History comes to life with the Battle of Honey Springs

Re-enactments, demonstrations immerse visitors in 1863

RENTIESVILLE — Visitors can watch Civil War soldiers fight and see how they lived during a re-enactment of the Battle of Honey Springs.

The biannual event opens at 9 a.m. Friday with an Education Day. The Honey Springs battle will be re-enacted Saturday and Sunday. Camps open at 10 a.m. each day, with battles beginning at 1 p.m. Admission is $5, or free for people 12 and younger.

Honey Springs Battlefield Historic Site Director Adam Lynn said several thousand people come to the re-enactments.

“We have 30 school groups coming on Friday,” Lynn said. “There will be demonstrators dressed in period-appropriate attire.”

Historians will demonstrate military drills, cooking techniques and other everyday activities. Souvenirs, books and reproductions of clothing and military equipment will be sold.

Re-enactments on Saturday and Sunday will feature speakers, encampments and food vendors.

According to the Oklahoma Historical Society website, the actual

skirmish lasted less than four hours — from around 10 a.m. to before 2 p.m. July 17, 1863.

Lynn said the biannual re-enactments are held in fall to avoid July heat.

Regardless of the date, re-enactments have value, he said.

“It’s a way to bring history to life

Alice Robertson students present ‘Mulan Jr.’

Musical follows rebellious young woman seeking her ‘destiny’

A rebellious young woman finds her destiny fighting Huns in the Alice Robertson Junior High production of “Mulan Jr.”

The musical, set in China, will be at 7 p.m. tonight and Saturday at Alice Robertson’s auditorium.

ARJH choir director and play director Shalyn Gallaway recalled watching the 1998 Disney

cartoon version of “Mulan” with her children.

“I really liked the story. It’s catchy and a lot of fun,” Gallaway said. “The story is about a girl who wanted to break tradition.

“I had to dress the girls up as boys, because I didn’t have enough boys” – Shalyn Gallaway

Young Mulan was an exception, she said.

“She was trying to be herself,” Gallaway said. “She knew she wasn’t like other girls.”

“The penalty for impersonating a man is death,” she said.

However, Mulan accomplishes some heroic feats, including saving a captain’s life. Mulan hatches a plan to capture the Huns.

Back in ancient China, women were meant to be married and serve their husbands, so they knew their place.”

When her father, Fa Zhou, leaves to fight the Huns, Mulan disguises herself as a boy and joins the Chinese army, Gallaway said.

Actually, AR has many girls in the Chinese and Hun armies, Gallaway said.

“I had to dress the girls up as boys, because I didn’t have enough boys,” Gallaway said. “It’s great. They have not complained.

They said, ‘OK, I’ll dress up as a boy.’”

Gallaway said there will be painted mustaches and headpieces that hide the girls’ hair.

Eighth-grader Avery Richter portrays Mulan.

Gallaway said this is Avery’s first musical.

“She’s never done one, and she’s doing a wonderful job,” Gallaway said. “You would never guess this is her first one. She has really studied the part and has watched a lot of other schools’ performances online. She knows her lines.”

Avery said she is a lot like the determined girl she plays.

“I tend to be on the clumsy side, but when I really get determined, I’m able to do what I like,”

Avery said. “Also, Mulan, the way she honors her family is through love. She’s very selfless, willing to sacrifice her life to save

her father. In the process, she makes new friends. I also did a little bit of boxing when I was younger.”

She said the biggest challenge has been learning to control her voice, “and not to overdo it.”

“It’s really about control, but I think I’ve got it down,” she said.

Shiloh Moore plays Mushu, Mulan’s dragon accomplice. Gallaway said Shiloh has performed with Muskogee Little Theatre.

AR teacher Immanuel Valdez has helped with the production.

Gallaway said Valdez has helped with acting and helped the boys with their singing.

ate commander tallied 134 killed and wounded, and a Union commander reported 17 killed and 60 wounded, according to the website.

