Andie MacDowell and Hugh Grant reunite in a “Four Weddings and a Funeral” mini-sequel on NBC’s annual Red Nose Day special, airing Thursday.

Since “Love Actually” had a mini-sequel on Red Nose Day two years ago, maybe it isn’t surprising “Four Weddings and a Funeral” is getting similar treatment now.
Both movies were written by Richard Curtis, a co-founder of the Comic Reliefspawned fundraising effort to benefit children in need around the world. For the “Four Weddings” follow-up – already shown in England and airing during NBC’s annual Red Nose Day special Thursday, May 23 – he regathered many of the original cast members including central stars Hugh Grant and Andie MacDowell plus the 1994 film’s director, Mike Newell, to tell the stor y of another wedding the characters attend.
Titled “One Red Nose Day and a Wedding,” the short subject seemed a natural to Curtis after the positive response to his revisiting of “Love Actually,” which he says “caused the question to be asked just around my house, as it were: ‘Is there anything else that we can do?’ The ‘Love Actually’ one was easier, because I could just move on with all those people and it only required a fragment of stor y.
“With this one, it was really only one stor y (initially), and I wasn’t sure I just wanted to hang around with Andie and Hugh in their kitchen. Then it came to me that it’s another generation and it’s been 25 years, so it would be time for another
wedding. The moment I decided I could do that, it became fun.”
That’s also how MacDowell found it to reprise the part of Carrie, the American love interest of severely smitten Englishman Charles (Grant). “I was just excited to get to see everybody, and for such a positive cause,” the actress reflects. “To help those in need and also to all be together, it’s a beautiful idea. I was aware of Red Nose Day and the amazing work (those behind the event) have been able to do They’ve raised so much money.”
Kristin Scott Thomas, John Hannah and Rowan Atkinson are among other “Four Weddings” returnees. “Ever ybody showed up,” mar vels MacDowell, who also appears (“briefly,” she notes) in a forthcoming Hulu series the movie has inspired. “It was amazing.” However, two key cast members are absent from the Red Nose Day reprise: Simon Callow, alias “Gareth,” for a reason anyone familiar with the film will know; and Charlotte Coleman, who played Charles’ sister Scarlett and died in 2001.
As fans of Curtis’ movies might suspect, he’s also planning a Red Nose Day return to “Notting Hill.” He hopes that projected occasion will have a similar result as the “Four Weddings” reunion, which he describes as a group reliving “a defining experience. There was genuine warmth and genuine friendship and genuine delight.”

Cooking has always been a family affair for Jennie Garth.
Growing up on a farm in Illinois, the “Beverly Hills, 90210” actress raised vegetables with her family and was an avid baker, a love she maintains to this day and has passed on to her three daughters. And of course, like any good mom she cooks for her clan.
So it is fitting that Garth and her youngest daughter, 12-year-old Fiona, would put their culinary chops to the test for the discriminating palates of Gordon Ramsay, Joe Bastianich and Aaron Sanchez as the two-part “MasterChef Celebrity Family Showdown” concludes Wednesday, May 22, on Fox.
The experience, Garth says, was a lot of fun but also a bit nerve-wracking.
“I mean, you don’t think about having your food tasted by culinary experts when you’re just cooking at home,” the actress says with a laugh. “You just want to make all the kids happy and get the meal on the table, so in doing it for these guys there was just a lot more like, you know, we knew we were being scrutinized and judged and was something we had to really focus on doing it very well.”
For their challenge, Garth and Fiona were tasked with the “home fridge swap,” in which they had prepare a meal using contents from the refrigerator of their competitors, Garth’s friend and “90210” costar Tori Spelling and her daughter Stella, and they had to do the same with ingredients from the Garth fridge. The twist was that Garth and her daughter had to cook a steak, an alien comestible for two

normally do so I think we were both like, ‘Hey, look what we accomplished. We’re pretty cool.’ ” And in her first TV appearance, Fiona did pretty well too, says Mom, despite being nervous about the prospect of being critiqued by the often-blunt Ramsay
“Fiona was so scared,” Garth says. “She was very nervous going in that he was going to yell at her, and I said, ‘No, he’s nice to kids. He’s not going to do that to you.’ And he was actually really great with her
“And he was a little shocked when I almost lit the kitchen on fire,” she continues, laughing, “but he took it in stride.”
