BY GEORGE DICKIE
L enny Belardo is the antithesis of everything we have come to expect in a pope.
Handsome, charming and very American, the 42-yearold New Yorker by way of a Midwest orphanage is a shrewd political operator with an acute sense of self-image, an appetite for power and a knack for determining who his enemies are. As the newly installed Pius XIII, he’s also in search of a God he can present to the masses – and to himself – in “The Young Pope,” a 10-episode limited series premiering Sunday, Jan. 15, on HBO.
“God is probably his closest friend, his confidante, his guide,” explains the British actor who plays Lenny, Oscar nominee Jude Law (“The Talented Mr. Ripley,” “Cold Mountain”). “Also, he has a complex relationship with him. I mean, here’s a guy who I think never had a family and so grew up feeling unloved. God became a sort of stand-in
parental role and so he has a direct dialogue with him and it’s his sort of be-all and end-all. Don’t mistake his doubts or his disbelief in rejection. It’s more about him wanting to sort of take (his faith) to another level, in my opinion.”
Lenny is also a guy who is determined to do things his way. That starts with his choice of his chief adviser, Sister Mary (Oscar winner Diane Keaton, “Annie Hall”), who raised him at the orphanage. Lenny ascended to the papacy thanks to the efforts of the Vatican secretary of state, Cardinal Voiello (Silvio Orlando, “The Caiman”), who mistakenly believed the new pontiff would follow his more liberal lead on policy and protocol. And he leapfrogged many older candidates, including his mentor, Cardinal Michael Spencer (Oscar nominee James Cromwell, “Babe”), who is very bitter and resentful toward Lenny about being passed over. The opening sequence gives a good idea of what to expect. As Pius XIII delivers

his first homily at St. Peter’s Square, the clouds part as he extols the virtues of birth control, gay marriage and women in the priesthood –hot-button Catholic issues all – to a roaring crowd and a shocked and befuddled Vatican conclave. Then he wakes up from his dream and we come to learn over the course of events that, well, he doesn’t really believe all that. Or does he?
“The dream sequence is sort of an opportunity to see his deepest fears,” Law explains. “It’s also a wonderful piece of (misdirection) by the writer and director in (that) people assume, ‘Oh, this is of course what this young pope is going to be like. He’s going to be liberal and he’s going to be revolutionary in breaking down all those barriers or rules of past Catholic guidelines and of course, it’s not. It’s the opposite.”
As Pius starts his reign, he assigns Sister Mary to shadow Voiello, whom he distrusts after the older man expressed dismay at the

Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) took a pretty dark turn in Season 6 of “Game of Thrones,” feeding her husband and rapist, Ramsay Bolton (Iwan Rheon), to his own dogs. She even smiled softly, listening to his scream of pain – definitely not the naive little girl we first met at Winterfell.
Since that impressive and slightly horrifying act, we’ve been more than a little worried that Sansa’s future will be darker and more violent than we’ve ever seen before. After all, everyone knows that the most powerful women in Westeros are ruthless when it comes to getting what they want.
Sophie Turner says the sexism inherent in the world Sansa lives in is only going to push her to be more power hungry in the future.
“When she saves the day and doesn’t get any recognition for it, it was like she had that first taste of power and then was immediately stripped of it,” Turner tells Vulture. “She was stripped of the respect that she really feels she deserves. She was trying to give her input to Jon and trying to be a collaborative leader, but it’s difficult when it’s a patriarchy and when there’s sexism.”
This wouldn’t be the first time “Game of Thrones” has been criticized for its patriarchal nature, but we’re intrigued that this particular display of sexism was a purposefully crafted plot that could (and probably will) end up pushing Sansa to seek
out more power for herself. If she wants to fight the patriarchy, she’s going to have to spill a little blood to do it.
We’re totally cool with Sansa getting her murder on – at this point we just roll with the gratuitous violence in “Game of Thrones” – but it’s also a little nerve-wracking to speculate about who she’ll need to grab that power from.
“It would be a real adjustment for Jon (Kit Harington) to listen to her and do what she says,” Turner explains. “So she was looking to Littlefinger (Aidan Gillen) like, oh, you’re right. Maybe that pretty picture you painted of me on the throne and you by my side isn’t such a bad one.”
Unfortunately, teaming up with Littlefinger is never a smart idea, especially if he’s going to push her to betray Jon. Westeros is running low on Starks, there’s no way we can afford to lose one to infighting! Jon was awarded the victory for winning Winterfell (after neglecting to let the insightful Sansa join his war room discussions), so we can see how Sansa might hold some resentment for her brother. The love and trust between them seems fairly unshakeable at this point – but in Westeros you never truly know who’s willing to betray whom at any given moment.
“Game of Thrones” is set to return in the summer of 2017.
pope’s conservative agenda. He also tells Vatican marketing director Sofia Dubois (Cecile De France, “Hereafter”) that his goal as pope is to be invisible, reasoning that many important figures in world history kept low profiles and thus were mysterious. So for him, that means lights low during public appearances, no photos and no Pius XIII images on Vatican merchandise.
He puffs away on a cigarette as he explains this. While it’s hard to envision someone as holy as the pope partaking in such a ruinous habit, there is a purpose for it being there beyond simply showing that these people who aspire to do God’s work are indeed human.
“It is also kind of a layer of (defense to) keep people back,” Law says. “It’s a sort of prop for him to hide behind.”
And so begins the reign of Pius XIII – mysterious and contradictory with some smoke and mirrors.

