G Fest brings together an eclectic group of musicians

Three-night festival to bring fans of old favorites and rising stars

Muskogee’s G Fest music festival plans to bring old favorites and new fascinations to music lovers with its nightly headliners.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited, NEEDTOBREATHE, and Blackberry Smoke will bring a mix of swamp rock, modern rock and southern rock to fans each night of the three-night festival held at Love-Hatbox Sports Complex from Thursday through Saturday.

Creedence Clearwater Revisited highlights the last night of the second annual festival. On Saturday night, two original CCR members Doug “Cosmo” Clifford and Stu Cook, along with Kurt Griffey, Dan McGuinness and Steve Gunner, plan to bring back memories for fans of the brand of rock CCR has been known for since the ‘60s.

Clifford said it’s nice to be a part of the foundation of G Fest, and the group is always supportive of summer shows and festivals, but one late musician is much on his mind as he prepares for the concert.

“One thing that I’m going to be looking out for is the ghost of Merle

— I’m sure he’ll be part of it,” Clifford said. “I know Merle liked our band, and we certainly like his music. It will be fun knowing the history. ‘Okie from Muskogee’ is a classic, and we have

some classics of our own. We’re going to be laying them out there.”

G Fest brand creating traction

Second year of festival building on inaugural success

G Fest 2017 should be building on last year’s inaugural music festival with a number of enhancements to make the experience more enjoyable and seamless for the thousands expected to attend.

Jim Blair, festival founder and executive director of the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, said more misting stations, an expanded lineup of vendors and an easier flow of traffic should all enhance the festival experience.

“It’s unlikely we’ll have the abnormal heat like we did last year — that was the hottest heat index of the year,” he said. “But we want to be ready for whatever heat we have.”

A new twist this year is a Friday night Leon Russell tribute in the Hangar.

“That will have a lot of Leon’s people involved that — people that have worked with him over the last 40 or 50 years,” Blair said.

“On Saturday, we’re adding a late night EDM party. That stands for electronic dance music, which is something that should appeal to the younger crowd,” Blair said.

That dance party is slated to start about 11:30 p.m. and continue until about 2 a.m. Sunday.

“Muskogee has an incredible music history that goes back decades,” Blair said. “For years, this was a main stop for acts traveling between Dallas and Kansas

City of Muskogee crews were working last week on a tower that will hold a beacon to be used during G Fest Muskogee to help draw attention to the music festival site at Love-Hatbox Sports Complex. The three-day music festival runs Thursday through Saturday.

City and this was a hotbed of music activity.”

That history along with the location of OMHOF in Muskogee combined to make the genesis for what was to become G Fest Muskogee.

“We’ve been dreaming this up for years,” Blair said.

“Something like this does not happen without the support of the city,” he said. “One of the things that happened about two years ago, that we felt was important, was that we wanted to make sure we were making a good positive first impression.”

val together, Blair said. That was why organizers paid so much attention to detail in the 2016 festival to get professionals together with experience in putting on major productions like music festivals.

“So, even though last year was our first one, there were not any novices out here in the operations”

“People that run our backstage — that’s what they do every week,” he said. “People that run our ticketing, that’s what they do for a living. People that run our food and beverages, that’s what they do.”

That cannot happen by haphazardly putting a festi-

vehicle operations have had experience in that area.

“So, even though last year was our first one, there were not any novices out here in the operations,” he said.

A lot of research on the part of organizers went into pulling together a network of providers with the variety of experiences needed to pull off a major music festival.

Blair said the first year’s event finished without a profit, and this year’s event likely will not either.

will create buzz among music goers and in the music industry.

Even after one year, the reputation of G Fest Muskogee has gotten national attention of promoters, musicians and people in the entertainment business, he said.

“I was in Nashville in September, and people there knew about G Fest”

“It takes three to five years to create a festival that turns a profit,” he said. “But even though we operate with a loss, there is still a huge economic impact locally.”

But Blair stresses the building process of creating a solid foundation with a festival environment that

“I was in Nashville in September, and people there knew about G Fest,” Blair said. “We’ve had calls over the past year from coast-to-coast from people wanting to know how to get involved because they’ve heard about it.”

