Though they hadn’t met before this year’s Kennedy Center Honors, Linda Ronstadt became accustomed to being mistaken for a fellow honoree.
“I used to sign Sally Field’s autograph in the ‘60s,” the music icon reveals. “People would come up to me and say, ‘Could I have your autograph, Miss Field?’ I’d say I wasn’t her, and they wouldn’t believe me, so I just signed her name. There was about a year-and-a-half where we really lined up in terms of our looks.”
One of the top-selling female recording artists in history, 10-time Grammy winner Ronstadt receives one of the most prestigious of all entertainment awards in a CBS telecast Sunday, Dec. 15. Taped the previous weekend at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C., and hosted by past recipient LL Cool J, the 42nd annual event also salutes two-time Oscar winner Field and the children’s series “Sesame Street” (which is marking its 50th anniversary), conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and music’s Earth, Wind & Fire “It’s hard to accept and evaluate your own work,” the good-humored Ronstadt reflects. “I just know it took me a lot of years.” As for the part of receiving the honor she may appreciate the most, she adds, “I’m so happy I don’t have to give a speech! I’ve developed quite a stammer

because of the Parkinson’s (disease, which Ronstadt was diagnosed with in 2012).”
Since a brief filmed biography of the honoree is part of the presentation, Ronstadt notes she finds any career recap “a little daunting. I don’t want people to think the (the work in the) ‘70s is all I did. I did my best singing in the ‘90s, and I really only started learning how to sing in the ‘80s.”
Fans of Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Ronstadt might challenge that. After scoring her first success with The Stone Poneys and the tune “Different Drum,” she launched a parade of solo singles including “You’re No Good,” “When Will I Be Loved,” “Heat Wave,” “It’s So Easy,” “The Tracks of My Tears” and “Poor Poor Pitiful Me” (and such albums as “Heart Like a Wheel,” “Prisoner in Disguise” and “Living in the USA”). Her work eventually covered a number of genres.
“I don’t like listening to my own stuff, because it’s frozen in time,” explains the subject of the well-reviewed documentary “Linda Ronstadt: The Sound of My Voice,” which CNN will show on New Year’s Day. “It makes me think that I was never able to sing. If I do listen to it, I’m astonished at how much work it was and how long it took. And the better I got, the more respect I got. ”

One of the unsung perks of having a streaming player such as Roku or Amazon Firestick is the vast amount of free programming available on their various niche channels. For a foodie ever in search of new ideas, it can be a treasure-trove of culinary knowledge.
Whether it’s a recipe for an Indian dish, a primer on the finer points of barbecue or a guide to craft beers, there is something for everyone on these channels – provided you have the time and patience to wade through it all. The following are a few that caught our eye.

To her irritation, almost immediately she begins clashing with the strong-willed but kind Adam (B.J. Britt), whose grandparents founded the beloved holiday event 60 years earlier. In bringing the world of a DC Comics series by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons to the small screen, series creator Damon Lindelof made what turned out to be a brilliant choice in making his show a continuation, not an adaptation, of the cult favorite. Season 1 has been a big hit with both critics and HBO subscribers, thanks in part to a brilliant cast led by Regina King, Jean Smart and Tim Blake Nelson. That season concludes tonight as “everything ends for real this time,” per HBO.

Last May, ABC blew the roof off the ratings with a special that assembled a cast of current stars to recreate one vintage episode each of “All in the Family” and “The Jeffersons.” The success of that venture, which also won an Emmy as Outstanding Variety Special (Live), inspired this 90-minute follow-up, once again co-produced by veteran TV producer Norman Lear and talkshow host Jimmy Kimmel. Woody Harrelson and Marisa Tomei fronted last May’s special as Archie and Edith Bunker, but ABC hasn’t confirmed casting yet for this new presentation.

Charles Dickens’ beloved Christmas ghost story gets a spine-tingling makeover in this new British adaptation from writer Steven Knight, the scribe behind such gritty British dramas as “Peaky Blinders.” Guy Pearce (“Memento”) stars as miserly Ebenezer Scrooge, who is about to embark on a dark night of the soul as the tale opens. Playwright Neil LaBute adapted a graphic novel series for this dark horror fantasy, set in a postapocalyptic future where a vampire plague threatened to overrun the world until a human(-ish) savior in the form of Vanessa Van Helsing (Kelly Overton) arose from a long slumber to fulfill her destiny as a descendant of famed “Dracula” vampire hunter Abraham Van Helsing. Her adventures at least temporarily hit “pause” after tonight’s Season 4 finale, “The Beholder.”