After the onslaught of heavy foods wrought by the holidays, viewers can come back to Earth with common sense kitchen tips and other useful culinary information in a series returning to Food Network this week.
In “Kitchen Sink,” which returns Sunday, Jan. 15, co-hosts Tregaye Fraser, Spike Mendelsohn and Fanny Slater offer up a second season of food trends, Internetinspired recipes, kitchen hacks, cooking shortcuts and other tips designed to educate and entertain. The cohosts also head out of the studio and onto the street to check out various eateries and the new trends they are inspiring.
Fraser, a Cordon Bleu-trained chef based in Atlanta, comes to the show after winning the 12th season of “Food Network Star.” Her passions are fusion cuisine, thinking outside-the-box and fun – all of which she promises to bring to the show.
“I’m the fun police,” the 32-year-old Fraser says. “When I come in here, we’ve got to have fun at all times. And just really taking people’s minds to another level about foods and mixing and matching ingredients that people may think don’t necessarily go together. So I think I’m going to be here to make people believe that you can try anything and it’ll be great.”
Such as?
“Well, I do these deviled eggs and I put fried chicken on top,” she says with a laugh. “I also do a ham and cheddar chicken waffle sandwich, so it’s like a ham-andcheddar waffle with fried chicken as the meat.”
Being a wife and mother, she’s also a fan of kitchen organization and a current trend toward making dishes using only five ingredients.
“You know, a lot of people think that’s not possible but when they watch the show they’ll see how it’s possible,” she says. “People think you need a million ingredients. You really don’t.”

What book are you currently reading?
“Actually I’m reading a book called ‘David and Goliath’ by Malcolm Gladwell. It’s about underdogs and battling giants. You know, it’s me entering this new world and it helps you think better. You know, you may doubt yourself and it helps you with it.”
What did you have for dinner last night?
“I actually had salmon, spinach and some mixed vegetables. I’m doing the whole seafood and veggie thing and I’m trying to stay away from rice. It’s the hardest thing ever but I’m trying to do it (laughs). ... I’ve been doing good so far so we’ll see how it goes.”
What is your next project?
“Besides the ‘Kitchen Sink,’ I’m trying to work on my junior chef summer camp. We’ve been working on that all year, so I’m hoping by summer we can have a location for my junior chefs. We can go and cook every day and go to farms and learn and have fun. ... I love it. Kids are the future and I love when a kid is really into it and they really want to do it and you don’t even have to push them. It’s effortless.”
When was your last vacation, where and why?
“It was last year for my birthday, I went to Puerto Rico and it was so fun. They know how to party over there. (laughs) ... Swam with the fish. It was great.”

