Let’s face it: You can’t escape Christmas. Between the retail ads, the decorations, the ubiquitous music and everyone wishing you “happy holidays,” you’re basically surrounded. And you probably like it that way.
Same goes for television. Between broadcast, basic and premium cable, you can watch holiday content 24/7 if you so choose. So choose to sit yourself down for the first half of this week and check out some of the more noteworthy programs on tap
Topping the list the morning of Tuesday, Dec. 25, is ABC’s annual “Disney Parks Magical Christmas Day Parade,” in which Jordan Fisher and Sarah Hyland host the annual holiday processions in Florida and California.
That night on NBC, the grumpy green guy twice tries to ruin the holiday for the denizens of Whoville, first in the 1966 animated holiday classic “Dr. Seuss’ How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” and then in the 2000 feature film starring Jim Carrey “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.”
If holiday movie marathons are what you seek, it doesn’t get any better than the yearly TBS/TNT “A Christmas Stor y” marathon starting Monday, Dec. 24, and ending Tuesday So get ready for 24 hours of little Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) pining for a Red Ryder BB Gun and being admonished with “you’ll shoot your eye out.” Additionally, there are “Harry Potter” marathons Sunday on USA Network and Monday on Syfy
If that’s not enough, there are also wall-towall holiday movies to be found the first half of the week on Hallmark Channel and Hallmark

For fans of classic films, the first half of the week offers up a veritable cornucopia of options, starting with the James Stewart/ Donna Reed mainstay “It’s a Wonderful Life” Monday on NBC. There is also “Holiday Inn” and the 1951 Alistair Sim version of “A Christmas Carol” Sunday, Dec. 23, on Turner Classic Movies; “Christmas in Connecticut,” “Babes in Toyland,” “ The Bishop’s Wife” and “A Christmas Carol” (1969) Monday on TCM; and “Love Actually” and “ The Wizard of Oz” Sunday and Monday, respectively, on TNT Classic television is also well-represented this week, most notably with the Festivus episode of “Seinfeld” titled “ The Strike” and the “Friends” installment “ The One With the Holiday Armadillo,” both airing Sunday on TBS. There are also holiday episodes of “Modern Family” (Sunday, USA), “Monk” (Monday, WE tv) and “Doctor Who” (Monday, BBC America). You’ve said in interviews that you keep your Golden Globe best actress award for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” on your toilet. It that true?
Well, there’s a shelf there. Where do you put those things? I live in New York. I have a ver y small apar tment. It’s a wonder ful thing for me but like where do you put it? I don’t know, it was a whole struggle. That’s where it ended up. It really was the only available shelf. It gives me a little booster ever y time I (go in there), which is multiple times a day I’m ver y hydrated.
Still, all the awards and accolades you’ve received for the show had to blow you away, no?
Absolutely I was floored. I still can’t quite – it’s so strange to be on the other side of the table (laughs). I feel a little bit like Midge walking down a totally new path.
You’ve done “Manhattan,” which was set in the 1940s, and “Mrs. Maisel,” set in the ‘50s. Do you think mid-20th century is your niche?
It’s just kind of the way things worked out. It was mostly about chasing brilliant scripts and women I was excited and inspired by. It just so happened that it went from the ‘40s to the ‘50s (laughs). Playing in period stuf f is fun. It feels like magic. I grew up loving reading fantasy
books – “Harr y Potter,” “Lord of the Rings” – all these books with worlds that were bigger than anything I could imagine. And having not been around in the ‘20s, ‘40s, ‘50s, ‘70s, those all feel a little bit that way The worlds that get recreated in front of my eyes that feel far away, it feels like we’re time traveling and I love it. (laughs) I hope this isn’t the last time I get to time travel.

