Senior Follies talents to benefit MLT

Performers

tout ‘something for everyone’ with songs, dances and comedy skits

Senior Follies performers are touting “Something for everyone” this weekend.

Songs, dances and comedy skits are part of the ninth production of Senior Follies, Friday through Sunday at Muskogee Little Theatre. Tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children. Proceeds benefit MLT.

Follies co-director Bob Cockle said the show features 40 performers, most of whom are 60 or older.

“We’ll do tap dancing,” Cockle said. “The younger girls will do a ballet. We’ll do jazz dancing. The Red Hot Mamas, that’s our middle group, will do jazz. The older ladies will do tap.”

Dancer Francie Martin said she and other dancers also will do some clogging, which could be seen as tap-plus.

“Clogging routines are more systematic, similar to line dancing,” Martin said. “You always start on your left foot, and there are specified steps in the tapping we do. And it’s done with jingle taps on your shoes. They shake. Jingles have a little jingle to them.”

Some performers will even sing “Something for

everyone,” which comes from a song in the 1966 Broadway Musical “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.”

Cockle said Senior Follies also will feature comedy skits reminiscent of The Carol Burnett Show and “some very good singers.”

Ron Hood said he will sing Eddie Arnold’s “Make the World Go Away.”

Hood said he got to choose the song.

Warner celebrates Cow Chip Day

Town honors agricultural roots with festivities that end in cow excrement

Someone could win big when a cow makes a deposit Saturday at Warner’s 30th annual Cow Chip Day.

Festivities begin at 8 a.m. with the Bull Run 5-kilometer race and mile fun run. The festivities end when a cow poops.

Warner Chamber of Commerce President Aaron Ellis said different events have come and gone over the years, but Cow Chip Bingo has remained.

“It’s not a big purse, but it’s kind of the novelty of it,” Ellis said. “People think it’s fun. Warner has historically been an agricultural area.”

People buy tickets for a square on a grid. Tickets are $3 for one or $5 for two.

At 1 p.m. Saturday, a cow is let loose on the grid and is given the opportunity to relieve itself.

Whoever has the ticket matching the square with the cow’s dung wins a cash prize.

Ellis said $100 is awarded for first place, $50 for second and $25 for third. Ellis said ticket numbers will be drawn if the cow

Moore said certificates will be given to participants. Vendors will vote on a favorite.

Chamber Secretary Alicia Campbell said the day will feature bounce houses and sack races. There also will be booths where people can make stone jewelry or paint rocks, she said. The Porum Landing Fire Department will have sell

V-Dubs on Main brings Volkswagens to Tahlequah

Back again for the fifth year after name change from OKsWagen

Come Friday and Saturday, the Ghias, the Things, the Bajas, and, of course, the Beetles will roll into downtown Tahlequah for the fifth annual festival to celebrate Volkswagens. Now titled V-Dubs on Main, this year’s event will feature a cruise night, live music, a free car show, and prizes.

The name has changed from OKsWagen because it just wasn’t easy to say,

according to Drew Haley, Tahlequah Main Street Association director. V-Dubs is a common name for Volkswagens, so the organization went with a title that was more identifiable with the vehicle.

“Cruise Night on Friday begins at 7 p.m., and an Auto Show on Saturday is always a good time,” Haley said. “This year we have a raffle to win a Big Green Egg cooker, a bicycle and all kinds of goodies.”

to Oklahoma City, so TMSA members decided it was a good event people in the Tahlequah area would enjoy.

Tourism Interim Director Thomas Gardener agrees the event is gaining popularity here.

“I’m looking forward to seeing everybody,” said Gardner. “It’s always an interesting crowd. Since it’s so family-friendly, the people who come out are here to have a good time with friends and family.”

Kids of all ages can put on available smocks and paint a Beetle, or they can enjoy the inflatables set up in Norris Park. Food trucks and a few vendors will also be around the park.

“I love the year they tried to stuff people in a bug,” said Gardner.

That idea came from the Guinness Book of World Records and, in at past events, a Beetle was filled with elementary-aged children and there have been competitions amongst local groups to fit the most people in.

