstein undoubtedly would like the lease on “9JKL” extended, but in any event, he’s gotten to do his dream project this television season.

The former “Royal Pains” actor has told his own story as star and – along with wife Dana Klein – creator and executive producer of the CBS sitcom that ends its freshman round Monday, Feb. 5. The circumstances of lead character Josh largely are Feuerstein’s own, since he also lived alongside his closest relatives while making an early go of his career. In fact, his reallife parents have appeared on the show during the season, though in the series, they’re played by veteran talents Linda Lavin and Elliott Gould.

“I was told that nobody would be in the Mark Feuerstein business more than Mark Feuerstein,” the friendly Feuerstein reflects, “but it took me a while to catch on that I might want to write my own ticket. It took as long as it took to get to that moment in my career where I could turn to my wife and say, ‘Hey, let’s write this show about my family, because they’re colorful and they might be entertaining.’ And here we are.”

Feuerstein notes that he also took inspiration from such vehicles as Pamela Adlon’s FX series “Better Things,” in which the driving creative forces have couched their personal stories and thoughts in a comedic context.

“I shared with (fellow ‘9JKL’ executive producer) Aaron Kaplan that I was living

feel if the U.S. team can become one that makes a run in the tournament, because we’ll have a lot of college players involved, which is the real essence of that ‘Miracle on Ice’ team. So maybe there’ll be some new names and some amateurs to root for, as opposed to what we’ve become used to of late with the professionals.”

As for the host city itself, Tirico has been there, toured some of the 13 venues and came away impressed with the city’s preparations. He expects PyeongChang to put on a world class show for the opening ceremonies on Feb. 9 and for all 18 days.

“Everything from what we saw when I was there,” he says, “they are ready to go and excited to be welcoming the world there.”

between my parents on one side and my brother, his wife and their baby on the other in New York. And he said, ‘That’s a show!’ It lent itself to a sitcom, and my wife is a brilliant sitcom writer, and it felt like we shouldn’t look a gift horse in the mouth. This just felt like its natural incarnation.”

Planning Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day parties? Food Network has ideas

Welcome to the first half of February, the official midpoint of winter and home of two unofficial holidays that couldn’t be more polar opposites: the Super Bowl and Valentine’s Day. Food Network has culinary suggestions for each in shows airing this week.

In the event you still haven’t finalized your Super Bowl party plans, Food Network has a few ideas on its schedule the morning of the big game, Sunday, Feb. 4. It starts off bright and early with a block of “Valerie’s Home Cooking,” which opens with Valerie Bertinelli hosting a game-day party with former NFL star and current Food Network host Eddie Jackson, and a menu that includes slow-cooker sloppy Joe sliders, homemade potato chips topped with chicken salt and peanut butter brownies topped with salted pretzels. Down, set, hike!

In subsequent episodes, she offers up such comestibles as a cheese ball with herbed crackers, salad with champagne vinaigrette, Italian slow-cooked beef sandwiches and for those palates that demand heat, four-alarm chili, jalapeno poppers and spicy cheesy pull-apart bread. Keep the drinks handy.

Also that morning, Giada De Laurentiis throws a pizza and pasta party complete with cheesy lemon pizza and sausage and eggplant fusilli on “Giada Entertains,” and Ree Drummond puts together a sandwich with tiers of easy mac and three cheeses and onion strings on “The Pioneer Woman.” Hearty fare for your hardy crew.

Later on in the week, it’s time to get your game face off and your romantic face on, as Food opens its “Chocolate Weekend” on Saturday, Feb. 10, getting things going with “The Pioneer Woman,” which

finds Drummond in her kitchen making chocolate treats for daughter Paige and husband Ladd, as well as chipotle chocolate fudge and something called love and kisses cookies.

Then it’s “Trisha’s Southern Kitchen,” in which host Trisha Yearwood invites her girlfriends over for a lunch of linguine with braised red wine short rib sauce and marinated roasted portobellos, finished off with a molten chocolate cake with cassis berries and washed down with chocolate cherry martinis. Decadence at its finest.

In “The Kitchen,” Valentine’s Day food, crafts and sweet surprises are in store as the gang creates foodinspired valentines and Katie Lee makes a trendy hidden heart cake.

Then it’s Bertinelli’s turn to throw a Valentine’s Day party for her gal pals on “Valerie’s Home Cooking,” with a luncheon of whole roasted salmon, green pea arancini with herby lemon dipping sauce and escarole salad with roasted Meyer lemon vinaigrette. And for dessert, the citrus pavlova offers a perfect balance of sweet and tart.

Super-sized opportunities: Shows that have followed the Super Bowl

Net

Picks

“Girlfriends,” acorn.tv/girlfriends

Miranda Richardson (“The Hours”), Phyllis Logan (“Downton Abbey”) and Zoe Wanamaker (“Mr. Selfridge”) are the stars of this six-part British drama series that follows three friends struggling with the problems and responsibilities of being a modern woman of a certain age — namely widowhood, divorce and job loss. Matthew Lewis (“Ripper Street”) and Anthony Head (“Buffy the Vampire Slayer”) also star.

With each year’s Super Bowl comes another contest, involving which show will get the coveted slot following the NFL’s much-watched championship game.

On occasion, the networks have opted to use special programming ... such as the 1989 NBC miniseries “The Brotherhood of the Rose,” which crashed and burned when the late end time of the game caused most workingthe-next-day viewers to invest in their pillows instead of the two-hour opening half of a plot-heavy drama. (That also didn’t help the network the next night, when the conclusion also tanked, with so few eyes having been on the opening portion.)