Work crews have worked to prepare the 1,200-acre historic site for the re-enactment. Work included replacing a wood plank bridge across a Honey Springs branch.

Lynn said the original bridge was a toll bridge, built by William McIntosh, across Elk Creek, north

of the springs.

He said the re-enactment will depict Union forces crossing the Elk Creek bridge.

“The Confederates were forced back across Elk Creek, south of the bridge,” Lynn said.

Oklahoma Historical Society Regional Director John Davis said the heart of the battle took place on Elk Creek.

He said Confederate soldiers were camped near a depot, which was used to store gunpowder.

That decision on where to store the powder hurt the Confederates, he said.

“The Depot was where the confederate camps were set up, and the depot was a powder house,” Davis said. “The powder drew moisture, and it did not fire,” he said. “You had 6,000 Confederates, and 3,000 Unions who were able to overtake the Confederates because their guns would not shoot. They’d shoot some of the time, but most of the time they would misfire.”

Union forces won the battle and went on to ensure Federal control of Indian Territory north of the Arkansas River, including Fort Gibson and Fort Smith, according to a media release.

Davis said the re-enactment brings awareness to the historical site, as well.

“We try help people realize it was an important place in Oklahoma history,” Davis said.

Honey Springs was considered the largest of 107 documented Civil War engagements in what now is Oklahoma, according to a media release. The battle also is known for the large percentage of Native and African American troops involved.

This Hope is a special Christmas music program Tahlequah First Baptist is hosting for the community in December.

Cherokee County congregations begin holiday preparations

Area churches invite the community for fellowship, food and music

Music and delicious meals are most always a part of holiday happenings at Cherokee County churches.

The annual Community Thanksgiving Meal is sponsored by the churches participating in the Ministerial Alliance, and will be held at Tahlequah First Baptist Church Sunday, Nov. 19.

“We’re a member of the Ministerial Alliance. One church does the music, one supplies a pastor; we’re supplying the location this year and our congregation will supply the food,” said Janalyn Satterwhite, children’s minister.

Another free Thanksgiving feast is being planned by Crescent Valley Baptist Church, according to student Pastor Brooks Deatherage. The meal will be offered from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cherokee County Community Building.

“It is an effort to serve our city

and make it a better place,” said Deatherage.

A special 10:45 a.m service on Sunday, Dec. 3, will kick off the

Christmas season at First Baptist with hanging of the green, and decorating the auditorium with poinsettias being placed, according to

Satterwhite.

“Our children will participate in the annual Christmas parade on a float,” she said.

First Baptist invites the community to celebrate the Christmas holiday with a free concert, on Thursday, Dec. 14, at 7 p.m. “This Hope” will feature an a capella group and the church’s choir. Christmas eve, Dec. 24, will be honored with a candlelight service. Satterwhite said there will be a birthday party for Jesus on Dec. 17.

“He’s the reason we celebrate Christmas. We celebrate his birthday like when we get together to celebrate children’s birthdays. Jesus is what church is all about,” she said. “Come be a part of our family and celebrate the holidays with us.”

On Dec. 31, the church will close out the year with another event.

“We end our year with a recognition of the Lord’s Supper. We celebrate him because he’s the risen and so people will know the whole

(See HOLIDAY, Page 10)

Christmas festivities can celebrate Jesus, while children like Faith Justice, center, can still have fun with Santa and Mrs. Santa.

story,” Satterwhite said.

Cornerstone will celebrate Christmas with special music on Sunday, Dec. 17.

A Christmas Eve midnight Mass will be held at St. Brigid Catholic Church. The community is always welcome to attend, but communion is only taken by Catholics. Following the 5 p.m. Mass on Dec. 30, a choir from the Clear Creek Monastery will perform.

