Flying Fez Wine Tasting Festival set

Wines with exotic names — and some less exotic — can be tasted the 15th annual Flying Fez Wine Tasting Festival.

The festival runs 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Bedouin Shrine.

Festival Chairman Rory Robertson said the $20 entry fee allows people to sample wines from at least 11 wineries.

“I’m a semi-sweet fan,” Robertson said. “I’m not big on Cabernet sauvignon. I like a good merlot.”

He said one new winery is One Crazy Old Fart, a wholesale winery in Wagoner.

Founder Randy Orman said the name is unique and popular.

“All the liquor stores were in love the name,” Orman said. “It actually originated as two crazy old farts. It was me and a district judge, starting just making it for ourselves. I wanted to make more than he did, so he just said, ‘you take it and go on with it.’”

And that’s how the name became One Crazy Old Fart,

he said.

He said the winery got its license in 2016.

Orman said the winery offers seven kinds of wine, including two merlots.

One, Mad Dog, is a plain California merlot. The other, Quad Kiss, is a blend with South African and South American merlots, a California Cabernet and a Canadian white zinfandel.

“It comes out very smooth,” he said. “A merlot without an afterbite.”

Orman said both merlots are smooth.

“We have people who don’t necessarily like a dry red wine until they taste ours, and they say ‘that’s not bitter

Sweetheart Dance includes everyone

The entire family is invited to dance at the former Father-Daughter Dance event

More people can dance with their daughters — and sons — at this year’s Sweetheart Dance.

The dance, sponsored by Wagoner County LAUNCH, will be 6 p.m. Saturday at Wagoner Civic Center.

The third annual dance is expanding to a larger space and will invite more people, said Nancy Thomasson, Wagoner County LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children’s Health) secretary-treasurer.

If you go

WHAT: Sweetheart Dance.

WHEN: 6 p.m. Saturday.

WHERE: Wagoner Civic Center, 301 S. Grant Ave., Wagoner.

ADMISSION: $10 for one parent and one child; $15 for parent and multiple children; $5 for extra adults.

“Formerly, it’s been known as the Father-Daughter Dance. This year, we are opening it up to include mothers and sons,” Thomas-

son said. “We had feedback last year that moms kind of felt left out.”

Last year’s dance was at the Koffee Kan restaurant in Wagoner, she said.

“We had too many people for our space last year,” Thomasson said. “Last year, we had between 47 and 50 dads. That doesn’t even count the kids. As long as we have the turnout, we can keep doing it bigger and better each year.”

Admission is $10 for one parent and one child and $15 for one parent with multiple children.

Thomasson said there

Frank Sandiford dances with one daughter, Elizabeth, while another daughter, Brianna, watches during a 2017 Father-Daughter Dance sponsored by Wagoner County LAUNCH.
Fathers dance with their little girls at the 2017 Father Daughter Dance at the Koffee Kan restaurant. This year, the dance moves to the Wagoner Civic Center and becomes a Sweetheart Dance for all family members.

will be a $5 fee “for a mom that just wants to come, or a grandparent that just wants to come and kind of help out.”

The dance will feature food donated by various businesses.

Past dances also have featured a photographer, who shot free pictures of the couples.

“The only cost will be for the tickets, the corsages and boutonnieres,” Thomasson said. “If they want a corsage or boutonniere, they need to call and reserve a ticket, or buy a ticket ahead of time, so we know how many to make.”

Wagoner Girl Scouts are making the corsages and boutonnieres this year, Thomasson said.

“They’re $3 apiece. They’re going to be artificial flowers,” she said. “Last year, we had a lot of feedback that the girls and the dads really liked them.”

The dance is not a fund-raiser.

“The money is just enough to rent the building,” she said. “The food is all donated. We do that to keep our costs low. This year, we’re just using the money for the DJ and to rent the Civic Center.”

Some of the food will be donated by Miranda’s Cake House, Koffee Kan, WalMart, plus various churches and individuals.

Thomasson said Wagoner County LAUNCH is a group of parents seeking to offer low-cost entertainment for Wagoner families.

