Original fantasy-adventure series
‘Renegade Nell’ premieres
fun — honestly classic corner
BY JAY BOBBIN
‘True Lies’ is still action-packed
A decade after Arnold Schwarzenegger and director James Cameron first had big success together with “The Terminator,” they reunited for what became another massive hit with “True Lies,” the 1994 comedy-adventure that marks its 30th anniversary with an FX showing Thursday, March 28. Schwarzenegger plays a software salesman … or at least, that’s what his wife and daughter (Jamie Lee Curtis, Eliza Dushku) believe. He’s actually a highly skilled secret agent who’s on the trail of terrorists; in turn, they’re also after him.
Complications eventually bring his spouse into the spy game along with him, and the premise was used again in a CBS series that had a relatively brief run last year. The film’s stunts are fabulous, particularly one toward the end that pivotally involves Florida’s Seven Mile Bridge; Tom Arnold, Bill Paxton, Tia Carrere, Art Malik and (in one of his last prominent on-screen roles) Charlton Heston also are in the entertaining cast.
One exceptional young woman drives polite society mad on her journey to fulfill an unexpected destiny in “Renegade Nell,” an original historical adventure series premiering Friday, March 29, on Disney+. All eight episodes of the family-friendly fantasy series drop on the streamer on premiere day.
Nell Jackson, portrayed by “Derry Girls” star Louisa Harland, is a clever, brave woman who makes a name for herself as a highwaywoman in 18th-century England after she is framed for murder. Petty theft on the road keeps Nell afloat until she discovers she is destined for something beyond her wildest imagination. When powers enchant Nell, they make her even more of a force than she was on her own.
A magical spirit appears to Nell in the form of Billy Blind (Nick Mohammed, “Ted Lasso”) to help her on her adventures — a sort of Tinker Bell-type fairy sidekick. Nell’s abilities to evade capture and survive on her own get her into as much trouble as they keep her out of. With seemingly everyone after her for one reason or another, Nell thrives as an outlaw possessed by magical powers that make her stronger, faster and more capable than ever before.
Also starring in “Renegade Nell” are Frank Dillane (“Fear the Walking Dead”) as Nell’s difficult, fair-weather friend, Charles Devereux; Adrian Lester (“The Undeclared War”) as the well-connected Earl of Poynton; Alice Kremelberg (“The Sinner”) as power-hungry Sofia Wilmot; and Joely Richardson (“The Sandman”) as oddball newspaper magnate Lady Eularia Moggerhanger. Rounding out the cast are Pip Torrens (“The Crown”) as Lord Blancheford, Jake Dunn (“Big Boys”) as Thomas Blancheford, Enyi Okoronkwo (“The Lazarus Project”) as Rasselas and Craig Parkinson (“Line of Duty”) as Nell’s father, Sam. Newcomers Bo Bragason and Florence Keen star as Nell’s younger sisters, Roxy and George.
Sofia, a widow motivated by a need for power and independence, is the architect of a scheme to bring down Nell. Aiding Sofia in her plot is the Earl, an influential political figure with the connections she needs to get the job done. Unfortunately for the pair of strategists, Nell more than lives up to the talk going around town.
In an official trailer for the series, excited gossips speak of Nell, saying, “she’s unnatural,” and “she is formidable,” before Nell herself warns a foe, “you don’t want to mess with me.” Nell literally has the fighting spirit, as Sofia points out in the trailer, saying, “she fights as though she’s possessed.” Something comes over the titular renegade in these battles; whether it’s a firefight or hand-tohand combat, a dark glow reaches her eyes and Nell cannot be bested.
Nell is joined on her adventure by her two sisters, as well as Rasselas. Inspired by the chance to chase his own freedom, Rasselas leaves his life as a stable boy behind to help Nell, Roxy and George on their journeys. The troupe, with Billy Blind in tow, earns quite a reputation all across the country while on the run. As Lady Eularia claims in the series trailer, “if you haven’t heard of Nell Jackson, then you’re the only person in England who hasn’t.”
Known for crafting satisfyingly complex adult dramas such as “Last Tango in Halifax” and “Gentleman Jack,” “Renegade Nell” is a bit of a departure for series creator Sally Wainwright, who is also the BAFTA Award-winning series creator of small-town British crime drama “Happy Valley.” In an appearance on “The Graham Norton Show” this February, Lester shared that the new series “is really good fun. It’s very different for Sally Wainwright. She’s put political intrigue, sprites, magic, lots of fighting, highway robbery and Regency England in a big pot, gave it a stir, and out came an amazing idea.” In further praise, Lester said, “It is really good writing and I have a really good time being bad.”
more retro rewinds
“The Dick Van Dyke Show” (MeTV, Sunday, March 24): It might not seem like such a big deal now, but in the early 1960s, the topic of the birds and the bees was very sensitive subject matter for television … particularly in a comedy. Written by series creator-producer Carl Reiner, the related episode “Where Did I Come From?” shows how brilliantly this series handled such issues, with Rob and Laura (Dick Van Dyke, Mary Tyler Moore) trying to explain to their curious young son Ritchie (Larry Mathews) how he came to be.
“Prizzi’s Honor” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, March 30): Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner play professional assassins who target each other, despite their love affair, in director John Huston’s 1985 comedy-drama based on Richard Condon’s novel – and presented as half of a Nicholson double feature. Under her father’s guidance, co-star Anjelica Huston won an Oscar as the Nicholson character’s ex-flame; Robert Loggia, CCH Pounder and (in his screen debut) Stanley Tucci also appear.

