Quinto convincing as an evil immor tal in AMC’s ‘NOS4A2’

Fans of Zachary Quinto will find him in a character light years away from Spock in a series premiering this week on AMC.

In “NOS4A2,” a supernatural horror series debuting Sunday, June 2, the 42-year-old “Star Trek” actor is virtually unrecognizable under heavy prosthetics and makeup as shriveled, old Charlie Manx, an evil immortal who lures children into his antique car full of wrapped presents, feeds off their souls and deposits the remains at Christmasland, a twisted place of his imagination where it’s Christmas every day and unhappiness is outlawed.

Meanwhile, New Hampshire teen Vic McQueen (Ashleigh Cummings, “Miss Fisher’s Murder Mysteries”), a product of an unhappy home life, is just discovering her supernatural ability to find lost things – including, presumably, the souls of Manx’s young victims.

“I had been looking for a project and a character that would give me the opportunity to really transform and into whom I could disappear,” Quinto explained to a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif “So that was one of the aspects of this experience that was really magnetizing for me.

“I was a little resistant to be honest at first about the horror nature of the show and the

kind of archetypal villain that I’d be playing. But as I read the scripts ... it seemed to me that there was a real depth and an emotional grounding in these characters, and an incredible collaborative spirit around the project itself And so, those things – combined with this opportunity to really dive into who this immortal character was – made it really irresistible for me in the end.”

The opening scene gives a good idea what to expect. A late-night intruder rousts a couple and a young son from sleep The boy runs from the house to find Manx parked out front in his giftfilled auto beckoning him to come with him. Mom, who was injected with an unknown drug, pursues until she slows and falls. And Charlie drives away with the boy, his license plate reading ‘NOS4A2.’

“He manipulates and exploits the vulnerabilities of these children,” Quinto says, “because he himself was abused and neglected and exploited in horrible ways as a child, which you learn through the book and through the companion graphic novel to ‘NOS4A2’ called ‘ The Wraith,’ which really dives in-depth into Charlie Manx’s backstor y. And so, understanding the origins of trauma and how if it goes unexamined and unprocessed, it can lead to this kind of warped and twisted manipulation, is really interesting.”

‘Man Fire Food’ host Mooking has a burning passion for barbecue

Ask Roger Mooking of “Man Fire Food” what initially inspired his love of barbecue and he will a surprisingly candid answer

“I used to love fire and playing with fire and luckily I had no major accidents with fire,” he says with a laugh. “... You know, I think that’s just a primal human instinct to be enamored with the and being around it. ... I just had this affinity with it growing up and when I started to cook and kind of went through regular traditional restaurants and kitchens and catering companies and hotels, you’ kind of like yearning to see like what else can we with cooking and then the live fire thing, I kind reached back to my history of just loving fire and started diving into that. And next thing you kno I’m traveling around eating all this fire-cooked food.

Now in its eighth season Wednesdays on Cooking Channel, the series finds Mooking, an accomplished chef, restaurateur, musician and cookbook author traveling the country searching for more people cook with fire, the contraptions they use and the dishes they create with them. This season’s episodes focus more on global cuisines and take Mooking such locales as New Orleans, Bakersfield, Calif., stops throughout Texas to see how people are putting their own spins on international foods through barbecue.

That was evident in last week’s episode in Houston, where a Japanese favorite got a Texas touch.

“What we did is we smoked a brisket and we made some sushi from nigiri with smoked brisket

of it as well. So again, really simple and you’d think that somebody would have done that before because a lot of pho comes with brisket but this smoked thing just added a whole other layer to it and it was a real Texas-style brisket.”

“So it was the Texas thing and the Vietnamese thing all coming together with an old family recipe and it just made sense,” he continues, “And it was a beautiful thing.”

The third leg of thoroughbred racing’s triple crown concludes with the 151st Belmont Stakes from Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. The 1.5-mile track, or 12 furlongs, adds an additional quarter-mile compared to the Kentucky Derby and 3/8-mile to that of Preakness track. That makes all the difference in the world. Kentucky Derby winner Country Home did not race in the Preakness Stakes, so there will be no Triple Crown winner in 2019.
