Learn some new things about lawmen and outlaws during this weekend’s Bass Reeves Western History Conference.
Bass Reeves was a deputy in Indian Territory before becoming a Muskogee police officer after statehood.
ShIronbutterfly Ray, a conference director, said the conference will feature more authors, more characters and an extra tour.
The conference begins Friday with a trolley tour of Fort Gibson, authors’ discussions and an authors’ panel.

Muskogee salutes the legacy of lawman Bass Reeves this Saturday. Reeves was a deputy U.S. marshal and a Muskogee police officer.
Saturday activities include an interactive tour of Muskogee sites and personalities associated with Bass Reeves. A Wild West shootout, catered lunch and
more discussions will follow.
The interactive tour, which loads at 9 a.m. Saturday, will visit downtown Muskogee sites where Reeves patrolled. People portraying Reeves, outlaw Belle Starr and other characters step onto the trolley and talk about their experiences.
Ray said the interactive tour features new characters, such as Cherokee outlaw, Ned Christie.
“He was the one that got away as far as Bass Reeves capturing him,” Ray said. “He is significant in Cherokee history as a good man gone bad. He gets accused of crimes he didn’t commit.”
Omar Reed, historic interpreter at Fort Gibson Historic Site, will portray Bass Reeves. He said he

learned some interesting things about the territorial lawman.
“What’s fascinating is how family-oriented and businesslike he was for an illiterate person,” Reed said. “He was respected by outlaws. A large number of people came for his funeral — blacks, whites, Indians, poor people, bankers. He was well liked by everyone, even the ones he put in jail.”
However, he was all business when it came to the law, Reed said.
“He arrested his own preacher for bootlegging,” Reed said. “He arrested his own son for beating his wife.”
Reed said there were reportedly no crimes committed on Reeves’ beat while he was a police officer.
Belle Starr will be portrayed by Donna Knecht, who says the outlaw was misunderstood.
“You read 15 different books, and they all say something different.” Knecht said. “She knew what she wanted. I don’t think she participated in robberies. But she did like the bad boys.”
Knecht said Belle Starr wanted to be a lady — and that’s how she is portrayed.
“Belle rode side-saddle, I have a side-saddle,” she said. “She carried a Colt .45 with a pearl handle. I carry a Colt .45 with a pearl handle.”
Knecht is part of the Indian Territory Pistoliers, an old West re-enactment group.
Ray said the Pistoliers will stage a gunfight north of Three Rivers Museum at noon Saturday. Also, hold on to your hats, the group could stage a trolley robbery.
A catered barbecue lunch will be served at noon Saturday.
Art Burton, author of a Bass Reeves’ biography, will speak at 1 p.m. Saturday. Ray said Burton will offer new information about Reeves.
Authors speaking Friday are Bob Ernst and Larry Yadon.
Ray said people can register through Friday for the entire conference or different parts of the conference.

The Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion organizations have served soldiers since World War I. Members of the groups volunteer to provide services, entertainment and recreational activities, and are especially interested in reaching out to younger veterans who have served since Vietnam.
Rod Ross is a lifetime member of both groups and is building manager for American Legion Post 50, the little rock building at Sequoyah City Park. It was chartered in the 1930s.
“A lot of the World War I era vets were part of the WPA works that did the rock work on the building,” said Ross.
Meetings are held there and the building is available for reunions, anniversary celebrations, and birthday and private parties.
“We are in the process of generating funds for our roof. The VFW by the old Safeway just had a complete fundraiser and has a new roof and other repairs,” he said.
The old rocket outside may be how most people recognize the VFW building.
The Women’s Auxiliary Post 3707 meets there, said Deborah Smoke, the current treasurer.
“We have bingo every Monday; at 6:30 p.m. is mini bingo and at 7 is the regular session of bingo. The DAV [Disabled American Veterans] meets here the second Monday of the month with a potluck lunch at 11:30 and a meeting at noon. And the first and third Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to noon, the service officers are here to help veterans with any services,” said Smoke. “Any veteran, of any era and any branch, is welcome to come for coffee and doughnuts.”
The third facility in Tahlequah, American Legion post 135 on Legion Road just off Allen Road, is the newest. Aron Dunlap is first vice commander of Post 135.