First Lutheran Church will host Advent services on Wednesday evenings from Nov. 29 to Dec. 20, and a Christmas Eve candlelight service at 7 p.m. Mother Deborah Jennings, of St. Basil’s Episcopal, said every seven years, two seasons are celebrated on the same Sunday.

“Every seven years, Dec. 24 falls on a Sunday,” said Jennings. “In a 24-hour period, we’ll celebrate Sunday morning, we’ll celebrate the fourth Sunday of Advent with Advent music, and invite the community come back that night. Sunday evening, we’ll have Christmas carols to celebrate the birth of the Christ Child.”

First United Methodist Church will begin a Thanks Living series on Nov. 5, which is also All Saints Day celebration, and members invite the community to join in the study series.

“Near the end of November, an Advent study will start, and we’ll have a Hanging of the Green, too,” said Shana Dry, associate pastor and director of the Northeastern State University Wesley Foundation.

FUMC will have three Christmas celebrations: 10 a.m., 6:30 p.m., and 11 p.m.

“Our Christmas Eve service will be very special this year. It’s at 11 p.m. and includes a candlelight ceremony. The bell tower will ring at midnight, and that’s glorious,” said Dry.

‘The Long Road Home’ recalls a brutal battle in the Iraq War

In 2004, a platoon of American soldiers found itself fighting for survival after being fiercely ambushed in Iraq, a story told in a series premiering this week on National Geographic.

The eight-episode event series In “The Long Road Home,” premiering Tuesday, Nov. 7, recalls the events of April 4, 2004, when the 1st Cavalry Division from Fort Hood, Texas came under fire from militia in Sadr City, a day that became known in military annals as “Black Sunday.” Coming 11 months after President George W. Bush’s “Mission Accomplished” speech, the incident would change the American military’s view of Iraq from a peacekeeping mission to a fight against insurgents.

The story is based on the best-selling book by Martha Raddatz and stars Michael Kelly (“House of Cards”) as Lt. Col. Gary Volesky, the battalion commander who

leads the daring rescue of the troops; Jason Ritter (“Kevin (Probably) Saves the World”) as Capt. Troy Denomy, who leads the rescue convoys into the city; E.J. Bonilla (“Unforgettable”) as Lt. Shane Aguero, leader of the ambushed troops; and Kate Bosworth (“The Art of More”) as Gina Denomy, Troy’s wife. Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”), Noel Fisher (“Shameless”) and Jeremy Sisto (“Law & Order”) are also in the large cast

The series was shot mainly at Fort Hood, on whose grounds the Sadr City set was constructed. It was total immersion for the male cast members, who prepared for their roles by living on the base, doing military training and picking the brains of Army staff. Some got to meet their real-life counterparts, including Kelly, who came away impressed from his conversations with Volesky but slightly unsettled by his interactions with some of his men.

“I showed up and a couple of the soldiers who he’d been working with said, ‘Hey guys, this is Michael, he’s playing Gary Volesky,’ ” Kelly recalls. “And not faulting them for it but every one of them looked at me up and down just like, ‘Good luck, buddy.’ Or they’d be like, ‘You? I don’t know.’ I respect them for the filter they don’t have or don’t (care) to use. But at the same time as an insecure actor, I was like, ‘God dang, this is hard enough, guys.’ ”

“But the second I met the man,” he continues, “I was like, ‘Holy s..., I see. I see what they mean.’ Like I had had him on this pedestal but those guys had him on that pedestal, and I met him and I was like, ‘Wow, he deserves to be on one even higher than that.’ He’s just an incredible, incredible man – and now a three-star general.”

As the fighting raged overseas, wives and families waited back home for word on their imperiled loved ones.

Jason Ritter and Kate Bosworth star in “The Long Road Home,” premiering Tuesday on National Geographic.

Bosworth, who stayed just off the base with the other female cast, got to know the real Gina Denomy and even became friends with her, to the point of exchanging text messages. She says confidence her reallife counterpart had in her was invaluable.

