‘Jesus Christ Superstar’ returns in NBC’s live Easter production

In staging “Jesus Christ Superstar” live for television on Easter Sunday, those involved are taking the iconic rock opera back to its roots.

Originated as a concept album by composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, the retelling of the last week of Jesus’ life gets a concert-style performance April 1 on NBC. Title star John Legend is among the music staples in the production, along with Sara Bareilles as Mary Magdalene and Alice Cooper as King Herod. The cast also includes Broadway veterans Brandon Victor Dixon (“The Color Purple”) as Judas, Ben Daniels (“Les Liaisons Dangereuses”) as Pontius Pilate, and Norm Lewis (“The Phantom of the Opera”) as Caiaphas.

Attended by an in-person audience at the Marcy Armory in the Williamsburg section of Brooklyn, N.Y., “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” is the latest live TV musical from longtime producing partners Craig Zadan and Neil Meron. They’ve also furnished NBC with “The Sound of Music,” “Peter Pan,” “The Wiz” and “Hairspray” in recent years. (Marc Platt, who did the live “Grease” and “A Christmas Story” for Fox, also is a “Superstar” executive producer.)

Citing “Superstar” as “the first time rock music was used to tell such a controversial story,” Meron says he

and Zadan first considered producing a TV version right after the 2013 “Sound of Music” broadcast.

“Craig and I had the great fortune of meeting Andrew and Tim in the 1970s,” Meron adds, when he and Zadan oversaw a series of programs involving composers and lyricists. “This is reconnecting with someone we’d already had some sort of dialogue and trust established with, and it’s been great to actually work with them so many years later. They’re legends, but – as they were 40 years ago – they’re also wonderful people.”

Grammy and Tony nominee Bareilles began rehearsing for “Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert” just before ending her Broadway run in “Waitress,” for which she also composed the music and lyrics. The artist behind “Brave” and “Love Song” deems “Superstar” to be “one of the greats” of musical theater: “The score has been in my life for a long time. I got introduced to it very young by my oldest sister, who was a big fan, and it’s interesting getting a chance to experience it now.”

As Mary Magdalene, Bareilles gets to add her touch to the classic song “I Don’t Know How to Love Him.” Having read a related book recently, she notes, “There’s so much that actually is kind of misleading in what gets said about her. It feels like a great privilege that I get to jump into this role, and it’s nice to give yourself a more complete understanding of it.”

What are your favorite cuisines?

I think for me, I really like to explore. I’m big on experimenting with my own cooking, my own flavor palate. Favorite cuisines? That’s tough because I really just go with what my body’s craving at the time. Like right now, my body is craving like brothy soup. Would I say that’s my favorite cuisine? Absolutely not. Is it the thing I want most in the world right now? Yes.

Especially if you have a cold.

Also in general, I’m just a big fan of soup. I don’t think soup gets as much credit as it

deserves. ... I also love a chowder. I mean, soup arguably is probably not one of the most interesting things, but I do love soup, yes. But in general, I try and usually check in with what my body is leaning toward physically. When people say I’m in the mood for this or in the mood for that, I try and live like every meal that way if I can.

What is the strangest thing you’ve ever tried?

You know, I walked away from shooting (Food Network’s “I Hart Food”) a massive fan of bison meat. North American bison, I never thought I would be a big fan of. I strongly prefer it to cow and to beef. It’s incredible. It is more flavorful and it’s better for you physically. We spent this amazing time on a bison ranch in Montana and I walked away from that absolutely a huge advocate/proponent of bison meat, not only as an alternative but as a go-to in terms of the ground red meat. ... It’s great.

And it’s wild to me because bison are fully sustainable to North America, they’re from here, they’re completely easy on the land. They are massive – you don’t need to overproduce them. It’s just like kind of mind-blowing. I got a really wonderful education in bison from this rancher and I’m a big convert. When we cook at home, I pretty much if I can – and if I see it at the store I’ll grab it and I’ll be like, “OK, this is definitely what we’re making.”

generating a world inspired by a Marvel Comics character, “Legion” has a bounty of twists and turns. Do you ever get confused in enacting it?

I do find that each subsequent script reconfigures the current one I’m reading, and they always take at least three or four readings before you realize there’s something I missed. It’s often in a stage direction, because like most actors, I don’t read them ... and I come on set and say, “Wait. There’s a cow?” And, “Oh, yeah. That was the bit where I wasn’t speaking.” It’s there. There’s always something that you miss.

