Executive producer Kurt Sutter’s follow-up to his acclaimed, successful motorcycle-club drama “Sons of Anarchy” returns as “Mayans M.C.” begins its second FX season Tuesday, Sept. 3. Would-be Mayans member Ezekiel “EZ” Reyes (played by JD Pardo) is caught between various factions by agreeing to inform for federal agents on the Galindo cartel, whose leader Miguel (Danny Pino) is married to EZ’s exgirlfriend Emily (Sarah Bolger). EZ’s brother Angel (Clayton Cardenas) also works against the Galindos as a member of the Rebel group, and last season, the siblings were drawn into the murders of two agents to maintain their own agendas.

The elder statesman of “Mayans M.C.” – not only for his character in the series, EZ and Angel’s father Felipe, but also for his show-business status – is “Miami Vice” Emmy winner Edward James Olmos. He believes “the show is moving in a very, very strong way, and I think the second season is much more intense and much more rewarding to the viewer than the first season, so I’m really proud of it. And the writing is just magnificent.”

“It’s not a coincidence that I’m drawn to damaged characters in very dark worlds,” says Sutter, who co-created “Mayans M.C.” with fellow executive producer Elgin James. “ That’s where I tend to thrive creatively, and violence is part of that. The lethal force is part of that. I tr y to be as responsible as I can creatively, so it isn’t just me working s... out, you know? Ultimately, there is a rhyme and a rhythm and a code to that process. ”
Co-star Pardo adds that despite its rough edges, “Mayans M.C.” is “just universal in that it really is a stor y about family and sur vival. It’s about a

However, he stresses that on his show, “It’s never gratuitous, it’s not pretty, it’s not sexy, and there’s always ramifications. Those are the standards that I hold myself to in portraying violence.
“From the time I (was) writing on ‘ The Shield’ to ‘Mayans,’ it was never done in a vacuum,” Sutter adds, “and there was always payback, whether it came in the same episode or three seasons later. With stories, as it is in life, violence shatters humanity And that’s my job, to put that into stor y, you know? It’s the world I live in.”

Working through feelings with food and creativity on Tastemade’s ‘Just Jen’
Feeling down, worried or in a rut? Jen Phanomrat feels your pain. In fact, she has a recipe for that.
In “Just Jen,” currently streaming its second season on the foodie/travel digital platform Tastemade, the New York-born lifestyle personality shares her passion for food and design through a variety of bright and eclectic dishes and crafts, believing that creativity – whether it’s manifested in cooking, crafting or simply living – should be accessible, enjoyable, inspiring and approached with humor
“We really wanted a show that wasn’t preachy or authoritative,” Phanomrat explains, “but we wanted it to be really fun. So we use entertainment as a way to explore a lot of real issues like mental health, female empowerment and culture identity on the basis of curiosity and I wanted to do that through food because that’s my big love. So by sharing approachable recipes and craft projects, I wanted to encourage viewers to explore these aspects within their own selves and their surroundings.”
Many of the recipes she shares are her own creations and she credits her upbringing in Jackson Heights in Queens, N.Y., for her eclectic palate. But this season, the Thai-Filipino-American is also bringing in dishes from old family recipes that she says “are just feel-good because that’s the main thing. I just want everything to feel good.”
Among the topics broached in Season 2 are fierceness, love, motivation, community, travel and sadness.
“When I’m feeling sad,” she says, “what do I want to eat? I want to eat something that’s junk food but doesn’t really make me feel crappy So we made a too.
“We have a whole episode dedicated to feeling spicy so that’s something I do often at home,” she says with a laugh. “When I’m just feeling either lethargic or I need something to kick my ass, I’ll add a bunch of spice but make it tasty, and it just reinvigorates me. ”
The point, Phanamorat says, is help people negotiate whatever mood they’re in through food and creativity
“We know that people deal with these things,” she says, “and I wanted to share how I authentically navigate through that and how I try to make myself feel good so that others can try to make themselves feel good.”
