Anthony Hopkins stars in stars in “Westworld,” premiering “Westworld,” premiering Sunday on HBO. on HBO.

Hedonism takes a holiday in HBO’s ‘Westworld’

A s theme parks go, Westworld is about as adult as it gets.

As portrayed in the new HBO drama series “Westworld,” inspired by the 1973 Michael Crichton feature film and premiering Sunday, Oct. 2, it’s a place where monied clientele get to live out their fantasies in an Old West setting.

Want to take down a desperado and his gang in a saloon shootout? You can do that. Torture a confession out of a bandit? You can do that, too. Bed a prostitute? Yep, as many and as often as you want.

Your every fantasy can be indulged without fear of repercussion, injury or death. The only limitation is how deeply you want to explore your own desires.

Of course, all these characters in your fantasy are actually very humanlike robots known as “hosts,” which cry apparently real tears, bleed apparently real blood and die apparently real deaths.

That is, until their theme park overseers and programmers haul them in, clean them up, wipe their memories and put them back out to service the next group of paying “guests.”

The only problem is some are beginning to malfunction, some due to a faulty update to their programming, others for reasons unknown. And that could mean danger for the guests – and ultimately everyone at the park.

Heading Westworld is its founder and creative director Dr. Robert Ford, a brilliant, taciturn man played by Anthony Hopkins, who likens his character to another famous theme park creator.

“He’s like a Walt Disney,” Hopkins says. “He’s created this theme park and he lives and he breathes this theme park. ... It begins to run out of his control and he knows there’s something amiss because these robots, these hosts are beginning to act out on their own. They have their own motives, and

Jeffrey Wright’s character reports to me, ‘There’s something going wrong.’ ... He discovers that ... these robots are beginning to think for themselves and turn against the humans.”

The task of discovering what is going on with the hosts and fixing it falls to head programmer

Bernard Lowe (Wright, “Confirmation”), whose keen observations of human nature drive the creation of these artificial people.

Among the more problematic are Dolores (Evan Rachel Wood, “True Blood”), a beautiful and kind rancher’s daughter who begins to discover the true nature of her existence; and Maeve (Thandie Newton, “Mission: Impossible II”), a madam with a knack for reading humans, who begins to go rogue.

Filming the first season’s 10 episodes proved to be an emotional experience for Newton, who had to consider her own existence in creating a robot prostitute with problems.

last season, thanks to the enthusiasm he injected into the set after months of long filming.

Kevin Smith’s ‘Flash’ mission: To reinvigorate cast before ‘grueling’

crossover

For those of you paying attention to movie director Kevin Smith on Instagram, you know he’s journeyed back to Vancouver as he prepares to helm his second episode of “The Flash.” After directing Season 2’s “The Runaway Dinosaur” – widely regarded as the best of the year – he’s back to tackle the seventh episode of Season 3.

The cast and crew of the show has been loud and proud about the experience of working with Smith

“To see the joy out of that guy, you’re like, ‘That dude is a fan.’ And last year was the perfect time,” executive producer Todd Helbing tells Zap2it. “You get into episode 21, 22, 20 ... It’s been six months of filming and those guys work 16 hour days, it’s tough on everybody – cast and crew. That amount of enthusiasm and a reminder that, look we’re making the best f–- show on television and this is all s–- that we loved growing up, it really sparked a lot of energy.”

Now he’s hoping Smith will film a new set of crossover episodes, which will encompass “The Flash,” “Arrow,” “Legends of Tomorrow” and CW newcomer “Supergirl.”

“He’s coming in for episode 7 and it’s going to do the same thing for the front of the season, right before the crossover,” Helbing explains. “Those crossovers are grueling on the actors.”

Luckily, if Smith’s social media posts are any indication, he’s just as excited now as his first time on set that it’s bound to rub off on the cast.

“We’ve got lots more action sequences and fights to shoot in this (episode) so I’ll likely be hiding like

“We had to really consider everything because every detail of our existence as robots – but also potentially the humans, too – is going to be questioned in the series,” she says. “So understanding the simple baseline was crucial – you know, where we were sort of springing from. So I didn’t know whether I was going to have to speak with a funny voice or whatever.

