Boo-nanza participants get ready for Halloween fun

Downtown Muskogee hosts scares, super heroes, candy and carnival games

Downtown Muskogee hosts spooks, super heroes and other specters Saturday during Boo-nanza.

Festivities run from 5 to 10 p.m. Saturday with trick or treating and carnival attractions from 6 to 8 p.m. The fun spreads along two streets: Main Street, from Court to Cincinnati streets, and Broadway from Main to Third Street.

Main Street Muskogee Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director John Newby said he expects several thousand to come.

“Many of the children dress up,” Newby said.

Newby said youngsters “simply visit all the trick-ortreating stands and businesses

along the route.”

Neighbors Building Neighborhoods Program Manager Laura Hazen said several downtown businesses and nonprofit agencies will have booths. Neighbors Building Neighborhoods help the nonprofits set up their booths, she said.

“We’ll have carnival games, we’ll be handing out candy,” Hazen said. “The entire event is free.”

She said participating agencies and businesses include Lake Area United Way, Arvest Bank, Muskogee Public Library, Muskogee Republicans, Three Rivers Museum, FIRSTAR Bank, Muskogee Swim and Fitness, Habitat for Humanity, Muscogee (Creek)

Inflatable attractions give youngsters the opportunity to bounce away the calories from all the candy they get at Boo-nanza. The event returns to downtown Muskogee on Saturday.

Fort Gibson residents will be ‘Smokin’ the Fort’ at barbecue event

Festivities to include bluegrass music, Meet the Cooks and children’s barbecue contest

Fort Gibson’s Smokin’ the Fort BBQ and Bluegrass Festival offers treats for your tastebuds and your ears. Festivities begin 6 p.m. Friday with a bluegrass jam session, a Meet the Cooks session and a children’s barbecue contest.

Fun and food pick up again around 10:30 a.m. Saturday with a Kansas City Barbeque Society cook-off and a Taster’s Choice cookoff. The event is sponsored by

the Fort Gibson Chamber of Commerce.

Chamber Executive Director Michelle Smythe said the weekend is a family-oriented event.

“And you get to eat lots of good barbecue,” Smythe said.  She said at least 25 teams are competing in the KCBS cook-off, and 16 teams, mostly local, are in Taster’s Choice.

Smythe said KCBS contestants vie for part of a prize pot totaling $6,900.

Taster’s Choice contestants, which are judged

locally, vie for part of a prize pot totaling $2,000. Smythe said many local teams get involved with Tasters Choice.

“The Fort Gibson police always do a Tasters Choice,” she said. “OG&E and Neal Boatright at Urban Station are going to have a team together.

Visitors can vote in a People’s Choice competition.

“The people who buy the Taster kits get to go around and put their tickets in a bucket for the one they like best,” Smythe said. “The one that gets the most tickets

gets a recognition prize.”

Alissa Gage of Sizzlin’ Bones BBQ Commissary said the barbecue cook-off offers all sorts of tastes. There’s the tangy, mustard and vinegar-based Carolina barbecue, mesquite-smoked Texas barbecue, dry-rubbed Kansas City cue and saucy Memphis style.

Gage said KCBS contestants are coming from as far away as Alabama.

Smokin’ food isn’t just for grown-ups.

Friday night’s Kids’ Q will have two divisions, 10 and under and ages 11 through 15.

Cash prizes will be awarded the top three places in each division.

Brothers and sisters will be allowed to share the same cooking source.

Kids’ Q entry fee is $20 per participant.

There also will be snack vendors catering to tastes beyond barbecue.

Visitors can hear lots of banjo picking and mandolin plucking through the festival.

Mike Williams with SpringStreet said musicians can gather for an acoustic jam session Friday night at the Centennial Park gazebo.

“You never know who’s going to show up,” Williams said. “We’re just going to have some picking and a-grinning, hang out with some people we know.”

The music picks back up around 10:45 Saturday morning, he said.

“We have three bands playing,” he said. “Each band will be playing two 45-minutes sets.”

Bands playing are Muskogee favorite SpringStreet, Common Tyme of the Oklahoma City area and Borderline Bluegrass from Missouri.

