A reboot of the 1972-1992 series of the same Foster (“Maurice,” 1987), both series are inspired by the “Van der Valk” detecNicolas Freeling. The character’s stories have been adapted not just for TV but well.

Losing such a central character is merely a creative challenge for “Unforgotten” series creator Chris Lang, who told Masterpiece that he and Walker worked on her exit from the show together over two seasons, asking her to stay for Season 4 so that he could, “Write [her] a proper story.” Inspired by how American dramas like “Breaking Bad” deal in big swings, Lang added, “Writing out your lead — it’s quite a challenge there to move forward, but it’s a really good challenge.”

“Mary Tyler Moore” still makes it after all

The life and career of one of television comedy’s most iconic actresses got justified attention in a recent HBO documentar y, and logically, much of that project focused on her eponymous 1970s sitcom. “ The Mary Tyler Moore Show” remains in evidence weekdays on Catchy Comedy, and it continues to hold up beautifully, thanks in no small part to the smart writing that began with series co-creators James L. Brooks and Allan Burns.

The saga of Mary Richards, a local-TV-news producer negotiating her social life as well as her career, also had a major benefit in what Moore – whose company produced the series – understandably called “the best ensemble cast” when she addressed the studio audience after filming the final episode. Edward Asner, Valerie Harper and Cloris Leachman all got their own spinoffs, with Gavin MacLeod, Ted Knight and Georgia Engel also contributing mightily to the sophisticated fun.

more retro rewinds

“The Incredibles” (Freeform, Sunday, Sept. 3): The superhero genre takes some fun ribbing in this animated, Oscar-winning 2004 Disney-Pixar feature, with Craig T. Nelson and Holly Hunter supplying the voices of the superpowered parents who lead their children into a battle with a former admirer turned nemesis (voice of Jason Lee). The 2018 sequel follows immediately

“Jailhouse Rock” (Turner Classic Movies, Saturday, Sept. 9): Elvis Presley was building a film career when he made this 1957 drama, forever known for the star’s onscreen performance of the title song. His unique dance moves get ample display as he plays an ex-convict who becomes a showbiz wunderkind, thanks to a promoter (Judy Tyler) who has a more-than-professional interest in him. Fame changes him, though, and the course of true love does not run smoothly Among the co-stars is Dean Jones, before he started his long run of Disney films.

“Wanted: Dead or Alive” (MeTV, Saturdays): Though he got some notice for the original version of “The Blob,” Steve McQueen really made the leap to movie stardom in “The Magnificent Seven,” and this Western series gave him a good warm-up He plays Josh Randall, a rather intense (this is McQueen, after all) bounty hunter who’s not above helping the person he’s tracking if he determines that his quarry is innocent. Fans of the genre also know this show for the specialized weapon Randall uses, a shortened-barrel Winchester that he’s able to holster

Farm to TV: Chef Molly Yeh shares delicious recipes in ‘Girl Meets Farm’

From “Molly on the Range: Recipes and Stories from an Unlikely Life on a Farm,” her debut cookbook released in 2016, to its 2018 predecessor “Yogurt,” to her current, farm-fresh-loving television show, Molly Yeh has proven herself to be “the duct tape of food” – a chef with endless creative applications who works connecting cultures and who aims to make her ideas accessible to the masses. Yeh’s ries, “Girl Meets Farm,” does exactly that, with episodes airing Sundays on Food Network.

A biography for the author and chef on Food Network’s website describes: “Molly has been featured by the New York Times, Food & Wine, Bon Appetit and New York Magazine, and has contributed to Vanity Fair, Saveur, Condé Nast Traveler Food52, and The Jewish Daily Forward. She was named to Forbes’ 30 under 30 list for 2017 and Apartment Therapy’s 10 under 40 list.”

They continue: “Outside the kitchen, Molly is a Juilliard-trained percussionist and has performed with orchestras around the world, in off-Broadway theater, and as the glockenspielist for the pop band San Fermin. She lives on a farm on the North Dakota-Minnesota border with her fifth-generation farmer husband and their little flock of chickens.”

It is there, on the couple’s border-town farm, that Yeh hosts her Food Network series, “Girl Meets Farm.” The series has been running since June 2018, now boasting 13 seasons of Molly’s most delicious Midwestern meals – dishes often influenced by her Chinese and Jewish heritage.

In its recent seasons, “Girl Meets Farm” has shared recipes such as Mini Strawberry Princess Cakes; Tomato Basil Soup with Parmesan; Beet Ricotta Dip with Vegetables; Blueberry Muffin Smoothies;

Hammy Breakfast Hotdish; Pretzel Crusted Chicken Nuggets Salad; Churro Pancakes; Harissa-Braised Chickpeas with Feta; Yogurt Marinated Chicken Skewers and more, inviting viewers to try the dishes themselves, with in-depth, follow-along recipes shared on the Food Network website.

Aside from her TV hits, Yeh also shares more of her favorite creations on the site, some straight from her bestselling cookbooks. Hungry chefs and kitchen-dwellers of all skill levels are welcome to try their hand at Yeh’s Scalloped Potatoes; Orecchiette with Broccolini and Sausage; Sugared Pork Buns; Baked Challah French Toast; Chicken Pot Hotdish; Pastrami Egg Rolls; Miso Ramen with Fried Pork Cutlet; Shawarma Stuffed Peppers and more creative eats.

With endless (and delicious) talent to share, Molly Yeh invites us into her world with “Girl Meets Farm,” airing Sundays on Food Network.

BEST FOOTBALL MOVIES

“Brian’s Song” (1971): A landmark television drama, this true stor y made stars of James Caan and Billy Dee Williams as football-playing peers Brian Piccolo and Gale Sayers, whose bond didn’t waver in the face of serious illness.

“The Longest Yard” (1974): The remake went for broader laughs, but director Robert Aldrich’s original is a perfect blend of humor and brawn, with Burt Reynolds as a former player who coaches fellow inmates against guards.

“All the Right Moves” (1983): This gritty but earnest highschool-football drama helped Tom Cruise along his road to stardom.

“The Program” (1993): James Caan is superb in going to the other side of the game as a college coach who tries to keep his job while helping his players through various personal problems.

“Any Given Sunday” (1999): Director Oliver Stone captures ever y crunch on the field and ever y maneuver in the boardroom with his saga of a pro team facing big changes, as the coach (Al Pacino) and the team’s new president (Cameron Diaz) clash over ever ything including the latest quarterback (Jamie Foxx).

“The Replacements” (2000): An extremely good-humored tone informs this comedy, featuring Gene Hackman as a coach brought back to a team to guide (you guessed it) replacements - including Keanu Reeves - during a players’ strike.

“Remember the Titans” (2000): The Disney studio got on a trail of inspirational sports dramas with this true stor y of a new highschool coach (Denzel Washington) who unites his racially divided team in early-1970s Virginia.

“We Are Marshall” (2006): The deeply emotional stor y of Marshall University’s football team, which had to rebuild after a plane crash claimed many of its members, stars Matthew McConaughey and Matthew Fox.

“The Blind Side” (2009): Sandra Bullock won an Oscar for this true stor y, casting her as a woman who becomes the surrogate mother of football-star-to-be Michael Oher (played by Quinton Aaron).