“It was a moving relationship to have,” Bosworth says, “and it’s a rare experience to have something like this with someone because – I dyed my hair her color and I would send her photos and I’d say, ‘I’m turning into you. It’s part of the process. I’m on my way.’ And then she’d say, ‘Oh, you look great.’

“So I think it’s a polarizing experience for people who are having actors portray them,” she continues. “It’s either at arm’s length – you know, they just can’t relive the experience, which I think was the experience of a few other actors on the show. And I was just lucky to have someone who was so willing to share her life with me.”

ACKER

In the Fox Monday sci-fi adventure series “The Gifted,” Amy Acker plays Caitlin Strucker, a suburbanite who is forced to go on the run with her family when it is learned her two children possess the X gene, which gives them mutant powers that make them a threat to what is now a hostile government.

On the show, Caitlin is unwavering in her support of her suddenly embattled offspring, and it’s a sentiment the 40-yearold mother of two found very easy to access.

“I think I would be pretty similar to Caitlin,” the Dallas native explains. “I would be proud. I would just want to be there to support them and protect them. And I think the thing that’s scary about being a parent with mutant children in the world of the pilot is like you don’t want them to be accused of being bad just because of having this power possessing the X gene. And so I think you kind of – I would hope I would really step up for their rights and make sure they were able to be who they were.”

Acker is no stranger to the Marvel and “X Men” universe, having done a 2014 guest-starring turn on “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.” She jumped at the chance to work in this world and this creative environment, making a show that offers what she calls “a new take on the superhero show that revolves around family and sort of fighting for the survival of your family.”

“X has always been this allegory for being the other,” she says. “And sadly, reading the paper every day here, you see how scary

that can be in our society. You would think that we would be past that. But I think it’s really relevant with everything that’s happening, unfortunately.”

digging his

role on ‘Food: Fact or Fiction?’

If you’ve ever been at a dinner party with a bunch of strangers and found yourself at a loss for conversation, then “Food: Fact or Fiction?” might be for you.

Now in its third season Sundays on Cooking Channel, the half-hour series investigates the mythology and adages behind some favorite foods, delves into their history and examines the origins of commonly held food myths – such as the erroneous belief that eating carrots improves eyesight.

Yep, not true.

“It was a press release,” explains the show’s host, actor Michael McKean. “It was a public relations thing. It was somebody trying to sell something that otherwise wasn’t sales-worthy. It’s a very interesting world.”

As someone who likes food but doesn’t consider himself a gourmet or a whiz in the kitchen, McKean nonetheless enjoys what he’s learned from two-plus seasons on the show. He has been surrounded by cooks in his family, starting with his mother (“a very good cook but a Southern cook”), his wife, actress Annette O’Toole (“My wife makes very good stuff”), and his daughter Nell Geisslinger, who is also a writer and producer on the show.

His tastes are pretty conventional. Given his druthers, Italian would be a regular staple of his diet though he admits if it was, “I’d probably weigh 700 pounds.” He also likes chili, a really good hot dog and his wife’s pizza.

“She makes pizza every Saturday night,” McKean says, “and she makes pizza as only an Irish girl from Houston, Texas, can do it. I mean, she just has her own spin on it and it’s legit, awesome pizza.”

What book are you currently reading?

“I am reading a book called ‘The Pigeon Tunnel,’ which is a memoir by John le Carré, the great spy writer. And this is kind of a book of anecdotes and stories about people that he met over the years. ... So I’m really enjoying that. But I also have a big book that I bought second-hand about Walt Kelly, who was the cartoonist who created ‘Pogo.’ And ‘Pogo’ is a great favorite of mine, so I have that one going, too.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“Last night, I had leftovers, and the leftovers are the best kind of leftovers, which is to say it was (wife and actress) Annette O’Toole’s chicken and dumplings, which is a stellar dish.”

What is your next project?