The Legionnaires meet the second Thursday of the month at 7 p.m., the ladies Auxiliary meet the second Tuesday at 6:15 p.m.
“That’s the wives, mothers and daughters of Legionnaires,” said Dunlap. “Sons of American Legionnaires are children of veterans, and even though they didn’t serve, they are children of veterans, and meet the third Thursday at 7 p.m.”
The post hosts monthly dances for the public, usually the third Saturday, and has many areas of com-
munity outreach, including parades, and Boys State and Girls State.
For Dunlap, American Legion is “kind of like a brotherhood.”
“I’m an Iraqi veteran, 2006-2007; I was in the Army and served eight years and another four in the National Guard. We want to reach out and help our community. We want to remember those who have come before us and fought for our nation,” Dunlap said. “We have a wall that boasts our heroes, and regardless of what war we fought in, we’re all
fighting for freedom and diplomacy, but really, we were fighting for the men on our left and right.”
Becky Wolfe is a member of both organizations and serves on the Cherokee County Veterans Council, as a former president.
“The council is formed of 14 groups and meets the fourth Tuesday at noon at the VFW building, the one with the rocket. Everyone is welcome,” said Wolfe. “We work hard to

help our community, and to help veterans. With our large member base of veterans involved, we can help change laws that get veterans more help.”
In Tahlequah, there is an effort to reach out to younger veterans, said Wolfe.
“We have one World War II veteran left, Joe Thornton – and we’re looking for younger members who need services and to come enjoy these organizations,” Wolfe said.
The Auxiliary sends girls to Girls State, said Wolfe, and the American Legion sends boys to Boys State, “to help young minds be more patriotic.”
They also contribute to a children’s home, several veterans’ homes around the state and volunteer at the VA hospital in Muskogee.
“Anyone needing to turn in flags that are tattered and not repairable can bring them to any of the three facilities, when people are there, during events and activities. The American Legion has a retirement ceremony every year,” Wolfe said. “We’ll make sure they’re properly retired.”
Most members are in their 70s, and it’s a little difficult for them to accomplish the missions of the VFW and American Legion, said John Reid, commander of the American Legion Post 50 and VFW Post 3707 and current president of the Cherokee County Veterans Council.
“We support service men and women who are currently deployed with care packages, and discharged veterans can learn about services available to them,” said Reid. “We want to get younger members who served in Iraq, Afghanistan, Desert Storm and Desert Shield – any place they’ve served, we welcome them and encourage them to become active in one of our groups.”
Due to lack of participation, Reid said, they’ve considered closing the local posts, but they hope to gain new membership before that happens.
One event not well-publicized is the annual Marines of Tahlequah, which hosts a Marine Corps Ball every November.
“Some of the money from that also goes to support Help-In-Crisis and groups like that,” said Reid.
Contact John Reid at 918 931-1386 for more information about activities at the American Legion and DAV posts.

S omething evil is afoot in a small Texas backwater and a group of unusual locals is determined to put a stop to it in a new supernatural thriller series debuting this week on NBC.
In “Midnight, Texas,” which premieres Monday, July 24, nothing is what it seeks and abnormal is normal. In this place where the veil between the living and the dead is at its thinnest, those looking to hide from the outside world will find safe haven.
Into this remote burg comes Manfred (Francois Arnaud, “The Borgias”), a charming, powerful psychic with an ability to communicate with the dead. His presence raises the suspicions of assassin Olivia (Arielle Kebbel, “The Vampire Diaries”), mainly
because no one comes to Midnight of their own volition.
Midnight is also home to Bobo (Dylan Bruce, “Orphan Black”), proprietor of the local pawn shop; Fiji (Parisa FitzHenley, “Luke Cage”), a witch and owner of the local wiccan shop; Joe (Jason Lewis, “Sex and the City”), an angel hip to all of Midnight’s secrets; Lemuel (Peter Mensah, “True Blood”), a wise vampire in a rather unusual and symbiotic relationship with Olivia; Creek (Sarah Ramos, “Parenthood”), an aspiring writer whose family harbors a deep secret; and the Rev. Emilio Sheehan (Yul Vazquez, “Seinfeld”), a cleric swayed by the full moon.
When Aubrey Hamilton, Bobo’s fiancee, is found dead in a creek, the victim of an apparent ritualistic slaying, suspicion immediately falls
on Bobo. So the locals must band together to find out the truth behind the crime, among them Olivia.
Kebbel, whose roles have been mainly in dramas and comedies, saw in Olivia the chance to play an action heroine, a genre she’s eager to get into.
“Olivia Charity is quite the woman,” the actress says. “She’s a hit woman. She’s also considered to be the town protector along with Lem, who is the resident vampire, and Olivia and Lem are in a relationship together that is very deep and twisted and we’ll explore that as the season goes on. And for me, what I love about bringing Olivia to life is that she continues to surprise me. She continues to bring parts out of myself that either I didn’t know were there or I did know was

“Midnight, Texas” premieres Monday on NBC.
there but was scared to bring out. And I feel like she allows me to be this strong, fearless, bold, sassy woman with no apologies and I love that.”
The opening episode introduces viewers to the Olivia/Lem relationship in a scene that resembles a standard vampire-bitesvictim-on-neck scenario, except there is no biting, no blood and both appear to gain something from the exchange.
“Leeching actually provides life for both of them in a special way,” Kebbel explains, “because when it just gets too unbearable for her, Lem leeches the anger out of her and in turn that anger gives him energy so he doesn’t have to go and feed on blood. So the exchange between them is I think a really beautiful thing.”

