Week of January 1 - 7, 2017

Adria Arjona stars in “Emerald City,” premiering Friday on NBC.

NBC reimagines Oz with epic ‘Emerald City’

W ith sweeping European vistas, impressive special effects and dark and brooding characters, NBC’s “Emerald City” makes clear early on that this new fantasy/drama series is not your father’s “The Wizard of Oz.” Nor are you in Kansas anymore.

Premiering Friday, Jan. 6, the hourlong series, a reimagining of L. Frank Baum’s original 1900 novel, stars Adria Arjona (“True Detective,” “Narcos”) as Dorothy Gale, a young Kansas nurse who with K9 police dog Toto is swept by tornado into a fantastical land of competing realms, deadly warriors, dark magic and a bloody battle for supremacy.

It’s ruled over by the Wizard (a heavily bearded, nearly unrecognizable Vincent D’Onofrio, “Law & Order: Criminal Intent,” “Jurassic World”), a guileful monarch who has outlawed magic, antagonized a growing cauldron of witches and is faced with disaster

at the hands of a mythical force. He’s a fraud trying to maintain his tenuous hold on his kingdom.

And Dorothy’s dropping into this land seemingly from the sky certainly qualifies as magic in the eyes of its denizens, thus immediately making her an outlaw. As she fights to survive in this hostile realm, she discovers her own strength and empowerment, a plot point that the actress playing her, Arjona, found attractive.

“I felt responsible for certain aspects of the script,” Arjona explains, “that Dorothy’s a very insecure and settling character and just becomes this empowered woman toward the end. And I think that journey to me was a lot more important to showcase to little girls that you can embody yourself, you can be a strong woman.”

“I went on this journey with her,” she continues. “... (This role) was my first baby, it was my first lead in

a TV show and obviously you start out a little bit scared, you start out a little bit nervous. You’re kind of unsure what is right and what is wrong and that’s the point where Dorothy kind of starts the show. And then toward the end, the crew becomes your family. The director becomes almost like your dad, your co-stars become your brothers and sisters, and you feel so much more comfortable and so much more empowered that it kind of feeds into the character itself. So at the end of the show, I felt a lot more secure of myself. I felt a little more like Dorothy, like the actual real Dorothy. I felt strong.”

Conversely, D’Onofrio – who was drawn to the project by the opportunity to work with director Tarsem Singh (“The Fall”) and a talented cast including Joely Richardson (“The Patriot”), Florence Kasumba (“Captain America: Civil War”), Oliver Jackson-Cohen (“The Raven”) and Ana Ularu

(“Inferno”) – loved the idea of playing someone whose motives are not what they seem to be.

“I just took the whole idea of the original where he’s just a fake, the man

behind a curtain,” he says, “and we just used that as a metaphor and we dove deep into the psychology of that and how, if we were going to examine that, how far would we go? Like, who is he to begin with? Who

is he in the regular world and who does he pretend to be in Oz? ... He almost becomes the king there in a way. And who does he have to be to get that far? And so we just developed him like that.”

SAM HEUGHAN WILL GET HIS AWARDS SHOW LOVE, ‘OUTLANDER’ FANS

For “Outlander” fans, the Starz time-travel drama has not received nearly enough awards show recognition.

The Emmys have only nominated it for technical awards – costumes, music and production design. While those noms are definitely deserved, fans continue to be frustrated with the lack of nominations for the actors and the show itself.

The Golden Globes have been better, nominating Tobias Menzies for supporting actor and the show for best drama series in Season 1, and star Caitriona Balfe for best actress in both seasons.

But co-lead Sam Heughan still has not been nominated by either major awards show and the Heughligans are restless. Fortunately, we think his best work is yet to come in Season 3. Across the television landscape, it can be hard for even the top shows to receive acting recognition for more than one or two stars, simply because there is so much excellent TV airing right now. Heughan’s work, while wonderful, has been a bit overshadowed by the flashier material his co-stars have to work with.

