Bur t Reynolds is back behind the wheel as the ‘Bandit’ classic corner

Bur t Reynolds and Sally Field in “Smokey and the Bandit”

When it comes to actors known for on-screen car chases, Burt Reynolds has a secure place on the list, and “Smokey and the Bandit” is a major reason why Sundance presents the 1977 comedy hit — directed by Reynolds crony and former stuntman Hal Needham — Saturday, Jan. 13, featuring the star as a fast-driving troubleshooter hired to transport a cargo of beer illegally across state lines.

While his partner (Jerr y Reed, who also supplies some of the music here) hauls the physical stash in a large truck, the Bandit (Reynolds) scouts for trouble en route and that actually finds him, in the form of a r unaway bride (an amusing, engaging Sally Field) whose would-be father-in-law (Jackie Gleason, playing it broadly and hilariously) is a “Smokey” or lawman who’s determined to catch the wily Bandit. As they say, good luck with that.

el Cinematic Universe has become a massive blockbuster superhero genre have long been divided into camps — DC — but those seeking any form of visual entertainment, and television, would be hard-pressed to find a medium way to caped crusaders or leotard-clad superhumans. The Walt Disney Company purchased Marvel Entertainwhopping $4 billion), the company’s streamer, Disney+, greatest proponents of the “super” genre. Newest to join the “Hawkeye” spinoff series premiering Wednesday, Jan. 10, on

Marvel Universe, Echo is best known to current Marvel budding actress Alaqua Cox, who was born and raised in the ation in Keshena, Wisconsin, and is of the Menominee tarring alongside Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” 2008) ickinson”) in the 2021 miniseries “Hawkeye,” Echo was role and garnered plenty of attention for her two-fold fighting abilities. As is the case with nearly all superheroes cho’s backstory is somewhat complicated and varies sigbut at least three things remain consistent: her name, her deafness.

is the highly gifted daughter of secret mob enforcer WilcClarnon, “Dark Winds”) — sometimes referred to as William source material — a proud Native American man of the Latina mother, known vaguely as “Ms. Lopez,” who abanaya was young. Upon his untimely death related to crimihulking mobster Kingpin, a.k.a. Wilson Fisk (played in D’Onofrio of 1987’s “Full Metal Jacket”), to look after his young othing if not a man of his word, Fisk agrees — and so begins

the Disney+ series is Echo’s origin story and “revisits uthless behavior in New York City catches up with her in her her past, reconnect with her Native American roots and family and community if she ever hopes to move forward.” her hometown, her roots and her own morals and desires, what no longer serves her and embrace the feelings that have same dangerous path as Kingpin and the father she lost Along the way, however, there is plenty of violence, blood” (per Freeland) — hence the series’ TV-MA rating. ajo filmmaker Sydney Freeland (“Reservation Dogs”) and creative Catriona McKenzie (“Satellite Boy,” 2012) direct eeland and McKenzie were excited to begin work on a projdeaf Indigenous superhero in entertainment media. Beyond “Echo” also prominently features the hero’s prosthetic leg, original source material to provide added inclusivity and incorporate Alaqua’s own, real-life prosthetic into the storyline.

“Representation was extremely important to myself and to everyone on the crew,” Freeland stated at an October 2023 news conference.

But neither Alaqua’s amputee status nor the character’s deafness was front and center while plotting the show’s details. Sure, the creators gave thought to her disabilities and incorporated them into the storyline, but her so-called “disabilities” — as “Hawkeye” fans have clearly already noticed — are hardly disabling. Instead, creators laid much of the focus on the toll anger, resentment and physical trauma can take on a human being as they interact with the oft-cruel world around them. At the end of the day, Freeland noted, “Echo” is “ an exploration of trauma — how we deal with it, how we cope with it, how it affects us, how we affect it, how it affects those around us. ”

“Splash” (Hulu, streaming): Tom Hanks landed his first spot in movie stardom with this charming 1984 romantic comedy from director Ron Howard, with whom he has worked again several times since. The first film released under the Touchstone banner, it makes good use of Hanks’ ordinary-guy persona as his character falls in love with a woman who turns out to be a mermaid (Daryl Hannah). John Candy earns big laughs as Hanks’ brother and business partner, with Eugene Levy as a determined scientist who could be a spoiler

“The Gene Autry Show” (get TV, Sunday, Jan. 7, and Saturday, Jan. 13): The legendary “singing cowboy” – whose signature tune was “Back in the Saddle Again” – moved from radio and movies to television with this 1950s series, which now has a regular weekend-morning berth and features the star aboard his famous horse Champion. His steadiest sidekick was played by Pat Buttram, later known as Mr Haney on “Green Acres.”