There is an intangible value to the community of the G Fest brand.

“And that’s hard for the community to grasp, but it’s happening,” Blair said.

long-standing hit “Okie from Muskogee” in 1969, died April 6, 2016, just two months before he was set to headline the inaugural G Fest music festival in Muskogee.

Creedence Clearwater

Revisited plans to bring the audience to its feet with such hits as “Proud Mary,” “Down on the Corner” and “Bad Moon Rising.”

“Those are all pretty popular, but every song we play is a hit,” Clifford said. “For example, ‘Lodi’ was a hit, but a lot of people don’t recognize it like they do ‘Proud Mary.’ It makes it fun for the crowd because they think, ‘Oh, I didn’t know they did that one!’ or ‘I forgot they did that one,’ so they enjoy it when we play it.”

The group plans to play more than 20 songs Saturday night, giving guitarist Kurt Griffey a chance to show off, he said.

“He’s really good. He’s a young gun,” Clifford said. “He takes command of the stage and people just love him.”

Friday’s headliner brings a sound oft-described as rock, inspirational, religious and pop — depending on the listener — but as a GRAMMY-nominated rock group hailing from South Carolina,

NEEDTOBREATHE

promises to wow old and new fans.

Their latest album, “HARD LOVE,” debuted in summer 2016 at #1 on the Billboard 200 and spawned the hit single “Brother (featuring Gavin DeGraw),” which earned them their first GRAMMY nomination and a pair of Billboard Music Award nominations, according to the G Fest website. Brothers Bear Rinehart and Bo Rinehart, both on vocals and guitar, Seth Bolt on vocals and bass, and Josh Lovelace on keys and vocals make up the group, which has been touring across the country for the last two years, selling out shows in Los Angeles, Nashville, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and more.

Thursday night’s headliner, who kicks off the three-day music festival, is “arena-ready rock ‘n’ roll juggernauts” Blackberry Smoke, the G Fest website states.

Blackberry Smoke is well known for its expansion of the southern rock tradition since the group’s formation in 2000. They’ve been playing more than 250 shows a year and along the way have “found time to record a handful of independent releases, including the albums ‘Bad Luck Ain’t No Crime,’ ‘Little Piece of Dixie’ and The ‘Whippoorwill.’”

Residents, visitors encouraged to spend Saturdays in downtown Tahlequah

Summer of Saturdays celebration offers specials at boutiques and restaurants through Sept. 30

Downtown Tahlequah is celebrating the season with a Summer of Saturdays, and community members and visitors are invited to discover the specials offered at unique boutiques and restaurants.

“Every store will be running specials, and you can check them out on the Downtown Tahlequah Facebook

Page,” said Drew Haley, Main Street director.

“Every store will be running specials, and you can check them out on the Downtown Tahlequah Facebook Page”

Shoppers can look online before planning where to shop, as businesses are able to post their specials for each Saturday on the Facebook Page to show what is going on downtown, Haley said.

Summer of Saturdays started in April and will end Sept. 30.

“It’s a retail event to encourage people to shop downtown and attend the Farmers’ Market, which is open every Saturday under the new pavilion on Morgan Street,” he said.

Haley encourages people to shop the Farmers’ Market, then check out downtown businesses, both favorites and perhaps a new one not yet discovered. This could lead to staying downtown for lunch or dinner, and then enjoying some live music or a River City Players show.

“I love the fresh produce, local baked goods and the unity,” said Smith.

It’s the first year for Gibson to be at the Farmers’’ Market in Tahlequah. She sold at the Cherry Street Market in Tulsa last year.

“It’s very casual and feels more intimate. Here are babies and music, and it’s nice to see friends and family,” said Gibson, bagging up her friends’ purchases.

Those needing some tools or supplies to cook up their market finds can head to Cook’s Companion & More on Muskogee Avenue. There it also is Sample Saturday, said store manager Diana Gordineer.

“Customers can try out one of our gourmet food items, such as jams, jellies, pickles, coffees and more. We’re always getting in new items,” Gordineer said.

