“Hair” is still wor th getting into
The recent passing of Treat Williams makes a viewing of “Hair” bittersweet now, but director Milos Forman’s 1979 screen version of the hit stage musical is very much worth seeing for the amazing energy that the Vietnam War-era project retains in the transition from live theater to film with Williams’ memorable performance no small part of that. MGM+ presents the movie Thursday, Aug. 24.
The actor plays Berger, the leader of a band of Ne w York hippies –and a very strong influence on a militar y draftee (John Savage) who begins to second-guess his plans for a relatively conser vative future after being exposed to the very free lifestyle of his new acquaintances. Beverly D’Angelo, Annie Golden and Melba Moore also are in the cast of the picture, which boasts songs that became iconic – including the title tune, “Aquarius,” “Let the Sunshine In” and “Good Morning Starshine.” A particular showstopper is Williams’ rendering of “I Got Life.”
fan-favorite former Jedi Knight finally gets her live-action, moment in the new Disney+ limited series, “Star Wars: debuting Wednesday, Aug. 23, on the streamer Starring awson (“Dopesick”) in the title role, the eight-episode Ahsoka Tano as she takes on the not-so-small task of galaxy from imminent threats.

more retro rewinds
“The Idolmaker” (Paramount+ With Showtime, streaming): Director Taylor Hackford’s fabulous 1980 drama-with-music is informed by great original tunes and the excellent acting of Ray Sharkey as a would-be songwriter who becomes a self-styled late-1950s talent manager, transforming a naive restaurant worker (Peter Gallagher, also superb, in his movie debut) into a teen idol named Caesare. With success comes strife, though, as the new star becomes overwhelmed by sudden fame. Tovah Feldshuh, Joe Pantoliano and Maureen McCormick (yes, TV’s Marcia Brady) also appear
“The Monkees” (Catchy Comedy, Sunday, Aug. 20): Though the musical quartet was formed for purposes of this comedy series, the foursome also had some genuine hit records (“Daydream Believer,” the Neil Diamond-composed “I’m a Believer,” etc.) – virtually all of which are heard here as a weekend marathon of the show continues.
“House of Wax” (Turner Classic Movies, Wednesday, Aug. 23): Vincent Price was one of the most famous faces of horror during much of his career, and this 1953 chiller – a remake of “Mystery of the Wax Museum” that originally was shown in 3-D – provides solid evidence of the reasons. Part of a “Summer Under the Stars” salute to the actor, it casts him as a sculptor and museum operator whose wax statues seem unusually lifelike. Notable in the supporting cast as a henchman is Charles Buchinsky, who went on to become a star in his own right under the name Charles Bronson.

Secret showdown: “Bobby’s Triple Threat” takes the competition underground
Somewhere deep under the hustle and bustle of New York City stands a kitchen unlike any other: a kitchen built for titans. Only accessible by password — and to us lucky viewers — chef Bobby Flay invites the most talented in the industry to visit his underground kitchen and compete in another round of culinary’s most exclusive competition: Season 2 of “Bobby’s Triple Threat” begins Tuesday, Aug. 22, on Food Network.
The series, hosted and orchestrated by Flay, follows as a trio of culinar y titans (talented chefs handpicked by Bobby) head to the host’s speakeasy-style kitchen, where they will face off in a secret showdown against some of the most skilled chefs in the game in order to see who really is the best of the best.
This season, Flay welcomes titans including Brooke Williamson, who earned worldwide acclaim as the youngest female chef to ever cook at the James Beard House; Michael Voltaggio, a Michelin star-rated chef and “Top Chef ” winner; and Tiffany Derry, a two-time James Beard Award finalist, former “Top Chef ” contestant, and current owner of Roots Southern Table.
“[The titans] have competed in and won countless tournaments, proving their culinar y excellence and securing their names and reputations among the very best in the biz,” Food Network explains. “ This time, though, they won’t be competing to earn glor y but to keep it. Over the course of three head-to-head rounds, elite chef-contestants will battle the titans and have their food judged in blind taste tests.” Making matters more complicated, Flay will choose an

ingredient that must be featured in each dish.
Whoever finishes the competition on top earns not only bragging rights, but a whopping $25,000 prize.
“Season 1 of ‘Triple Threat’ was just a warm-up,” Flay recently claimed. “In Season 2, I welcome 10 of the best chefs in the country to take on the titans. The challengers walk through the speakeasy door with the utmost confidence — but will they walk out with the same swagger and $25,000? Not if my chefs have anything to say about it.”
The competition will put Bobby’s best to the test, however, as this season’s guest competitors include “Iron Chef ” stars Michael Symon and Jose Garces; “Chopped” judge Scott Conant; Kelsey Bernard Clark; Esther Choi; Kelvin Fernandez; Byron Gomez; Rashida Holmes; Mei Lin and Shota Nakajima.

BEST LEONARD BERNSTEIN SCREEN PROJECTS
“On the Town”
“On the Town” (1949): For this iconic musical, legendar y composer Bernstein – whose “Kaddish Symphony” will be showcased by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra on PBS’ “Great Performances” Monday, Aug. 21 (check local listings) –worked with the team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green on the songs
for its original stage incarnation. Some were dropped from the movie (to Bernstein’s great displeasure), but still, the tunes help Gene Kelly (also the film’s co-director), Frank Sinatra and Jules Munshin have a blast as sailors in a 24-hour leave in “New York, New York.”
“Omnibus” (1954-58):
Though they technically were called “lectures,” Bernstein’s telecasts about various elements of music for this arts series were much more exciting than that word might suggest. With help from other musicians, he brought works by Beethoven and Bach (among others) to life, delving into what he believed their mindsets to be when they created some of their most famous compositions.
“New York Philharmonic Young People’s Concerts” (1958-72): An offshoot of Bernstein’s “Omnibus” involvement was this much-acclaimed series that posed such titular questions as
“What Does Music Mean?” and “Who Is Gustav Mahler?” ... and then proceeded to answer them through carefully chosen selections that represented the best of whatever the given episode’s subject was. The program proved internationally popular, with more than 40 countries running it.
“West Side Story” (1961): Arguably the most celebrated example of Bernstein’s music on film (with lyrics by Stephen Sondheim), the “Romeo and Juliet”-like stor y of young lovers on opposite sides of a turf war between two New York gangs – the Sharks and the Jets — includes some of the most famous songs ever devised for the musical theater, including “Somewhere,” “Tonight,” “America” and “I Feel Pretty.” The movie won 10 of the 11 Oscars it was nominated for, including best picture; the stor y and tunes also fueled the Steven Spielberg-directed 2021 version.
