A power ful enemy looms for Midge in Season 2 of ‘The Mar

It’s one thing to tell jokes and get laughs. It’s quite another to make them at the expense of a very powerful person who can crush your career, as neophyte stand-up comic Midge Maisel finds out at the outset of Season 2 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” this week.

Dropping Wednesday, Dec. 5, on Amazon, the new season finds ‘50s Upper West Side housewife-turned-funnywoman Midge (Golden Globe and Emmy winner Rachel Brosnahan) coming to the gradual realization that she’s ticked off the wrong person, Sophie Lennon (Jane Lynch,

velous Mrs. Maisel’

is a development not lost on her worried manager/sidekick Susie (Emmy winner Alex Borstein).

As the grind of doing stand-up wears on Midge, the pressure to tell her parents Abe and Rose (Tony Shalhoub, Marin Hinkle) about her new life in the wake of her separation from husband Joel (Michael Zegen) mounts and her decisions have a ripple on all concerned.

“You’ll see some of the ramifications of those choices that are made,” Borstein offers. “The show really is this woman Midge Maisel knocking down dominoes constantly and you watch it spread like wildfire and you see the ramifications domino she knocked

And how can we deal with it?”

“Susie, I think is terribly concerned because she knows what it means,” adds Brosnahan of the potential war brewing with Sophie. “Midge, being so new to this world and that particular brand of enemy, doesn’t yet know by the time we leave her in Season 1 what that

could mean. And certainly she will learn more about that in Season 2.”

With a resume that includes a lot of drama (“Manhattan,” “House of Cards,” “The Blacklist”) but little comedy, Brosnahan found herself wading into unfamiliar waters to play Midge. She says the experience of doing a comedic role has been “simultaneously horrifying and extremely rewarding – both equally, at the same time” but adds, “It’s a dream I didn’t know I had, to work on a show like this, to play a character like this.

“In so many ways, not just to be able to stretch in this brand new direction and stretch some comedic muscles that I wasn’t sure I had,” she adds with a laugh, “but also to play such a fully three-dimensional, complicated woman, which shouldn’t be something that is novel but is in a lot of ways. ”

And she gets to walk in the shoes of a stand-up comic, which is something she says she avoided when preparing for the role.

“I just was so afraid that if I tried and likely, inevitably fell flat on my face, I’d be so traumatized that I wouldn’t be able to go down this journey with this character who’s falling in love with stand-up,” Brosnahan explains. “And fortunately the writing is so brilliant that I didn’t think it was a necessary part of preparation.

“Midge is a woman ... who doesn’t start out a stand-up. She’s not a stand-up,” she continues. “She’s just a whipsmart, hilarious housewife and so we’ve had this really lovely parallel journey We’ve gotten to learn together.”

OF ‘ESCAPE ATDANNEMORA’ ON SHOWTIME AND THE MOVIE NETWORK

What was it like for you to film at actual upstate New York locations where events in “Escape at Dannemora” took place?

Well, for me, it felt kind of desolate. There was the prison itself and ever ything that happens in the prison, and the kind of sadness that I think ever yone kind of experiences. But even around there, there was a ripple ef fect where a lot of industr y had moved out.

All these people were just working in the prisons, and there wasn’t a lot to do. Also, just the cold – the intense cold of that area – made me feel like my character is kind of bored and wants to feel alive. I’d hear stories of all these people that were having af fairs, whether they were guards or all these dif ferent stories. Because I think we, as a species, want to feel alive.

The physicality of your character ’s involvement with the prison escapees is a major element of “Escape at Dannemora.” How did you deal with that?

It’s scar y to go to that place, but also, I found it fascinating when I was looking at research. There’s a million porn stars who are 20 years

old (with a) per fect body And there’s this humongous audience for MILFs: big, beautiful women, blah, blah, blah.

People are actually looking for something else. What is it? And is it sexy (or) is it not sexy when someone is into their sexuality? That was also a big par t of it, in a society that I think makes women often apologetic about their sexuality, to have an oppor tunity to kind of look at these themes. It was a par t of Tilly I really wanted to look at.

It looks like Christmas for many of the same

actors

Q: I’ve been seeing a lot of the same actors and actresses in a lot of Christmas movies since those began running again this year. Why is that? –Susan Ashley, Port Orange, Fla.

A: Of course, a lot of the movies being shown by such outlets as Hallmark Channel, Lifetime and UPtv are repeats from past years, so that accounts in par t for it. However, cer tain per formers have long-standing relationships with cer tain networks, as Candace Cameron Bure and Lacey Chaber t do with Hallmark and their movies also have proved to be ver y popular in repeat showings, so they’re often called upon to return and star in new holiday tales.

Sometimes, the talents will switch between networks for Christmas, Sarah Lancaster are doing this season ... but Bethany Joy Lenz yuletide movie after having done one there last year. The situations but it all adds up for many familiar faces as holiday seasons

find a new Kentucky home in Season 16

Say “Kentucky” to most people and you’ll likely conjure mental images of horse races and bottles of fine whiskey

And both come into play as Bravo’s “Top Chef ” heads to the Bluegrass State for its 16th season, which gets underway Thursday Dec. 6, as 15 chefs from across the country compete for the title amid the unique culinary scenes of Louisville, Lexington and Lake Cumberland before heading to Macao, China, for the final showdown.

Along the way, judges Tom Colicchio, Graham Elliot, Nilou Motamed and Gail Simmons and host Padma Lakshmi got to take in the 2018 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs, watch the contestants cook for Laila Ali at the Muhammad Ali Center, oversee a buzzer beater showdown at Rupp Arena with University of Kentucky basketball coach Jon Calipari and visit the Maker’s Mark bourbon distillery.

“Kentucky was fun, actually,” Colicchio, the head judge, reports. “I hadn’t spent much time there, so it was good to see that part of the country. You know, we were there for the Derby, which was a lot of fun. It was something I always wanted to do and never had an opportunity to get to, so that was a lot of fun.

Some of the local foods and stuff really came into play nicely. Obviously, bourbon does and so it was a good couple of weeks I spent there.”

In fact, one of the highlights of the May-June filming for Colicchio was overseeing a competition at the Maker’s Mark distillery in the tiny town of Loretto

“It’s really an amazing operation ...,” Colicchio says. “They’re producing a lot of bourbon but really highquality bourbon it’s quite an operation. And we

did shoot there. We had just a great day there. It was, from what I recall, a beautiful sunny day and we were kind of in between the distillery and a few rickhouses and the setting was really great. That was fun.”

And, of course, there was the Kentucky cuisine, of which the contestants were tasked with coming up with their own interpretations. One was a very popular dish known as burgoo, which is a spicy stew made from game meat.

“For the most part, we were using local ingredients,” Colicchio explains. “We used some local beef that was really good. There’s things like local soy sauce that’s being produced that’s really, really good. So we did use some local products as well.

“But I think what happens with the chefs is that they know they’re going to Kentucky, they start studying, they started doing some homework, and then I think they also leaned heavily on a contestant that was from Kentucky just to sort of understand the culture a little better.”

After years of blowing off family gatherings, Whitney Kennison (Tiya Sircar) takes a long-overdue break from her busy job as a New York event planner to spend Christmas in Chicago with her Grandma Frances (Diane Ladd).