Make no mistake about it: Omar Benson Miller, Charles Greane on HBO’s “Ballers,” is a tennis fan.
He follows the sport, he plays it, and he even reports from the four Grand Slam tournaments for his Tennis Channel series “Advantage Omar.”
“I love it,” the 38-year-old native of Anaheim, Calif., says. “It’s exhausting what we’re doing because we’re eating and drinking our way through the Slam and actually going to the tournament, so there’s a lot because we have such a tight window to turn around the episodes. But at the same time, this is an ideal gig. Anybody who complains about this is a lunatic.”
“I’m going to get to play,” he continues. “I’m going to get to hang out in the practice stuff, especially at the beginning of the tournament when there’s some time. It’s not like they’re giving me carte blanche to go out to Centre Court but I still get to get out there and mess around, which is great.”
As Season 3 of “Ballers” gets going Sunday, July 23, Charles is working at the job to which he was promoted at the end of last season. But as with anything in life, he finds that success comes at a price.
“He’s become a more integral force in the organization as far as upper management
goes,” Miller explains, “and his job is going to require him to move and shake a little more outside of Miami. And with that, that causes the obvious strain in his relationship with being a new father and still trying to maintain his duties as a husband. So there’s a lot of turbulence that takes place in Season 3 in the Greane household.”

‘Sean in the Wild’ offers up a cornucopia of foodie content
Despite its title, “Sean in the Wild” has nothing to do with wildlife, wilderness or anything about the woods.
Instead, the series on the First We Feast YouTube channel takes host Sean Evans (“Hot Ones”) to places here and abroad to sample the unusual and the exotic and/or to offer up how-tos on things like the proper way to grill a steak or the finer points of making sushi. Along the way, celebrities join him.
It’s a little bit of this and a little bit of that and something any self-respecting foodie will want to check out.
“When we come up with these concepts,” the Chicago native explains, “it’s usually about finding something that’s going to fit the celebrity guest.
“So like with Raekwon for example,” he continues, “it’s been 22 years I think since his hit song ‘Ice Cream’ came out, so we’re like, ‘What do we do with Raekwon?’ We’re like, ‘Oh, we should do an ice cream thing with Raekwon.’ And then it was like, ‘Well, where do we do the ice cream thing at?’ And it’s like, ‘Oh well, Nick Morgenstern is this interesting ice cream maker who has a chef’s touch and this totally cool shop on the Lower East Side. So it’s like, if we can get him to buy into this whole thing, then that will feel like a pretty cool video. And then Nick just happens to be a huge Wu-Tang Clan fan who was influenced specifically by that ‘Ice Cream’ song and so it kind of like turned out to be this sort of beautiful experience for everybody.”
In another episode, Evans and the rock band Papa Roach chow down on various insects, among them scorpions, crickets and mealworms. While he admits he had to gird himself to bring the dried creatures to his lips, he says they didn’t taste bad and he even found the experience mind-expanding.

What is your next project?
“The projects are always kind of kickin’ so ‘Hot Ones’ is wrapping its third season now, so we’ll take a little vacation but then it’s right back up to Season 4. And then we have this other show called ‘Sean in the Wild’ that I’m doing. So right now, two shows, which keeps me pretty busy.”

An impressive cast including Kelsey Grammer (“Frasier”), Matt Bomer (“White Collar”), Rosemary DeWitt (“Mad Men”) and Jennifer Beals (“Flashdance”) star in this retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last novel about a power struggle between a wunderkind studio executive (Bomer) and his boss and mentor (Grammer) in 1930s Hollywood. Oscar nominee Billy Ray (“Captain Phillips”) is a writer, director and executive producer of the series that begins streaming Friday.

Having appeared in the horror movies “Final Destination” and “Idle Hands,” Devon Sawa is on somewhat familiar turf in a supernaturally flavored new series. The actor plays a troubled detective who tries to help himself while also helping a news producer (Paula Patton, of such films as “Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol”) who knows where and when her daughter (Aria Birch) is destined to die – but not why, nor by whose hand – in “Somewhere Between,” which ABC premieres Monday, July 24. Inspired by a Korean show, the melodrama also features JR Bourne (“Teen Wolf”) as the apparent victim’s father, who is San Francisco’s district attorney.
Sawa describes his new character as “kind of a broken guy who has a past. He was a police officer who let alcohol

The filming atmosphere evidently helped the “Somewhere Between” cast and crew. “It was a long, hard stretch” in Vancouver, Sawa reports, “four months of pretty gnarly hours. It was a tough one. When I went up there, I thought, ’OK, it’s not going to be that bad. A couple of sweatshirts, some pairs of jeans, and it’ll be fine.’ Well, it was their coldest winter in a long time, and we had night shoots and rain ... but it kind of went with the series, so it was good. We just used it.”
“Growth Habits,” growth. com/habits/
Talk-show veteran Larry King is your host for this recently premiered web series that focuses on the habits of highly successful people. In a series of candid conversations with top achievers from the worlds of sports, business and entertainment, the 83-year-old radio and TV presenter delves into the minds of these folks and learns how they get motivated, overcome obstacles and set themselves up for success. In the opening episode, he speaks with Arizona Cardinals All-Pro wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald.