“(Series creators Jonathan Nolin and Lisa Joy) were saying they wanted us to be as human as any human, to totally relax into it,” she continues. “That sort of seems liberating but actually it complicates it even more because then the moments where we do have to separate and behave when we glitch is almost more difficult to do because we’re so natural and human. ... To suddenly introduce something robotic really stands out. ... They’re subtle and they are very disturbing.”

I am in this pic the whole time I’m here, terrified of improving as a visual storyteller,” he writes on Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/p/BKEJkiOA7l6/ ?taken-bythatkevinsmith). “Or maybe, just maybe, I’ll try to shoot the s–- out of it instead – especially because the episode contains a lot of ‘First’ moments and super heroic sparring spectacle.”

After “The Runaway Dinosaur” leaned so hard on emotional storytelling, it’s exciting to hear Smith will get to try his hand at some hardcore superhero fights. The only downside is fans will have to wait until episode 7 to see just how well he did.

Thandie Newton stars in “Westworld,” premiering Sunday on HBO.

The focus is on technique in Season 4 of ‘Lidia’s Kitchen’

To speak with Lidia Bastianich, even over the phone, is to be inspired to cook.

Indeed, the chef, author, restaurateur and host of PBS’ “Lidia’s Kitchen,” which returns for its fourth season Saturday, Oct. 8 (check local listings), is also a teacher at heart who will casually rattle off the steps in preparing one of her recipes for anyone who asks, the goal being to get people into the kitchen and try making one themselves.

“This season, we’re really focused on technique,” she explains, “and what we included ... is a master class. So one of the recipes has a master technique, and I take that technique and I kind of recite it for them step by step: ‘In making this dish up, this is important. Choose the right rice. Have a great stock. The ratio of rice to stock takes one cup of rice to make two cups of finished risotto, and it takes about three cups of liquids to get there and about 14 minutes.’ And so on down the line. You know, I kind of will recite the whole technique of what I’m going to show them.”

Probably the simplest technique that anyone can use to turn out a professional quality meal, Bastianich says, is searing – especially with shrimp. For this, you need a good, hot cast-iron pan – and some patience.

“When you do this technique do not overcrowd the pan,” she says, “because if you overcrowd the pan you get cooking and steaming and they’ll release their waters and then that’s finished. You want, whatever you put in that pan, to have enough space to get a crust. So if you do shrimps, do it in two or three batches. Just put them individually in in the hot pan, turn them around quickly because shrimps take two or three minutes to cook and then they’re done. Scallops you can do that and so on down the line.”

Got that? Now get cooking.

What book are you currently reading?

“You know, I just finished Eric Ripert’s ‘32 Yolks.’ I wanted to (read) his biography. I just finished it.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“I’m (in Italy) and I went to visit a friend who’s a winemaker and he’s a hunter. ... He made a big kind of mound of polenta; he made a frico, which is a traditional dish around here; and then he roasted some sausages and wild boar. This is all on an open fire. That’s what we had. We finished with a plum tart. Plums are in season.”

What is your next project?

“My next project is actually my autobiography. That’s why I read Eric Ripert’s. I’m working on that, which should come out in 2018. But the immediate project is that I do once a year a special that we co-produce with WGBH, ‘Lidia Celebrates America.’ And this is American heroes. It’s going to be on veterans and I interviewed some wonderful veterans.”

When was your last vacation, where and why?

“You know where I went two months ago? Galapagos, and that was a real vacation. It was wonderful. It was wonderful because it is so genuine. And what’s marvelous and kind of amazing is that these animals, they know it’s their turf. They look at you and like to say, ‘OK, what are you doing here?’ And to see the animals so at peace with their surroundings, with themselves, it takes you back to almost the beginning of evolution.”

‘Great Human Odyssey’ tells a fascinating
of a flourishing species

Modern science tells us that Homo sapiens first walked the Earth 200,000 years ago in Eastern Africa. How the species managed to migrate to all seven continents, adapt to extreme environments and dominate the planet is the subject of a new documentary airing this week on PBS’ “NOVA.”