For Menzies, Season 1 was going to be his juiciest season by far, because Black Jack Randall is all over the book as a complicated, dastardly villain – the kind of stuff made for a

supporting actor nomination. Likewise, Balfe definitely shoulders the lion’s share of the drama in the first two seasons, as the books are very much Claire’s story.

But in “Voyager,” the third “Outlander” novel, Jamie is on his own for 20 years after surviving the Battle of Culloden – and Heughan should be able to sink his teeth into some very meaty material in those episodes.

From the aftermath of the Culloden defeat, to the cave, to his relationships with Laoghaire (Nell Hudson) and Geneva (Hannah James), to William (whose identity we won’t spoil here in case you aren’t a book reader), Jamie is put through the wringer without Claire. And while her life without him is not all sunshine and rainbows, it’s not the same as what he’s going through.

Furthermore, those 20 years are only the first half of the book, so there’s also the sea voyage and Jamaica to look forward to. We’re eagerly anticipating that Season 3 will really let Heughan shine – and perhaps in a year’s time, he’ll be issuing a statement about how excited he is to be nominated for his first Golden Globe.

“Outlander” returns in 2017 on Starz.

Joely Richardson, Vincent D’Onofrio, Florence Kasumba and Ana Ularu (from left) star in “Emerald City,” premiering Friday on NBC.

Teen baker hits it big with YouTube’s ‘Kawaii Sweet World’

Everyone has to start somewhere. With Rachel Fong, it was with an Easy-Bake Oven.

Yes, the 17-year-old recent high-school graduate from Piedmont, Calif., and host of the YouTube baking channel “Kawaii Sweet World,” developed her baking skills by way of those Hasbro toy ovens with a light bulb for a baking element.

“It was just kind of a throwback to my childhood,” she explains, “and I think a lot of people connected with that because they had Easy-Bake Ovens, too. And then from there, I started getting into actual baking videos and that’s where I’m at now.”

“Kawaii Sweet World,” which debuted in December 2010 with the first of its video tutorials for making kawaii (the Japanese word for “cute”) desserts, has gained big traction on YouTube, garnering millions of views and more than 880,000 subscribers. A quick look through the channel reveals an imaginative mix of confections ranging from a giant hot chocolate mug cake and emoji macaroons to Hello Kitty cookies and Disney Tsum Tsum cake pops.

She discovered her love of baking thanks to her mother, but when she didn’t care for the desserts they were making for Dad, she began baking on her own with her toy oven. That eventually led into video production, a detour into craft videos and then the advent of “Kawaii Sweet World.”

Her skills – both video and baking – are self-taught and the recipes she prepares are her own. She shoots all her videos from the studio she created in her parents’ basement.

After taking a gap year, she’ll be off to Stanford University next fall to study possibly economics or political science, though she’s not quite sure which yet. She’s certainly gratified by the success of “Kawaii Sweet World” and wouldn’t mind continuing it into adulthood but she wants to explore what else is out there for her.

Meantime, she’s grateful what it has given her.

“It definitely validated all my hard work ...,” she says, “because I had had my channel for so long and then the baking videos really helped my channel take off. So it was definitely a great feeling because I was really shy in school, too, and then also it kind of validated me as a person because my channel really gave me a voice even while I was still really shy. So that was definitely a great feeling.”

As Julie Andrews maintains what has become her New Year’s Day tradition, she’ll be in familiar company.

The widely beloved Oscar, Emmy and Grammy winner returns to Austria for her eighth stint as host of PBS’ annual “Great Performances” offering “From Vienna: The New Year’s Celebration” Sunday, Jan. 1 (check local listings). That city’s Philharmonic again will perform Strauss-family works in the opulent Musikverein, and Andrews will take in some of the local sights as usual, but there’s a reason she says the occasion will “feel just a little extra-special” for her this time.

“I’m on the board of the Los Angeles Philharmonic,” the ever-gracious actress explains, “and our brilliant maestro, Gustavo Dudamel, is the maestro for this particular concert. He’s worked with the Vienna Philharmonic before, and it’s lovely that we’re coming together on it.”