“It means so much, because it comes from the people!”
Numerous variations on that winner-spoken sentiment are standard elements of the annual People’s Choice Awards, typically the first award show of any calendar year. It still arrives relatively early, though it will be a couple of weeks later than usual when CBS televises the event from Los Angeles’ Microsoft Theater L.A. Live on Wednesday, Jan. 18. Mark Burnett – whose own “The Voice” is up for favorite competition TV show – will serve as the ceremony’s executive producer for the eighth consecutive time, with Joel McHale (“The Great Indoors,” “Community”) as the host.

If the People’s Choice Awards, now in Year 42, seem like more of a popularity contest than other shows of its type ... well, it is, as proven simply by the way the nominees are determined. Box-office grosses factor in for movies, ratings for television programs, music sales for artists, and so forth. In a real way, then, the public is voting every time it consumes a piece of entertainment, though more direct voting also is conducted via the People’s Choice Web site and Facebook page. (For this year, that solicitation ended in mid-December.)
Among the interesting statistics of the latest People’s Choice Awards: “Captain America: Civil War” tops the movie contenders with seven nominations; with five chances, “Grey’s Anatomy” is the TV nominee in front; Ellen DeGeneres will become the top winner over the event’s history with one more win (and she has three opportunities to do that); and comedian Kevin Hart is this year’s mostnominated talent with five bids.
Where TV is concerned, some shows may get their sole awards hurrah from the People’s Choice crowd since they’ve already had their original first-season orders not extended – which would seem to translate into “cancellation,” though that exact word hasn’t been used. All sharing that boat, ABC’s “Conviction” and “Notorious,” CBS’ “Pure Genius” and The CW’s “Frequency” and “No Tomorrow” are among the People’s Choice nominees for favorite new TV drama.
Also of interest, some of the movie titles being mentioned as strong contenders for industry honors during the award season are absent from the People’s Choice contests. Slots that might have gone to “La La Land,” “Moonlight” and “Manchester by the Sea” are filled instead by “Me Before You,” “Central Intelligence” and the female-driven remake of “Ghostbusters,” indicating what popular taste dictates as opposed to within-the-profession choice.
Given that, it’s unlikely that the outcome of the People’s Choice Awards will have much of an impact on the film accolades still to be handed out in the coming weeks leading up to late February’s Academy Awards. And that’s perfectly fine, since the People’s Choice ceremony has its own purpose, particularly in following the reviewer-selected Critics’ Choice Awards and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association-staged Golden Globe Awards as it does this time.
The People’s Choice Awards is an occasion for the people, as determined by the people ... and the winners undoubtedly will be happy to note that again, and to thank those people, as they take the stage.

Norah O’Donnell of “CBS This Morning”
“I record ‘CBS This Morning,’ the evening news, ‘60 Minutes’ and then actually we record movies for the kids to watch.
So I know that’s pretty boring. I don’t get to watch that much television. We watch a lot of movies for the show because we do so many books on the show and we do so many actors, actresses and directors that I end up watching a lot.
... You know, I’ve done the ‘Breaking Bad,’ ‘Downton Abbey.’ I love ‘Game of Thrones.’ I love ‘Billions’ on Showtime. But I’ve actually been so busy with books lately that I haven’t been a good Netflix person.”

Inspired by “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” a “Race Through New York Starring Jimmy Fallon” ride will be introduced this spring at the Universal Orlando resort. How does it feel to be a theme-park attraction?
Can you believe this? I just rode it for the first time. They wanted me to be the first person to ride the ride, and it is unbelievable – even if I wasn’t involved. You basically get to go to show and have the best tour of New York City during a four-minute ride.