The two-hour “Great Human Odyssey,” premiering Wednesday, Oct. 5 (check local listings), uses interviews with historians, anthropologists, geneticists and archaeologists to paint a picture of a species that progressed from a few thousand hunter-gatherers living a precarious existence in Africa to populate every corner of the globe, along the way teaching themselves survival skills such as language, hunting, diving, weapon making, boat building and ocean navigation.

But how did they acquire the tools that enabled them to survive and thrive even in Saharan heat or an ice age? Anthropologist Niobe Thompson looked at the methods of primitive modern-day cultures for clues, such as a group of nomadic reindeer herders in the Russian Arctic, who in the film appear quite comfortable in temperatures of minus-40 or lower. For them, reindeer are key to their survival system, supplying them with food from their meat and clothing from their skins.

“One of the things that you soon discover is that the winter is a resource,” Thompson says. “The cold is a resource. It’s not an enemy. The cold keeps things frozen. It’s easier to travel over the tundra when it’s frozen. The reindeer, which are your walking larder of food, are more comfortable in the winter. The insects aren’t bothering them. So, if you have the technology to survive in that kind of world, it’s actually much more comfortable than summertime, which is wet, hot, and buggy. Right? So winter is the good time. And what we tried to do with this film is show what a wonderful way of life it is.”

Through genetic testing of remains, scientists posit that humans migrated from Ethiopia to Europe and Asia about 100,000 years ago. From there, one group moved to North America on the land bridge across the Bering Sea while another went south across land to what is now the Pacific islands. From there, those another group sailed east to South America.

Tens of thousands of years later, these peoples all share much of the same genetic coding that our Ethiopian ancestors had, whether Asian, African, European or from the Americas.

“The diversity of colors, the diversity of language, and everything that you see has happened very, very recently in human history,” says paleontologist Dr. Bernard Asfaw, who appears in the film. “We are at least 7 million years old, our species, our genus ... but Homo sapiens are the late comers and the last ones. And the diversities that you see in the world, it is very, very, very recent. And the difference between us as it’s been proved by the geneticists, it’s almost minimal. That minimal difference in the one that you see, all colors, that some of us try to capitalize for nothing.”

Kiefer Sutherland of “Designated Survivor” on ABC

“ ‘Peaky Blinders,’ I enjoy a lot; I watched a whole season in one go. ‘Game of Thrones,’ I think the caliber of the writing and acting is extraordinary, but the actual physical presentation is just fantastic. And I’ll still go back and watch some of the early ‘ER’ episodes, because I think what they did from a production standpoint was extraordinary ... the amount of movement they had. I always like to remind myself of that. And I’m a big fan of ‘Ray Donovan.’ Talk about a supporting cast.”

TARAJI P. HENSON OF “EMPIRE” ON

FOX

Mariah Carey is a guest star in the Oct. 5 episode of “Empire.” How did you find working with her? She was great. I mean, she’s fabulous. She’s beautiful to look at. Wish I could wear a leotard like that, and those heels. I mean, she brings a sense of ... what Mariah brings to the music industry, she brought it to our show. I’m grateful that she spent time with little ol’ us.

Much of “Empire’s” drama remains driven by you as Cookie and Terrence Howard as Lucious. Does playing out the conflict between them still feel fresh to you? This friction between these two characters, sometimes they can when you read it, it seems mundane – but then it challenges the artist to make it new and fresh each and every time, to peel back yet another layer of this complicated, complex relationship. So it’s challenging for all of us.

What do you think is Cookie’s main driving force at this point?

I think at the core of her very being is her family, her boys. Anything, any decision she makes, anything she does, it’s for the good of her family. I don’t know what parent doesn’t understand “by any means necessary” when it comes to your children. Something just takes you over She may make decisions or choices that a person who doesn’t have a child couldn’t even understand. Her deciding to go to jail for 17 years to save her boys from being statistics, that was a conscious choice she made. She could have ratted Lucious out. She could have said, “He was just as dirty as me.” But he was the talent, and if she’d gone to jail, how were her boys going to eat? Who was going to save them from being another statistic from the ‘hood? So everything she does is for the greater good of her family.

