Out of this world TV: Season 4 of ‘For All Mankind’ enters new millennium

Shepherd and Willis are ‘Moonlighting’ on Hulu classic corner

Bruces Willis in “Moonlighting”

As many classic series as there are that have been picked up by streaming services, it took a while for one of the most coveted shows to land in that space but the comedy-mystery “Moonlighting,” which typically was a subject of nextday conversation during its original 1980s run, finally has landed in that arena on Hulu. Cybill Shepherd rebooted her stardom while Bruce Willis launched his as they played detective-agency partners Maddie Hayes and David Addison Jr.,, whose verbal fencing is the stuff of television legend.

With the Al Jarreau-perforrned hit title song launching the episodes, the show became famous for being unpredictable – to the extent that ABC sometimes didn’t know if an episode would be delivered in time for its scheduled broadcast. Allyce Beasley plays the agency’s receptionist, and Curtis Armstrong joined the cast in later seasons.

Whether it takes “ one small step” or “ one giant leap” to get to your couch, it “For All Mankind.” The hit Apple TV+ television series “For All Man” is back for a fourth season Friday, Nov. 10, after taking a year-and-a-halflong hiatus. With one Primetime Emmy win under its belt already, the sci-fi drama’s newest season is comprised of another 10 episodes, thus bringing the total episode count for the series to a whopping 40.

The series first made (gravitational?) waves when it premiered on its home streamer in 2019. Marketed as an alternate version of 1969, in which “the viet Union beats the United States to the moon” (per IMDb), the series eimagines history and speculates how this one change in events could have sparked a whole new world order Largely focused on the political and scienramifications of the then-U.S.S.R. making history on the moon, “For All ankind” Season 1 leaned into the idea of a space race that “continues on for decades with still grander challenges and goals.”

ith the premiere of Season 2 in February 2021, the astronauts faced an all-new set of challenges that took place more than a decade after the moon landing. Having confronted everything from lunar ice and trespassers to gender debates in Season 1, the next two seasons promised higher stakes and bigger problems. And on this promise it surely delivered.

om natural disasters such as solar storms and generally harsh living conditions to personal qualms ranging from reckless and selfish behavior to ego-based contests and grand political motivations, there has never been a dull moment on the screen — or in the lives of “For All Mankind’s” fictionalized astronauts and their families.

ne of these astronauts is Edward Baldwin, played by “The Killing’s” Joel Kinnaman. The head of the Baldwin family, which has seen some serious struggles throughout the show’s three seasons to date, Ed is one of NASA’s best astronauts and is rumored to have been based upon real-life Apollo 10 commander Thomas P. Stafford. While Ed has been supported by several family members over the years, including Karen (Shantel VanSanten, “Shooter”), Kel(Cynthy Wu, “Holidate,” 2020) and Shane (played by brothers Teddy and Blum, “Big Little Lies” and “Shooter,” respectively), the only confirmed aldwin returning (other than Ed) is Kelly oining Ed in space and on Earth are returning characters Ellen Wil(Jodi Balfour, “Quarry”), Margo Madison (Wrenn Schmidt, “Nope,” 2022), Danielle Poole (Kr ys Marshall, “Supergirl”), Helios Aerospace founder Dev Ayesa (Edi Gathegi, “ The Blacklist”) and Aleida Rosales (Coral Peña, “ The Post,” 2017).

ewers who are already familiar with “For All Mankind” and who may be wondering what is to come in the newest season need look no further than the official trailer, as issued by Apple TV+ in mid-September Time flies in “For All Mankind,” and in a move that echoes the near-decade jump from Season 2 into Season 3 in June 2022, the fourth season of the series picks up eight years after the Season 3 finale.

“Rocketing into the new millennium in the eight years since Season 3,” reads an Apple TV+ news release from Sept. 13, “Happy Valley has rapidly expanded its footprint on Mars by turning former foes into partners. Now 2003, the focus of the space program has turned to the capture and mining of extremely valuable, mineral-rich asteroids that could change the future of both Earth and Mars.”

But Apple is quick to remind viewers of the darkness lurking in space as “simmering tensions between the residents of the now-sprawling international base threaten to undo everything they are working towards.”

