Oklahoma’s ‘most significant’ Civil War altercation to be remembered

By Cathy Spaulding Phoenix Staff Writer
A four-hour skirmish at Honey Springs affected Oklahoma long after the Civil War, an Oklahoma historian says.
Dr. James Finck, associate American history professor at University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma, said
the Battle of Honey Springs cleared Confederate forces out of Oklahoma.
“The main effect of the War in Oklahoma was that most of the tribes sided with the Confederacy, so when the South lost, the Union government considered the Confederate tribes as traitors and breaking their treaties,” Finck said. “It allowed the government to take their land and

opened it up for the land runs. “
A service commemorating the Battle of Honey Springs will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the battlefield, about 20 miles south of Muskogee.
Finck said Honey Springs was the largest and most important Civil War altercation in the state.

Peaches take many forms at this weekend’s Porter Peach Festival.
They fill bushels and baskets, stir into smoothies, top ice cream, steam out of a huge cobbler.
The festival begins tonight with the annual Porter Peach Pageant in the high school gym. Friday festivities include the return of what could be called “Cobblerzilla,” a peach cobbler baked in a 20 1/2 by 8 1/2-foot pan. The pan, and a specially made oven, debuted in 2016 in an attempt to bake the world’s largest peach cobbler.
Kathy Smith, administrative assistant at the Wagoner County
OSU Extension, said last year’s cobbler was 2,900 pounds.
“We didn’t just beat the record, we beat it by a bunch,” Smith said.
According to www.guinnessworldrecords.com, the previous record was 2,251 pounds, set July 2015 in Ruston, La.
Festival Chairman Alan Parnell said this year’s cobbler will be a “replica” of the cobbler and will be sold by the pan or bowl at 5 p.m. Friday.
Parnell assures that a cobbler that big will be tasty.
“I ate two or three bowls of it last year,” Parnell said. “The recipe worked quite well for them.”
Saturday’s festivities include the annual Festival Parade, 11 a.m., peach auction at noon and free peaches and ice cream at

Street games at 5 p.m. include a peach pit spit, eating contest and a water balloon toss.
A 7 p.m., street dance featuring the Billy Arnett Band rounds out the day’s festivities.
Parnell said vendors throughout downtown will offer more peach-related foods.
“This is the year to see a lot of peaches,” he said.
Pat Kerr offered peach samples to Livesay Orchards visitors recently. Top varieties this year include glohaven, loring and white county peaches.
“The loring is a great-tasting peach,” Kerr said. “The glohaven is more peach-tasting. The white county also is very sweet and has the texture of a pear.”
Kerr tallied varieties people liked best — loring and white county.
Visitor Judy Stephenson said she comes to Porter all the way from

Georgia — yes, the “Peach” state.
“We like Oklahoma Porter peaches better,” Stephenson said. “We come here just to buy to Porter Peach butter. People there ask if I can get them peach butter.”
This year’s festival also includes cooler, indoor activities.
A Festival Art Exhibit and Sale will be today through Saturday at First Baptist Church Activity Center.
Exhibit sponsor Melanie Warren said the show will feature art by children, teens and adults. There also will be a focus on peach-related pieces.
“We wanted to give people more to do when they’re at the festival,” Warren said. “It’s an air conditioned event. We figured it will be somewhat popular.”

“Oklahoma does not have many battlefields compared to other states, but understanding this battle and the other ones in the state are important to what happened here,” Finck said. “It is important to preserve sites like this so Oklahomans can connect to their past and their nation’s past. To understand America, we need to understand the War. If visiting sites like Honey Springs gets people interested in history and learning more, then we need to do what we can to preserve these hallowed grounds.”
Honey Springs Battlefield Site Director Adam Lynn said the memorial service is held each year, as close as possible to the anniversary date.
He said the battle occurred July 17, 1863.
“We honor those who served, for the sacrifices they made with their well-being and their lives,” Lynn said.
Lynn said the exact number of deaths from the battle is not known.
“There were about 200 casualties,” he said, noting that nearly 6,000 Confederate and 3,000 Union soldiers fought.
“The Union had the advantage in artillery, particularly cannons,” Lynn said. “The Union had 12 cannons, and the Confederates had four.” A rain the night before the battle got the Confederate gunpowder wet, he said.
According to the Oklahoma Historical Society website, Honey Springs was on the Texas Road, a main transportation route connecting Indian Territory with Texas, Arkansas, Missouri and Kansas. Honey Springs was a stage stop on the road.
The Honey Springs battle ended by 2 p.m. with a Union victory, the website said.
Finck said the battle was unique in that it featured whites, blacks, Indians, possibly even Hispanics.
“The only Civil War battle to have this mixture,” Finck said.