By and large, the network that has the Super Bowl has stuck with a series premiere or an episode of a notable ongoing show. The latter happens again this year as NBC presents a special edition of “This Is Us” – but not so special that it disrupts the drama’s continuing stories – after Super Bowl LII on Sunday, Feb. 4. Then, NBC will back that up with a new “Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon” from 2018 Super Bowl host city Minneapolis after the late local news; “This Is Us” cast members are scheduled guests, along with Super Bowl LII halftime-show star Justin Timberlake and Dwayne Johnson.

“The Ritual,” www.netflix.com

Rafe Spall (“Roadies”), Robert JamesCollier (“Downton Abbey”) and Arsher Ali (“Line of Duty”) star in this horror movie from Belgium that follows four college pals as they set off on a hike into a Scandinavian forest of Norse legend, only to find an ancient evil presence is stalking them at every turn. Sam Troughton and Paul Reid also star.

Here’s a look at several of the more notable series that got their starts by premiering immediately after the Super Bowl.

“The A-Team” (NBC, 1983): In the first year that the Super Bowl allowed for only one other show in that night’s primetime lineup on the relevant network, the slot went to an action-oriented show that likely would retain much of the audience. Indeed, t he saga of Special Forces officersturned-troubleshooters would have a healthy five-year run ... helped by the iconic status of Mr. T, the matinee-idol looks of Dirk Benedict and the assured acting of movie veteran George Peppard.

“Airwolf” (CBS, 1984): Starring Jan-Michael Vincent and Ernest Borgnine, the adventure centered around a super-helicopter had a super ratings start. The show –which can be seen now on the nostalgia-oriented Get TV –lasted through the late winter of 1985, then had a USA Network revival in 1987 with a different cast.

“The Wonder Years” (ABC, 1988): An unusual choice to hold lots of viewers after a Super Bowl, this wistful, deeply nostalgic comedydrama quickly became a television classic. Narrator Daniel Stern recalled the younger years of his character, Kevin Arnold (played as a boy by Fred Savage).

“The Trader,” www.netflix.com

This Netflix original documentary short follows Gela, an Eastern European who sells household items out of the back of his minibus and travels the country in search of the one true currency in this impoverished region, potatoes. Young and old peer into his truck to check out the modern conveniences like sponges and lint brushes that he has to sell, a juxtaposition that pits rural versus urban values.

Luke Maye getting UNC back on track

In what is turning out to be a backand-forth season for a lot of NCAA Basketball teams, the rivalry between Luke Maye and his defending NCAA champion North Carolina Tar Heels versus the Duke Blue Devils should be as intense as ever when the two teams meet up for the first time this season, Thursday, February 8 on ESPN.

While coach Mike Krzyzewski’s Duke team has pretty much been a top-ten unit this season, things haven’t been so easy for Maye and the ’Heels, who dropped to No. 20 after consecutive losses to Florida State and Virginia a month ago. These came shortly after a 75-70 embarrassing upset in late December to Wofford, a team some have never even heard of.

Ranked fifth at the time of the Wofford loss, the Tar Heels know that when playing up to their potential, they can run with the best of them. Enter Maye, who seemed destined to right the ship in Chapel Hill when he responded to the bad stretch with a 32-point, and 18-rebound effort in a 30-point drubbing of Boston College.

Maye, of course, was one of the heroes of the 2017 NCAA Tournament, sending UNC to the Final Four with a last-second jumper to beat Kentucky in the Elite 8. Now a junior, Maye is having a breakout season, averaging 18 points per game while playing close to 32 minutes, leading the team in points, rebounds and minutes, giving Carolina fans hope for another championship run.

TRAGEDY REUNITES ‘GIRLFRIENDS’ OF A CERTAIN AGE IN NEW ACORN SERIES

If you’re tired of shows about young, pretty people and yearn for stories about those of a certain age, a new series on the streaming service Acorn TV might scratch your itch.

Answers:

ern woman past the age of 50, one that is catalyzed by the sudden death of Micky, the husband of Linda (Phyllis Logan, “Downton Abbey”), a well-kept wife who must now go it on her own after 30 years of marriage.

This brings her back together with childhood friends Sue (two-time Oscar nominee Miranda Richardson, “Tom & Viv”), a high-powered magazine editor in a long-term fling with her married business partner John (Anthony Head, “Merlin”); and Gail (Zoe Wanamaker, “Mr. Selfridge”), who copes with a divorce from the husband she still loves and an adult son (Matthew Lewis, “Ripper Street”) in trouble with the law.

As the circumstances surrounding Micky’s death are investigated, secrets surface that could threaten the newly reunited trio’s friendship.

“I don’t want to issue too many spoilers,” Logan told a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif., “but in episode one, we don’t know what’s happened to Micky, her husband, played by the wonderful Steve Evets. And throughout the series, things chop and change. Suspicion

falls in various directions and then it gets cleared up and then it falls back. So it’s not a simple answer without telling you the whole plot of the six episodes, so I’ve got to be careful about that. But, yes, there are certain things that get thrown up where suspicion may lie.”

A sort of sub-plot to the investigation storyline is Sue’s very dramatic life, which includes a lot of glamour as the boss at a bridal magazine and the discovery that business/bed partner John has been sizing up her replacement.

“I think actually what’s happened is that she’s in denial about what’s really going on in her life,” Richardson says. “And I think maybe (she) is too proud to call on (her friends) for help. So it’s actually Linda’s situation that precipitates the rebonding of the girls and then they discover what they’ve missed ... she certainly discovers what she’s missed. She loses just about everything in the first episode, but then she regains two girlfriends and has a chance to boss them around for a bit before realizing that she hasn’t got all the answers.”
