Noah Wyle rides ‘The Red Line’ in CBS’ limited drama series
Chicago evidently is Noah Wyle’s kind of town.
The actor did location filming there during his “ER” run, and he returned to the Windy City as a principal member of the ensemble cast of “ The Red Line,” a limited-run CBS drama series that plays out in two-hour installments over four consecutive Sundays starting April 28. Prolific TV-show maker Greg Berlanti (“ The Flash,” “God Friended Me”) and filmmaker Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) are among the project’s executive producers.
So are Caitlin Parrish and Erica Weiss, who adapted a play they wrote into “ The Red Line.” It unites various characters through a tragedy: the wrongful killing of a black doctor (Corey Reynolds, “ The Closer”) by a white police officer (Noel Fisher, “Shameless”). Wyle portrays Daniel, a high-school teacher particularly impacted by the death, as is his teenage daughter (Aliyah Royale) who frequently rides the Chicago train known as The Red Line with him. Emayatzy Corinealdi (also of DuVernay’s movie “Middle of Nowhere”) and Elizabeth Laidlaw (“Chicago P.D.”) also have prominent roles.
“I have to say the emotional reaction that I had to the first reading of this (stor y) was intense,” Wyle recalls. “I have never read a piece
of material and had it move me like that, and that consistently happened with ever y single script. I can’t even talk about this show without getting upset. It was much more about staying out of my own way and going in and doing my homework, but being really open to being in Chicago and working with the Chicago crew – and working with a diverse crew and a young crew, and a crew that didn’t really have a frame of reference from when I was in that city before.”
After producing his main acting projects (“ The Librarians,” “Falling Skies”) in recent years, Wyle put himself in others’ creative hands again for “ The Red Line.” Weiss explains that she and Parrish “are from the Chicago theater scene, and that community is a part of who we are in ever ything we do. When we created this show, it was never going to be set or filmed anywhere else. “ The city has a burgeoning industr y in film and TV where more and more things are being filmed there,” adds Weiss. “Amazing crew, incredible local talent so for us, it was a no brainer And I think Chicago has a lot to prove in the national conversation. We want to show the countr y that we are more than a talking point, more than the narrative that is often used to describe the city There are so many layers and so many different kinds of people, it really is the perfect microcosm to tell an American stor y. ”

Though it wasn’t a surprise when you filmed your final “Game of Thrones” scene as Tyrion Lannister, was it still an emotional wallop for you when you actually did it?
Yeah. I knew it was coming, and I was about one of the last people to wrap up. I think the whole season and series wrapped up the following day There was a lot of smoke in the air and a lot of sand in our shoes, but it was beautifully intimate, too. It wasn’t a big, big scene.

These are not only the most talented people I know, but they’ve also become my really close friends. It’s not just saying goodbye to a TV show, it’s saying goodbye to a life over there (in Ireland, where the series was filmed). I really felt welcome over there; maybe it’s my Irish ancestr y, but I’ll miss it terribly
As for your home life, how was it for you to be based overseas for such long stretches of time during production of the series?
I live in New York, so I didn’t get to go home as much as others who live in London or other par ts of Europe. I got to know my way over there, and it’s a really lovely and beautiful place. I was sad to see the whole thing end.
Now that “Game of Thrones” is over in terms of filming it, what do you see in store for you?
As much as I love Tyrion – and he’s probably the greatest character I’ll ever por tray – it’s always nice to do something completely unique. (Last year’s HBO movie “My Dinner With Her ve” was) the first time I’ve played a living, breathing person, so that was pretty daunting. I would bring ever ything I have in mind to HBO if I could but then, I think I’d be on it way too much!

Q: Will “Fargo” ever come back with another season? –Kim Jacob, DeLand, Fla.
A: It will, but not until early 2020 at the soonest. That owes to how busy the chief creative force behind the FX series, writer-producer Noah Hawley, has been with other projects (including a couple of movies). He and the show’s staff have been working on “Fargo” scripts for Season 4 – which will star Chris Rock as a Kansas City under world kingpin – and filming of them should begin this fall.
Q: I used to love “JAG,” and now I’m hearing about some sort of “JAG” reunion project. What are the details? – Brian Harris, via e-mail
A: It’s going to happen on “NCIS: Los Angeles,” over that CBS show’s final two episodes of the season. On May 12, David James Elliott will resurface as Capt. Harmon “Harm” Rabb Jr. in the first of two appearances, in which the character teams with NCIS agents Callen and Hanna (Chris O’Donnell, LL Cool J) to track down ISIS-affiliated villains. That plot will continue on May 19, also bringing in Catherine Bell (who’s been starring in Hallmark Channel’s “Good Witch” franchise lately) in her former “JAG” role as Lt. Col. Sarah “Mac” MacKenzie. It turns out that Mac is an old friend of Hetty (Linda Hunt) of “NCIS: Los Angeles,” who can use her direct help in the case. Netflix puts ‘Street Food’ and its makers front and center in new documentar y series
Fans of the lush photography and storytelling of “Chef ’s Table” will want to check out a culinary series from the same production team that currently streams on Netflix.
In the aptly titled “Street Food,” cameras go to some of the most vibrant cities in the world to explore their street food scene and the rich culture behind it, with each episode spotlighting stories of individual perseverance that bring each country’s cuisine to life. They’re stories that address the human condition, maintains Brian McGinn, who served as executive producer and director of both series, as well as cocreator here.
“The thing that was so exciting to see,” he explains, “ was, instead of it being, ‘How can I be the best chef in the country?’ – the question became, ‘How can I continually improve the dish? How can I make my food great so that I can support my family or I can help my son have a choice of what type of life he wants to lead?’ And to me, those are such universal, human life questions, and to see how food intersects with those and to see what role food plays in helping people answer those questions is awesome. ”
The opening episode goes to Bangkok, where viewers meet Jai Fai, a Michelin-starred chef who is arguably the most famous street vendor in the world. It also spotlights Jek Pui, a cart vendor renowned for its curry.
“People line up in the morning for these curries,” McGinn says, “and they sit on little red stools and they eat their curry on the street. And it’s the story of this family and how they started this curry business and how they have continued those traditions.”

“There’s so much technique and craft and expertise and mastery that goes into making what seems like a simple plate of food that you can get for a very inexpensive amount of money from a stall in the street,” he continues. “And what you don’t kind of know is that a lot of these people have spent 40, 50, 60 years mastering that one dish or figuring out how can they improve one thing after the other And what’s so interesting to see is the dedication and the focus that people have in the street food world.”