Bill Hader of “Documentary Now!” on IFC

“I have three kids so I have tons of kid stuff. And then I’ll do very random movies off of TCM or Encore and stuff. Like TCM is having this early African-American movie night. It’s pretty amazing, like all these silent films, like from African-American filmmakers, and these movies are really cool. Movies I’ve never seen before ... . Like I don’t watch a lot of TV shows per se unless my wife’s watching something.”

Kristen Schaal of “The Last Man on Earth” on Fox

“ ‘Bob’s Burgers,’ ‘Last Man on Earth,’ all my friends’ shows, and all the shows that people who are reading this like a lot.”

Geena Davis of “The Exorcist” on Fox

“Well, the first show I binge-watched was ‘24,’ which was after it came out on DVD. Then we did that with every other season as it came out.”

Nobody in baseball currently throws harder than the Chicago Cubs closer Aroldis Chapman. The best teams in the National League are about to find that out as Major League Baseball’s playoff rounds begin this week. Barring a historic collapse (Chicago entered September with a 15game lead in the NL Central division), the Cubs and eventually Chapman will take the field when the National League Divisional Series begins Friday, Oct. 7 on FS1 and the MLB Network. This is Chapman’s third team in the past year. After defecting from Cuba he signed a six-year contract with the Cincinnati Reds and by early 2012 was the team’s closer. Along the way he amazed everyone in baseball with his 100-mph fastballs, which helped make him one of the most effective closers in the game. The Reds made the post season in 2012 and 2013 but have fallen on hard times and are rebuilding.

Prior to the 2016 season Chapman, who was suspended for 30 game over a domestic dispute, was traded to the New York Yankees. The Yanks, however sent him to the Cubs prior to the 2016 trade deadline. His presence has helped reinstall confidence in a team that opened the season on a roll but stumbled mid-season, but still has a pitching staff among the league’s best..

A free agent at season’s end, it’s anyone’s guess where he’ll be next season. But this October he has a chance to help the Cubs overcome one of the longest championship droughts in sports history.

POSITION: Relief Pitcher NO.: 54

HONORS & ACHIEVEMENTS: All-Star, 2012–2015; Fastest pitch in MLB recorded history (105.1 mph), 2010; Fastest MLB pitcher to reach 500 strikeouts

P e y t o n L i s t f i n a l l y Peyton List finally
t u n e s i n t o ‘ F r e q u e n c y ’ tunes into ‘Frequency’

Strange as it may sound, Peyton List had never heard of the movie from which her new CW series is reimagined. And when she finally did check out the 2000 Dennis Quaid/Jim Caviezel drama “Frequency,” she was pleasantly surprised.

“I don’t know how I missed it,” says the 30-year-old Baltimore native and star of the hourlong drama of the same title that premieres Wednesday, Oct. 5. “Everyone else saw it. I don’t know what happened.

“I remember they told me in the breakdown of the pilot that it was a remake from a movie in 2000, and I was like, ‘Oh. I consider myself a total movie junkie. I don’t know how I missed that but I’ll check it out after I read the script.’ And I read the script and there were certain things that were clearly throwbacks and homages to the movie that I didn’t pick up on, and once I did finally see the movie I was like, ‘Oh, that’s cool.’ And it was so wonderful.

“Like I talk about it like no one else has seen it. I’m (telling my friends), ‘This is a great movie. You should go and see it,”’ she says with a laugh. “And they were like, ‘Yeah, we know. We saw it when it came out.’ ”

In the series, List plays the female version of the Caviezel character, Raimy, an NYPD detective who discovers she can communicate via ham radio with her father Frank (Riley Smith), a fellow cop who died 20 years earlier when Raimy was 8. Unlike the movie, Raimy didn’t have a happy relationship with her dad, who left her and her mom (Devin Kelley) behind when he went deep undercover, got corrupted and got killed – or so the official story went. But few people knew about the secret undercover sting operation Frank was really involved with. Meanwhile, Raimy is left with a lot of feelings of betrayal and resentment.

“Forging a relationship when you believe that your parent is somehow a negative influence on you,” she says, “... I think that adds a different element to this relationship as they try to proceed and get to know each other, the fact that it’s not starting on solid ground. It’s starting with a lot of baggage.”