Culinary experiences can be art in the right hands, and that’s part of the aim of Lynda Cowan’s cake classes at Indian Capital Technology Center.
Students have a variety of options to take cake decorating to the next level and learn all about creating cakes that are pretty as pictures and have bites bursting with moist flavor.
For almost two years, Cowan has made cake decorating a practiced success for everyone who has taken one of her courses. Hands-
on merges with YouTube videos to complete the experience for students to better understand a process or application.
“I love the people – especially watching young people learn, seeing their faces light up when they learn something new,” said Cowan. “It’s fun. We have a ball.”
Students bring baked cakes to each class and frost them.
“They learn how to bake and ice a cake, how bakeries make buttercream icing, and we work on that. The goal is to go home with a beautifully iced cake,” she said. “We laugh and have fun, and they
always do better than what they thought they would do.”

their children and grandchildren,” Cowan said.
Cooking is something families do together – at least, that what’s she learned as a child.
“My mother was a great cook and we grew up cooking. I grew up in a great big household, three of us girls – you know my sisters, Ann Lamons and Norma Harris,” she said.
As an adult, she was drawn to baking, and when Southwestern Bell closed its doors, she was looking for a job in a church, “but not all weddings are in churches.”
After attending a Wilton Cake Co. school in Tulsa, Cowan began baking cakes out of her home, which led to a business across from Jimmy Houston’s. Today, her cakes are available at a place on Horseshoe Bend Road in Park Hill.
Cake-decorating classes are popular because the students have so much fun, according to Adult Career Development Specialist Mike Meigs.
“The students bond together and have a good time. They become friends for life and continue to take the classes to build friendships,” said Meigs.
The other reason the courses in cake decorating are among the favorites offered at ICTC, said Meigs: “The cakes taste good, too.”
Everyone enjoys Cowan’s classes, he said.
“Her favorite saying is, ‘Will you look at that?’” Meigs said.
Cake classes begin next month at three area ICTC campuses. In Tahlequah, class starts Aug. 22. Muskogee classes begin Sept. 11 and Nov. 27. In Stilwell, classes begin Sept. 12.
Students will not only learn intricate designs like roses, rosebuds, leaves, borders, glazing, piping and scripts, but tips such as how to keep a cake fresh for days. The course meets for three hours per evening and is selfpaced for eight weeks. The cost is $95.
Stilwell classes include: Cake Decorating with Buttercream Frosting beginning Sept. 12; and Cake Decorating with Fondant beginning Oct. 17. Each course is for 12 hours and costs $39 plus supplies.
Cup Cakes and Cake Balls will begin Oct. 24 in Tahlequah, and Nov. 28 in Stilwell. These are each 12 hours long at a cost of $39. W hen last we saw Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen), the cunning character known to many as Littlefinger on “Game of Thrones,” he was planning to sow discord between the recently reunited Sansa Stark (Sophie Turner) and Jon Snow (Kit Harington).
That scheme may be just one of several Baelish contrives in Season 7 of the epic fantasy, which premieres Sunday, July 16, on HBO. It’s all part of his determined quest to seize the Iron Throne of Westeros, but is this complicated character driven by a lust for power or a desire for revenge against those who have wronged him?
Probably neither, says Baelish’s real-life alter ego.
“I don’t think it’s anything really nihilistic,” Gillen says. “It isn’t a quest for power and ‘I want to own and rule everything.’ As much as anything, it’s about really enjoying playing around with people and having his way with them, watching his plans unfold. He also likes the danger of it, I think. It’s about playing the game and loving it, being addicted to that, like a compulsion.”
It’s also driven by a determination never to be humiliated again like he was as a teenager, when the older Brandon Stark gravely wounded Baelish in a duel over Catelyn Stark, Sansa’s late mother.
“Brandon Stark sliced him in that duel, then wouldn’t even finish him off, which was the ultimate humiliation,” the actor
explains. “So he’s coming from a place of being humiliated way back when he actually was a sweet boy. It’s not so much a revenge on the world he seeks, he just wants to make sure that never happens again.”
Gillen also doesn’t think Baelish harbors romantic feelings for Sansa.
“Honestly, I think a lot of people have made more of that than is actually the case,” he explains. “I think both Baelish and Sansa are using each other and each is aware of what the other is doing, and they both enjoy it. As far as romance goes, it’s just not that clear cut. There are shades of that in there, and I don’t always want to explain everything. It’s whatever you make of it, but that relationship