“It’s just good music you can bring your whole family to and everybody can enjoy,” Williams said.

Boo-nanza

Nation, Bank of Oklahoma.

“All will be handing out candy,” Hazen said. “And most of them are participating in the carnival, which means they’ll be handing out cotton candy, popcorn, or something of a carnival nature.”

Muskogee Public Library

children’s library assistant Shannon Brown said the library’s booth will have coupons for Sonic Drive-In. She said library representatives often come to Boo-nanza.

“It’s actually a way to get in touch with different people in the community who don’t use the library,” Brown said. “It’s actually a fun event.”

Edible delights aren’t limited to the sweet stuff, however.

Newby said there could be eight food trucks, including local favorites Frank-N-Swine, The Fish Hut and

Trinity Lodge.  Hazen said the carnival will feature a variety of inflatable bounce houses. And expect plenty of music, she said.

“I know Square Deal Music is going to have a stage out in front of their store, she said. “Max’s Garage is going to have a stage down on the corner.

Square Deal owner Michael Davis said a disc jockey will set up in front of the store and spin Halloween music. He said songs could include “Monster Mash,” “Bad Moon Rising,”

“and, of course, Michael Jackson’s ‘Thriller.’”

“We always a big booth for the children,” he said. “My wife puts together a nice, big, spooky place to give away candy. She does it in our big hallway that leads up to the third floor of our building. It was a really, really big hit last year. We had so many children who wouldn’t even come in there because it was so spooky.”

Square dancing good for the body and soul

A fun way to improve mental and physical health, make friends along the way

For people who don’t dance because they have “two left feet,” square dancer Joe Morris has news for them.

“I have two left feet and I can do it, so can you!” said Morris, president of Tahlequah’s square dance club, the Kuntry Kuzzins.

In the third grade, Morris first learned to square dance, and as an adult, he’s been dancing for about 35 years.

“I like the friendship and camaraderie, the exercise,” said Morris. “I

read somewhere it gets your mind going and keeps Alzheimer’s at bay. It builds strength and stamina, and you get better the more you do it.”

Kuntry Kuzzins is open to everyone. People can come on their own or as a couple.

“We have some ladies who come by themselves and some gentlemen; we all dance together,” he said.

It only takes a willingness to try for people to learn to square dance, according to Morris.

“You have to be mobile to do it, but if you really want to dance, you

can do it. You just can’t be afraid to try,” he said. “We have a really good time. If people mess up, we just laugh with them and keep on dancing.”

Square dancing is a fun way to improve mental and physical health and make friends along the way. Learning the dance patterns and movements can challenge the mind and keep it active, as well as the body.

The basic movements build into complex patterns.

“Everything builds on itself,” he said.

It’s easy to learn the basic steps, such as circle left and circle right, do-si-do, allemande left and allemande right. There are 58 basic moves or patterns, and the new group is up to 22.

Morris said that before members can go dance with other clubs they have to be proficient at the steps.

“We keep going back over what’s been taught to help people learn,” he said.

Kuntry Kuzzins started beginning square dance lessons in September and are about two months into a four-month plan. They meet at the First United Methodist Church gymnasium and are working toward January ABC’s, he said.

“Most clubs are held in Tulsa so we’ll probably go there,” he said.

It will be next fall before new lessons begin, but those with experience are welcome to join any time, even if they’re a bit rusty, said Morris. He calls square dancing, “friendship set to music.”

There are dance clubs on every continent, in every country, in every state or province, according to Morris, and it is a good way for active, contemporary people to meet one another and build a circle of friends.

Square dance clubs are readymade groups of friends, he said.

“The dancing is done in couples, with teams of four couples. It is not a spectator sport; it’s for the active in heart and mind,” said Morris.

Like most organizations, he said, it’s hard to get young people in, and most of the members are older. There are two couples in their 30s.

“So we have four young people. Everybody else is retirement age,” Morris said.

About 20 people were in the club when 16 more started lessons this fall. Some had danced before.

Bob Lloyd is their caller.

“He brings music on computer. All callers are high-tech nowadays,” Morris said. “It’s hard to get musicians to come and play for that.”