Net Picks

“The Ranch,” www.netflix.com/title/80077977

Favorite book: “Well, I don’t have an interesting answer for that. It’s definitely ‘Harry Potter.’ Just which one? I’m a crazy ‘Harry Potter’ fan. Maybe ‘Harry Potter 6’ (‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’).”

Favorite movie: “I couldn’t even begin to pinpoint it. ... I like the three-hour epics as much as I like the hour-and-a-half light, silly movies. ... One movie, if it’s on, I will not leave my couch until it’s over, is ‘Under the Tuscan Sun,’ and I can’t even tell you why. Like, I just love that movie so much. How do you not like the idea of just picking up everything and moving to Tuscany? I mean, nothing sounds better to me (laughs). But then again, if one of ‘The Lord of the Rings’ is on, I’ll watch that. Like I can’t even put it into the same category.”

Favorite musical artist: “I don’t have one. ... I listen to a lot of radio. ... I’m very, very heavily reliant on DJs.”

Part 2 of this comedy series’ first season drops Friday with 10 episodes, and sees failed semipro football player Colt (Ashton Kutcher) finally accepting his place at the ranch. But he and brother Rooster (Danny Masterson) will have to prove themselves to dad, Beau (Sam Elliott), if they’re to ever hope to become partners. Debra Winger and Elisha Cuthbert also star.

“The Closer With Keith Olbermann,” video. gq.com/new

For much of this election cycle, Keith Olbermann has been conspicuously silent. But that changes with the launch of this new twice-weekly series on the GQ website, in which the former MSNBC and ESPN broadcaster comments on all things election — as well as anything else that catches his eye.

“David,” www. youtube.com/ watch?viAOOO12KW60

Nathan Fielder (Comedy Central’s “Nathan for You”) stars in this five-episode comedy series about a man who tries to fill his life with meaning after being told he has five weeks to live. Dean FleischerCamp (“Marcel the Shell”) wrote and directed the series that co-stars his ex-wife Jenny Slate (“Saturday Night Live”).

“Russell Peters: Almost Famous,” www.netflix. com/title/80115464

The fearless comic returns to his hometown of Toronto for a sold-out performance in which he brings his observational style of humor to bear on two of his favorite subjects: family and race. And that likely would mean poking fun at stereotypes, another favorite target. Better watch out because, as he often says, “somebody gonna get hurt real bad.”

Best Bets

SUNDAY

1 p.m. on NBCSN

NASCAR Racing

Four of NASCAR’s sixteen drivers who qualified for the Chase for the Sprint Cup Championship will be eliminated today with the running of the Citizen Soldier 400 from Dover International Speedway in Delaware. Kyle Busch entered the Round of 16 at the head of the field and will attempt to hold off the likes of Matt Kenseth who won the AAA 400 Drive for Autism at Dover’s one-mile oval back in May.

6 p.m. on KTUL America’s Funniest Home Videos

Alfonso Ribeiro begins his second season of hosting the series — its 27th round overall — as a teen is sure that one of her dental nurses is Hillary Clinton. In other segments, a woman finds a unique way to cope with going into labor by dancing hip-hop, and a youngster fights fierce winds to try to return a garbage can to a neighbor. Another segment compiles footage of problems involving hoverboards ... which haven’t always been topics of humor.

8 p.m. on HBO Westworld

If you could be completely immersed in a fantasy in which you could do anything you wanted, would you learn things about yourself you might prefer not to know? That’s the question at the heart of this new drama inspired by a hit 1973 movie. Darker and sexier than that film, this series is set in an amusement park populated by lifelike characters with artificial intelligence. Moral ambiguities ensue. The huge cast is led by Anthony Hopkins, Evan Rachel Wood, James Marsden, Jeffrey Wright and Ed Harris.

9 p.m. on KOTV Elementary

After six years of inactivity, a serial bomber appears to be back in action, uniting Holmes (Jonny Lee Miller) and Watson (Lucy Liu) with New York police as the mystery series’ fifth season begins with “Folie a Deux.” They may get help from someone else from Holmes lore: Shinwell Johnson (played by new series regular Nelsan Ellis), featured in Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s

“The Adventure of the Illustrious Client.” Here, he’s an ex-criminal who literally owes his life to Watson.