“Family Affair” (Catchy Comedy, Monday, Nov. 5, through Friday, Nov. 9): Executive producer Don Fedderson also was behind “My Three Sons,” and he gave this show’s Brian Keith the same work arrangement that Fred MacMurray had on the other series – with all of his scenes as orphan-guarding “Uncle Bill” Davis compacted into two 30-day blocks for a season. Kathy Garver, Anissa Jones and Johnny Whitaker play Davis’ young wards, with Sebastian Cabot as manser vant Mr French.

“The Fast and the Furious” (USA Network, Saturday, Nov. 11): An enduring action-movie franchise began with this 2001 saga, casting Paul Walker as a Los Angeles policeman who infiltrates a hard-driving crew of thieves led by an expert racer (Vin Diesel, who has been part of most of the direct sequels which number nine to date). Michelle Rodriguez and Jordana Brewster are among the nominal co-stars, but the stunt drivers clearly are as responsible as any of the actors for the success of this picture and its follow-ups.

Cake o’clock: Buddy Valastro premieres two

new shows on A&E

It’s time to have your cake and eat it, too! Buddy Valastro is joining A&E’s Home.Made.Nation with two new series, premiering on the network this Saturday, Nov. 11: “Legends of the Fork” and, immediately following, “Buddy Valastro’s Cake Dynasty.”

“We’re back on TV, baby!” the infamous cake boss himself said. “I’m excited to bring not one, but two brand-new shows to A&E starting this November. Viewers are going to love ‘Buddy Valastro’s Cake Dynasty,’ featuring the whole Valastro family, just a little older and maybe a little more grown-up (maybe!).

“And I hope people enjoy all the great culinary stories I showcase on ‘Legends of the Fork,’ while traveling throughout the country looking for the most iconic food and flavors,” Valastro concluded, giving viewers a taste of his first new series.

During each half-hour episode of “Legends of the Fork,” the superstar baker travels from Los Angeles to New Jersey, out to “ see, hear and taste the stories, histories, legacies and flavors of America’s iconic restaurants,” according to the network. “Buddy explores how these historic eateries offer diners an astonishing panorama of the country’s social, cultural and demographic history, as well as its culinary traditions.”

Following the premiere of his tasty travel series, Valastro invites viewers behind the scenes at Carlo’s Bake Shop in “Buddy Valastro’s Cake Dynasty,” in which Buddy and his extended family work together in order to balance the nonstop demands of their cake empire with their always-hectic home life.

“The business is growing with restaurants, nationwide shipping, automated cake vending and more,” a news release from A&E describes. “[While] baking thousands of cakes, Italian specialty desserts and cookies each day, while also creating the most brain-busting, innovative cakes around,” this new series takes Buddy and the bakery to a whole new level. During this first season, Carlo’s

With sugar, spice and everything nice, Home.Made.Nation welcomes Buddy to the family, as “Legends of the Fork” and “Buddy Valastro’s Cake Dynasty” premiere back-to-back, Saturday, Nov. 11, on A&E.

BEST OUTER SPACE SERIES

10:30 p.m. (FOOD) Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Guy Fieri dives into dishes steeped in tasty tradition. 1965-68): Admittedly, its special effects and “monsters” are primitive by today’s standards ... but back in the day, creator-producer Ir win Allen’s saga of the marooned Robinson family captured the imagination of many a sci-fi fan of all ages.

69): It’s redundant to say how influential and revered the Gene Roddenberr y-mentored series has been, particularly since devotees continue to celebrate – passionately — the original missions of the starship Enterprise nearly six decades later

“Battlestar Galactica” (ABC, 1978-79): Even though the reboot many years later was much more complex and psychological, the initial saga of mankind’s sur vivors against the sinister Cylons was an effective sci-fi adventure in its own right (replete with special effects by Oscar-winning “Star Wars” veteran John Dykstra).

“Firefly” (Fox, 2002): Created and produced by Joss Whedon, this short-lived tale of a fugitive spaceship and its crew retained such a fan base, it yielded the spinoff film “Serenity” a couple of years after the series ended.

“For All Mankind” (Apple TV+, 2019-present): What might have happened if Russia had put humans on the moon before the United States is posed by this acclaimed drama series that starts its fourth season Friday, Nov. 10. Joel Kinnaman leads the large ensemble cast.