Experienced square dance callers teach the moves and the names of the calls that are danced. Those moves get practiced until they feel as natural as walking. Then the square dance caller combines the basic moves and steps into whole dance patterns, which is called bits, or two songs.

Apparel has changed a little over the years. While some ladies still wear the frilly dresses and petticoats, prairie skirts are more popular now.

“My wife wears the long prairie skirts, but she has the dresses with petticoats, too,” Morris said. “Most people adhere to dressing up for dances, but practice is casual.”

Footwear still includes boots, but some wear tennis shoes with tape put on the balls so the shoes slide.

Kuntry Kuzzins practice on first and third Saturdays each month, and they dance an hour and a half to two hours.

“We usually dance a bit and take a break,” Morris said.

People with experience who would like to join or to sign up for next fall’s lessons can call Joe and Ruth Morris, 918-457-8564 or 918-931-1712, or Judy Young, 918-931-1042.

M any of the names – starting with the title – and some of the theme music will be familiar to fans of a 1970s action series.

Originally made by TV megaproducer Aaron Spelling and current “Blue Bloods” supplier Leonard Goldberg, the police drama “S.W.A.T.” gets a CBS reboot starting Thursday, Nov. 2. “Criminal Minds” alum Shemar Moore assumes Steve Forrest’s earlier role as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, leader of an elite Special Weapons and Tactics Team ... but the new incarnation of the character often is torn, having to play cop (literally) on the Los Angeles streets where he grew up.

Those who know the original show – which inspired a Samuel L. Jackson-starring 2003 movie, too – also will recognize the names of officers Jim Street (Alex Russell, succeeding

Robert Urich), “Deacon” Kay (Jay Harrington, in Rod Perry’s ’70s part) and Dom Luca (“The Shield’s” Kenny Johnson, taking over from Mark Shera).

Stephanie Sigman, who shared the lengthy single-camera opening sequence of “Spectre” with Daniel Craig’s James Bond, and Lina Esco (“Kingdom”) star as well.

Along with filmmaker Justin Lin (“Fast & Furious”), the executive producers of “S.W.A.T.” include Shawn Ryan, the mentor of the gritty, aforementioned “The Shield.” He maintains the way to do “S.W.A.T.” now is “honestly, and in a grounded way. I think the characters are heroes, and I think you can be pro-police and yet also be pro-truth, but there are certain instances and times and events that shouldn’t happen. That’s what fascinated me about this show, to look at the police and the communities

that they’re policing, and figure out if there is a way to bring these communities closer together.”

Ryan admits he wasn’t sure how much CBS would want to delve into that theme within the type of procedural show the network is known for, but he maintains its executives “really encouraged us to tell the story and tell the truth that we wanted to tell. I was very sort of moved by that.”

“S.W.A.T.” star Moore continues his relationship with CBS after his long tenures on “The Young and the Restless” and “Criminal Minds,” and he claims the series reflects “just what’s happening today. It’s Black Lives Matter, and as much as some people don’t want to hear it, it’s All Lives Matter. It’s not just black versus blue or black versus white. It’s every ethnicity. It’s fear. It’s racism. It’s

terrorism. It’s subject matter of today. I don’t want us to preach to you. It’s not going to be heavy. This is ‘S.W.A.T.’ You’re going to have a good time. It’s a thrill ride. It’s everything you know ‘S.W.A.T.’ to be, but I really believe we’re going to surprise you.”

The timing of “S.W.A.T.’s” return is significant, since this year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of metropolitan L.A.’s first such team. “I’ve known a lot of cops over the years as I’ve worked in television,” Ryan reflects. “A lot of them, I really admire. We are all aware of the stories of cops doing things and behaving in ways that we don’t agree with, and I spent seven years working on a show that highlighted that (‘The Shield’). I think there’s a way to try to bridge the gap between those two, and that’s what this show is going to try to do.”

Though her character took a major header off a hotel balcony, Angelique Cabral can’t stay away from “Life in Pieces.”