Dudamel also will leave the concert hall to make the rounds of Vienna with Andrews, and she’s not surprised that he’ll be joining her out and about.

“Every single place he travels, he manages to fit in a master class or visit the equivalent (education) system,” she reports. “He was raised in Venezuela, which has a great teaching institute for children, and he has started one in Los Angeles. He’s going to be doing some of that wonderful work at (Vienna’s) Superar, and I’ll be talking about it, so it’s very good serendipity all around. It makes this very special, because he is a glorious guy in every way.”

With Vienna State Ballet soloists also featured, Andrews has anticipation about several other guests in the program, the internationally famous Royal Lipizzaner Stallions. She’ll tour their Imperial Stables, “and that might have been a request from me,” she muses. “They had filmed them once before when Walter Cronkite was the (concert’s) host, and I just said, ‘Oh, couldn’t we go back there?’ And it’s behind the scenes, and they’re such great stables and such beautiful animals.”

Coming off a 2016 that brought her huge success as the director of an Australian staging of “My Fair Lady,” one of the musicals that cemented her own stardom, Andrews – also seen in ABC’s recent telecasts of her screen classics “Mary Poppins” and “The Sound of Music” – soon will appear in the Netflix series “Julie’s Greenroom,” an introduction to the performing arts for preschoolers. For any and all other activities, though, she still treasures her New Year’s Day date that typically concludes with Johann Strauss’ spirited “Radetzky March.”

“It’s a tribute to Vienna, a tribute to the music and a tribute to the Strauss family,” she reasons, “and it’s a gift that PBS gives us all for New Year’s Day. And they’ve been doing it for 33 years. That’s a long time to guarantee great, quality music and pretty, lovely pictures. It’s sort of a picture postcard, really.”

Mark Steines of “Home & Family” and The 128th Tournament of Roses Parade on Hallmark Channel

“ ‘Dateline (NBC),’ ‘Dateline (NBC),’ ‘Dateline (NBC).’ I cannot get enough of that show. I love how they solve these crimes, and how they can come in immediately and just by looking at a victim, they can take so much information away. And how many times is it the wife or the husband?

‘The Big Bang Theory’ is the next one, and we really loved ‘Vinyl’ when it was on. And ‘Stranger Things’ was amazing. I couldn’t stop watching it.”

Russell Hornsby

OF “GRIMM” ON NBC

Is there a wistfulness that comes with the knowledge that “Grimm” is ending after this season?

No. You know, I’m so busy that I haven’t even had time to think about it. You know, there’s 10 different things going on at once and because of that, I have to just focus on what’s tomorrow versus looking back at yesterday. So for an actor, it’s a good place to be. ... No time to get nostalgic.

Has shooting this season is different from the others?

Oh yeah. First of all, it’s only a half a season, which is great, and there was finality. So you could properly, I guess, prepare yourself for the end – emotionally prepare yourself and sort of do your goodbyes over time. And normally as actors, we don’t know the job is ending. It just ends and you don’t get asked back. Then you see people like three years later, “Oh man, I missed you. I’m sorry we didn’t get to say goodbye.” So this is different.

What has the reaction been from fans at the conventions you’ve been to?

It’s very sweet. I think that they appreciate that they have been informed that it’s over versus pulling the plug and then we not come back. So I think everyone appreciates that. It’s always better to know. And also, there had been like small Twitter “Save Grimm” campaigns that are cute but we know that the show’s not ending because it’s not doing well; it’s ending because the storytelling is over. Which I think is the best way to go – on your terms.

Kaitlin Olson of “The Mick” on Fox and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia” on FXX

“I am not a comedy watcher, for some reason. After we put our kids to bed, we have about an hour, so we’ll watch a ‘30 for 30’ ... or when ‘Game of Thrones’ is on, we get extremely excited. We don’t use the DVR for that; that’s an every-Sunday- night thing. And ‘Westworld’ was very exciting recently.”