Down the street at Meigs Jewelry, everyone can sign up for the drawing for a Kendra Scott necklace. Plus, everyone registered is entered in an end-of-summer drawing.

“Anybody who walks in the door gets to register for a Kendra Scott Elisa necklace, their most popular necklace,” said Todd Mutzig, owner and current Chamber of Commerce president.

The winner can choose the color of necklace they prefer.

“We wanted to do something fun for people to come in on Saturdays and to encourage tourists on the river to come in town and go store to store to make it a really festive atmosphere,” Mutzig said.

Women wrestlers positively ‘GLOW’ in new comedy series

B efore there was WWE Divas or the Exotic Ladies of Wrestling, there was “GLOW,” otherwise known as the “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling.” A new comedy series dropping on Netflix this week hearkens back to the days of that 1980s syndicated TV series and the women who starred in it.

“GLOW,” which begins streaming Friday, June 23, tells the fictional story of Ruth Wilder (Alison Brie, “Community,” “Mad Men”), a struggling, outof-work Los Angeles actress who gets one last chance at stardom as one of the spandex-clad faux competitors on that 1986-89 series. Also among the 14 in the cast is Debbie Eagan (Betty Gilpin, “Masters of Sex,” “American Gods”), a

former soap actress whose seemingly idyllic life as a wife and mother comes to a screeching halt thanks to a rude surprise. In leading this cast of Hollywood misfits, washed-up director Sam Sylvia (Marc Maron, “Maron,” Girls“) sees his own shot at redemption.

The series has an impressive pedigree, counting showrunners Liz Flahive (“Homeland,” “Nurse Jackie”) and Carly Mensch (“Nurse Jackie,” “Orange Is the New Black”) and executive producers Jenji Kohan and Tara Herrmann (“Orange Is the New Black”) among its creative forces.

To bone up on the wrestling aspect of their roles, Brie, Gilpin and the other actresses underwent about a month of training with professional wrestler

Chavo Guerrero Jr., learning the various moves and how to land without getting hurt.

“It was a big part of what the show was for all of us, and a major challenge,” Brie says, “and at the same time one of the most fun aspects of doing this show and a very empowering aspect of the show. It really bonded us as a cast, the 14 women who got to meet each other a month before shooting and do this thing together, which we were all so vulnerable and it was a very level playing field in that none of us had any experience doing, except for one woman.

“Kia Stevens is a pro wrestler and also an actress on our show,” she continues, “and she became invaluable in imparting

some of her wrestling knowledge on us and just really helping to nurture us throughout the process.”

Guerrero was also able to help the actresses with the mental aspect of their roles, from wrestling philosophy and committing to a character to the do’s and don’ts of storylines.

“I realized how much of wrestling is storydependent, characterdependent,” Gilpin says.

“That felt very freeing for me because coming up with a character is something I know how to do and something as actors we all knew how to do. I didn’t realize how much of wrestling is sort of storydriven and it is very much like a soap opera. It’s like ‘All My Children’ in the Coliseum.”

Ask Patrick Fabian if he gets recognized more often in public as a result of the popularity of his Monday AMC dramedy “Better Call Saul” and you’ll get a laugh.

“I do. I always kind of have,” the 52-year-old Pittsburgh-area native says. “One, because I kind of look like that guy that went to high school with you, in a way. And then also because I’ve sort of littered people’s televisions for the last 20 years.”

Indeed, a look at Fabian’s IMDb page reveals a working actor whose career stretches back to the early ‘90s, from roles in series such as “Beverly Hills, 90210” and “Saved by the Bell: The College Years” to parts in current shows such as “Scandal,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Elementary” and of course, his regular gig as HHM law partner Howard Hamlin in “Saul” (which has its third season finale this Monday, June 19).

For Fabian, playing the driven Howard has turned out to be a dream job, not only because of the fine writing on the series and the fact that he’s working for two of the industry’s most respected executive producers in Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould, but also because it puts him into some mighty fine threads.

by all the fun, and Jennifer Bryan’s like, ‘I’m sorry, your shirts aren’t ready yet.’ And I immediately go to the actor’s self-deprecation, like, ‘Well of course my shirts aren’t ready. I’m only number five on the call sheet. They going to kill me anyways. I guess Sears wasn’t open on Sunday.’ You know?

