After ‘Sharknado,’ Ian Ziering battles a ‘Zombie Tidal Wave’

When you don’t have sharks left to fight, what’s next?

Well, zombies at least in Ian Ziering’s view. Also back in Fox’s current “BH90210” sequel series, the actor is returning to action-horror turf after sur viving six “Sharknados.” He and a fellow veteran of that movie franchise – writer Thunder Levin – devised the stor y for “Zombie Tidal Wave,” making its Syfy debut Saturday, Aug. 17. Ziering is a producer as well on the thriller, which also brings back another “Sharknado” alum, director Anthony C. Ferrante.

“After doing those movies and realizing the need for content, I figured, ‘ Why don’t I tr y to do something on my own?’ ” Ziering reflects. “I’ve got a production company, and I always wanted to branch out. It was right around the time of ‘Sharknado 2: The Second One’ that I recognized the formula Syfy looks for in its movies, and I pitched them ‘Zombie Tidal Wave.’ And I knew that once I got the green light from them, finding financing would be pretty easy.”

Though he was ready to go at that point five years ago, Ziering explains “Zombie Tidal Wave” was delayed because “we kept making ‘Sharknados.’

Once those came to an end, I was able to get into production with this, and we shot it in Thailand. I’d had enough with shooting in freezing climates! Plus, the landscape there is really conducive to this movie; it creates a perfect visual context. ”

‘PEN15,’ that was maybe my favorite new show this year It was just so hilarious. Those girls are incredible.”

Ziering’s successor to “Sharknado’s” chainsawwielding Fin Shepard is Hunter Shaw, who also has a unique weapon – “Hell, yeah!,” Ziering confirms – derived from zombie lore that the actor-producer researched. “ There’s something I find fascinating about a fish-out-of-water scenario,” he says, “with an ordinar y man who has to rise to the level of doing extraordinar y things. When failure isn’t an option, people can achieve great things and I like characters like that.

“Hunter is someone who has distanced himself from society,” adds Ziering. “He’s a retired firefighter who lived in New York and lived through 9/11, and all the death and disaster was a system overload for him. As much as he enjoyed helping people, it was crushing for him not to be able to save everyone. He’s got a boat and sails the seas, and now, he finds himself on one of the outer islands of Southeast Asia.”

Biological experimentation generates the zombies the tidal wave ultimately delivers, and as with “Sharknado,” Ziering (also seen lately in DC Universe’s “Swamp Thing”) hopes there’s more to come. “As with everything, you aim for the stars,” he reasons, “but it all depends on the audience’s reaction to this. We have ideas for a half-dozen or more stories to continue this.”

Chefs dial up their creativity on Food Network’s ‘Supermarket Stakeout’

Most people don’t like being approached as they leave stores.

Whether it’s someone hitting them up for money or telling them their car was hit, the news usually isn’t good.

But in “Supermarket Stakeout,” premiering Tuesday, Aug. 13, on Food Network, the interactions can be profitable. Here, four competing professional chefs ambush shoppers as they exit the store and negotiate with them for their bags of groceries sight unseen, being mindful of staying within their budget of $500. They’re then tasked with creating a cohesive, themed dish with the contents of their newly purchased bag in the nearby pop-up kitchen, with the final products to be evaluated by a rotating panel of judges.

The twist here is that the challenge might be something like making a breakfast sandwich but all that’s in the bag is a chocolate cake and hors d’oeuvres. As one can imagine, much outside-thebox thinking ensues.

“It really leaves a lot unknown ...,” explains Alex Guarnaschelli, the show’s host. “There’s this wildcard difference between what the contestants have to achieve and what they might get in the bag. Someone was having a barbecue and I found that the contestants didn’t know what to expect. They had their expectation of what they wanted in the bag but there was no guarantee. So there was this wonderful meshing of sort of the stories of why people go to the supermarket and what they buy and what the contestants do with that and the amount of imagination that they end up enlisting to achieve their goal.”

Some chefs’ negotiation skills were good, says Guarnaschelli, and others weren’t. And if time was

price gouging, some people were reasonable. I think somebody bought a $40 quart of milk. You know, it can get rough out there. It’s a stakeout.”

As for the dishes themselves, Guarnaschelli says they were remarkable in more ways than one.

“Anything that could have been better executionwise was so impressive in terms of resourcefulness and creativity that I didn’t care,” she says. “And it was unbelievably creative, very creative. Very resourceful. I consider resourcefulness creativity and I think when we go home at night and you’re tired and you didn’t go to the supermarket, you really engage in your own kitchen stakeout and I think that’s a lot of what happened here. ‘Alright, this is what I have. I gotta make dinner.’ ”

In this adaptation of the fourth novel in Andrews’ sprawling Casteel family saga, fate delivers a blow to Annie Stonewall (Lizzie Boys), who finds herself both orphaned and crippled. After her great-grandfather Tony Tatterton (Jason Priestley) spirits her away to the family estate, Annie pines for her half-brother Luke (Keenan Tracey) and the rest of her lost family. As her despair grows, the imposing Nurse Broadfield (Daphne Zuniga) forces her more deeply into submission.

Retired 9/11 New York firefighter turned sailor Hunter Shaw (Ian Ziering) is forced back into hero mode when his seaside island community is hit by a tidal wave that unleashes a horde of ravenous zombies on the town in this entertainingly cheesy made-for-TV horror flick, which re-teams Ziering with his old “Sharknado” director, Anthony C. Ferrante. Ziering also co-produces and co-wrote the story for this new project, which airs as part of Syfy’s “Off the Deep End Weekend,” which also includes encore screenings of the “Sharknado” movies.
