When it comes to actors known for on-screen car chases, Burt Reynolds has a secure place on the list, and “Smokey and the Bandit” is a major reason why Sundance presents the 1977 comedy hit — directed by Reynolds crony and former stuntman Hal Needham — Saturday, Jan. 13, featuring the star as a fast-driving troubleshooter hired to transport a cargo of beer illegally across state lines.

While his partner (Jerr y Reed, who also supplies some of the music here) hauls the physical stash in a large truck, the Bandit (Reynolds) scouts for trouble en route and that actually finds him, in the form of a r unaway bride (an amusing, engaging Sally Field) whose would-be father-in-law (Jackie Gleason, playing it broadly and hilariously) is a “Smokey” or lawman who’s determined to catch the wily Bandit. As they say, good luck with that.

Instead, creators laid much of the focus on the toll anger, resentment and physical trauma can take on a human being as they interact with the oft-cruel world around them. At the end of the day, Freeland noted, “Echo” is “ an exploration of trauma — how we deal with it, how we cope with it, how it affects us, how we affect it, how it affects those around us. ”

“The Tom and Jerry Show” (MeTV, Saturday, Jan. 13): Saturday-morning TV has changed a lot over the years, but it’s good to see that this literal cat-andmouse game still has a weekly place. The animated characters were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera before they left MGM and set up their own company that generated such shows as “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons.”

Tastemaker trials: Food Network stars battle in winner-takes-all competition

Chef Darnell Ferguson hosts “Superchef Grudge Match”

As Food Network describes: the food world is filled with bold, brash chefs with egos as big as their resumes, so it is only natural that when chefs collide, beef can turn into bad blood. Darnell invites two pairings of chefs who have some kind of food feud to bring their knives and bury the hatchet once and for all. In the end, the two Grudge Match victors walk out with a $10,000 cash prize, a prized knife from the losing chef ’s knife roll and bragging rights for life!”

Throughout this second season, Ferguson has invited some highly talented Food Network alumni to take part in his challenge, with upcoming episodes seeing the likes of Jay Ducote (“Food Network Star”), Joe Sasto (“The