“I’m going to a show called ‘Good Omens,’ which is shooting currently in the U.K. It’s Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett wrote this novel about 28 years ago and it’s a great story. ... And some terrific actors are involved – Miranda Richardson is one of my favorites in the world, and a guy named Jack Whitehall, who is a very funny British stand-up. He’s in it and he’s really, really good. And it’s going to be cool, I think.”

‘Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour’

Net Picks

“Lady Dynamite: Season 2,” www.netflix.com/ title/80046193

Dropping Friday, the second season of this comedy series finds Maria (Maria Bamford) embarking on her greatest adventure — love. She will use all the lessons learned in childhood — mainly what not to do — as she navigates this new landscape with the help of family, friends and pugs. She also takes a job with a streaming service that may or may not be owned by Elon Musk. Ana Gasteyer, Fred Melamed, Mary Kay Place and Ed Begley Jr. also star.

Remember the Alamo. Ozzy and Jack Osbourne certainly did. In Season 1 of their A&E Network series “Ozzy and Jack’s World Detour,” the father/son duo made a stop at the historic San Antonio shrine where in 1982 Ozzy was arrested for public urination. In 2015, 33 years after the fact, the 68-year-old rock legend returned there to make amends.

The trouble was, word got out in the media of their appearance and a mob scene resulted. So in Season 2 of the unscripted series, which gets going Wednesday, Nov. 8, the Osbournes and their crew endeavored to not repeat that mistake.

“We definitely learned so many lessons,” Jack Osbourne explains, “the main one being to not go to a massively public national monument after it’s been reported on the news that we are going to be there. ... So this year my whole production team worked incredibly hard to keep things on the DL. We always keep things very fluid when we are filming, so if things do change due to unforeseen issues, it doesn’t end up killing us.”

In the new season, Ozzy and Jack head back out onto the open road, this time in a vintage 1973 GMC camper, the kind in which Ozzy and Black Sabbath toured the country in the ’70s, to take in the sights and experiences of locations ranging from Florida and Texas to Alaska and Hawaii.

Along the way, the two men went dog-sledding, took in a NASCAR race, went camping and spent some time with family. In Wednesday’s opener, Jack and Ozzy go deep-sea fishing in Key West, Fla., where Jack wrestled in a 40-pound amberjack and first-time angler Ozzy caught several blackfin tuna.

“aka Wyatt Cenac,” www.topic.com/aka-wyatt-cenac

The actor/comic best known for “People of Earth” and “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” is the star and creative force behind this new digital series, in which he plays a Brooklynite who moonlights as a crime-fighting vigilante, the Viceroy, who finds himself confronting self-absorbed parents, upstart artisanal mustard shops and his own relevance in the world.

“It was the first time I caught something that I could actually eat,” Ozzy says. “It was great fun wrangling that tuna. He really put up a fight. The scary thing is that you don’t know what you are going to pull up on that pole. It could be shark.”

In a later episode, the Osbourne men served as honorary race directors at April’s O’Reilly Auto Parts 500 at Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth, where they took in their first race and got the red-carpet treatment.

“We hung out with Kurt Busch ... he was an absolute gentleman,” Jack reports. “He showed us all around his race trailer and let us check his car. I’d definitely go to a NASCAR race again. I loved the entire experience.”

“The entire event was amazing,” Ozzy adds. “The excitement is not unlike the rock and roll world. Meeting the drivers felt like meeting a fellow rock star. You’re talking to them and then a moment later they’re whizzing past you on the track at 200 mph.”

But above all, the whole trip was about father/son bonding. For two guys who for years were often separated by Dad’s very unorthodox work schedule, that was especially important.

“Our relationship has pretty much transformed,” Jack says. “I’ve always had a great relationship with him but now it’s more of a friendship. We have been to so many places and experienced so much together, that it can’t not change things.

“I mean, I think he will tell you I just boss him around all day,” Jack continues with a laugh, “but that’s just him.”

