Ken Burns’ ‘Countr y Music’ tells a tale of an ar t form born from love and loss
No matter how you feel about country music, one needn’t be a fan to appreciate “Country Music.”
Indeed, Ken Burns’ latest epic, premiering Sunday, Sept. 15, on PBS (check local listings), is an eightpart, 16-hour documentary that explores the history of the genre, from its roots in Appalachia in the 1920s and ‘30s through its evolution in the South, Southwest and Midwest in the mid- and late-20th century to its decidedly more rock-and-roll-like sound of today
Along the way, the documentary tells the stories of the pioneers who helped shape the music, among them Jimmie Rodgers, Bill Monroe, Hank Williams, Patsy Cline, Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Charlie Pride, Loretta Lynn, Willie Nelson, Dolly Parton, Garth Brooks and the Carter family, whose songs tell the stories of the hardships and joys experienced by ordinary people.
“It’s three chords and the truth,” says Burns, quoting legendary songwriter Harlan Howard. “It does not have the sophistication of classical or some forms of jazz but it has the truth. You can hear the lyrics and they’re describing universal human things and we disguise it. We love to pretend that country music is about pick-up trucks and hound dogs and six-packs of beer and good ole’ boys. No, that’s a subgenre. What country music talks about are two four-letter words that most of us get uncomfortable talking about, and that’s love and loss.”
The film does a good job of explaining the structure of country, with jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis
pointing out that country has its roots in blues, folk and jazz. It also explains the origins of elements like the “blue yodel” and the yelps of “A-ha!,” which became staples of early country music. Clips of early performances by Monroe and others bear that out.
It also offers up a treasure trove of interviews, including with many of the above
Burns, who grew up working in a record store in his native Ann Arbor, Mich., knew about country but was not a fan. That changed after years of work on this project, which he called “daily humiliations of what I didn’t know.”
As to what surprised him most, he says, “Everything.”
“The racial component,” he says, “the extent to which the pantheon of the early days of country music is filled with African-American influence, that the banjo is from Africa. That your strong women from the very beginning and well before anybody in rock and folk is picking up women’s issues, they may not call themselves feminists or talk about women’s liberation.
“Loretta Lynn is singing, ‘Don’t Come Home A-Drinkin’ With Lovin’ on Your Mind’ or ‘The Pill,’ ” he continues. “And I wonder what black eye (the Jefferson Airplane’s) Grace Slick would have gotten if she had been talking about that in her circle. ”

Rienks removes the intimidation factor by ‘Baking It Easy’
Ask Meghan Rienks of Tastemade’s “Baking It Easy With Meghan Rienks” what tools every baker should have and she’ll have a succinct answer “Definitely someone to wash your dishes,” the native Californian says, “ or a really big sink so you can wash your own dishes. But I highly recommend having whoever you’re feeding your food to to give them the job of the dishes. That’s been one of the greatest helps of mine.”
In the recently premiered series that streams new episodes Tuesdays on Facebook Watch’s Tastemade channel, the actress, entrepreneur and self-taught baker uses humor and her quirky personality to teach the basics of baking, with which viewers can unlock the key to the most extravagant and intimidating recipes. In each episode, she gives step-by-step instructions on a specific technique that she then uses to create a dessert, thus giving even the novice the confidence to step out of their comfort zone and tackle the most intricate cakes and flakiest croissants.
In the opening episode titled “Don’t Be a Hot Mess,” she shares a tip on how to make a six-layer cake from three layers, using a dinner knife, a cake knife and toothpicks to perfectly bisect one layer into two level ones and create a cake without lean –a trick that is more difficult than it might seem.
“That’s probably the number one question that I get from people,” Rienks says, “and it was one of the hardest things for me to learn how to make. Even now when I make cakes for my friends, that’s the most impressive but it’s the thing that takes the most practice. And even now, every time I do it you have
are things that I do when it comes to layer cakes. These are things that I have found really helpful.’ And then I was even learning certain things in there and it just makes it so it doesn’t become this like huge obstacle that you’re like, ‘Oh, I could never do that.’
“When you break it down, even if it does seem a little complicated it seems a little bit more attainable and doable.”
In other episodes, Rienks makes several kinds of cookies from sugar cookie dough, a cherry pie, a fruit bundt cake, a roll cake, macaroons and works with tempered chocolate.

Each episode focuses on a great composer, starting with tonight’s premiere, “Vivaldi: Something Completely Different,” which dives into the background of that composer’s masterwork “The Four Seasons.” Yoo also discovers a “new” Vivaldi work and a trove of original manuscripts in Italy.

When this series premiered in 2015, it was a pretty straightforward, action-driven space opera, but starting with Season 2, the cast and writers began building a rich, complex world populated by complicated characters, with an interesting mythology and dialogue that crackles with genuinely witty banter. “Killjoys” goes out at the top of its form tonight with the series finale “Last Dance,” in which Dutch (Hannah JohnKamen) uses Khlyen (Rob Stewart) to bait The Lady, initiating a final showdown. Aaron Ashmore and Luke Macfarlane also star.

TV journalist Gretchen Carlson hosts this one-hour special produced in conjunction with a Lifetime original movie on the same subject. Actress Catherine Oxenberg opens up to Carlson about her bitter personal struggle to extricate one of her daughters from a cult run by Keith Raniere, who ultimately was convicted of racketeering for this enterprise. The hour also includes commentary from a professional cult de-programmer, as well as others who worked tirelessly to take down Raniere and his operation.