Drink and dinner specials will be available at The Branch, Ned’s and The Grill, with drinks title Hippie Punch, Purple Rain, and Flower Power, according to Haley. The Branch will serve beer and brats and have its Bloody Mary bar open while musicians play on the outdoor stage.

Registration for the auto show is free and cash prizes will include $500 for Best of Show. VW’s will arrive between 8:3010-30 a.m. and judging begins at 11. Prizes will be awarded at 3:30 p.m.

The Auto Show usually has customized Volkswagens that are really cool, Gardner said. He likes that some are used for camping or are just old and people want to show them off.

“I’m glad of the name change, so everyone knows it for what it’s all about,” said Gardner.

The passion and power of ‘Dynasty’ resurfaces in CW reboot

It doesn’t have Linda Evans and Joan Collins this time, but “Dynasty” still has its trademark catfights.

That’s evident right from the first hour of The CW’s new reboot of the famously glitzy, Aaron Spelling-produced 1980s serial that begins Wednesday, Oct. 11. Spelling-series alum Grant Show assumes John Forsythe’s earlier role as wealthy Blake Carrington, whose likely business successor appears to be his strong-minded daughter Fallon (Elizabeth Gillies) until he takes a fiancee: his ex-employee Cristal (Nathalie Kelley), a rival for the Atlanta family’s power that the very determined Fallon expected to be hers.

Partnered again with his “Gossip Girl” and “The O.C.” colleague Stephanie Savage in executive-producing “Dynasty,” Josh Schwartz reasons, “We are definitely living in an age

of dynasties, right? You cannot look at the news across a spectrum of parts of society (without them) ... whether we are talking about Trumps or Clintons or Kardashians or Murdochs, what have you. Our news is filled with the stories of family dynasties, and that is something that was really exciting to us about why to do the show today.”

Actor Show, who thinks Spelling “would love” the “Dynasty” revival, was sold immediately on it. “Blake Carrington is such an iconic character,” he reflects, “and one of the most complicated villains – I’m not sure if he was a villain or not in soap-opera history –and that’s what I’m continuing to strive for, but in a modern era. In 2017, Blake can’t be homophobic in the same way that a 1983 Blake was, but he can have problems with his son (Steven, now played by James Mackay) not being the son that

he wants him to be. Those are the things that I’m working towards.”

Fallon is the first Carrington the new “Dynasty” reintroduces, and her skillful dressing-down of two admirers in the opening scene sets her pace immediately.

“I did watch quite a bit of the original ‘Dynasty,”’ Gillies says, “but I didn’t want to imitate either of the other actresses (originator Pamela Sue Martin, then Emma Samms). I wanted to bring my own thing to her. I think that she has a little bit more, I would say, Alexis in her than the original Fallon. She has a biting wit in which she has a lot of sarcastic, excellent lines. I love her strength, and I think that’s what really drew me to the role. And I did kick it up a notch. Hopefully, people like it.”

Co-star Kelley likes how the new “Dynasty” changes up the character structure, which also encompasses an African-

American Jeff Colby (played by Sam Adegoke) and a male take on Heather Locklear’s former Sammy Jo (who’s portrayed by Rafael de la Fuente). Other figures present again include Carrington manservant Joseph (Alan Dale) and Cristal’s married ex-lover Matthew (Nick Wechsler, formerly of “Revenge,” which fellow “Dynasty” executive producer Sallie Patrick also worked on).

“This modern version represents a more current picture of what’s happening in America,” Kelley believes.

“The diversity of the cast really reflects that. ‘Krystle’ is now ‘Cristal,’ originally from Venezuela. I think it is another really bold and intelligent choice, considering what is happening there right now. And even to the narrative, it’s really exciting and important to be talking about the geopolitics of Venezuela on a CW show. I think that’s really amazing.”

C h e c k i n g i n w i t h Checking in

Ally Walker’s husband runs Fox’s sister networks FX and FXX, but she says he had nothing to do with her landing her role in “Ghosted.” Really.

The former “Profiler” star has returned to series work in the new comedy, which Fox is airing Sundays, playing the police boss of two investigators of the supernatural (Craig Robinson, Adam Scott). She insists, though, that her widely esteemed spouse John Landgraf wasn’t aware of her latest acting job until it literally was a done deal.