It’s a simulation, but it’s state-of-the-art. Industrial Light and Magic made it look so realistic-looking. (During filming,) I was in a makeshift wooden go-kart with dots and ping-pong balls all over my face and just doing acting, and what these guys made out of it, they’re geniuses.
What exactly is the ride like?
You start in my studio, then you break through the wall into the street and start going through Times Square. You stop at a pizzeria, and you smell pizza; you go to the East River and you get wet. And you go to the Statue of Liberty and see fireworks. It’s gorgeous.
The Roots (Fallon’s “Tonight Show” house band) are in it, too, and there’s original music by them. It’s so fun, you’re going to be smiling ear-to-ear when you take this ride.
You hosted this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Did you approach that in much the way you approach “The Tonight Show”?
Yeah. The job of the host is just, “Don’t waste my time.” Let’s make it fun, keep it moving, keep it going and make it a fun party. If you’re hosting a party, you have to make sure there’s good music, good food, good people ... make everyone in the room happy.
Arnold Schwarzenegger of “The New Celebrity Apprentice” on NBC
“I watch mostly, I would say, news programs. I mean, ‘Narcos’ is, for instance, a show that I watch, the first season, all 10 of the shows. ‘Game of Thrones’ or something like that. But I would say I don’t spend a lot of time in front of the TV because I’m just too busy during the day. ... And then usually it’s always news channels or documentaries. Or if there’s really an interesting show, now you have the ability that ... you can actually go and download it and watch it at your convenience.”
Neil Patrick Harris of “A Series of Unfortunate Events” on Netflix
“I tend to watch ‘Survivor’ and ‘Big Brother’ and ‘Chopped’ and ‘America’s Got Talent’ because who doesn’t love a good variety act? And any of the live musicals because I’m always hoping someone falls or a light drops, something goes terribly wrong, and I’m just waiting for that to happen. Not hopeful that it happens but that’s why you record them. But streamingwise, I watch ‘Stranger Things,’ watching ‘Westworld,’ ‘Sens8.’ David (Burtka, his husband) watches ‘Transparent,’ ‘Black Mirror,’ ‘Loving.’ So a little bit on the darker content there. Oh, we watched ‘The Night Of’ with John Turturro. That was really very cool.”

Queen Latifah of “Star” on Fox
“I watch too much TV, so it’s all over the board ... anything from shows on PBS to court shows. I think ‘Saturday Night Live’ is what I have to watch the most. Especially coming off an election season, I always look forward to what ‘SNL’ is going to do.”

6:00 p.m. (ESPN2) 2017 Australian Open Tennis First Round. Å
The Australian Open begins Sunday, Jan. 15 on ESPN2 and in the women’s singles bracket tennis fans may finally be turning their attention to someone who doesn’t have Williams for a last name. Germany’s Angelique Kerber, the 2016 Australian Open champion, entered 2017 with the WTA’s top women’s singles ranking. As 2016 wore on, her stock continued to rise as that of Serena Williams continued downward. Now it’s time for the first Grand Slam event of the year from Melbourne Park, where it has been held since 1988.
Kerber no doubt earned her top ranking throughout 2016. After losing in the finals at the Brisbane International to start the year, she bounced back later that month and defeated Serena Williams in Sydney at the Australian Open, her first Grand Slam victory, after entering the tournament as a seventh seed. She won another title in front of her fellow countrymen (and women) in April at the WTA Tour Porsche Tennis Grand Prix in Stuttgart, Germany. After a disappointing first round loss to Kiki Bertens at the French Open she bounced back, but still came up short to Williams in the women’s final at Wimbledon.
Kerber played in Summer Olympics at Rio de Janeiro where she earned a silver medal after bowing to Puerto Rico’s Monica Puig, but promptly responded less than a month later with another Grand Slam title at the U.S. Open. Overall she won three titles in 2016 and finished as the runner up in five others, including the Rio Olympics.

Despite the results of the recent election, America still could get a female chief executive soon ... at least according to “Scandal.”
On Thursday, Jan. 19, the popular ABC drama series begins its sixth season – which was delayed to accommodate star Kerry Washington’s pregnancy with her son, born in October – and it’s Election Night when the new stories begin. Sen. Mellie Grant (Bellamy Young), estranged wife of the White House’s current occupant (Tony Goldwyn), and Gov. Francisco Vargas (Ricardo Chavira) are the rivals to inherit the Oval Office. The outcome is anyone’s guess, as is typical in ShondaLand, the company name Young joins many others in using to reference the work of executive producer Shonda Rhimes (who wrote the season premiere).
“Our writers have been so inspired by all the madness that was our real election cycle in America,” the pleasant actress says, “so to come back on (the show’s) Election Night, that first episode is explosive. When you have that high an expectation, especially in ShondaLand, it’s like buckshot. It kind of goes everywhere.
“Mellie has waited her whole life for this moment,” notes Young, “and those junctures in life are tricky. They’re never going to turn out the way you’ve envisioned them in your mind, and certainly never in ShondaLand. While it was really delicious for all of us to come back together as a cast and really find out something on (the series’) Election Night, it was also really difficult and confusing. It sets us all on a crazy trajectory for a really rocky Season 6.”
The new “Scandal” season encompasses the show’s 100th episode, and while Young praises the show’s “incredible writers across the board,” she also acknowledges the particular texture of a script done by Rhimes.
“Because she wrote so many of the episodes at the beginning, everybody’s brain just feels different when you’re saying those lines. You can tell whose rhythms and semantics and grammar it is. You can feel the DNA beyond the plot and the behavior. You really feel the bones of it, so it’s always very relaxing when we know we’re in the hands of the maker.”