“And the next part of her sentence was, ‘They’re finished selling them in Genoa.’ ” he says. “They’re hand-made in Italy.”

“(Costume designer) Jennifer Bryan puts me in these beautiful suits which I am pretty sure cost more than my salary on the show,” he says. “Honest to God, if you put yourself in one you’d be like, ‘Oh, I’m never taking this off.’ ”

“I remember this – this is such an actor thing – it’s the beginning of the whole show,” he continues, “and ... you’re getting fitted and all this stuff and you’re half paying attention. You’re excited, you’re blinded

Determining who’s who on Food Network’s ‘Bakers vs. Fakers’

Everyone has their own system for detecting bull.

For some, it could be an inability of someone to look you in the eye. For others, it’s a stammer. For still others, body language tells the tale.

For Lorraine Pascale, host of “Bakers vs. Fakers,” now in its second season Wednesdays on Food Network, how a contestant goes about their work is the key to distinguishing the professional baker from the poser.

“It’s quite difficult with baking,” she explains, “because sometimes the end result comes out and maybe a baker just had a bad day. But I think for me, it’s the techniques that you see. I look at the techniques: how they move around the kitchen, how they’re selecting all the ingredients, how they fill a piping bag, how they use a piping bag. You know, if they’re sautéing some apples in a pan, how do they do it? I think you can tell a lot by the techniques people are using.”

In each episode of the hourlong series, four competitors do battle through two rounds of culinary challenges, where they must produce desserts that impress Pascale and a rotating panel of judges that include Sunny Anderson, Amanda Freitag, Alex Guarnaschelli, Daphne Oz, Damaris Phillips and Aarti Sequeira. After a final winner is determined, they are unmasked as the baker or the faker.

Often in competition, pressure can separate the wheat from the chaff but according to Pascale, even that is not a reliable indicator here.

“People who are fakers may have really highpowered jobs and be used to the pressure,” she says.

“So you know, it could be a tell but sometimes it isn’t. Or you might have a mom who is not a baker, maybe she’s been cooking at home for years, for family baking at home, and she’s used to the pressures of having lots of kids and the phone ringing all the time, so she’s great under pressure. And sometimes you get a very good baker who’s not that good under the pressure, too. So it’s not as easy as we think.”

So in the end, says Pascale, “you go with your gut.”

‘The Mist’ settles on Spike TV

Net Picks

Secrets, a brutal crime and a deadly fog – they’re the ingredients for terror in small-town Maine in a new series premiering this week on Spike TV.

In “The Mist,” based on a story by horrormeister Stephen King and debuting Thursday, June 22, the sleepy burg of Bridgeville is rocked when young Alex Copeland (Gus Birney, “This Is Nowhere”) is sexually assaulted, allegedly by her high school’s football star Jay Heisel (Australian newcomer Luke Cosgrove), who also happens to the son of the town’s alpha dog sheriff, Connor Heisel (Darren Pettie, “Mad Men”).

As the fallout from the crime sends shockwaves through the town, it also places further stresses and strains on the already-shaky marriage of Alex’s parents, Kevin (Morgan Spector, “Boardwalk Empire”) and Eve (Alyssa Sutherland, “Vikings”). Eve, a former wild child still trying to live down her reputation, often clashed with Kevin over what she feels is his permissive attitude toward Alex’s upbringing, which she thinks is partially to blame for what happened to her. And the people in town aren’t so sure Alex is an innocent party, either.

“GLOW,” www.netflix.com/title/80114988

Pro wrestling fans of a certain age will remember the “Gorgeous Ladies of Wrestling,” a 1986-89 syndicated series featuring women wrestlers portraying heroines or villains in various storylines. This new comedy-drama hearkens back to those days, starring Alison Brie (“Community”) and Betty Gilpin (“Masters of Sex”) as two Los Angeles actresses in need of jobs who wind up as cast members on that show.