Julie Andrews of “Great Performances: From Vienna – The New Year’s Celebration” on PBS

“What I watch mostly are all the great shows that come from PBS ... all the drama series, like ‘Indian Summers’ and ‘Poldark.’ Those are the kinds of things I love to watch when I have a moment to myself at the end of the day.”

Rita Moreno of “One Day at a Time” on Netflix

“I am absolutely crazy for ‘This Is Us.’ It’s so unique, so original. In fact, I recently made a deal out of it; I brought Chinese food to my daughter’s house and we watched ‘This Is Us.’ I just love it! And I enjoy ‘Madam Secretary’ a lot.”

If it’s Julie Andrews in Vienna, it must be New Year’s Day

Trace McSorley has Penn State seeing roses

Although the Rose Bowl is not part of this season’s College Football Playoff, it is still considered the “Granddaddy of Them All” with its own parade and fanfare. When it airs Monday on ESPN it will feature a classic Big Ten/Pac-12 matchup in the form of the Penn State Nittany Lions and the University of Southern California (USC) Trojans.

Penn State’s return to prominence is one of the big stories of the 2016-17 college football season and they’ve done it on the arm of quarterback Trace McSorley. The Nittany Lions had an amazing season, particularly the second half which saw them vault from an unranked team to place among the Top 5; coming up short for CFP after McSorley led them to a Big Ten championship.

A redshirt sophomore, McSorley won the starting job after the departure of Christian Hackenberg. He played respectably in a 24-17 loss to Georgia in last season’s TaxSlayer Bowl; nearly bringing Penn State back after a Hackenberg injury. As this season went on, he continued to develop, and the Lions entered the Top 25 after an upset win in October over No. 2 Ohio State. With that victory the stage was set for Penn State to partially control their own destiny. They ran the table down the stretch with McSorley putting up big numbers at times, including a comeback win over Wisconsin in the Big Ten Championship game, earning them that No. 5 ranking entering the Rose Bowl. Only the Trojans stand in their way of possibly climbing higher in the final rankings of the season.

Abbie Mills’ (Nicole Beharie) death at the end of last season on “Sleepy Hollow” means a new co-lead for Tom Mison and a new partner for Ichabod Crane as the Fox supernatural drama returns for its fourth season Friday, Jan. 6.

She’s Janina Gavankar, a 36-year-old Chicago-area native and veteran of such otherworldly series as “True Blood,” “The Vampire Diaries” and “Arrow,” who takes on the role of Diana Thomas, a Homeland Security special agent, single mom and former military officer who will team with the 18th-century sleuth to take down the forces of evil as the series shifts to a new city, Washington, D.C.

“She’s a very modern, independent lady and a mother,” Gavankar explains, “and her priorities are, number one, keeping the world safe for her daughter. I think they see things very differently. He has a little bit more panache in the way that he handles things. She likes to just nip the problem in the bud fast. So there are a few times that they butt heads trying to pick the best way to remedy a problem.”

This isn’t the first time Gavankar has been the newcomer on an existing series, having come on board “True Blood” and “The L Word” in their fourth seasons as well. This season, much of the “Sleepy Hollow” cast is new, with a different location and setting and several new characters. And she’s happy to report the production team has been adept at rallying around the newcomers.

“I’ve been through both versions of that,” she says, “and the groups that rally around you are the ones that have sustainable shows. And actually this year, Lyndie (Greenwood) and Tom are the only two actors that are returning, so it’s a bunch of new people. It’s five new regulars and Tom and Lyndie. So they have ushered us in with such open arms, I’m incredibly grateful for that.”

7 p.m. on KOKI

The Mick

The new year begins with a new comedy, as Kaitlin Olson (“It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia”) headlines this “Pilot” as free spirit Mickey — who assumes much more responsibility than usual by overseeing her arrested sister’s three spoiled children. Their attitudes of entitlement get nowhere fast with Mickey, as those familiar with Olson’s “Philadelphia” image may suspect. Normally to be seen on Tuesdays, the show also stars Sofia Black-D’Elia.