Giovanni Ribisi (“Avatar,” “That Thing You Do!”) stars as a con artist who gets out of prison only to find himself hunted by the vicious gangster (Bryan Cranston, “Breaking Bad,” “All the Way”) he once ripped off. Determined to make the most of whatever time he has left, he goes on an Alaskan expedition, creates a foundation to help other ALS patients, repairs his relationship with his father and embraces technologies that will help compensate for his deteriorating abilities.
“Neal Brennan: 3 Mics,” www.netflix.com
Director, writer and comedian Neal Brennan does some outside-the-box thinking with this new comedy special, which finds him standing at three separate microphones: one for traditional stand-up comedy, a second for one-liners and a third for short confessional monologues. Topics range from managing depression to his difficult relationship with his father. Fresh off a successful Broadway run, the show is produced by John Legend.
“Mavens,” www.redbull.com/us/en/music/ stories/1331828715296/ afropunk-founder-jocelyncooper-mavens Strong and effective women are in the spotlight in this new web series from Red Bull. The three episodes tell the inspirational stories of music industry pioneer Jocelyn Cooper, Tom Tom Magazine founder Mindy Abovitz and street artist Magda Love. 6 p.m. on KOED
Sherlock on Masterpiece
“The Final Problem” is the title of the last of the new mysteries that comprise the drama’s relatively brief Season 4. It’s also the name of an actual Sir Arthur Conan Doyle story, but some of its elements were used earlier in this series — so it’s anyone’s guess as to whether this means the end of Holmes and Dr. Watson (Benedict Cumberbatch, Martin Freeman), at least as far as this incarnation of their adventures is concerned.
8 p.m. on KOED
Victoria on Masterpiece Jenna Coleman (“Doctor Who”) portrays the young Queen Victoria in this new drama, which begins with the episode “Doll 123.” New to the monarchy, Victoria quickly proves she’s not to be trifled with, though others are eager to sway her to their bidding. Her familiarity with Lord Melbourne (Rufus Sewell), the prime minister, sets off parliamentary problems. Tom Hughes plays Prince Albert in the series, written by best-selling novelist Daisy Goodwin.
8 p.m. on HBO
The Young Pope
This new 10-part limited drama series — which airs a new episode each Sunday and Monday over the next five weeks — stars Jude Law as the former Lenny Belardo, now better known as Pius XIII since becoming the first American-born pope in history. Tonight’s premiere chronicles how the charismatic pontiff reached the papal throne in the Vatican as an old friend, Sister Mary (Diane Keaton), arrives in Rome to serve as his chief advisor. James Cromwell, Silvio Orlando and Marcello Romolo also star.
8 p.m. on SHOW Homeland
After traveling to various political hot spots in previous outings, Season 6 of this Emmy-winning thriller moves to New York for its setting as the focus narrows to examine homegrown terrorism: attacks by what showrunner Alex Gansa calls “doit-yourself, self-radicalized individuals.” In the season premiere, Carrie (Claire Danes) and daughter Franny (Claire and McKenna Keane) return
from abroad, and Dar and Saul (F. Murray Abraham, Mandy Patinkin) debrief the president-elect (Elizabeth Marvel).
MONDAY
7 p.m. on KOKI Gotham
Seeking vengeance for Mario’s shooting, Falcone (guest star John Doman) orders a contract against Gordon (Ben McKenzie) in the new episode “Mad City: Ghosts.” Meanwhile, Gordon and Bullock (Donal Logue) learn of a bizarre plan involving Jerome (guest star Cameron Monaghan). Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) panics before an interview about his politics. Selina’s (Camren Bicondova) mother, Maria Kyle (guest star Ivana Milicevic, “Banshee”), comes back to Gotham.
7 p.m. on FREE Shadowhunters
Already cut off from his friends and allies at the Institute, Jace (Dominic Sherwood) finds his odds of survival diminishing in a new episode called “Parabatai Lost,” as he becomes a target for the New York wolf pack, who believes that he is a killer. Elsewhere, Raphael (David Castro) pressures Simon (Alberto Rosende) to find Camille (Kaitlyn Leeb).
8 p.m. on DISC Fast N’ Loud Motor Masterminds Richard Rawlings and Aaron Kaufman, along with the Gas Monkey Garage crew, return with new episodes as Richard and Aaron come across a rare 1955 Chevy. The Barrett-Jackson Northeast auction is fast approaching, putting the pressure on the team to transform this beater into a restored classic. If they can pull it off, though, there’s a big payday in store for them.
9 p.m. on KOED Independent Lens
Though a museum may possess items that once belonged to an Indian reservation, who actually owns them currently? The question is posed by director Mat Hames’ documentary “What Was Ours,” which follows a journalist’s efforts to locate and reclaim artifacts that used to be found on Wyoming’s Wind River Indian Reservation, but ended up on display at the Field Museum in Chicago. A church diocese also became involved in channeling and tracking the sought objects.
TUESDAY
7 p.m. on KOKI New Girl
Jess (Zooey Deschanel) is on a couple of searches in the new episode “Cece’s Boys.” While trying to select a new vice principal — and finding herself hesitant to choose — she and Reagan (guest star Megan Fox) are asked by Cece (Hannah Simone) to help find models. Nick, Schmidt and Winston (Jake Johnson, Max Greenfield, Lamorne Morris) take a spa day together.
7:30 p.m. on KTUL American Housewife
Katie (Katy Mixon) decides to turn the tables on Oliver (Daniel DiMaggio) in the new episode “Surprise.” He tells her and Greg (Diedrich Bader) that their comparatively quaint house is mortifying for him, so he doesn’t want a birthday party — which prompts Katy to invite his rich friends to precisely such a gathering at the Otto home.
8 p.m. on KOED Frontline
With a new administration about to enter the White House, the new two-part episode “Divided States of America” — concluding Wednesday — examines events of the past eight years that may have fostered the results of the recent election. The opening half focuses on President Barack Obama’s promises of change and unity in the United States, and how those played out during his two terms against the actual racial and social climate in the country.
9 p.m. on FX Taboo
The new “Episode 2” finds James Delaney (Tom Hardy) fully focused on putting together an alliance that qualifies as his personal league of the damned, but those plans may be blown out of the water by the arrival of someone unexpected. Jonathan Pryce also stars.
9 p.m. on TVLAND Teachers
In the Season 2 premiere, “First Day Back,” the teachers reluctantly return to work after summer break, whereupon Ms. Snap (Katy Colloton) is horrified to discover she’s been given what is generally considered to be the worst group of kids in the entire school. Mrs. Adler (Kathryn Renee Thomas), meanwhile, is assigned to a mobile classroom and, on a more personal note, Ms. Watson (Kate Lambert) signs up for an elite online dating service. Caitlin Barlow, Cate Freedman and Katie O’Brien also are featured.
7 p.m. on KJRH Blindspot
Roman (Luke Mitchell) could end up with a dangerous undercover mission when a tattoo indicates he’s the likely candidate in the new episode “Devil Never Even Lived.” The assignment would have him infiltrating a biker gang — at potential peril

