Pierce Brosnan returns to finish AMC’s ‘The Son’

“ The Son” is rising again for Pierce Brosnan, and as it starts its last round, he’s satisfied with what he’s brought to it.

Based on the novel by Philipp Meyer, the multigenerational AMC drama series spanning 150 years begins its second and last season Saturday, April 27. Brosnan returns as patriarch Eli McCullough, who’s focused on the early-20th-centur y rise of the oil business as he tries to handle conflicts both within and outside his Texas family. Illegal immigration and a rivalry between Comanche leaders are among the issues facing Eli and other McCulloughs as the saga’s timeline jumps back and forth.

Having tackled iconic roles from Robinson Crusoe to (of course) James Bond, the ever-gentlemanly Brosnan ranks Eli “ver y favorably” among his career highlights. “I really played him like an Irishman playing a Texan, and that allowed me to have a wonderful experience with the character, playing someone who is a born sur vivor and knows nothing but a world of violence. Eli definitely has lingered in my heart.”

As Eli in younger years, Jacob Lofland shares the part with Brosnan in a cast that includes fellow returnees Henr y Garrett, David Wilson Barnes, Jess Weixler, Zahn McClarnon and Sydney Lucas – whose character, Eli’s granddaughter Jeannie, is represented in later times by Season 2 cast addition Lois Smith

(“Lady Bird”). Glenn Stanton, Jeremy Bobb and David Sullivan board “ The Son” as well for its final set of episodes.

“I’ve really enjoyed going back to TV,” Brosnan notes after having established himself in “Remington Steele” in the 1980s. “ That gave me my break in America and was my ticket to this career that I have. I like the pace of TV There’s room to nurture a character and a stor y line, and to bring an audience into this world (of ‘ The Son’) created by Philipp Meyer that’s so textured and layered.”

Having finished “ The Son,” which he says was enhanced for him by “living in the Texas lifestyle in Austin” during production, Brosnan is continuing his movie work. He recently filmed the caper “ The Misfits” for director Renny Harlin (“Cliffhanger”), and he’s now making the horror-themed “False Positive” in New York. “A journeyman actor is a good thing to be,” reasons Brosnan, who’s also giving added attention to his painting after his portrait of music’s Bob Dylan sold at a charity auction last year for $1.4 million.

Having now played her for this long, what’s your take on your “Neighborhood” character, wife and mother and school principal Gemma?

love Gemma! She’s so much tougher as a person than I am. Maybe that comes with motherhood, which I might know for myself someday – but it’s really been such a gift, this show When we got the Season 2 pickup, we were all cr ying. We all just want to keep doing for a long time.

can’t wait to see where the characters go. I feel like this is the kind of show that could last for 10 years, because it’s about a community and about people coming together and about family There are all sor ts of things they can still write for us. The oppor tunities are endless.

What are your plans for your summer hiatus?

It’s so nice to know that you’re coming back, because then you know your schedule. It’s really impor tant for me to keep up my charity work with my SheHerdPower Foundation (for victims of sexual assault), so I have a lot of plans for that. A movie might be the only work thing I do, but we’ll see if that works out.

A: The actress has been up to bat as a series star several times before.

After a recurring role (as “Brittany” Rober tson) on the 1970s-set CBS drama

“Swingtown,” she had the central role in The CW’s critically acclaimed but low-rated “Life Unexpected.”

The CW then kept her on board for the supernatural-themed drama “The Secret Circle,” and an other worldly quality also informed Rober tson’s subsequent series ... “Under the Dome,” which had three summer seasons on CBS. However, she only was in the first two; during production of the last one, she was busy working on the Disney feature film “Tomorrowland” with George Clooney. Just before she was signed for “For the People,” Rober tson had the lead role in “Girlboss,” a fact-inspired Netflix show that lasted for one 13-episode season.

vine brings the truth and takes the abuse in Season 14 of ‘Restaurant: Impossible’

Note to restaurant owners: If Robert Irvine is in your establishment, make sure your host is attentive and your bathrooms are clean. Those are the first things he notices.

“The bathrooms should be as clean as your kitchen ...,” the British-born chef, restaurateur and host of Food Network’s “Restaurant: Impossible” explains. “It sets the tone for the restaurant – the way the cooks look, the way the servers look, the way they talk to you, the way the host is when you walk in the door Is she chewing gum? Is she on the phone? You know, all these things that when you’re in a public service – and a restaurant is a public service – from the moment you walk up to this place, the host is the first person you see and the last person you see. And I rarely get met with somebody who’s not chewing gum, which drives me crazy by the way.”

Now back and in its 14th season after a three-year hiatus, the Saturday series finds Irvine returning for more adventures in rescuing failing eateries, helping frazzled restaurateurs in California and Arizona fix issues with their food, cleanliness, management, leadership and attitude in the span of 48 hours and with a budget of $10,000.

And while Irvine was reluctant to get into specifics about the individual cases this season, he will admit that viewers will see a lot of heightened emotion as people who are in danger of losing their homes, health and even families vent their frustrations and sometimes abuse on Irvine, who knows to not take it personally.

“All I do is listen,” he says. “It’s no good me getting agitated at them because they’re in the fearful position of losing X amount of money a year,

One owner this season was a particularly tough nut to crack.

“It took me and her husband more so than me, to talk her off the ledge and say, ‘Listen, you want help? You’re half a million dollars in debt. What are we going to do?’ And I said to her husband, ‘Hey, if I walk out of here, what’s going to happen with your restaurant?’ And he said, ‘Well, it closes and that’s it.’ So then she kind of agreed reluctantly until another six hours later (when) she became really calm and then started to listen.”

As of this writing, Fox has yet to officially renew Seth MacFarlane’s somewhat polarizing sci-fi dramedy, but in some respects the show seems to have found itself creatively during this second season, which has seen some cast shakeups — including the welcome addition of actress Jessica Szohr as a new crew member — and a raising of dramatic stakes in its writing.