Into the town settles an eerie, dense mist that poses more danger than just hazardous driving.

In the opening episode, that can mean death at the hands of what appear to be cannibalistic insects, no electricity and no cell service, among other woes. The smart ones stay indoors with the windows and doors shut.

As Bridgeville goes into crisis mode, secrets are exposed, relationships are threatened and the rules of society begin to break down. And people’s true natures – for better and worse – emerge.

On the apparent better side is Kevin, the reasoned, moral man who refuses to give in to the prejudice and anger he sees around him.

“He’s the good, civilized man,” says the actor who portrays him, Spector, “and I think part of what Christian (Torpe, the showrunner) was interested in certainly was, OK, if you have somebody whose beliefs have probably been relatively unchallenged, whose convictions, while maybe he would regard them as deeply held, have never really been put to the test – what happens when circumstances put that man’s convictions to the test?

“Going Cambo,” www.go90.com

This new unscripted series follows the adventures of Cambo, a self-taught survivalist who grew up learning how to live off the land in his native Alabama while other kids his age were playing video games. In each episode, he gives anyone who volunteers the chance to accompany him on a trek into the wild, armed only with the clothes they’re wearing and Cambo’s trusty Slumerican buck knife.

“The possibility of exploring that ...,” he continues, “I find that really fascinating, that idea of exploring, OK, at what point do you let go of your scruples in order to survive or in order to protect those you truly love?”

Eve has been very protective of Alex all along, raising her under a strict set of rules in the hopes of avoiding the mistakes of her own youth, which include a teenage pregnancy. This places her in direct opposition to Kevin, who tends to relax the rules a bit and lets her do things like attend the party where she was assaulted.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg for this troubled couple, says Sutherland, the Australian actress who plays Eve.

“I think there are some cracks,” she says, “and what happens to their daughter really magnifies what’s going on between the two of them and the history is also explored over this season, of their relationship. You get to find out more about the past, which is interesting stuff. So we start out with the family kind of in turmoil and then all hell breaks loose. (And the question becomes) how are these people going to survive and what they’re willing to do to survive. And will they come back together, will they not?”

“Play by Play,” www.go90.com

Narrated by a present sportcaster who looks back on his childhood in the ’90s, this scripted comedy series follows the adventures of Pete Hickey (Reid Miller), a freshman kicker on his Chicago Catholic high school’s football team. With the help of his best friend and fellow benchwarmer Rocco (Max Amor) and secret crush Alex (Ellee Jo Trowbridge), he learns how to negotiate the many ups and downs of high school.

Kurt Busch looks to master Michigan

Kurt Busch has had some success in June in recent years. His sole victory in 2016 was the Pocono 400, and one of the two races he won in 2015 was the FireKeepers Casino 400 at Michigan International Speedway, where he’ll return along with the rest of NASCAR’s top drivers when the FireKeepers Casino 400 airs Sunday on FS1.

Busch’s luck began early this season as he drove to victory at the Daytona 500, accomplishing a feat that all drivers hope for at some point in their career. He followed that up a week later with a seventh- place finish at Atlanta, and at the time of this writing, had five top-ten finishes thus far in the 2017 season.

Kurt Busch is the older brother of Kyle Busch. Both grew up in Las Vegas, with Kyle following in his older brother’s footsteps. Kurt has driven for a number of racing teams since coming on the scene with Roush Racing in 2000, and was a Rookie of the Year runner-up in 2001. His best years have been with Roush, including his Cup championship in 2004. He signed with Stewart-Haas Racing in 2013.

The team switched manufacturers to Ford prior to the season and Busch responded with his Daytona 500 victory. Ford has not represented a Cup champion since Busch’s 2004 title. After two years of finishing in the Top 10 at season’s end, Busch was ranked 15th at the time of this writing, and has some catching up to do in order to contend for the post-season.

Fear the Walking Dead

As the core characters fans have grown to know best continue their fight to stay connected under the most dire circumstances imaginable, the new episode “100” introduces a mysterious character searching for a defining purpose, who becomes tied to the struggle over a resource that is becoming a precious commodity in the post-apocalypse world. Kim Dickens, Cliff Curtis and Frank Dillane star.