to his health and even his survival. Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton, Rob Brown, Audrey Esparza, Ashley Johnson, Ukweli Roach, Michelle Hurd and Archie Panjabi also star.
8 p.m. on KOTV People’s Choice Awards 2017 The annual event — in which the public votes for favorites in movies, television, music and digital media from the past year — is broadcast from the Microsoft Theater L.A. Live, with Joel McHale (“The Great Indoors”) serving as host. Topping the motion-picture nominees is “Captain America: Civil War” with seven bids, while “Grey’s Anatomy” leads TV contenders with five nominations. Up for three awards here, Ellen DeGeneres would set a record with one win.
8 p.m. on KOED Frontline
In the conclusion of the new twopart episode “Divided States of America,” social, racial and political factors that played into the 2016 presidential election are surveyed. As the program’s title suggests, the word “division” largely defined the situation — including the splits within the Republican Party as Donald Trump and other candidates vied for the nomination. The state of America as it’s inherited by the President-elect is considered.
9:01 p.m. on HIST SIX
The members of U.S. Navy Seal Team Six go on a mission to eliminate a Taliban leader in Afghanistan, but things start to go awry with the discovery that an American citizen is working with the terrorists. Barry Sloane (“Revenge”), Kyle Schmid (“Copper”), Edwin Hodge (“Chicago Fire”) and Walton Goggins (“Justified”) appear in this limited drama series, penned by William Broyles (“Apollo 13”) and military special operations veteran David Broyles.
7 p.m. on KJRH The Good Place
An hour-long presentation combines two new episodes starting with “Mindy St. Clair,” in which Michael (Ted Danson) tackles his most challenging situation yet. Chidi (William Jackson Harper) and Tahani (Jameela Jamil) lend assistance to him. 7 p.m. on KTUL Grey’s Anatomy
Lest there be any question of this medical drama’s continuing popularity, it’s the most-nominated television program in this year’s fanchosen People’s Choice Awards. It resumes its 13th season with the new episode “You Can Look (But You d Better Not Touch),” taking Bailey, Arizona and Jo (Chandra

