‘Halloween’ is among horror classics marking big bir thdays

Along with its scares, Halloween is an occasion for celebration, and several of its most popular movies are celebrating milestones this season.

Ranging from spirited comedies to nail-biting thrillers, the films involved have been entertaining fans for many years. Here’s a look at those treats – and where you can sample their enduring tricks in the coming days.

“The Exorcist” (45th anniversary; streaming on Netflix): Director William Friedkin’s film of William Peter Blatty’s best seller made Linda Blair an instant star as Regan, possessed daughter of an actress (Ellen Burstyn) and target of two priests’ (Max von Sydow, Jason Miller) efforts to drive the devil out of her.

“Halloween” (40th anniversary; AMC, Monday through Wednesday, Oct. 29-31: A new sequel – complete with original star Jamie Lee Curtis – is in theaters now, but director and co-writer John Carpenter’s initial thriller started an entire horror subgenre. It’s still one of the most profitable independent features yet.

“Beetlejuice” (30th anniversary; Country Music Television, Sunday, Oct. 28): While it gave Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis substantial early roles, this ghostly comedy largely serviced title star Michael Keaton’s taste for the comedically strange.

“Child’s Play” (30th anniversary; CMT, Oct. 28; Paramount Network, Oct. 31): Do not – repeat, do not – pick up a doll that looks like Chucky. Chances are good it’s possessed by a killer‘s spirit, which a youngster and his mother (Alex Vincent, Catherine Hicks) are late to learn in this opener of a franchise that has proven Chucky never is gone for good.

“Hocus Pocus” (25th anniversary; Freeform, Oct. 28, 30 and 31): For some people, watching this Disney fantasy-comedy – about sibling witches played by Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy – continuously at Halloween is as much a tradition as viewing “A Christmas Story” repeatedly at Yuletide.

“The Nightmare Before Christmas” (25th anniversary; Freeform, Oct. 29-30): Tim Burton’s intentionally, expectedly bizarre mashup of a couple of holidays makes Jack Skellington the Santa you didn’t know you wanted.

“Jurassic Park” (25th anniversary; streaming on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon and iTunes): Less geared toward Halloween specifically than general, good-anytime thrills, Steven Spielberg’s take on the Michael Crichton novel makes prehistoric creatures wondrous as well as plenty scary.

How did your new role as a celebrity ambassador for horse racing’s Breeders’ Cup Classic come to be?

For many people, it will seem like a new involvement but for me, it’s kind of going back to my past. I was a spor tscaster for many years before I got into “The Bachelor,” and even more recently, the reason I moved to Los Angeles was to star t a horse-racing network.

I was ver y much a par t of the horse-racing industr y. I know (trainer) Bob Baf fer t and I know (jockey) Mike Smith, and I was so excited to watch them each win the Triple Crown. I’m a big horse-racing guy and I love it, and if you know me at all, this is actually a pretty good fit.

What’s your anticipation for this year ’s Breeders’ Cup Classic?

The Breeders’ Cup truly is the greatest day of racing, with all due respect to the Triple Crown. The Breeders’ Cup is 10 derbies in a row It’s a whole day of Kentucky Derbies, the Super Bowl of horse racing – and I’m proud to be a par t of it again.

Though Justify was retired after winning this year ’s Triple Crown, what are your thoughts on the value of having such a horse in subsequent racing events?

To have a Triple Crown know what the horse that risk-and-reward much and push him too as a fan of the spor t to see Justify come out win the Classic. What have been and what horse racing.

By the time you read this, you should have all your Halloween treat ideas locked, loaded and ready to go. If not, there’s still time to get it all together –provided you turn it to Food Network and Cooking Channel for some last minute tips.

The crew on Food Network’s “Let’s Eat” has a few suggestions the morning of Sunday, Oct. 28, episode, when Brandi Milloy shows how to make sticky and sweet candied apples dipped in white chocolate, sanding sugar and melted marshmallow, Vivian Chan shares knowledge on her festive Halloween treats, and Stuart O’Keeffe makes savory meatball mummies.

Also that morning is an episode of “The Pioneer Woman,” which finds host Ree Drummond whipping up chocolate butterscotch caramel bars, dipped and decorated waffle cones and something called Ladd’s chocolate pie. And in early afternoon, it’s Ina Garten and “Barefoot Contessa: Cook Like a Pro,” in which she uses her favorite ingredients to make a chocolate pecan meringue torte and salty oatmeal chocolate chunk cookies. Calling all chocolate lovers.

The culinary creativity continues that afternoon over on Cooking Channel on “Extreme Cake Makers,” where the planning of a Halloween bash and the baking of a ghoulish cake are both underway; and on “Cake Wars,” in which the bakers battle it

out to see who has the best “Addams Family” cake creations.

The pickings are certainly offbeat and in the spirit of the season in the Monday, Oct. 29, episode of Cooking’s “The Best Thing I Ever Ate” titled “Frightfully Good,” which offers up a menu of fried brains, duck tongue tacos, a spleen sandwich and pig tails. Serve this at your bash and make it one your guests will talk about for years.

Over on Food that same day is an episode of “The Kitchen” titled “Harvest of Horrors!,” where viewers can get ideas for different Halloween treats and learn how to make green chicken chili and a Mac-O’Lantern, which is actually orange bell peppers carved to look like jack-o-lanterns and filled with macaroni and cheese. Because everything tastes better stuffed with mac and cheese.

And on Wednesday, Oct. 31, Food’s “Farmhouse Rules” finds host Nancy Fuller and her crew hard at work on such holiday-oriented comestibles as a cheesy spider dip, bursting intestines, a pumpkin mousse, bloodshot buckeyes and black death fizzes.