is a bit ‘something else.’
Of course, Baelish has enjoyed watching Sansa bloom under his tutelage into the player that she is. She’s quite a strong, clever, manipulative person herself.”
The actor says he would consider reprising his role in a “Games” spinoff, but he thinks it more likely HBO is looking for a prequel.
“Also, there are so many other very interesting characters that we haven’t seen much of,” he adds. “You could do a ‘Rosencrantz and Guildenstern (Are Dead)’ thing that would be a very interesting way of opening up this world via some lesser players. But it’s a rich world and we know that people love it and have a big appetite for it.”

When a series ends, some actors can find themselves going through a bit of withdrawal when they’re forced to put down a character they created and inhabited for a number of years.
But Corey Stoll, who plays troubled hero Dr. Ephraim “Eph” Goodweather on the FX sci-fi thriller series “The Strain,” which opens its fourth and final season Sunday, July 16, probably isn’t one of them.
“Yes and no,” the 41-year-old native New Yorker says with a laugh. “I mean, it was definitely sad saying goodbye to the cast and crew. I think as we were winding down, we were looking down and realizing what a really great group of people had been assembled, and that was really a bittersweet ending. But I think the fact that the writers knew from the beginning of the season that this was the end really enabled them to write a satisfying conclusion to the character. So I felt like there wasn’t any loose ends, which is I think pretty rare in television.”
As the new season begins, the world is in darkness following the nuclear blast at the end of Season 3. The ensuing nuclear winter has liberated the strigoi and allowed them to move around during daytime and enabled the Master to establish a totalitarian regime. Most humans now work for the strigoi with the understanding that they must either collaborate or die.
Mankind appears to be down for the count but a small group is fighting back in an effort to ensure the species’ survival, among them Eph.
“He’s really kind of just in survival mode,” Stoll says. “He’s in Philadelphia. ... He is living literally
underground and trading medical advice and medical work for food. And it’s only reluctantly that he gets pulled back into any sort of organized campaign against the strigoi regime.”

Anyone with a love of beautifully photographed food would do well to check out a popular series on the First We Feast channel on YouTube.
In “Food Skills,” the emphasis is on visuals as chefs and cooks show off their awe-inspiring culinary skills in preparing favorite dishes at their restaurants in New York City. From the $150 kobe steak and the ultimate rotisserie chicken to hand-pulled noodles and squid-ink pasta, each two-to-three-minute episode gives viewers an eyeful as they pick up a few pointers on how to pull off that particular dish.
Did someone say “food porn”?
“Oh yeah, absolutely,” Chris Schonberger, editor-in-chief of First We Feast, says with pride. “That’s like the space that we’re playing in for sure ... because that’s what people want. Like we’ve seen the explosion of Instagram, which is just one big food porn jamboree, and then also the huge growth of video content across social media, especially Facebook.”
“And for us, it’s more about the culture of food and the people who make food than the home-cooking part,” he continues. “That traditionally is what we focused on so we thought, ‘How can we take that, put a lens on it but still give people just amazing visuals that will get them excited about it?’ So ‘Food Skills’

