An amnesiac spy seeks her identity in the dark Starz thriller ‘The Rook’

A woman wakes up in the rain next to London’s Millennium Bridge with no memor y of how she got there or why there are a slew of latex-gloved corpses surrounding her.

All she knows is something terrible has happened and people are tr ying to harm her.

The woman’s name is Myfanwy and as played by Emma Greenwell (“Shameless,” “ The Path”) in the Starz psychological spy thriller “ The Rook,” premiering Sunday, June 30, she comes to discover that she’s a high-ranking operative for the Checquy, a Secret Ser vice-like British agency that protects those with supernatural powers from the dangerous world of high-dollar trafficking. As bits of her memor y return, she starts to uncover the truth about her past and her own previously dormant abilities, thus forcing her into a choice of rever ting to what she was or embarking on a new beginning.

Greenwell, a newcomer to science fiction, embraced the chance to build from the ground up a character who has no identity and no memor y, filling in the blanks of her personality as filming progressed. But the British actress admits that also came with challenges.

“I tried not to pay attention to all the jargon and I really wanted to discover things as they happened,” she explains. “And so, yeah, it was bizarre. It definitely got very confusing toward the end and we were shooting very much out of sequence.

“We were shooting episodes three, five, seven and six all at once and jumping around, and I was

The role also afforded Greenwell the chance to tr y her hand at action, another genre to which she is a stranger Some scenes didn’t go so well, such as in the opening sequence of Sunday’s premiere where she trips over one of the bodies and fractures her wrist.

“I had warned them,” Greenwell says with a laugh. “I was like, ‘I’m very accident-prone’ and I think they thought I was being dramatic.”

In another, the crew disguised a stunt double as Greenwell to elicit a genuinely shocked reaction from a group of teenage extras when the woman fell from a garage roof

“One girl lost it,” Greenwell says. “She was like freaking out because she’d thought I’d actually fallen off the roof because they hadn’t seen us shoot it previously They just came in for that. Yeah, it was pretty good. Kind of mean but also great footage. Honest reactions.”

Created by Lisa Zwerling (“ When We Rise”) and Kar yn Usher (“Prison Break”), “ The Rook” has a talented cast that also includes Joely Richardson (“ The Tudors”), Adrian Lester (“ Trauma”), Olivia Munn (“ The Newsroom”), Ronan Rafter y (“ The Terror”) and Jon Fletcher (“Genius”).

for more in Season 4 of ‘Man v. Food’

Just like an athlete before a big competition, Casey Webb of “Man v. Food” does his prep work.

While on the road, the host of the Cooking Channel series makes sure he eats well, gets plenty of rest and tries to get in his exercise. And if he happens to be taking on a challenge that entails downing uber-hot peppers, well, guess what gets added to his training regimen.

“I have an arsenal of dried chilis in my apartment as we speak ...,” he explains, “So it’s really about prepping your system. I travel with ghost chilis and I incorporate it into my diet just so it’s in my body so it’s not a shock to my system. But it doesn’t change how it affects your palate. It’s going to burn. You know, it’s hot (but) these are little things that help.”

The new season gets going Tuesday, July 2, and finds Webb traveling to locations across the country to check out the fare in places such as Wisconsin, Ohio, Alaska and Texas and take on epic challenges such as a 30-pound bagel sandwich, outsized portions of barbecue and a plate of ghost chili pepper tacos.

In the season opener, he goes to Sacramento, Calif., where he drops in on a family-run Chinese restaurant, dines on sushi at a renowned Japanese concern and visits an eatery called the Waffle Experience, where he got to try his hand at making the breakfast cakes.

“They do it in a French style,” Webb notes, “ so it’s more like bread than it is an actual waffle as we know it in America, so it really holds up well so they can make these really hearty sandwiches.”

“(The challenge) was a single slice of pizza and each bite of the pizza got hotter and hotter and hotter and hotter,” Webb explains. “So it was a very small bite at the very beginning that was jalapeno that went all the way up to ghost chili, scorpion and – yeah, it was pretty hot.”

And when you’re talking Scoville unit heat in the millions, no amount of liquid refreshment is going to knock down that fire.

“You know, it’s like an oil fire,” Webb says. “You don’t want to throw water on an oil fire, it just spreads it out. ... I’ve taken to drink iced tea because it helps very little but it’s somehow satisfying and it’s a little better than water I mean, it’s 95 percent water but that little bit of tea cuts the heat just for a hot second. When you’re getting into increasingly hot stuff like 1.5, two million Scoville units any little bit helps.”