MONDAY

8 p.m. on KQCW

Whose Line Is It Anyway?

The culinary competition gets its fourth American season, as twelve amateur cooks set out to flour — er, flower — in the kitchen while their skills are assessed by returning judges Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood. The contestants’ first mission will be a piece of “Cake,” literally if not otherwise, as they tackle challenges that incorporate sponge and chocolate elements. Mel Giedroyc and Sue Perkins are back as hosts.

As Detective Clive Babineaux on “iZombie,” actor Malcolm Goodwin has proven he knows his way around a joke, whether he’s hitting it himself or setting up a gag for a scene partner. How is he, though, when he’s working without a script — or a net? This new episode finds the talented Goodwin joining improv aces Ryan Stiles, Wayne Brady, Colin Mochrie and special guest comic Gary Anthony Williams for some off-the-cuff comedy. Aisha Tyler hosts.

TUESDAY

8 p.m. on KQCW iZombie

Something Liv (Rose McIver) eats — namely the brains of someone from Ravi’s (Rahul Kohli) past — disagrees with her in “Looking for Mr. Goodbrain, Part 1,” the first of a two-part season finale. She starts to get some decidedly not-safe-forwork visions of Ravi, along with the desire to sleep with every dude in Seattle. Elsewhere, Major (Robert Buckley) has a huge decision to make. David Anders, Malcolm Goodwin and Aly Michalka also star.

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH

Little Big Shots: Forever Young Youngsters have had their turns, and now, it’s time for remarkable talents from the opposite end of the age spectrum to show their stuff. As this spinoff premieres, host Steve Harvey and fellow executive producer Ellen DeGeneres showcase senior citizens and their special entertainment skills ... be those singing, dancing or something much more unexpected. Comedy legend Betty White and gospel singer Shirley Caesar help get the show off to its start here.

‘HOT ONES’ PROVES TO BE THE CATALYST FOR COOL CONVERSATION

“Hot

Ones” host Sean Evans Answers:

In the category of cuisine that’s based on a dare, we present the humble hot wing.

It’s the catalyst for many a wing-eating contest, the inspiration for hundreds if not thousands of tear-inducing hot sauces and it’s also at the center of a talk show now in its third season on the First We Feast YouTube channel.

In each episode of “Hot Ones,” host, writer and co-creator Sean Evans sits down with a celebrity guest over plates of chicken wings (with an array of progressively hotter sauces) and interviews them as they eat. And what he’s found over three seasons of doing the show is there is nothing like a hot wing to lower inhibitions and break the conversational ice.

“I think that what it does is it stuns people ...,” Evans explains. “You start eating and these sauces hit you and for a lot of these celebrities, the hottest thing they’ve ever had in their life is the Zombie Apocalypse hot sauce or ‘Da Bomb hot sauce. ... You know, it’s like they’ve never really experienced anything like that. And I think that there’s a realization that, ‘Wow, this is very real.’ ”

“Some of those sauces are like outrageous novelty hot sauces that I think were just made as pranks,” he continues. “But you have these celebrities eating these things that have like no real use in food. They’re just made to, in our case, torture celebrities, and when they get hit, they’re kind of like, ‘Whoa! This is real. I’m stuck on this show.’ We have you kind of stuck there, the lights are on you, the cameras are rolling and there’s nowhere to run. So you have like nothing to do but kind of just survive.”

And some do better than others. While guests such as rappers Coolio, Danny Brown and Riff Raff struggled with the hot stuff and wound up in the facilities (or worse), others such as comedian Russell Brand, actor/filmmaker Dax Shepard and astrophysicist Neil DeGrasse Tyson proved they had game, matching Evans wing for wing.

And then there were folks like Padma Lakshmi and Guy Fieri, who downed their plates like the seasoned food professionals that they are.

“That’s because there’s nothing that’s going to shock them,” Evans says. “They’re like a boxer that’s been in the ring. They’ve been punched in the face before. A lot of these people have never been punched before, so that’s why we get the reactions we get.”