Most of the restaurants are in Manhattan and Brooklyn although a few were shot outside the five boroughs (such as a bagel episode in Montreal). And since each episode is only a few minutes, the “Food Skills” crew is able to film four to five in a day.
And the dishes truly do look luscious, such as the Detroit-style Sicilian pizza in one recent episode shot in Williamsburg – which the crew got to take home afterward, a definite fringe benefit of the job.
“We’ve seen camera people go home with enormous doggie bags that’s full of, you know, pastrami sandwich, barbecue, soba and some amazing babka or something like that,” Schonberger says. “So it’ll be a real smorgasbord by the end of the day. And then we have a great shot of a director’s dog eating a T-bone steak bone from one of the crazy steak shoots that we did, which is one of my favorite pictures.”

If a series with the title “Shooter” ups the action stakes in its second season, that comes as no surprise to its female lead.
Shantel VanSanten was directly in the line of fire as military veteran and skilled sniper Bob Lee Swagger’s (Ryan Phillippe) wife Julie as Season 1 of the USA Network drama series ended. The former “One Tree Hill” and “The Messengers” actress, who says she loves “action that engages you physically and mentally,” came back “happy and willing” for even deeper involvement in the show’s sophomore round that begins Tuesday, July 18.
While plot details have been scarce, the new “Shooter” story arc evidently brings danger right to the ranch of the Swaggers and their young daughter Mary (Lexy Kolker). “Our writers are really wonderful at constructing character arcs within the action,” VanSanten notes, “the slow burn of getting to know Julie and Bob Lee and their relationship and, by the end of Season 1, being able to see where her heart and her strength really lie.
“That’s in protecting her family and, obviously most importantly, her daughter. To see them as a family unit and a team is what I think is the core and the heartbeat of the show. That’s what they fight for, what has kept Bob Lee and so many Marines I’ve spoken to alive, seeing your family and having that moment when your kid runs into your arms. Now, the fight gets brought to our front door, rather than being on a bigger scale.” VanSanten hints that she “did a lot of gun training” to prep for the return.

Jason Bateman is a star and a director of this dark 10-episode drama series about a financial planner and his wife (Laura Linney), who suddenly relocate from suburban Chicago to a lakefront resort community in the Missouri Ozarks and must pay off a debt to a Mexican drug lord. Julia Garner (“The Americans”) also stars in this hourlong series that begins streaming Friday.

“Dislawderly,” www. youtube.com/channel/ UCLXAe6buSv2-G-EL91N6Uow
With co-stars Omar Epps, Cynthia Addai-Robinson and Eddie McClintock also back, “Shooter” – inspired by the 2007 movie starring Mark Wahlberg, an executive producer of the series, and Stephen Hunter’s novel “Point of Impact” – has notable Season 2 cast additions. Desmond Harrington (“Dexter”), Beverly D’Angelo, Harry Hamlin (“Mad Men”), William Fichtner (recently of “Mom”) and WWE’s Randy Orton appear in the new stories.
“Shooter” faced several telecast delays last year due to real-world shootings. “I respected our studio’s and our network’s decision to postpone the show out of respect for the lives lost,” VanSanten reflects. “It’s hard, because some of our art is going to mimic life, and life is going to mimic art ... but there is a time and a place, and a respectful way of doing things. We all had faith, and we knew the story we were telling was an important one.”
Before she began “Shooter,” VanSanten played police detective Patty Spivot on The CW’s ‘The Flash.“ She says she remains very open to returning to that adventure if the producers can fit her in.
“I haven’t had a conversation with them,” she allows, “but what’s cool is that with our shooting schedule now, I am free. They start in July and we finish in July, so if they wanted to bring me back, I’ll shout from the rooftops that I would love nothing more than to go and reprise that role.”
From New Zealand comes this seven-part comedy series that follows the misadventures of Audrey (series creator Georgia-Jane Rippin), a hapless student who blunders her way through the highly competitive world of law school at Auckland University. Much of the comedy in the five-minute episodes is cringe-worthy but also offers a few genuine belly laughs along the way.

