Kirsten Dunst stars in “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” premiering Sunday on Showtime.
Kirsten Dunst has a soft spot for satire.
The actress has proven it in projects from the movie “Drop Dead Gorgeous” to the second season of the series “Fargo.” She tackles the genre again – as both the star and (along with fellow “ER” alum George Clooney and others) an executive producer – as a revengeminded crusader against a pyramid marketing scheme that costs her a lot in the early 1990s in “On Becoming a God in Central Florida,” initially made for YouTube Red but with Showtime debuting it instead on Sunday, Aug. 25.
“Mostly, I always look for (a desired) director or things that I would want to see or characters I’d like to play,” Dunst explains. “and I have to say this material was just so special to me. It’s been three years now, and we’ve really had a little bit of a roller coaster of how this show actually got made to now being at Showtime.”
The series’ Founders American Merchandise – or FAM, to make the acronym clear – is fictional, but actual operations have shared its personalized approach that Dunst’s character Kr ystal Stubbs comes to oppose with fur y. “I wasn’t totally familiar with that kind of multilevel marketing scheme,” Dunst says, “but I was more familiar with cults and that kind of thing, which I think this is comparable to.”
Co-star Mel Rodriguez (“ The Last Man on Earth”), who plays Kr ystal’s boss at a water park, has had experience with such situations. “My mother was in Grand Rapids, Mich., where Amway started,” he notes, “and she almost got into it and regrets the day that she didn’t, because she would have been really wealthy now.
“Later on, my poor mom got involved with an oil company, and she called me and told me all the benefits of this oil. She kept saying, ‘ They’re pharmaceutical grade, honey.’ That was the big thing. And we ended up having to buy (it) all off of her, all the kids. And it was really awful, because it took advantage of this older woman who really didn’t know any better. She spent money she didn’t have, a little over $1500.”
Adds executive producer Esta Spalding, “Everyone on the show wants something more for their life, and there’s no way they can get that working for minimum wage in 1992. That’s when Americans were really betrayed; the working class couldn’t earn a living that they could sustain and feed their families with, so they’re all reaching for something else, and the (FAM) scheme moves into that. This show really lives in the world of people just tr ying to be happy in their daily lives, and they’re being preyed on. ”

Bobby and Sophie Flay share meals and memories on ‘The Flay List’
Bobby and Sophie Flay have always bonded over food, he as the chef and she as the diner and tastetester, and now their relationship is front and center of a recently premiered series on Food Network.
In “The Flay List,” airing Thursdays, the chef, restaurateur and network personality and his 23-year-old daughter bring viewers along on a foodie tour of New York City, each taking the other to a place that they think is particularly noteworthy But these picks aren’t limited to finedining establishments. Far from it in fact, as burger, taco and pizza joints are usually in the mix, with the senior Flay’s tastes tending toward Big Apple classics that the two frequented in her childhood and Sophie’s running to places she’s discovered that are getting a lot of buzz.
As the two sample a single dish, they walk down memory lane and discuss why the meal and the eatery is important to them.
“He brought me to some of his favorites, classics, New York staples,” Sophie Flay explains, “but then I got to bring him to different restaurants that are doing the same variation, whether it be a burger or a taco but a little bit newer and fresher. ... Every place that we went to was amazing. Taste-wise, flavor-wise everything was great but it was a very cool opportunity to kind of see what he was used to and what he thinks is some of the best food in New York, and for me to kind of have had that experience growing up and to show him places that I found along the way obviously based off of what he likes

And they’re always playing hip-hop John Seymour is a great guy and has really made a chicken-and-waffles place super-authentic. He’s a New York City kid and it definitely feels like a nice little chicken-and-waffles (place) and it’s got a great New York City vibe to it.”
As for Dad’s pick, that would be Blue Ribbon, which touts their bird as being “World Famous.”
“I grew up eating that fried chicken,” she says, “and he has so many stories from when he was younger about eating that chicken, too, kind of just coming up in the New York City food scene. ”

HBO is keeping most of the story information under wraps at the moment, but Dwayne Johnson returns as financial manager Spencer Strasmore as the hit sports dramedy returns for its fifth season. Season 4 ended on an explosive note, as Spencer filed a lawsuit against the NCAA, charging that the organization was complicit in his brother’s suicide. The group responded by offering to reinstate the suspended Quincy (Eli Goree) if the suit were dropped. John David Washington, Omar Miller and Rob Corddry also return.