9 p.m. on KTUL Quantico

The thrust of the new episode “Lipstick” will seem familiar to followers of this show, since the flashback sequences put a new group of CIA recruits through training exercises — with the ones here meant to thwart surveillance. The parts of the story that flash forward make it a challenge to locate terrorists, since trust is at a premium, even among agents. Alex and Ryan (Priyanka Chopra, Jake McLaughlin) try to settle into their new relationship.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH The Voice

The initial phase of the show’s season continues with this fifth edition of “The Blind Auditions,” as singing hopefuls try out for coaches and judges Miley Cyrus, Alicia Keys, Adam Levine and Blake Shelton. Those who make the initial cut have other stages to go through — and to perform on — with only one ultimately succeeding last season’s winner, Alisan Porter. A “Best of the Blind Auditions” compilation episode is scheduled for Tuesday.

8 p.m. on KOTV Scorpion

Though romantic threads were left hanging, the members of Team Scorpion have only so much time to deal with them as the adventuredrama’s third season opens with a two-hour tale, “Civil War/More Civil War.” Their main concern is stopping the hackers commandeering American military vessels in the air and at sea — and turning the weaponry on U.S. cities. Guest stars include Max Gail (“Barney Miller”) and Spencer Grammer. Elyes Gabel and Katharine McPhee star.

9 p.m. on KJRH Timeless

Time travel is going to be a big series theme this season, demonstrated in part by this new fantasydrama from executive producers Eric Kripke (“Supernatural”) and Shawn Ryan (“The Shield”). After a villain (Goran Visnjic) steals a literal time machine to alter history, a specially selected trio (Abigail Spencer, Matt Lanter, Malcolm Barrett) is sent back in time after him — in this debut, to 1937 and the New Jersey setting of the Hindenburg disaster.

TUESDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Jake and Holt (Andy Samberg, Andre Braugher) get help in their crusade against Figgis (guest star Eric Roberts) in the new episode “Coral Palms Part 3,” as their comrades from New York come to Florida to help them. Though the situation puts Jake and Amy (Melissa Fumero) together again, it’s less than comfortable. Sheriff Reynolds (guest star Jim O’Heir, “Parks and Recreation”) gets in the cops’ way

again. Ken Marino also continues his guest role.

7 p.m. on KQCW

The Flash

Everything has changed for Barry (Grant Gustin) — based on the trip he made to alter his past — as the adventure series starts its third season with “Flashpoint.” His parents are alive, he’s courting Iris (Candice Patton), and Central City has a different hero in the persona of Kid Flash (Keiynan Lonsdale). However, Reverse Flash (guest star Matt Letscher) warns Barry that continuing to live that revised life will have big repercussions for all concerned.

7:30 p.m. on KOKI

New Girl

Jess (Zooey Deschanel) brings other singles along when she’s invited on a couples excursion by Schmidt and Cece (Max Greenfield, Hannah Simone) and Winston and Aly (Lamorne Morris, guest star Nasim Pedrad) in the new episode “Single and Sufficient.” After receiving no criticism from Schmidt on the beginning of his novel, Nick (Jake Johnson) has a hard time continuing to write it. Curtis Armstrong (“Moonlighting”) guest stars.

8 p.m. on KJRH KOKI KOTV KTUL KOED

Vice Presidential Debate

Over the history of political debates, some of the most memorable lines have come out of the showdowns between the candidates for secondin-command (think Sen. Lloyd Bentsen and Adm. James Stockdale). Tim Kaine (D) and Mike Pence (R) could add to that legacy as they meet at Longwood University in Farmville, Va. CBS News’ Elaine Quijano will be the moderator leading the questioning in the event, to be televised by multiple broadcast and cable networks.

9 p.m. on FX Atlanta

In addition to starring in and cowriting “Value,” series creator Donald Glover also directed this new episode, which deals with the thin and often-blurred line between love and hate. Plot specifics are few, but the usually laid-back Vanessa (Zazie Beetz) is definitely battling some feelings of jealousy as events unfold. Brian Tyree Henry and Keith Stanfield also star.