“We don’t really have a lot. We have the bowling alley and the EF,” she said, referring to Eternity Fraternity, a Christian youth center.

“We do movies in the park, we’ve done the father-daughter dance, we do the Buster Bone hunt, which is like a scavenger hunt for families,” she said.

at all in the end,’” he said. “We’ve been very lucky, very fortunate.”

Other wines include a Chardonnay, Charlie’s, named for Orman’s father.

There also is a blackberry merlot called Black Hat, a strawberry white merlot called Red Hat, and a peach Chardonnay called Fuzzylicious.

“We are the only winery that will be there that has a coconut wine,” Orman said. “Tastes just like eating a piece of coconut cream pie.”

He said coconut extract is added while making the wine, Coco Crazy.

Flying Fez also will feature popular wines from past festivals. They include Pecan Creek Winery of Muskogee, Deep Branch near Lake Tenkiller, Woods & Water, Arri’Bin Hills, Blue Coyote, Summerside, Native Spirits, Fish Tales, StableRidge, Wakefield and Whispering Vines.

Flying Fez visitors also can enjoy a homemade gourmet Italian lunch from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. for $10.

Robertson said people also may buy lighter fare, an antipasti dish with cheeses, breads and other items.

Proceeds from Flying Fez benefit the Shrine’s general fund.

The Tahlequah Public Library offers both arts and reading for children, teens and adults and it’s all free, according to librarian Michelle Newton. She reminds everyone they also have games and movies to check out, and some fun, hands-on activities.

“We have a giant pixelated poster of ‘The Starry Night’ that everyone who comes in can add colored squares to, to complete,” said Newton. “Of course, you can read books.”

In the children’s area, Newton has made a large Mr. Potato Head, cut out with pieces that can be changed around.

“It has cut out faces, body parts and large lips,” Newton said.

On Monday, March 19, a lifesized Rubik’s cube will be available in the library.

“Kid’s can make a snake or castle, or whatever they imagine. The goal is to have fun with a Rubik’s cube,” she said.

The regular Baby Bookworms will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, and Toddler Tales and Reading Rockstars are on Friday, March 23, at 10 and 11 a.m.

Spring Clean Craft Clean Out will be on March 21 at 10 a.m. for all ages.

“All the leftover crafts from holidays, like Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Summer Reading, whatever, still in the closet are being cleaned out and we’ll be making crafts from them,” Newton said.

A Fairy Tale Scavenger Hunt will be held Thursday, March 22, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with Fairy Tale pictures hidden in the Children’s Department.

At the Hulbert Community Library, assistant manager Pam Davis said they’ll have a Lego Day, Play

Doh Day, and Teen Cooking Club, but the schedule is not yet set.

“We’ll also have Perler beads, little round rubber pieces. You make a pattern, set the pieces on and iron,” said Davis. “It will all be fun for the kids.”

Arts will also be available at the Cherokee Art Center and Dena’s Art Den in Cort Mall. Cultural arts classes will be offered by Matt Anderson at the Cherokee Art Center.

Dena Coleman, art instructor at Dena’s Art Den said Art Camp is Monday through Thursday, 1-3 p.m. for ages 6 and up. Call or text 918-207-5488 to reserve a place. Cost is $100 per student and all supplies are included.

Living History will be on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the George Murrell Hunter’s Home, said Cultural Interpreter Jennifer Frazee.

“Kids can also volunteer here; parents just need to call ahead before Spring Break so we can plan jobs for them,” Frazee said.

The Cherokee Heritage Center and Cherokee Nation museums will be offering a make-and-take on Wednesday.

“We’ll have a hands-on event, a cultural art activity, all day,” said Curator Callie Chunestudy.

the Cherokee Nation Prison Museum, said all the museums are doing activities for kids.

“We’re doing a silhouette paint and color sheets all day. There’s no admission for participants,” Door said. “And we’ll have a radio remote here that day.”