“Sugar” - Season 1 (Apple TV+ — April 5, Series Premiere)
Colin Farrell stars as John Sugar, an American private investigator on the heels of the mysterious disappearance of the beloved granddaughter of a legendary Hollywood producer. The city never sleeps, but neither does Manhattan court judge Abby Stone (Melissa Rauch). Daughter of the late, great Harry Stone (Harry Anderson), she does her best to continue her father’s legacy, running the courtroom with an iron fist (and a wooden gavel), leaving Dan (John Larroquette), Gurgs (Lauretta) and Olivia (India de Beaufort) to question if Abby will ever find order. The Season 2 finale of “Night Court” debuts Tuesday, March 26, on NBC, with episodes available to stream online, at nbc.com/ night-court/episodes

Deceptive desserts: Bakers bend reality in new season of ‘Is
Following rave reviews and nonstop attention online, the surreal hit baking competition “Is It Cake?” returns with a fresh batch of episodes, as its third season — affectionately dubbed “Is It Cak3?” — debuts Friday, March 29, on Netflix.
In a preview for the season, host Mikey Day (“Saturday Night Live”) says: “Season 3 is stacked. There will be thrills, spills and mind-blowing cakes. ... And finally, I may get the answer to the most important question of our time: Is it cake?”
Viewers should prepare for “bigger cakes, higher stakes and even wilder bakes,” according to Netflix, as “contestants attempt to fool a new lineup of guest judges with hyper-realistic cakes resembling everyday objects” while a massive prize of over $100,000 hangs on the line.
As the competition grows bigger and the desserts more confoundingly spectacular, “Is It Cake?” has expanded to welcome contestants from across both the U.S. and Canada, with this year’s fateful eight consisting of: Kristen Eagles (Woodstock, Ontario); Grace Pak (New York City); Raina Washington (Richmond, Virginia); Timmy Norman (Johnson City, Tennessee); Jujhar Mann (Surrey, British Columbia); Henderson Gonzalez (Orlando, Florida); Julie McAllister (Charleston, South Carolina) and Caitlin Taylor (Bowie, Maryland).
Each week, the bakers must utilize their oddly specific skills to create “illusion cakes” within a tight timeframe, given a theme or object they must replicate in the process. Once completed, the cakes are then presented to a panel of celebrity judges, who face a challenge of their own: with 20 seconds on the clock, they must determine which item in a line of nearly-identical objects (ranging from handbags to

hats to hamburgers) is actually cake, and which is its “real-deal” counterpart.
The pressure is on for everyone — including Season 3 celebrity guests, such as Lauren Lapkus (“Good Girls”), Oscar Nunez (“The Office”), Danielle Pinnock (“Ghosts”), Lana Condor (“To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before,” 2018) and Chris Kattan (“A Night at the Roxbury,” 1998), among others — as those who fail to trick the panel will face elimination from the game, losing their shot at winning this “dupe dessert” showdown.
From fictional monsters to real-life heroes to creatures of the sea, see what the bakers mimic next in all-new episodes of “Is It Cake?” available to stream Friday, March 29, on Netflix.

BEST INGRID BERGMAN MOVIES
“Intermezzo” (1939): Bergman made her Hollywood debut by re-creating one of her earlier Swedish roles as a pianist who shares a forbidden romance with a famed violinist (Leslie Howard). This version is included in a Turner Classic Movies double-feature salute to Bergman on Sunday, March 24.
“Casablanca” (1942): Well, of course. Bergman has one of the all-time legendary roles — and will “always have Paris” — in this Oscar winner as Ilsa, club owner Rick’s (Humphrey Bogart) former flame who needs his help in getting herself and her husband (Paul Henreid) out of the war-torn title location.
“Gaslight” (1944): The George Cukor-directed melodrama with a title that helped inspire a phrase still used today — for the act of plotting to drive someone insane — features Bergman as the intended victim and Charles Boyer as her highly suspect husband.
“Notorious” (1946): Reteaming with Hitchcock, Bergman plays a novice government spy who becomes close to one of her investigation subjects (Cary Grant). This is the other half of TCM’s Bergman double bill on March 24.
“Joan of Arc” (1948): Bergman excels as the military leader who literally guides her army on faith.
“Anastasia” (1956): A superb Bergman plays the object of a scheme to bilk the Bank of England, by having her pose as a long-absent Russian royal.
“Indiscreet” (1958): Reunited with Cary Grant, Bergman plays an actress who falls for a banker even though he’s married.
“The Yellow Rolls-Royce” (1964): In one of three stories revolving around owners of the title vehicle, Bergman plays a socialite who becomes caught up in wartime upheaval in Yugoslavia.
“Murder on the Orient Express” (1974): Bergman won an Oscar as a missionary who may not be who she seems — which goes for virtually every character in director Sidney Lumet’s superbly elegant version of the Agatha Christie mystery.