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on KQCW Arrow

Oliver (Stephen Amell) is on his own as the defender of Star City in the adventure’s Season 5 premiere, “Legacy.” Diggle and Thea (David Ramsey, Willa Holland) have left the team after Laurel’s death, and Felicity (Emily Bett Rickards) tries to steer Oliver through a solo crusade of dealing with both villains and vigilantes. A particularly lethal criminal (guest star Chad L. Coleman) forces the initially resistant Oliver to form a new Team Arrow.

8 p.m. on KQCW Frequency

Revising the same-named 2000 movie, this new drama series reconnects a present-day police detective (Peyton List) and her late father, a cop (Riley Smith) killed on the job. The means for their reunion: Dad’s ham radio, which lets them communicate across 20 years ... and also gives the daughter the chance to change her family’s fate, though doing so could have unfortunate side effects. Co-stars include Mekhi Phifer (“ER”) and Anthony Ruivivar (“Third Watch”).

9 p.m. on KTUL Designated Survivor

“20/20” co-anchor Elizabeth Vargas plays herself in the new episode “The Confession,” arriving at the White House at a sensitive time ... though she’s not supposed to know it. Security at the site has been breached, and President Kirkman (Kiefer Sutherland) works to keep that information from becoming news as he prepares for a television interview with Vargas. The ongoing probe of the bombing leads Hannah (Maggie Q) to come up with her own hunches.

THURSDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH Superstore

Jonah’s (Ben Feldman) unhappiness about having to work in Cloud 9’s gun section manifests itself in his choosiness in selling firearms in the new episode “Guns, Pills and Birds.” The result is a gathering of protesters in the store. Glenn (Mark McKinney) also aims to make a personal stand on professional turf as he tries to purchase the store’s entire stock of “morning-after” pills, only to find himself short of funds to do so. Lauren Ash also stars.

7:25 p.m. on KOTV NFL Football

Two NFC West teams meet tonight when quarterback Carson Palmer and the Arizona Cardinals head north to the Bay City to take on running back Carlos Hyde and the San Francisco 49ers. Hyde has been getting his carries under coach Chip Kelly’s scheme in ’Frisco. Arizona, meanwhile will counter with one of the league’s best defenses and a talent-laden offense that includes veteran Larry Fitzgerald; a threat any time he’s on the field.

9 p.m. on KTUL

How to Get Away With Murder

Though Annalise’s (Viola Davis) “Keating 5” students generally will play along with anything she proposes, even they have issues with the homicide case she gives them to handle in the new episode “Always Bet Black.” Laurel (Karla Souza) is surprised not only by what she discovers, but by the means by which she does so, involving someone unexpected. Billy Brown, Alfred Enoch, Jack Falahee, Aja Naomi King and Matt McGorry also star.

9 p.m. on HIST Ice Road Truckers

The decidedly unorthodox Season 10 of this hit series draws to a close with the season finale “The Final Ride,” which finds the four-truck convoy confronted with an ice crossing so thin they have to get out of their vehicles and manually test its surface themselves. In addition to other challenges, Art Burke’s engine dies, forcing him to travel back to Winnipeg with Alex Debogorski over a trail that winds up destroying the latter’s truck.

FRIDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI

Hell’s Kitchen

Ostrich certainly is not a typical cooking ingredient, but the remaining chefs have to use it — and not in just one dish, but eight — in the new episode “The Yolks on Them.”

And that’s not all: They have to open giant ostrich eggs to gather as much as they can to fulfill the recipes. Winning the challenge will be worth it for that team’s members, since they’ll get to go zip-lining in Big Bear Lake, Calif. Chef Gordon Ramsay is the host with high expectations.

8:01 p.m. on KOKI

The Exorcist

A friend’s death keeps Kat (Brianne Howey) unnerved in the new episode “Chapter Three: Let ’Em In.”

The memorial service could make her even more so, given the rather unsuitable dress Casey (Hannah Kasulka) intends to wear to it. Marcus and Tomas (Ben Daniels, Alfonso Herrera) seek higher authority to approve the exorcism they want to perform. Geena Davis and Alan Ruck also star. es.