“The Tom and Jerry Show” (MeTV, Saturday, Jan. 13): Saturday-morning TV has changed a lot over the years, but it’s good to see that this literal cat-andmouse game still has a weekly place. The animated characters were created by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera before they left MGM and set up their own company that generated such shows as “The Flintstones” and “The Jetsons.”

Tastemaker trials: Food Network stars battle in winner-takes-all competition

Chef Darnell Ferguson hosts “Superchef Grudge Match”

As Food Network describes: the food world is filled with bold, brash chefs with egos as big as their resumes, so it is only natural that when chefs collide, beef can turn into bad blood. Darnell invites two pairings of chefs who have some kind of food feud to bring their knives and bury the hatchet once and for all. In the end, the two Grudge Match victors walk out with a $10,000 cash prize, a prized knife from the losing chef ’s knife roll and bragging rights for life!”

Throughout this second season, Ferguson has invited some highly talented Food Network alumni to take part in his challenge, with upcoming episodes seeing the likes of Jay Ducote (“Food Network Star”), Joe Sasto (“The

favor of judges Eric Adjepong [“The Great Soul Food Cook-Off ”] and Stephanie Izard [“Top Chef ”],” Food Network shares. “In the first match, chef Nate Appleman [“The Next Iron Chef ”] takes on chef Amanda Freitag [“Chopped”] to show the world that he’s ready to join the elite corps of chefs who compete on ‘Tournament of Champions’. In the second match, there’s old beef to settle when chef Jonathon Sawyer [“Beat Bobby Flay”] challenges chef Chris Cosentino [“Food Interrupted”] for the title of America’s Meat Master.” Packed with talent and good taste, new episodes of “Superchef Grudge Match” air Tuesday, Jan. 9, on Food Network.

BEST PRIME TIME CARTOONS

“The Flintstones” (ABC, 1960-66): Fox’s “Grimsburg” joins the categor y when it premieres Sunday, Jan. 7, but this was the first animated series made specifically for evening television. The Hanna-Barbera classic succeeded largely because it offered something for ever yone, including the appealing animation of the prehistoric characters for youngsters, and the smart parallels drawn between past and modern times for adults.

“Jonny Quest” (ABC, 1964-65): Hanna-Barbera took a more realistic approach to adapting Doug Wildey’s comic about adventurous youngster Jonny (voice of Tim Matheson), his scientist father and their comrades in danger

“The Simpsons” (Fox, 1989-present): Animation hadn’t been a part of prime time for some time when Homer, Bart and the rest of Matt Groening’s Springfield-based characters — originally seen in short subjects on

“The Tracey Ullman Show” – were spun off into their own series that continues to run strong all these years later, often with big-name voice guests.

“The Critic” (ABC, 1994; Fox, 1995): The world of a movie reviewer (voice by Jon Lovitz) supplied the framework for this comedy, which frequently incorporated parodies of popular or famous films into the episodes.

“South Park” (Comedy Central, 1997-present): Kenny has sur vived countless killings to stay with one of television’s most proudly irreverent shows.

“Futurama” (Fox, 19992003): Wanting more from “Simpsons” mentor Groening, Fox commissioned this saga of a modern man defrosted in the future, where he worked for a courier ser vice. Two forthcoming seasons of the show have been ordered by Hulu.

“Drawn Together” (Comedy Central, 2004-07): Virtually ever y type of character was sent up hilariously, and with a decidedly adult bent, in this parody of both cartoons and reality shows.

“Bob’s Burgers” (Fox, 2011-present): A family-run restaurant, whose owners face constant personal and professional dilemmas, furnishes the basis for this Emmy-winning sitcom.
