It’s all in the ‘Fam’ for Nina Dobrev in new CBS sitcom
After her time on “ The Vampire Diaries,” Nina Dobrev has earned the chance to laugh and to get laughs.
The actress tries something new by doing comedy in front of a studio audience in “Fam,” which CBS premieres Thursday, Jan. 10. She plays Clem, whose vision of married life is clouded when her unpredictable half-sister (Odessa Adlon, a daughter of “Better Things” star Pamela Adlon) suddenly arrives to stay – forcing Clem to tr y to get her fiance (Tone Bell) and future in-laws (Sher yl Lee Ralph, Brian Stokes Mitchell) used to the newcomer and vice versa.
Dobrev allows that it took her a while to “ get into a groove” for sitcom work. “I had done theater at my performing-arts high school, so I knew what that was like,” she says, “but it had been so long since I was in front of a live audience that, more than anything, this was about the ner ves. The writers have an idea of what they want the character to be, but you have to discover it together It’s a very collaborative process. ”
As she adjusted to performing for spectators again, Dobrev was grateful to be with a sitcom alum in Bell (“Disjointed”) and stage veterans in Ralph (“Dreamgirls”) and Tony Award winner Mitchell (“Kiss Me, Kate”). “I will be the first to admit that I did need the guidance,” notes Dobrev “I viewed this
as a second college experience and hung onto every syllable they said. I definitely was a newbie.”
While she acknowledges that the public may not know her funnier side, Dobrev (whose birthday is the day before “Fam’s” launch) attests that “all my friends know that I will do anything for a laugh, in the most self-deprecating manner. It’s definitely something that I love, and I’m glad that I get to showcase it now. ”
Movies including “Flatliners” and “Dog Days” have been among Dobrev’s credits since her six seasons as Elena (and sometimes also as Katherine) on “ The Vampire Diaries.” She recalls that series with “positive, amazing memories. I remember having maybe a disagreement over a scene with Paul (Wesley) in Season 1, and he looked at me and said, ‘One day, 10 years from now, you’re gonna miss me.’ And now that the show is done, we’re probably closer to each other than anyone else (from the series).”
In prepping for “Fam,” Dobrev (who’s also in the upcoming film “ Then Came You”) visited “ The Big Bang Theor y” and “Mom” and spoke with executive producer Chuck Lorre. She says she’s eager to do more of her new show “now that I do have that taste of a live-audience feel, and that instant gratification of laughter in the moment. ”

As “The Bachelor” for the program’s 23rd edition, how has your journey been, for as much as you can say about it?
Coming of f (of taping) the show, it was so great to see my friends and family and spend time with them again. This is my third time around (after “The Bachelorette” and “Bachelor in Paradise”), so I had a little more of an idea of what it was going to be like coming of f of it. I’ve just been really enjoying my friends and family and my dogs.
What did those close to you say about your tackling the franchise for the third time?
You know, they were ver y suppor tive. I think they saw how good it was for me personally, and also, I think it was really unique for my parents to see this side of me. When I was growing up, they were always super-suppor tive of my athletic career, so for them to see me develop as a person was sor t of special and cool for them, I think.
My mom was really skeptical of me going on (“The Bachelorette”) in the first place, but I can say that she has grown to love and appreciate how all of this works.
Host Chris Harrison has said that your “Bachelor” season really shows how
“vulnerable” you are. Would you agree with that?
I would. Looking back on my time on “The Bachelorette,” and also on “Bachelor in Paradise,” you got to see me handle cer tain situations – but you didn’t ever really get to ever see me for me. You didn’t really get a good idea of my personality, who I am, where I’ve come from and what I’ve been through. Hopefully, people are going to be able to see all of me this season.

Mar y McCormack is ‘Alright’ as a series star again
Q: “In Plain Sight” was one of my favorite shows. was wondering what happened to Mar y McCormack. haven’t seen her in any other shows recently. – Steven Katzenmoyer, Fleetwood, Pa.
A: She and ABC probably won’t be happy to learn that. Since October, she’s been starring in the network’s 1970s-set sitcom “The Kids Are Alright,” playing a mom of eight sons. The show is based on the actual experiences of creator-producer Tim Doyle, and you’ll have many more chances to catch it in the coming weeks, since has given it a full-season order.
Incidentally, after “In Plain Sight,” McCormack also appeared on including “Welcome to the Family,” “The Newsroom,” “House of and “Falling Water.” Earlier this year, she played the older sister Grace on NBC’s “Will & Grace.”

A: He was. Harper was a regular cast member on “CSI: NY” for its entire nine-season run on CBS, playing Dr Sheldon Hawkes, whose exper tise in medical investigation made him invaluable to his colleagues (including those played by Gar y Sinise, Melina Kanakaredes and Sela Ward) as they relied on forensic evidence.
In-between those two shows, Harper was on CBS’ series spinof f of the Bradley Cooper movie “Limitless” for its single season, and he also had a guest arc on Showtime’s “Homeland” during its sixth year. Harper has become a noted author as well, his most recent of several books being “Letters to an Incarcerated Brother: Encouragement, Hope and Healing for Inmates and Their Loved Ones.”

Healthy recipes – They’re only a remote-click away on Food Network
OK, you’re a week into 2019 – how are your New Year’s resolutions doing?
If any of them have to do with dieting and weight loss and you haven’t yet gotten started, then Food Network has a few ideas for meals that can help you tip that balance scale in your bathroom (or doctor’s office) in your favor
The calorie-conscious cooking of “Healthy Weekend” gets going early the morning of Sunday, Jan. 6, with “Southern at Heart,” in which host Damaris Phillips shows how to make sesame tuna salad, miso-seared sweet potatoes and sauteed apples, dishes that are low in carbs and high in taste.
Next on “Farmhouse Rules,” Nancy Fuller whips up a get-up-and-go smoothie, a chicken and veggie soup with beef-bone broth and salmon with maple dijon glaze. Yum
Valerie Bertinelli offers up “Clean Eats” in an episode of “Valerie’s Kitchen,” walking viewers through the steps in making a grilled vegetable salad, a kale and artichoke chicken casserole and slow-cooker oats. Then in the episode titled “On the Road Again,” she creates food to keep her energy up for a quick business trip to Chicago
Conversely, Ree Drummond is home alone in the snow in Oklahoma, where she’s planning to exercise and eat low-carb That means a hike and a lettuce burger for dinner, followed the next day by a “carbbuster breakfast” of poached eggs and a lunch of butternut squash and kale stir-fry, topped off with an orange resolution smoothie. A meal that’s ideal for getting the metabolism going.
Later that morning on “Girl Meets Farm,” host Molly Yeh gets a visit from her sister-in-law, for

whom she prepares her favorite meal of hummus with meat all over it, homemade whole pita, pita salad with tahini dressing and for dessert, mint cupcakes with cream cheese frosting.
Immediately following on “Barefoot Contessa,” Ina Garten shows how to roast vegetables like a pro, starting with butternut squash hummus followed by a roasted vegetable paella and a roast potato fennel soup Then chef Yotam Ottolenghi gives the lowdown on roasted baby vegetables with sumac and yogurt. Low-cal fare that’s also interesting.
Then on “Trish’s Southern Kitchen,” Trisha Yearwood gets into the post-holiday spirit by trying out goat yoga, then heading to the kitchen to whip up baked green bean fries, garlicky shrimp in crispy tortilla cups and a goddess brown rice bowl. And for dessert, it’s a crustless apple pie with granola frozen yogurt.