9 p.m. on KOTV Blue Bloods

Though she doesn’t want to press charges, a former hostage (guest star Danielle Savre, “Too Close to Home”) becomes the cause of Danny and Baez’s (Donnie Wahlberg, Marisa Ramirez) efforts in the new episode “The Price of Justice.” A financial supporter of the New York City Police Department has a traffic incident, creating problems for Frank (Tom Selleck). Jamie (Will Estes) gets a new job prospect after helping with the making of a television show.

9 p.m. on MAX Quarry

Like its Cinemax series predecessor “Banshee,” this adaptation of books by Max Allan Collins (“The Road to Perdition”) hasn’t exactly softpedaled the violence so far during its first season, but even so, some fans may be a bit shaken by the new episode “Coffee Blues,” which sees Memphis being rocked by an unspeakable act of racial violence. Logan Marshall-Green, Jodi Balfour, Damon Herriman, Peter Mullan and Nikki Amuka-Bird star.

SATURDAY

8 p.m. on SYFY Movie: Day of Reckoning

In this new horror thriller, 15 years after demonic beings nearly wiped out mankind in a bloody “day of reckoning,” a lunar eclipse prompts new hordes to rise from under the Earth’s surface and try to finish their grisly job. It falls to a single plucky family to find a way to seal the breach while managing not to be killed themselves. Raymond J. Barry (“Justified”), Barbara Crampton (“The Young and the Restless”), Heather McComb (“Ray Donovan”) and Jackson Hurst (“Drop Dead Diva”) star.

9 p.m. on TLC

Suddenly Rich

What happens when an average person suddenly experiences a major yet totally unexpected financial windfall? Regardless of whether it comes from lottery winnings, gambling, the discovery of rare antiques in the attic or an unexpected inheritance, does this lucky break change the recipient, or does it reveal his or her real nature? Those are among the questions explored in this new unscripted series, which, according to a casting call, features “likable, ordinary people.”

Late Night with Seth Meyers

RNC Chairman Reince Priebus spoke out against Hillary Clinton’s attack on Donald Trump’s supporters and said, “Clinton’s comments show outright contempt for ordinary people.” Then again, so does the name Reince Priebus. Hillary Clinton left the Ground Zero memorial service early yesterday because she felt overheated. Said Trump, “Hey, if anyone’s too hot it’s my daughter Ivanka.”

The Tonight Show

Starring Jimmy Fallon

Hillary Clinton had to walk back a comment she made about Trump supporters last week. So, if you’re keeping track, Trump supporters are deplorable, and Hillary supporters are deportable. Hillary was just diagnosed with pneumonia. And to everyone’s surprise, Trump has refused to attack her while she’s sick and even said that he hopes she feels better. At which point, people started asking Trump if he was feeling OK.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Some disturbing news out of North Korea, they conducted a nuclear test detonating a 10-kiloton device underground. You think it’s hard

being a North Korean? Imagine being a North Korean prairie dog. North Korea may soon have the technology to nuke countries other than their own because last month they tested a submarine-based missile called the “No Dong.” The missile flew 300 miles before falling into the Sea of Japan. Man! The dolphins around Japan just cannot catch a break.

The Late Late Show With James Corden

This weekend Hillary Clinton called half of Trump supporters a basket of deplorables. A basket of deplorables is not only an insult, but it’s also the top-selling item at KFC.

While in New York Hillary became overheated and had to leave an event to receive medical attention. It turns out that she had been diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday. I mean this was a scary moment for Donald Trump because he was thinking, “Oh God, I might actually have to be the president.”

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Last night North Korea conducted what they claim was a successful test of their biggest nuclear warhead yet. So congrats to them. I’m glad they’re finally figuring that out. Will someone please tell Kim Jong Un they like his new glasses and he looks like he lost weight so he doesn’t kill everybody on the West Coast?

Conan O’Brien

Donald Trump said he wishes Hillary Clinton a speedy recovery from her pneumonia. He said, “Get well soon, you shrill, lying crook.” Chipotle is testing deliveries by drone. A spokesman for Chipotle said, “If our food is going to come flying out of you, it might as well fly into you.”