“He didn’t even know about the audition,” the lively Walker says. “I was like, ‘Yeah, I’ll just go in and read for it.’ I was actually, really scared, because I hadn’t done this in a long time. It was weird having 20 people in a room staring at you while you were thinking, ‘I’ve been doing this before most of you were born.”’

After Landgraf returned last spring from upfront presentations for advertisers, Walker had “the talk” with him. She recalls, “I said, ‘Ah, you know, I did my deal.’ And he went, ‘What deal?’ I told him, and he said, ‘Oh, great, hon.’ We’ve been together for 21 years, so I knew he’d be fine.”

Also a filmmaker (“Sex, Death and Bowling,” “For Norman: Wherever You Are”), Walker describes “Ghosted” as “a fresh take on the genre” and her Captain Ava Lafrey as “somewhat of a control freak. She knows where everyone is at, and she’s sort of

the straight man to all of the crazies. It’s like being locked in the asylum.”

Improvised humor makes its way into “Ghosted,” and Walker admits that initially, “It was kind of hard for me to keep up. I did a couple of little things, but nothing like these guys (Robinson and Scott). I mean, they just breathe it. They do it. I hadn’t done comedy in a really long time, so I found the best improvisation that I could do would be to react to them and just kind of be really in the scene. (With) someone saying something completely idiotic in front of you, my deadpan became pretty good.”

Andino takes to the streets for

‘Late Nite Eats’

Doing “Late Nite Eats” has been an absolute joy for its host, Jordan Andino.

After all, in what other job do you get to travel the continent, sample a city’s best late-night fare and network with a variety of different chefs while taking in the burg’s sights, sounds and nightlife? And get paid for it?

It sounds like a pretty good gig, but the New York-based chef says he has one gripe.

“And it’s barely a gripe,” he says. “I’m used to working as a chef so I do 14 to 16 hours on my feet in front of a hot stove or as a restaurateur greeting guests, dealing with headaches and what not every day, so I’m used to this at this point. But somehow the filming schedule and the traveling and the living out of a hotel and then the constant flights to and from New York to check on the restaurants and all this, I wasn’t really ready for it and I have a newfound respect for people who travel as their job. It’s highly impressive.”

Each Thursday, Andino heads to a different city to try the after-hours grub, meet the chefs behind them and mingle with the diners. They can range from an eatery in Pittsburgh that serves up almost 30 different kinds of grilled-cheese sandwiches to a soul food and barbecue restaurant in Atlanta. There are also stops in cities such as Montreal, St. Louis, Vancouver, Nashville, Toronto, Charleston, S.C., and Providence, R.I.

In the Oct. 12 episode, he ventures to Portland, Maine, where he found a diverse culinary scene where more than lobster and seafood were on the menu, the themes were imaginative and the drinks were cheap.

“I remember it was Thursday happy hour,” Andino says, “and I went to this bar. ... It was me and friends and

“Mindhunter,” www.netflix.com/title/80114855

Dropping Friday, this new drama series is set in 1979 and stars Jonathan Groff (“Boss”) and Holt McCallany (“Sully”) as agents with the FBI’s Behavioral Science Unit, who interview imprisoned serial killers to learn how they think, then apply it to ongoing cases. Anna Torv (“Fringe”), Hannah Gross (“Men With Brooms”) and Cotter Smith (“The Americans”) also star.

Got room for one more new military drama on your fallseason viewing menu?

After NBC’s “The Brave” and CBS’ “SEAL Team” comes The CW’s “Valor,” premiering Monday, Oct. 9. The series casts Christina Ochoa (of Syfy’s recent “Blood Drive”) and Matt Barr (“Sleepy Hollow”) as U.S. Army helicopter pilots eager to make good on a mission that went wrong in Somalia, by training to return and rescue a colleague (W. Tre Davis) captured by terrorists. Though they have vastly different levels of experience, the duo is bonded by a secret they share.