Wilson, Jessica Capshaw, Camilla Luddington) to a maximum-security prison for women to treat a pregnant, violence-prone teen. Caterina Scorsone also stars.
8:01 p.m. on KTUL Scandal
Delayed to accommodate series star Kerry Washington’s recent pregnancy, the drama’s sixth season begins on Election Night with “Survival of the Fittest.” The stakes are high for many people — including Sen. 9 p.m. on FX Baskets
Zach Galifianakis’ darkly dysfunctional family sitcom may be one of the oddest comedies on television, yet it has enough charm and heart to have earned an Emmy for veteran actor and comic Louie Anderson (as the mother, no less, of Galifianakis’s character). As a new season begins tonight with the new episode “Freaks,” an FX press release advises only that Chip (Galifianakis) is forced to decide between a tarp and some snacks. We have no idea what that means.
7 p.m. on KJRH Grimm
Series star David Giuntoli directs for the first time with the new episode “Oh Captain My Captain,” as his character Nick comes up with a potentially dangerous scheme to thwart a rise to greater power by Capt. Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Chad Smith hosts.

Things are likely to get lively tonight, then, as Maher returns with a new season on the same date his frequent adversary is sworn in as president of the United States.

Rudy Giuliani said this morning that even though Donald Trump passed him over for a position in his administration, Trump hasn’t forgotten about him. Said Trump, “It’s true. How could I ever forget Rudy Garziola? Gorgonzola, whatever. I’ll never forget my good friend Judy.”
Bill O’Reilly said last night that liberals want to eliminate the Electoral College because they want power taken away from the white establishment. Bill, you don’t have to say, “White establishment.” It’s redundant. That’s like saying ATM machine. The “M” means machine.
Donald Trump loves Christmas. It’s the one time of year where he can say, “Those are real, those are fake,” and claim he was talking about Christmas trees.
Trump confirmed yesterday that he met with Mexican businessman Carlos slim recently. And I guess it went well, ‘cause he later tweeted in all caps, “HE IS A GREAT GUY.”

Yesterday the president-elect met with Bill Gates, Jim Brown, and Kanye West. Today he met with executives from Amazon, Tesla, Apple, Google, and Facebook. He gathered all the major tech execs for a very important role: He wanted to see if any of them could figure out his iTunes login.
The CEO of Twitter, Jack Dorsey, did not meet with Donald Trump, I’m guessing for the same reason Dr. Frankenstein never went out of his way to meet the monster.

Today, Queen Elizabeth stepped down as the patron of children’s charities. The queen said, “I just realized I really hate kids.”
Donald Trump said he’s a fan of Jesus because “I like guys who inherit their dad’s business and then think they’re God.”