Any knitter or crocheter yearning to learn more about their craft would do well to check out this new half-hour series in which Howell, the former host of DIY Network’s “Knitty Gritty,” walks viewers through a plethora of projects of varying levels of difficulty, shares helpful tips and techniques and welcomes guests from the crafting world.

The Beast unleashed in Oakland

It’s been a tough first half of the NFL season for the Oakland Raiders, who visit the Miami Dolphins Sunday, Nov. 5 on NBC’s Sunday Night Football. Running back Marshawn Lynch’s return to the NFL and his hometown team after a brief retirement was supposed to be the icing on the cake for the Raiders’ high-powered offense led by Derek Carr. But Carr went down early this season with a back injury.

Marshawn Lynch has had one of the more interesting careers in recent decades. A standout at California, his 17 100-yard games is still a school record. He was drafted by the Buffalo Bills in the first round of the 2007 NFL Draft and ran for over 1,000 yards in each of his first two seasons. Injuries and off-field troubles limited his production the following two years, and early in the 2010 season the Bills traded him to the Seattle Seahawks.

Along with quarterback Russell Wilson, Lynch made Seattle’s offense into a winner, and when coupled with one of the best defenses in the NFL, the Seahawks enjoyed a 43-8 trouncing of the Denver Broncos in Super Bowl XLVIII. Lynch had four straight 1,000+ yard rushing seasons, earning his “Beast Mode” nickname. After an injury-plagued 2015 season, he opted for retirement.

Lynch’s production with the Raiders has been limited. Without Carr, opposing defenses have been stacking the box against the run. Getting the running game going will be the key for another playoff run in Oakland.

VICKIE HOWELL BRINGS KNITTING TO THE MASSES WITH ‘THE

KNIT SHOW’

If you’re a knitter or crocheter and can’t seem to find enough content on your favorite pastime, a new web series on YouTube may scratch your itch.

In “The Knit Show With Vickie Howell,” the former host of such DIY Network series as “Knitty Gritty” and “Stylelicious” offers up a generous helping of information, ranging from useful tips and techniques and easy-tomake, downloadable projects to visits by industry experts and celebrities. Along the way in each half-hour episode, there will be field pieces and segments that touch on the mental and physical benefits of the hobby as well as look at the shops, groups and lifestyles of the global craft community.

The series was a long time coming, as Howell received near-constant viewer requests to revive “Knitty Gritty” after the series ended its run in 2008. A successful Kickstarter campaign followed, and before long, Howell and her team were refurbishing a warehouse in her hometown of Austin, Texas, to use as a studio.

So far, the series has been a hit, attracting more than 12,000 subscribers in its first week. Howell speaks to crafters of all skill levels, and she tries to reflect that in the projects she presents.

“Because it was the first season of a show,” she says, “we didn’t want to go full-on into advanced because, you know, for new business you need new business, and for us that means

viewers. So we’ll try to make it a sort of a smattering of complete beginner, advanced beginner to intermediate projects.”

An example of a beginner project, Howell says, would be the hat done in the series’ second episode, which is taught by a woman with dyslexia.

“She said that even though she’s been knitting since she was 5,” Howell says, “she’s actually still a beginner knitter because she’s dyslexic and so she has a really hard time with patterns. And so she wanted a hat that was completely easy to understand, and so a designer worked with her to create this hat that’s knit flat, which is easier than knitting in the round in most cases. And so this is a hat that anybody could make with a little help.”

People who work with their hands are often susceptible to repetitive motion injuries, and certainly crafters are no exception. So with the help of her trainer, Howell came up with exercises for knitters and crocheters designed to keep the orthopedist at bay.

“(They’re for) anybody who uses their hands a lot, who’s sitting down a lot, who slumps over a lot,” she says. “So that’s what the approach was. I also spoke to a therapist about the mindfulness of knitting, about the benefits for calming and mental health. So we wanted to take a holistic look at just this form of creativity as more than just a hobby but a lifestyle.”