Maintaining that he’s “a fan of this kind of stuff,” Sawa expectedly shares a lot of screen time with Patton in “Somewhere Between,” and he’s grateful for what he deems their “unreal” chemistry. “She is a ball of magical energy,” he says. “From the first day, you just knew this was her passion project, and she was all-hands-on. It was good to have her as the captain of the ship.”
A run on The CW’s now-ended “Nikita” acclimated Sawa to series work after he’d gotten a crash course by doing one episode of another show: “I was on (CBS’) ‘NCIS: Los Angeles.’ I’d never done TV before, and I got on that set and was completely out of my element. I had no idea why they were moving so fast, and I was so unprepared for it. By the time I got to ‘Nikita,’ I realized I had to be on the ball from Take One. It takes an adjustment.”

“How It’s Destroyed,” www.youtube.com/ watch?vjvPupKZ67e0
As the title suggests, this recently premiered series on Defy Media’s AweMe YouTube channel explains how certain objects and substances are disposed of. In the opening episode, host Aaron Rice considers the means by which satellites — which can be tough to get rid of given their remote orbits — can be destroyed. The answer is fascinating.

The New York Yankees appear to have found their next superstar in right fielder Aaron Judge. The rookie slugger’s skills will be on display when Judge and the Bronx Bombers host the Tampa Bay Rays Friday, July 28, on the MLB Network and the YES Network. This game is the second of a four-game series at Yankee Stadium.
The Yankees and Boston Red Sox are both battling for the AL East lead, and even the Tampa Bay Rays are numerically alive. While the Red Sox were expected to be contenders this season this was supposed to be a rebuilding year in the Bronx. But thanks to the efforts of Judge, some timely pitching and contributions up and down the lineup the Yankees are once again prominent. Judge has been putting up big numbers and it’s not just the milestone home runs traveling long distances off of his bat. He’s among the league leaders in several categories and is a legitimate triple-crown threat.
Along with baseball, Judge also excelled in football and basketball in high School and was recruited to play tight end by Notre Dame, Stanford and UCLA. But baseball was calling and although the Oakland A’s drafted him out of high School he opted for college ball at Fresno State, where he was a three-time All-American. New York chose him late in the first round of the 2014 draft and by last summer he was seeing his first time in the big leagues. He began this season as the starting right fielder.

Amazon’s ‘The Last Tycoon’ brings F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last work to life
The Golden Age of Hollywood provides the backdrop for an atmospheric new drama series premiering this week on Amazon.
“The Last Tycoon,” based on F. Scott Fitzgerald’s last work and dropping Friday, July 28, follows the machinations of Monroe Stahr (Matt Bomer, “American Horror Story,” “White Collar”), a rising star at Brady-American Pictures who is battling his boss and mentor Pat Brady (Kelsey Grammer, “Boss,” “Frasier”) for the soul of the studio, his creative conscience constantly at odds with Pat’s concern for the bottom line.
Monroe’s pet project is a movie about his wife, movie star Minna Davis, who was killed in a fire at their Hollywood mansion two years earlier. The actress tapped to play Minna, Bess Burrows (Bailey Noble, “True Blood”), would love to get Monroe to see her as more than on-screen talent but his heart remains with his late spouse. It also has a congenital defect that could kill him at any moment.
Pat, meanwhile, is forced to entertain visits from a German government official who has issues with Brady-American movies, among them the Minna film, which tells the story of a gentile woman marrying a Jewish man – Monroe. Kill the picture, he says, or Germany will refuse to allow Brady-American films to be shown within their borders.

That’s an immediate deal-breaker for Monroe but not for Pat. In a world beset by the Great Depression and under the growing influence of Hitler’s Nazi regime, Pat concludes he can’t afford to alienate the second-largest foreign market. “You can’t have art without commerce,” he tells his outraged protege. Beautifully filmed, the series boasts excellent production values and a solid supporting cast including Lily Collins (“The English Teacher”) as Celia Brady, Pat’s
legiate daughter who has a crush on Monroe; Rosemarie DeWitt (“United States of Tara”) as Pat’s wife, Rose; Jennifer Beals (“The L Word”) as Margo Taft, an
movie star with a knack for getting what she wants; and Dominique McElligott (“House of Cards”) as Kathleen Moore, an aspiring actress and Irish