In a CW lineup still populated largely by superhero shows, with a few sidesteps for offbeat comedies (“Jane the Virgin,” “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”),

“Valor” marks a different move for the network. “We’re very aware of how many military dramas there are,” says executive producer Anna Fricke, “but I do think that what drew me to this, and why I was so excited to get to work with Kyle (series creator and executive producer Jarrow) and this great group, is that this is a female-driven military drama ... which I think does set it apart.”

Jarrow notes, “We are also really making an effort to look at, and really tell those character stories that dig into military life – not just the action stuff, though we’ll deliver that too, but the day-to-day life of folks who serve in the military. What that looks like, what that feels like. So that’s a big focus of ours as well that, hopefully, can set us apart a little bit.”

“Chance: Season 2,” www.hulu.com/chance

Hugh Laurie returns for a second season as San Francisco forensic neuropsychiatrist Dr. Eldon Chance, who reluctantly gets sucked into a dangerous world of police corruption, sexual obsession, fractured identities and violence. In the new season, Chance emerges from his ordeal a changed man and uses vigilante means to avenge violent crimes against his patients. Then his past comes knocking. Drops Wednesday.

Personal knowledge is fueling Jarrow’s efforts toward “Valor,” since he reports, “My brother was in the military, the 173rd Airborne, for a bunch of years. Folks in the military like my brother, like these characters, are human beings. They are sleeping with people, they’re cheating on people, they’re struggling with questions of morality and personal choices. It felt really important to dramatize that in telling a full story of what it’s like to be someone in the military. Hopefully, we can get some good, soapy intrigue in a way that feels authentic and true to the lives of military folks.”

“Valor” star Ochoa maintains that the characters are “human first and military second. I think that everybody deals with relationships and secrets, working in close quarters,

regardless of your professional vocation and your activities and the coping mechanisms that you may have for high stress. These characters just maybe have them to a different degree, but they’re very real. And addiction and PTSD are things that are very important for us to tackle, as well as the relationships.”

In being true to the profession it depicts, “Valor” is going for accuracy in even the smallest details. “Something that’s been really helpful,” Barr says, “is that a lot of our extras and background (actors) are retired military or veterans. It’s been helpful for Christina and me and the cast to learn from these guys and gals, especially in all those subtleties ... the salutes, just the simple composure. I think they enjoy being there.”

“Stupid Idiots,” www.youtube.com/watch?v1HoGN_kK4A

Brian Jordan Alvarez and Stephanie Koenig, the creative team behind “The Gay and Wondrous Life of Caleb Gallo,” team up once again in this comedy series in which they star as two friends who decide to put together a Kickstarter campaign to fund their burgeoning music career and hopefully get out of the mindless office job they don’t completely understand.

Journeyman Martellus Bennett lands in Green Bay

The Green Bay Packers are an early favorite to represent the NFC in Super Bowl. An improved defense and the fact they have Aaron Rodgers in the prime of his career are part of the equation. But Rodgers is also getting some help with the addition of veteran tight end Martellus Bennett, who came to the Packers as a free agent after winning a Super Bowl with the New England Patriots last season. Bennett and the Packers face another one of Bennett’s former teams when they visit the Dallas Cowboys, Sunday, Oct. 8 on Fox. Bennett came into the league with Dallas as a second round draft pick in 2008 and spent four seasons as Jason Witten’s backup and, at times, part of

a two tight end set. He then spent a year with the New York Giants before moving on to the Chicago Bears, who traded him to New England a month prior to the 2016 NFL draft. After Rob Gronkowski suffered an injury, Bennett became the starting tight end and put together one of his best seasons to date, including drawing a key pass interference penalty that helped seal the Patriots’ overtime win in the Super Bowl over Atlanta. He signed with the Packers as a free agent and has a three-year contract. Bennett again has the luxury of one of the league’s best quarterbacks throwing to him this season, making a second straight trip to the Super Bowl a very real possibility.

The McMonigle Team is headed by John McMonigle, who has fought his way back from bankruptcy in the real-estate market crash. He’s taking on The Relegance Group, currently the top firm in that market — and its “queen,” Jojo Romeo, has a loaded personal history with McMonigle, too.

Her suspicions are aroused by the president of the deceased man’s country failing to order a full investigation. Eric Stoltz, an executive producer of this show as well, also reprises his recurring guest role.