That Season 2-ending fate for newlywed Colleen was devised by the CBS comedy’s writers and producers to give the actress a maternity leave from the series, which starts its third round Thursday, Nov. 2. Cabral and her composer husband Jason Osborn welcomed a daughter in September, and while a hospital bed is her main set for the early weeks of the show’s return, Cabral is ready to explore Colleen’s married life with new husband Matt (Thomas Sadoski).

“I knew that they had to do something to hide my pregnancy in Season 3,” the lively, friendly Cabral says of having started to film the episodes before she gave birth. “I had heard there was going to be some sort of exit for Colleen that would lend itself to hospitalization, and I gave the writers a big head’s-up about my pregnancy. Though it wasn’t originally scripted that way, it was changed so that Colleen had an accident.

the balcony? It’s just so typical of her, and I loved it so much.”

Cabral continues to embrace the structure of “Life in Pieces,” which tells four short stories per week about various family members (with James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, Colin Hanks and Betsy Brandt among other principals in the ensemble cast). “There’s a truth and a sensitivity there,” Cabral reflects. “It almost makes you want to cry sometimes because it’s so true to life, and people really respond to the things that our characters are going through. And I am so pleased and honored that they give me such yummy stuff to do.”

Throwing a a Halloween par ty? Halloween party?

‘The Proper ty ‘The Property Brothers’ have a few ideas a

If you really want to get “Property Brothers” Jonathan and Drew Scott talking, ask them about Halloween.

It’s a holiday the twin HGTV stars are passionate about, having celebrated it since childhood with elaborate parties, imaginative costumes and well-thought-out decor designed to scare the living daylights out of any who dare to visit them on Oct. 31. In fact, they’ve even built numerous haunted houses, including one on the Brooklyn Bridge at the New York-New York Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

“Maybe we’re Halloween snobs, I don’t know,” Jonathan Scott says. “We believe that if it’s a Halloween party, it is mandatory that you are in costume. That’s why, whenever we throw something, we say to folks, ‘Be creative, be fun, let loose.’ Last year, for example, my girlfriend and I hosted a ‘Stranger Things’ Halloween party. And it was really fun using the string lights to do like what they had in the show when they could tell when the spirits were coming. And then it’s all about a number of things. You have to have themed food, themed drinks. The décor can be quite simple.”

The food needn’t be fancy, they say, but it should be bite-size and shareable. For example, if finger foods are on the menu, why not make them look like actual fingers? This can be accomplished by cooking small sausages or wieners and cutting semicircular bits out of the tips to resemble nail beds. That might earn a few double takes.

For drinks, you can come up with your own themed concoctions, find plentiful ideas on the web or simply add a few simple but spooky touches to conventional cocktails,

such as dry ice to give that vodka tonic the look of an evil potion.

“We’ve done dry ice,” Jonathan says. “You know, like if you have a martini where you have an olive in the glass, you basically can skin a grape or you do something so it looks like an eye. Like you have little touches that it just gives it that extra spooky flair.”

The Halloween table can have different levels and textures with plenty of oranges and blacks and fake cobwebs. You can even have a separate candy table for the kids.

And then there is the obligatory Halloween cake.

“Always make it something fun for the kids, something visual.” Drew Scott says, “Visual is always an important part of Halloween. Like last year I did a giant spider cake but the spider broke up into miniature spiders within. And then down the side of the table, we actually had all these fake spiders that were on a web all the way down. And so it’s just creating that spooky atmosphere.”

Above all, the brothers stress that you don’t have to go to great expense or trouble to put on a successful Halloween party. But they say a little imagination can go a long way in impressing your guests.

“They’ll be amazed at how authentic it feels and how much work you put into it ,” Jonathan says, “but in reality it’s very, very easy to look like you’ve thrown this amazing Halloween party.”

Consider Tony Denison an optimist.

When word came down in early October that Season 6 of his TNT cop drama “Major Crimes” would also be its last, the actor who has played LAPD Detective Lt. Andy Flynn for 13 years across two series recalled another time when the end appeared nigh – and wasn’t.

“I remember when ‘The Closer’ ended and I was on the red carpet in the SAG Awards ...,” he says. “And they had said, ‘Well, now that ”The Closer“ is ending, how does it feel?’ And I said, ‘Well you know what? ”The Closer“ ending, you never know.’ And then ‘Major Crimes’ came along.

