“The French Connection” drives William Friedkin’s talent home classic corner

in “The French Connection”
Of the films that the late director William Friedkin was known for, “ The French Connection” particularly endures for a number of reasons not the least of which is one of the screen’s greatest car pursuits, which Friedkin admitted he shot in a renegade style that only enhances its impact and legend. Turner Classic Movies shows the picture Thursday, Sept. 14, to lead a memorial salute to Friedkin, who died in August.
He won an Oscar for the fact-inspired 1971 police thriller (named its year’s best picture at the awards), as did Gene Hackman as “Popeye” Doyle, a tough
Ne w York detective determined to get the goods on a seemingly untouchable international drug smuggler (Fernando Rey). Roy Scheider also attained stardom as Doyle’s partner, and while there’s much else to recommend about the movie, the chase that puts a wild-driving Doyle on the trail of an overload train is a highlight that’s hard to beat. (TCM has scheduled a second Friedkin tribute night, including “ The Exorcist,” for Nov. 26.)

Despite the “epic” nature of the new series (and, of course, the Walkers), Reedus insists that the entire experience will feel very different from “The Walking Dead.”
“It’s a different story, it sounds different, it feels different, it looks different,” Reedus mused three weeks into filming in late 2022. “It’s exactly what I was hoping to do. Like, I could not be more happy with what we’re getting.”
more retro rewinds
“The Adventures of Superman” (Heroes & Icons, Sunday, Sept. 10): Before the 1950s series turned a bit more light and comical under different producers (and in color), the first-season episode “Drums of Death” was a good example of how foreboding the stories it presented could be. Jimmy Olsen (Jack Larson) and Perry White’s sister (veteran character actress Mabel Albertson) vanish while investigating a voodoo cult in Haiti, sending Perry (John Hamilton) and Clark Kent (George Reeves) on a quest to find them.
“Freaky Friday” (Freeform, Monday, Sept. 11): Filmed a couple of times previously and again since, this fanciful body-switch comedy has served the Disney studio well, including in this 2003 version. Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are quite enjoyable as the mother and daughter who magically make the exchange, a therapist and a would-be musician who each get a new and quite deep understanding of the other by walking in their shoes, quite literally Mark Harmon and Chad Michael Murray also appear
“Magnum, p.i.” (getTV, Monday, Sept. 11): “Limbo” is an appropriate title for the episode that concluded Season 7 of the series, since it originally was intended to end the entire show but CBS ended up renewing it for one more round. A seriously wounded Magnum (Tom Selleck) is in a coma, and his ghostly self pays visits to his friends to consider the times he’s had with each. Elements of the story continued to play out over the first couple of episodes of Season 8.

Henson’s horrors: ‘Halloween Baking Championship’ returns for spooky season
Kids are in school, “PSLs” are back, and that can only mean one thing: “Spooky Season” is right around the corner Pumpkin-flavored everything, apple pies galore, cinnamon practically hanging in the air — no one does Autumn like Food Network, delighting with more tricks and treats in a new season of “Halloween Baking Championship,” premiering Monday, Sept. 11. Season 9 of the competition sees the return of John Henson (“Wipeout”) as host, alongside the all-star panel of celebrity judges who reigned supreme in Season 8: chef Carla Hall (“The Chew”) and patissiers Stephanie Boswell (“Bake Or Break”) and Zac Young (“Top Chef: Just Desserts”).
Food Network has released descriptions for the series’ first two episodes. According to the network, the season begins as “host John Henson welcomes a dozen bakers to the Henson & Sons Carnival, where they’re ready for the ride of their lives. First, they must layer a ‘tarot-misu’ depicting the carnival’s untimely demise. Then, the bakers scare up a new carnival mascot by designing creepy clown cakes.”
Those lucky enough to make it to the second episode will face a frightfully gory night, with the Food Network promising a particularly “bloody” competition. “Do-nut try to steal John Henson’s dream job,” they say, “ or things might get bloody The remaining bakers make bloody filled doughnuts to commemorate an unfortunate accident. Then it’s a joyful bake for some and doomed one for others as the competitors take judges [Hall, Boswell and Young] round and round on the creepiest carousel ever.”
Each episode will see two rounds of spine-chilling competition. The bakers begin with the “Preliminary Heat,” where they receive a bite-sized, Halloween-themed challenge that must be completed within a tight time frame. The patissier who presents the spookiest (and most delicious) treat will gain a mystery advantage — a trick to play against their fellow bakers, perhaps — heading into the “Main Heat.”

Carla Hall from “Halloween Baking Championship”
This second round sees some intense frights and delights, as competitors are given a new theme and a longer time period to create whatever creepy-crawly confection they’d like. The bakers must present something larger than life, as the winner of the “Main Heat” immediately advances to the next round while one baker is eliminated from the game. The final three (or four) then compete in a winner-take-all finale, with one monstrous baker winning $25,000.
Sharpen your teeth and prepare to dine. Season 9 of “Halloween Baking Championship” begins Monday, Sept. 11, on Food Network.

Sydney
Pollack
behind the scenes of “Three Days of Condor”
“The Slender Thread” (1965): In his feature directing debut, episodic television veteran Pollack keeps tension high as a crisis-line volunteer (Sidney Poitier) counsels a suicidal woman (Anne Bancroft) via telephone. “They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?” (1969): Gig Young earned an Academy Award for the Pollack-directed 1930s dance-marathon drama.
“The Way We Were” (1973): “Streisand! Redford! ogether!” So said the ads, and with Pollack directing them, the recipe was perfect.
“The Yakuza” (1974): Robt Mitchum is terrific in Pollack’s melodrama about a detective’s ltration of the title Japanese crime syndicate.
“Three Days of the Condor” (1975): For all the government-paranoia thrillers of the mid-1970s, this Redford-starring CIA saga stands out. The cast also includes Faye Dunaway, Max von Sydow and John Houseman.
“Bobby Deerfield” (1977): This moody, underrated drama draws fine work from Al Pacino as a troubled race-car driver.
“The Electric Horseman” (1979): A fun reunion of Redford and Jane Fonda revolves around a reporter who sees a stor y in a washed-up rodeo star.
“Out of Africa” (1985): Pairing Redford with Mer yl Streep, Pollack won an Oscar for directing this scenic, true tale.
“The Firm” (1993): Pollack confidently directs Tom Cruise and a sterling supporting cast — ranging from Gene Hackman, Holly Hunter and Paul Sor vino to Hal Holbrook, Wilford Brimley and Steven Hill — through the long but compelling John Grisham law drama.
“Sabrina” (1995): While this remake doesn’t stand up to the original romantic comedy overall, it’s still notable for the excellent performance Pollack draws from Greg Kinnear in his first major acting role.
“Michael Clayton” (2007): As an actor, Pollack hit one of his career highs as the head of the law firm for which Clayton (George Clooney) fixes troublesome situations.