How often do you consult with executive producer Noah Hawley (“Fargo”) about what’s happening in the show?

We’re sort of at a level of psychic communication where I don’t need to ask so many questions. As Noah says, the scripts are probably more confusing than the show ends up being, and everybody – cast, crew – we often find ourselves asking questions we don’t really need to be asking, (and we) get in a terrible tangle about something. It is actually straightforward, and it’s been sort of dressed up to look more abstract and playful than it actually is. That’s part of the fun of the show, I think.

Which fantasy shows do you consider to be touchstones of the genre?

My mom and I used to love “Quantum Leap.” That was a staple. But there were lots of ... like, “Mork & Mindy,” in terms of American shows. In terms of British shows, I was raised on a pretty heavy diet of “Monty Python,” which has formed most of what I’ve done in my life.

And “Doctor Who,” I guess. My “Doctor Who” was very sort of (the version that starred) Tom Baker, which was in itself quite an experience. Just watching Tom Baker do anything is quite psychedelic. I think there was a slightly more surreal sensibility, in some of the British comedy particularly, but maybe some of the sci-fi as well.

You returned to “Strike Back” for the last two episodes of its current season. Since you’re now playing the much more urban Peter Stone on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” how was it to be back as the rugged Sgt. Michael Stonebridge?

There was talk about it when the new cast got put in place. (The producers) said, “Wouldn’t it be great if you could make an appearance?” It was only going to be sort of a nod, because it was all about having the time to get over there, and we couldn’t do anything bigger than that.

It was a ton of fun. Sully (fellow returnee Sullivan Stapleton) and I flew over there, and we had about 24 hours to shoot these scenes. We landed, started rolling, and then stumbled out of Budapest and back to the States.

What do you think about the cast that has assumed “Strike Back” from you?

It was encouraging to see these new actors taking these roles so seriously and jumping in wholeheartedly. It was a tough show to do. When you look back, it’s with rose-tinted glasses and, “Oh, it was so much fun” ... but man, I remember limping into my apartment and going, “What are we doing? This is insane!”

And I could see that on the faces of this new cast. Sully and I sat them down and said, “You will never, ever get another opportunity to do something like this, so until the people higher up tell you it’s not going to happen, you hold onto this sucker and ride it.” Doing “Strike Back” is like bull riding; it’s not much fun, but when it’s over, it’s so exhilarating.

As winter turns to spring, you may find yourself coming down with a case of wanderlust. If so, a number of series on basic cable show where you where you can find some good eats in just about every corner of the country.

Such is the case with the Cooking Channel series known as “Cheap Eats,” which in the Wednesday, April 4, episode finds host Ali Khan in Boston, where he has a coffee-encrusted Bloody Mary burger for breakfast, Chinese dumplings for lunch and a lobster roll for dinner. Fine dining on a budget of $35 or less.

Over on the other side of the country on Travel Channel, two series check out what’s on the menu in San Diego. In the Tuesday, April 3, episode of “The Zimmern List,” host Andrew Zimmern takes viewers to some of his favorite off-the-beaten-path spots, including Little Italy for seafood and Barrio Logan for some authentic Mexican cuisine. And on Sunday’s “Best in Food,” it’s a visit to the San Diego Mac n’ Cheese Fest. Need we say more?

Working our way back east, Food Network’s “Vegas Cakes” opens its second season on Monday, April 2, with Sin City’s venerable Freed’s Bakery continuing to wow its customers with its fun, elaborate and delicious cake designs.

That same day on Travel, a second episode of “Best in Food” heads to Magnolia, Ark., for its annual World Championship Steak Cook-Off, in which competitors grill up rib eyes in the hopes of winning a $10,000 grand prize.

And back on the East Coast in the Long Island, N.Y., kitchen of Ina Garten, the Sunday installment of Food’s “Barefoot Contessa” titled “Cook Like a Pro: Parmesan” finds the host preparing a spread of lemon parmesan chicken, broccoli rabe with sausage, parmesan chive smashed potatoes and celery and parmesan salad. And for dessert, canapes topped with parmesan shards, parmesan crisps and parmesan and chipotle popcorn. Delizioso!
