Jared Harris stars in the miniseries “Chernobyl,” premiering Monday on HBO

s ‘Chernobyl’ paints a picture of nuclear devastation and heroism

Those who support nuclear power may have second thoughts after watching “Chernobyl.”

Premiering Monday, May 6, on HBO, the five-part dramatic miniseries recalls the events surrounding the April 26, 1986, explosion at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant in the Ukraine that resulted in 28 immediate deaths (and an unknown number in the ensuing years) as well as the release of radioactive material across the Soviet Union and as far as Scandinavia and Western Europe.

But as bad as it was it could have been much worse were it not for the actions of scientists, government officials, plant workers and others who risked their own careers, lives and health to prevent the fallout from spreading further west.

Among them are nuclear physicist Valer y Legasov (Jared Harris, “ The Terror,” “Mad Men”), who is the first to grasp the gravity of the situation; Boris Shcherbina (Stellan Skarsgard, “ Thor,” “Mamma Mia!”), the Soviet deputy prime minister who becomes Legasov’s closest collaborator; and Ulana Khomyuk (Emily Watson, “Hillar y and Jackie,” “Breaking the Waves”), a Soviet physicist committed to detemining the cause of the accident.

The series paints a nightmarish portrait of what happens in a nuclear accident such as this, with scores of burned bodies, people vomitting blood from radiation poisoning and large swaths of other wise green forest scorched brown.

“He understands the dangers inherent in the technology and the science and what could be happening is the worst scenario possible,” Harris says. “And on one level, he has an interest in protecting the reputation and the science and the industr y itself because he sees that it could be a benefit. And on the other hand, once Pandora’s box is opened, it’s the worst possible scenario of all and these idiots have no clue what they’re dealing with and somebody has to stand up Because if the people (in Moscow) are making as bad decisions as these people are, we’re truly f...ed.”

After some initial resistance, Shcherbina comes on board with Legasov and the two work to prevent what could be a second accident that could wind up poisoning Western Europe and devastating a large portion of the planet.

“In some sense, it is a cautionar y tale,” Harris says. “It’s sort of an object lesson in you can make a scientific discovery and we really don’t understand what the consequences are going to be. And there’s that sort of typical human response, of, ‘Well you know, it hasn’t happened until it’s happened and it’s not real until it’s actually happened.’ So in this case, the thing blowing up and saying, ‘We haven’t wrecked the planet until we wrecked the planet.’ And by then, it’s too late to do anything about it.”

Actress Marie Wilson on her journey to a plant-based diet

Anyone considering trying a plant-based diet might want to heed the words of Marie Wilson, a veteran actress who swore off animal proteins in her teens and hasn’t looked back.

“You feel amazing,” she says. “It’s interesting how when you take a week, you just try it for a week and then you go back, it’s amazing the difference you feel between the two I have more energy I have more alertness. You just feel better and your body can process it better, too.”

Wilson, who stars in “Ladies of the Lake” and its follow-up “Ladies of the Lake: Return to Avalon,” both of which are currently streaming on Amazon, has a long history with plant-based diets, longer in fact than her acting credits, which include stints on the daytime dramas “General Hospital” (19992003), “Port Charles” (1999-2003), “As the World Turns” (2005-10) and “Days of our Lives” (201416), as well as roles in the movies “Say You Will” (2017) and “To the Beat!” (2018).

She originally went vegetarian at 17 because that’s what her friends were doing and then later when she tried a hamburger, she found it difficult to digest and painful. So out of necessity, animal fats were out and plants were in. For good.

These days, she’s a lover of salads and quinoa, which she says is delicious and a great source of protein.

“Quinoa has more protein than even meat protein,” she notes, “ so that’s been very enlightening. And also my stomach and my body appreciate it more because I can’t really break down meat protein.

and salads, and instead of rice you do a quinoa dish. There are so many choices, especially nowadays. It’s not like we’re living in the ‘50s, where it was a raw carrot and you’re done.”

As for advice she’d give to prospective vegans or vegetarians, Wilson is succinct.

“Be open-minded,” she asserts, “because a lot of people have this judgment on what it’s like and what the food tastes like and I think when we start judging anything in life, we kind of put limits up and it kind of cuts off great opportunities that might be available to you. So I think just being openminded and trying something. And there’s stuff I’ve tried and didn’t like.

“You won’t love everything,” she adds, “but that’s the fun of experimenting and trying new things and just seeing what happens.”

Based on a true story, Baltasar Kormakur’s 2018 romantic survival drama stars Shailene Woodley and Sam Claflin as Tami Oldham and Richard Sharp, a young couple whose intimate cruise in a small boat is beset by a hurricane that leaves them stranded in the disabled vessel in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Their only hope is somehow to navigate their badly damaged boat to Hawaii without a radio or other electrical devices. The movie received mixed reviews and turned a small profit.