MONDAY

8 p.m. on KQCW Valor

As you might expect with this brain-teaser of a show, not a lot of information is available about what to expect in Season 3, which opens tonight with an episode called “Eps3.0power-savermode.h.” The action picks up immediately following the Season 2 cliffhanger, with Elliot (Rami Malek) somewhat predictably having survived being shot by Tyrell (Martin Wallstrom). Elsewhere, expect some insights into the disintegration between Elliot and Mr. Robot (Christian Slater). Carly Chaikin and Portia Doubleday also star.

The fantasy-drama series undergoes a major reset for its seventh season, which opens here with “Hyperion Heights.” Henry Mills is now an adult, as played by Andrew J. West, and he and his daughter (Alison Fernandez) set out on a new quest to try to ensure that good wins out over evil. Though a number of the original cast members have left, Lana Parrilla, Robert Carlyle and Colin O’Donoghue are among the actors who remain. Gabrielle Anwar is a new co-star here.

The CW certainly has its share of superheroes, but the premiere of this military drama revolves around heroes of a more down-to-earth nature. They’re U.S. Army helicopter pilots whose mission to Somalia went tragically wrong, with the only two returnees (Christina Ochoa, Matt Barr) keeping certain details quiet. When they learn that one of their comrades (W. Tre Davis) is still alive and being held by terrorists, they start training to go back and retrieve him in this “Pilot.”

HE’S NOT ‘CRAZY,’ HE’S JUST THE FOUNDER OF AWESOMENESS

“Seinfeld” fans may recognize the name of Joe Davola as the “Crazy” recurring character from that classic 1989-98 NBC series. But his real-life namesake is actually a savvy TV veteran behind one of the more successful digital platforms today.

Co-owned by DreamWorks Animation and Verizon Hearst Media Group, AwesomenessTV boasts channels on YouTube, Netflix, Hulu, go90, Facebook and other websites, and is responsible for such teen-oriented scripted shows as “Project MC2,” “Freakish” and “Foursome” and unscripted series like “IMO” and “Daily Report.” It’s also created “AwesomenessTV” for Nickelodeon and the feature film “You Get Me.”

Its content is wildly popular around the world, as evidenced by its subscribers in the hundreds of millions and views in the billions.

Davola founded the company with his producing partner Brian Robbins (“One Tree Hill,” “Smallville”) in 2012 as a sort of dream project one embarks on later in one’s career.

“(We looked at it) just like as a creative thing not knowing what it was going to be ...,” Davola, 62, explains. “I wasn’t looking at this as a moneymaking venture. I was looking at this as the next step of something I wanted to do. I was going to go off and direct and produce. I was going to take this on. ... It was like, ‘This is my time to take all the things I’ve wanted through my career and re-establish it and start all over again.’

“It was really exciting because I was working with young people,” continues Davola, who has worked in production at MTV and Fox. “I’ve always been working in the youth

market. All the places I’ve worked at really dealt with teens or 18-24 year-olds, so this wasn’t something that was unnatural for me to do.”

It didn’t take long for the brand to catch on. A year after it launched, AwesomenessTV and its parent company Awesomeness were sold to Dreamworks and Verizon for more than $100 million, retaining Robbins (who has since left the company) and Davola as consultants.

“We keep on moving,” Davola says. “We’re probably going to expand all our businesses, making more and more stuff that’s going to go on more digital outlets and we’re going to make more movies. You know, we have a very hearty appetite, so we have movies in production right now, we have TV series in production that are going on to different digital platforms. And then we’re going to increase the types of programming that we do on the Awesomeness network also. ...”

“I always say, when a shark stops in the water it dies,” he continues. “So we’ve just got to keep on going. So we have a huge appetite and we keep on pushing ahead.”

As for his “Seinfeld” connection, that came out of his friendship with series creator Larry David. Davola is amused by the notoreity it’s gotten him and grateful for the association.

“I was glad I did it,” he says. “I was glad I said yes to have them use my name. I knew what the character was. You know, it’s just like a cool, little thing. We’re in the entertainment business. You’d better have fun. ... And this is a fun thing. It was one of the greatest sitcoms ever made, so I was glad to be associated with it.”