“TEMP(orary),” whohaha.com/series/temporary/
This new four-part scripted series from Cosmopolitan and the female-centric comedy site WhoHaHa tells the story of Sam and Lexi (series co-creators Cyrina Fiallo and Chrissie Fit), co-dependent millennial childhood pals struggling to find their place in the world while working as temps. The strong cast also includes Brittany Snow (“Pitch Perfect”), Elizabeth Henstridge (“Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.”), Utkarsh Ambudkar (“The Mindy Project”) and Dana Powell (“Modern Family”).

The 146th Open Championship, commonly referred to as The British Open, gets underway Thursday on GOLF from Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, Merseyside, near Liverpool, England where Swedish golfer Henrik Stenson hopes to defend his title. This is the third Major on the 2017 PGA Tour.
Stenson had a brilliant and record-setting tournament last year, which took place at the Royal Troon Golf Club in Scotland. He entered the final round tied with Phil Mickelson, but pulled away with a three shot lead, making him the only male Swede to win a Major. Actually, Stenson had a very successful summer in 2016. He followed up his Major title with a Silver Medal at the Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, losing to Justin Rose by two stokes.
Stenson, who now lives in Orlando, Florida, turned pro in 1998 and joined the PGA Tour in 2007. Last year’s Open Championship is his only Major title. His best finishes in recent years include being tied for third at the PGA
Championship in 2014 and tied for fourth at the U.S. Open that same year. He has yet to make the cut at a Major this year, which includes the Masters and the U.S. Open.
The Open Championship was last played at Royal Birkdale in 2008 when Ireland’s Pádraig Harrington won his second consecutive Major while Stenson finished tied for third. Repeating Harrington’s streak would be something Stenson would surely like to accomplish.

Marty Byrde is a man living the American dream. Or so it would seem.
As played by Jason Bateman (“Arrested Development,” “Up in the Air”) on the addictive new Netflix drama “Ozark,” which begins streaming Friday, July 21, he’s a successful Chicago financial adviser living life in a nice house in the suburbs with wife Wendy (Laura Linney, “The Big C,” “Sully”) and their teenage children Charlotte (Sofia Hublitz, “Louie”) and Jonah (Skylar Gaertner, “The Americans”).
But all is far from well with the Byrdes. It turns out Marty’s firm has for years been laundering money for Del (Esai Morales, “La Bamba,” “Chicago P.D.”), head of the secondlargest drug cartel in Mexico, and he comes looking for Marty and his partner Bruce (Josh Randall, “Ed”) when $5 million of it apparently has gone missing. And stay-at-home mom Wendy is far from happy in her marriage, engaging in twice-aweek trysts with downtown lawyer Gary (Bruce Altman, “Glengarry Glen Ross”).
But Del is even unhappier. In the opening episode, he confronts Marty, Bruce and others about the money and learns the grand total stolen
was closer to $8 million. After gunfire leaves several dead, Marty begs for his life, offering to launder $500 million of the cartel’s cash over five years in a great land investment in Missouri’s Lake of the Ozarks, which has “more shoreline than the coast of California,” Marty explains. Del agrees and spares his life but tells Marty he still wants his $8 million. So Marty liquidates all his assets, gets his money, closes his firm and abruptly uproots his confused and very unhappy family for their new rural home, which Wendy describes as a place “where camouflage is a primary color.”
Clearly, the Byrdes are fish out of water here, city slickers forced to hole up in a decrepit motel while they find a home and live a spartan existence now that they have little money. It is here that the drama begins.
Linney and Jason Bateman Answers:
Bateman, who pulls triple duty here as star, director and executive producer, creates a vivid character in Marty, a crafty guy who despite his success drives a 10-year-old car and shows no lack of candor, sometimes to his own detriment. And Linney as the unfaithful and frightened Wendy shows why she’s a three-time Oscar nominee.
