Reba McEntire had such a good time hosting “CMA Countr y Christmas” last year, she’s back to do it again – with some very famous friends along. Fellow countr y-music superstars Martina McBride and Brad Paisley are on the bill – as is the legendar y Tony Bennett – as ABC airs the special’s ninth annual edition Monday, Dec. 10. Recorded at Nashville’s Belmont University, the show also features Diana Krall (Bennett’s latest recording partner, on the Gershwin tribute album “Love Is Here to Stay”), Brett Eldredge, Amy Grant, Dan + Shay, Dustin Lynch, Old Dominion, Michael W.Smith, Lindsey Stirling, Brett Young and the Isaacs.
A recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors this month, McEntire says “it was a lot of fun” to return as “CMA Countr y Christmas” host. “We had wonderful artists come in and help us. I got to sing with the Isaacs, a family gospel group ... and I sing a song in the opening with a group of kids who are dancers. I was watching them more than I was paying attention to what I was doing!”
McEntire adds that she was “ so glad” to have McBride on board, calling her “a wonderful talent and a great friend.” And if popular-music icon Bennett seems a surprising choice for “CMA Countr y Christmas,” McEntire reports that

“ever ybody was totally in awe” of him: “ There was a standing ovation immediately when he walked out on stage. It was just a very warm experience for everybody – and when he performed, it was just like, ‘Wow! He still has it.”’
Bennett says that being on the special reminds him of when he “had doubts about doing a countr y song when (conductor/producer) Mitch Miller brought me ‘Cold Cold Heart’ back in 1951, and I said to Mitch, ‘ This is a countr y song, so I am not sure I am able to sing it.’ But Mitch was persuasive, and we recorded it more in the vein of a pop song, and it became a No 1 hit so of course, I had no qualms at all about singing on ‘CMA Countr y Christmas.”’
Noting that he performs in Nashville annually, Bennett is happy to be teamed with Krall on their current album, and also in many television appearances this season.
“Diana and I have known each other for more than 20 years now,” he reports. “We met at the Montreal Jazz Festival, and I was so impressed with her that I asked her to join my set and play piano when I sang ‘ They Can’t Take That Away From Me.’ We have done a few duet recordings, but it was the right time to get into the studio and record a full album together.”

“American Werewolf in London” is always identified as the grandfather of the horror-comedy genre but you didn’t intend that as a comedy, correct?
No, I don’t think of it as a comedy I hope it’s funny No, that’s a straight-ahead horror (film).
Those boys, we meet our leads in a truckload of sheep and they go to the Slaughtered Lamb, so it’s not subtle (laughs). No, they’re dead from the first frame. And so it is funny
My intention was I felt the humor would make it more frightening and more real. The central issue of any fantasy film is suspension of disbelief. It’s ver y easy to scare somebody and it’s especially easy to horrify someone; you just show them something horrific and they’re horrified. But to get people emotionally involved in the characters and the people who are in the movie and concerned about their welfare, that’s the trick. And suspension of disbelief, I felt the humor helped that.
And for me, I think the greatest fantasy film of all time is really still “The Wizard of Oz” because that’s a movie that’s completely stagebound and you can see the painted walls of the set, and yet you totally suspend disbelief. You’re totally there with Dorothy You’re there and you’re into it and that movie to me is magic. It’s an incredible accomplishment.

‘The Final Table’

Pressure is a given in culinary competition series, but “The Final Table” throws in a psychological element for good measure.
Now streaming on Netflix, the 10-episode series pits 12 teams of two chefs from around the world cooking the national dishes of Mexico, Italy, Japan, the U.S., Spain, England, Brazil, India and France. Each episode focuses on one country and a panel made up of a food critic, a celebrity food ambassador and a world-renowned chef judge the final product and send a team home. The two teams left standing then vie in the last episode to see which tandem will take their place at the eponymous final table alongside culinary greats from the above countries (who also serve as judges).
In the opening episode on Mexico, the contestants were charged with making a taco. That may sound simple enough but it also led to some head-scratching as they had to figure out how to best play to that episode’s celebrity judge.
“We had no clue how to cook for these celebrity judges,” says contestant Aaron Bludorn, executive chef at Café Boulud in New York City “Were they going to expect us to be outside the box and cook to our own cuisine or were they expecting us to re-create their dish exactly how their mom used to make it? And that was such a huge challenge for us to figure out each episode. And certain chefs took it their ways and succeeded.
“I remember when Graham (Campbell, his partner) and I cooked things in our wheelhouse and then we got shot down,” he continues. “Every episode was different. Because we didn’t know the judges (ahead of time), we couldn’t study up on what their likes or dislikes were and scour their
Instagrams to see what they like taking pictures of. It was just more like, ‘Alright, here we go.’ ”
Timothy Hollingsworth, a chef at Otium in Los Angeles, actually found it easier to cook for the people who would arguably be the toughest critics, the expert chefs.
“Even though there was more pressure because you can be sent home,” he says, “it was actually easier because you knew who you were cooking for You know, if you’re cooking for Enrique Olvera, you know who that is. If you’re cooking for Grant Achatz, you know who that is. Clare Smyth, you know who that is. And you know what their food is. If you know those chefs, you know their style and you can kind of play to that. You can operate within your own style but you know who your audience is.”

The remaining celebrity kid couples advance to the finals in “The Finale: Holiday Special.” Before that, though, judges Mandy Moore, Val Chmerkovskiy and Adam Rippon, along with hosts Jordan Fischer and Frankie Muniz, join all 12 Juniors kid couples and their mentors for a big group dance. The first round of tonight’s competition starts as the finalist couples reprise a favorite dance from earlier in the season. Then, Round 2 challenges them to cut loose in a freestyle performance to a holiday-themed song.

Based in part on a song by Blake Shelton, this 2018 yuletide romance stars Megan Park (“Once Upon a Prince”) as Cara Hill, an Oklahoma businesswoman who finds herself stranded in Chicago by bad weather while trying to fly back from a New York business trip. Country music star Heath Sawyer (Josh Henderson, “Dallas”) is similarly stymied from getting home for Christmas with his recently widowed mother. As they make their way via bus to their destinations, they get to know each other.
8:01 p.m. on STARZ Counterpart Academy Award winner J.K. Simmons returns in his dual role as this head-spinning (but sadly underwatched) sci-fi series returns for its sophomore season. Season 1 saw low-level United Nations employee Howard Silk (Simmons) discovering a secret portal to an alternate reality. Ultimately, Howard and his alt-world doppelganger wound up trapped in each other’s worlds. As the story resumes, both Howards must adapt to their new realities, even as a cold war escalates between their worlds.

Candace (Jodie Sweetin), who has spent her life in the shadow of her mother — celebrity lifestyle mogul Liz Livingstone (Jane Moffat) — is startled to learn Liz is about to retire and turn over control of her empire to Candace. An audition of sorts presents itself when a young Vermont girl (Ana Araujo) begs Liz to arrange a special Christmas party for her dad, a soldier coming home from overseas deployment.