“So while I have no idea what is going to happen here ...,” he continues, “who knows? It could wind up someplace else or it could be reinstated by the network. One thing I know about Hollywood is that the only thing you can be sure about is that there’s nothing to be sure about.”

The opening arc, “Sanctuary City,” begins with the disappearance of three teens, one of whom is a “dreamer” or an undocumented migrant. “ ‘Sanctuary City’ deals with a lot of the political issues roiling the country,” series creator and showrunner James Duff explains. “I’m not a political writer and I don’t take a stand on political views. I just write about what’s going on in it. The country is so polarized right now. To not write about the issue of immigration in some way or another seemed inauthentic, especially since it’s affecting the law enforcement community in a very, very powerful way. And so we took on that issue.”

The new season will also bring back Billy Burke as Season 3 (and “The Closer”) villain Phillip Stroh, a serial killer who appears to be at it again. And for personal storylines, Duff indicates Provenza’s role will be bigger and Sharon will experience a physical challenge and – at last – matrimony with Andy, a development Denison welcomed.

“Alias Grace,” www.netflix.com/title/80119411

Based on a true story, this six-part miniseries stars Sarah Gadon (“11.22.63”) as Grace Marks, a young Canadian woman who in 1843 was convicted of the brutal murders of her employer and his housekeeper and sentenced to life in prison — then was exonerated 30 years later. Dropping Friday, the series also stars Anna Paquin (“True Blood”) and Zachary Levi (“Chuck”).

But what seems certain, at least at this writing, is that the series will open its sixth and final season Tuesday, Oct. 31, with the first of a twopart storyline. The final 13 episodes will take a serialized approach, focusing on three murder cases, each surrounded by complex political issues. As Cmdr. Sharon Raydor (Mary McDonnell) gets acclimated to her new boss, Assistant Chief Leo Mason (Leonard Roberts), Provenza (G.W. Bailey), Tao (Michael Paul Chan) and the other detectives will find themselves questioning their faith as they try to negotiate a rapidly changing justice system and avoid controversy.

“Fearless,” www.amazon. com/Season-1-Official-Trailer/ dp/B075X411ZX/

This six-episode thriller stars Helen McCrory (“Peaky Blinders”) as Emma Banville, a human rights lawyer who sets out to prove the innocence of Kevin Russell (Sam Swainsbury, “Mum”), who she believes was wrongly convicted of a girl’s murder 14 years earlier, and uncovers a web of secrets and collusion with both personal and national repercussions in the process. Wunmi Mosaku (“Black Mirror”), Jonathan Forbes (“Catastrophe”) and Robin Weigert (“American Horror Story”) also star.

“Mary looks like an angel walking down the aisle, she really does,” the actor says. “I mean, the way they lit her is just great. And it was a good episode.

“Obviously as Andy, and me as Tony, as an actor, I enjoyed those emotions,” he continues, “and we had a lot of twists and turns in the episodes following and there were a lot of conclusions in the event that this is the end of the road for us – or let’s say if it stays the end of the road for us, then certain things will be resolved. And for Andy, there’s a lot of intensity and I’m pleased that the writers gave me those scenes to do.”

Miller, Broncos are getting defensive

Two seasons ago the Denver Broncos were making a Super Bowl run, courtesy of a swarming defense led by linebacker Von Miller, who would eventually be the Super Bowl MVP. It’s looking like déjà vu this season as Miller and the Broncos are once again terrorizing opposing offenses. This week it will be Alex Smith and the Kansas City Chiefs who host Denver, Monday, Oct. 30 on ESPN.

After a solid college career at Texas A&M, Miller was projected as a Top 5 pick in the 2011 NFL draft. The Broncos took him second overall. The pick paid off quickly, as Miller forced a fumble on his first play from scrimmage and went on to become the NFL’s Defensive Rookie of the year. Denver continued to build a defense around Miller, and in 2014 acquired veteran linebacker/defensive end, DeMarcus Ware, solidifying the unit.