Q: I’ve noticed John Legend turning up on NBC a lot lately. Does he have a special deal with the network? – Tracy Frank, Providence, R.I.
A: There must be some sort of agreement there, given all the work that the recently minted EGOT – Emmy, Grammy. Oscar and Tony winner – has done for NBC in the past year, starting with his Emmyhonored work in “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.” During the holiday season alone, he’s appeared on the network in the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, “Christmas in Rockefeller Center” and the special “A Legendar y Christmas With John and Chrissy” (“Chrissy” being Legend’s wife Chrissy Teigen, of course).

The connection already is set to extend into 2019, too. After being on “NBC’s New Year’s Eve” (as will Teigen), Legend will join NBC’s “The Voice” for its upcoming spring season, ser ving as a coach and mentor alongside returnees Kelly Clarkson, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton.
Q: Would you know if “Suits” and “Gotham” will be returning? – Lawrence Allen, via e-mail
A: As a matter of fact, we would. “Suits” will resume its eighth season starting Jan. 23 on USA Network, and it’s likely that at least one of the episodes will be used to set up the new, Chicagoset spinoff that will star Gina Torres in the continuing role of Jessica Pearson. (“One Tree Hill” alum Bethany Joy Lenz also will be featured in that new show, so she may pop up on “Suits” soon as well.)
“Gotham” returns to Fox even sooner – Jan. 3 – for its fifth and final season. The emphasis will be on Bruce Wayne’s (David Mazouz) transformation into Batman, with Shane West joining the show for its last round as the villain Bane.

Self-taught chef Sierra exudes creativity on her YouTube channel ‘La Cooquette’
Maria Sierra is passionate about food and that comes through in spades on her YouTube channel “La Cooquette.”
With videos shot in English and Spanish, the vivacious native of Honduras shows her more than 640,000 subscribers and other viewers how to prepare simple and easy recipes of her own creation, ranging from American favorites such as Chicago-style deep dish pizza and barbecued ribs to more exotic fare like Argentinian empanadas and frogs legs a la provencal. There are also dishes inspired by television (“The Simpsons” donuts) and movies (“Harry Potter” butterbeer), as well as comestibles that result from her own experimentation (a fried plantain burger).
“I loved discovering new flavors, new flavor combinations,” she explains. “I never liked measuring when I’m cooking. Only when I’m baking, it’s known that you have to follow a recipe otherwise it won’t work sometimes. So when I’m cooking something that doesn’t require that, I just go at it. And I don’t care, I just like mixing stuff together.”
Interestingly though, the self-taught chef freely admits she wasn’t always adept in the kitchen. She began the channel (www.youtube.com/lacooquettefood) in 2013 after moving from Spain to Los Angeles. There, she and her husband Alvaro Hernandez, an aspiring filmmaker, were taking extension courses at UCLA when they discovered she had a flair for explaining things on camera. The trouble, however, was at that point she wasn’t much of a cook.
“I was bad,” Sierra recalls with a hearty laugh. “You can actually talk to my friends and my husband, they can attest to that. Like they would eat my burnt cookies just out of pity.”
But recognizing that they may have the nucleus of a web series, they honed their techniques – she in the kitchen and he behind the camera. Eventually her videos

work from home but then you also have to be very wellorganized with your time. And sometimes it’s really hard to divide, ‘OK, let’s set this time for personal time and let’s not talk about work.’ Luckily we actually hired a full-time employee now. She films and edits most of the recipe videos for ‘La Cooquette.’ ” Sierra’s other passion is travel and she and Hernandez like to make short food documentaries wherever they go, telling the stories of cities, towns and villages through the local cuisine.
“Sort of like Anthony Bourdain,” she says. “In that way, we were really inspired by him and we have some episodes on that, telling really the story of the momand-pop shops, not just the typical places that people go to. We really make an effort to know what the locals eat and what really is their everyday type of food because we believe that it tells a lot about not only the people but of the place.”

Not just a Christmas story, it’s about parents, little brothers, bullies, decoder rings, double dog dares and most of all, the workings of a youthful mind. The writing by Jean Shepherd (who also narrates) captures it all perfectly. Darren McGavin and Melinda Dillon also star.