7:30 p.m. on KOTV

Ransom

Normally to be seen Saturdays, this new, fact-inspired drama series from “The Man in the High Castle” and “The X-Files” alum Frank Spotnitz premieres with “The Return.” Luke Roberts (“Black Sails”) plays Eric Beaumont, a globally known crisis expert enlisted to help solve tough, ransom-based kidnapping cases. Sarah Greene (“Penny Dreadful”), Brandon Jay McLaren and Nazneen Contractor (“24”) also star as his associates.

8 p.m. on KOED Sherlock on Masterpiece Fans of Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman as sleuth Holmes and Dr. Watson can rejoice, since the new year begins with a new — if brief — Season 4 of their take on the detectives. The first of the new mysteries, “The Six Thatchers,” refers to former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher ... whose image is being targeted by someone with a possibly larger purpose. Rupert Graves also returns to the cast, and Lindsay Duncan guest stars.

It wouldn’t be a new year if it didn’t begin with someone going through the television ritual of seeking true love from a field of numerous candidates for his heart. Many, if not all, of them start with a sense of who he is already — since Nick Viall was let go by Andi Dorfman on “The Bachelorette.” As this show begins its 21st season, he’s now the one sitting in the driver’s seat and handing out the roses. Chris Harrison returns as the host, of course.

The series’ 31st season opens with “By Sidney Lumet,” a profile of the late, esteemed director of such movies as “Network,” “The Verdict,” “The Pawnbroker” and “12 Angry Men.” The commentary is supplied by Lumet himself, reflecting on progressing from being a young actor to directing live 1950s television and then film in a 2008 interview utilized heavily here. Afterward, Treat Williams recalls working with Lumet on “Prince of the City.”’ 8:01 p.m. on KOKI Bones

The mystery series begins its 12th and last season — in which all the subtitles apparently will include “The Final Chapter” — with “The Hope in the Horns,” which finds the abducted Brennan (Emily Deschanel) in the clutches of her ex-assistant Zack Addy (guest star Eric Millegan). Of course, Booth (David Boreanaz) and the other members of the Jeffersonian team try to find and retrieve her. Sara Rue and Tim Guinee also guest star. Michaela Conlin also stars.

Late Night with Seth Meyers

Donald Trump was named Time magazine’s 2016 Person of the Year this morning. While Hillary Clinton was named runner-up. And when she heard, Hillary hiked so far into the woods, she’s now living with Bran Stark.

Donald Trump is reportedly considering arriving at his inauguration by helicopter, and so is Chris Christie. “Take me with you! I can’t go back to New Jersey!”

The Tonight Show

Starring Jimmy Fallon

On the “Today” show this morning, Time magazine announced that Donald Trump is the Person of the Year. Then Al Roker said, “Now let’s check out the protests happening in YOUR neck of the woods!”

Starbucks is planning to open Italian bakeries in New York City and Chicago that will serve pizza. Good, because if there’s anywhere

you can’t get a good slice of pizza, it’s NEW YORK CITY AND CHICAGO.

The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

Check one’s calendar because right now we are 43 days from the inauguration, and Donald Trump continues to fill out his Cabinet.

Watching Trump pick these people is like watching your Nana get a sponge bath — you know it has to be done, but it’s upsetting.

The Late Late Show With James Corden

The editors of Time magazine voted to make Donald Trump Person of the Year, although to be fair, 2.7 million more editors voted for Hillary Clinton, but the editors from Florida get more votes than editors from Rhode Island. It’s complicated.

Jimmy Kimmel Live

Time magazine has named their Person of the Year. It’s none other than President-elect Donald Trump. He is the Person of the Year. Which is a big deal because this might be one of our last years.

Trump won in spite of losing in Time’s online poll to Hillary Clinton. Can she win anything? Really, Hillary’s now just hoping to win a mug that says “World’s Best Grandma.”

Conan O’Brien

Pope Francis has warned the media to stop spreading false information. Or as the media reported it, “World’s Top Rabbi Says ‘Keep Up the Good Work!”’

Donald Trump said he has asked President Obama to help recommend some of his appointments. Obama said fine, and recommended Hillary Clinton for president.

Chris Christie