In 2015 quarterback Peyton Manning stabilized a sluggish offense while Denver’s defense took over. Miller became the third youngest player to record his 50th sack, and by late in the season it was obvious this team was going to be a tough out. Miller recorded 2.5 sacks and an interception of Tom Brady in the AFC Championship game, and was Cam Newton’s biggest problem in the Super Bowl, where Miller had another 2.5 sacks and two key forced fumbles; one that was returned for a touchdown.

If the Broncos’ offense can continue to help their defense this season, another solid run for Miller and Denver is likely in the works.

This critically acclaimed sitcom about the afterlife is such a seamlessly original comedy that it’s hard to pick out individual strands among the masterful tapestry, but cast member D’Arcy Carden never fails to stop the show with her hilarious deadpan performance as Janet, the artificial intelligence that keeps things running smoothly. Or not, as in the case of the new “Janet and Michael,” in which Michael (Ted Danson) needs Janet’s help to determine the case of a pesky new glitch.

FRIDAY

9 p.m. on SYFY Superstition

The Dredge (W. Earl Brown) sends a “Trojan horse” to the Hastings Funeral Home, determined to gather important information about the coveted Ring of Solomon, but Calvin and Isaac (Brad James, Mario Van Peebles) manage to subdue the intruder and foil the mission. Their success comes at a stiff personal cost, however, in the new episode “The Dredge.” Robinne Lee also stars.

Season 5 draws to a close with the finale “Time Takes a Cigarette,” which sees Ray (Liev Schrieber) traveling to New York to arrange an illegal surgery he hopes will save Smitty’s (Graham Rogers) life. Winslow (Susan Sarandon) agrees to help, but as usual, that support comes with some very unpleasant strings attached. Meanwhile, Mickey (Jon Voight) tries to get out of jail by pulling a fast one on Ray, while Daryll (Pooch Hall) is conflicted over his loyalty to the Donovan patriarch.

IT’S A PAUL REISER DOUBLEHEADER WITH ‘STRANGER THINGS,’ ‘RED OAKS’

Paul Reiser is a busy man these days, and if you’re viewer of streaming TV you’re about to see a whole lot more of him.

In addition to his roles on Amazon’s “Red Oaks” and Netflix’s “Stranger Things,” both of which kicked off their new seasons in recent weeks, Reiser’s Nuance Productions is responsible for the upcoming Hulu series “There’s ... Johnny!,” among other projects, and the man himself is about to embark on a set of stand-up appearances later this year.

Yes, the Emmy-nominated former star and co-creator of “Mad About You” has a few irons in the fire.

“It’s not deliberate that many of them seem to be coming to fruition now in the beginning of the fall,” the 60-year-old New York native says. “But yeah, it’s kind of cool. And ‘Stranger Things,’ I just jumped onto their train and that I guess was always planned for Halloween release. And the other thing, ‘There’s ... Johnny!,’ which is finally coming out, is soon. It’s been 10, 12 years in the making so it’s kind of funny that happens till fall right in the cluster with everything else.”

In “Stranger Things 2,” which began streaming its nine new episodes last week, it’s 1984 and the citizens of Hawkins, Ind., are still suffering from the horrors of the Demigorgon and the secrets of Hawkins Lab. Will Byers (Noah Schnapp) has been

saved from the Upside Down, but a new evil entity looms for those who survived.

This season, Reiser joins returning cast members Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown and Cara Buono to play Dr. Owens, who the actor says is sent to “clean up the mess of last year.”

“It was great fun,” Reiser says, “and it’s a much bigger production than last year, and they really took their momentum and their clout and they used it to put it all on screen. I mean, each episode is truly as action-packed and as suspense-filled as a full movie.”

As for “Oaks,” now in its third and final season, Reiser returns as Doug Getty, the imprisoned Wall Street financier and country club president who plans to save his beloved Red Oaks.

“He maintains his innocence,” Reiser says of his character’s insider trading conviction. “As he says, ‘Hey, I didn’t do anything different than anybody does all year, than anybody does every day on Wall Street.’ Except he got nabbed. ...”

“We only made 26 (episodes) all together,” Reiser continues, “and I think they’ve done a really nice job of moving these characters along, taking them to different places. And certainly my character, who was sitting on top of the world in the beginning, is not as we meet him this year.”