For anyone looking for fun and exercise, the Skate House will be open every day of Spring Break, according to owner Dusty Fore. Sessions may have themes or special games skaters can play. Bring quarters for the video games or air hockey.

Thunder Bowl will open at 11 a.m. during Spring Break, said Randy Gregory. It’s $5 for shoes and two games, for ages 12 and under, until 5 p.m., including tax. The regular special after 5 on Wednesday is $12 for all-you-can bowl, including shoes, open juke box, and glow bowl.

Aletha Rodgers, owner of the Kidz Zone, said they have activities planned. A Petting Zoo by Zoo Safari is on Tuesday, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Cost is $15 per child, or $12 for additional siblings. The Easter Bunny will be there on Friday, 4-5:30 p.m.

“It’s $10 for parents to use their own camera and the kids receive treat-filled eggs,” said Rodgers. It’s open all week; regular admission is $7 and additional siblings are $5 each. They get to play on the Majestics, which has a double slide, a punching bag and different levels; a Victorian play house with tables and chair; a pretend grocery store; a climbing wall with mats underneath; and an area for dress-up play.

“Kids need socks to play on the Majestic and there’s Wi-Fi. Parents can sit, relax and watch their kids play,” she said.

Cherokee Nation Cultural Tourism will host Spring Break Makeand-Take classes at all Cherokee Nation Museums 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Thursday, March 22. Students can visit any Cherokee Nation museum to participate in a cultural craft. For more information, call 888-9996007.

‘American Idol’ returns with new judges and a new network

T wo years isn’t a long absence for a show that supposedly ended, but “American Idol” is back.

The most notable differences as the singing competition returns? A new network, since after its 15 seasons on Fox, it begins its ABC run Sunday, March 11; and a new panel of top music stars as judges, with Luke Bryan, Katy Perry and Lionel Richie now handling those roles. Still, many of the show’s essential elements have been retained, including Ryan Seacrest as host.

“It’s different, obviously, because of these personalities,” notes Seacrest, who also will continue his weekday “Live With Regis and Kelly” cohost duties, “but the show,

at its core, works in format and works in premise. We go out. We look for young, talented people. They see the judges. (Those chosen) come back to Hollywood and then, they have to step up. To change the show drastically in terms of format, I think, would be a mistake.”

The first celebrity signed for the new “Idol,” Perry was a guest judge on the earlier version and has scored a major payday –reportedly, $25 million – for joining the program fulltime.

“ ‘American Idol’ and I have always been circling each other,” she says, “and it just hasn’t been the right timing. And now, after ten years and a lot of aging and learning and providence, I can take all that information

and really mentor and give constructive criticism, because that’s really what we do. We’re here to really find a star and, if someone isn’t a star, we delicately help repurpose them on the path that’s going to be good for them.”

Richie also likes using his experience to benefit new talents. Explaining that he’s been asked to do projects offering career advice, the winner of four Grammy Awards and an Oscar admits he considered turning “American Idol” down ... “and then I realized, ‘(It’s about) reaching people.’

“The beautiful part about this is the judging. We’re artists, and we know exactly how to critique talent, so all the things that I was going to put in my

video and my CD and my master class, I’m actually going to be able to tell the ‘students’ in person. I consider myself the instructor, basically.”

For Bryan, signing up for “American Idol” came down to a simple gut reaction. “I just felt like it was going to be a blast to be a part of,” he reflects. “I’ve had the opportunity to do some TV stuff through the years and turned it down, because I always focused on touring in my little kind of countrymusic world that I just kind of figured out.

“And then, ‘American Idol’ happens, and I jumped right on it. It was never a moment’s thought for me, because I get inspired (by it). I’m in there on the emotional ride with these kids.”

JACK CUTMORE-SCOTT

Do you believe in magic? Well, Jack Cutmore-Scott does now.

The former title star of the Fox sitcom “Cooper Barrett’s Guide to Surviving Life” returns to series work as a disgraced illusionist who uses the tricks of his trade to help the FBI catch slippery felons in the ABC drama “Deception,” premiering Sunday, March 11. The prolific Greg Berlanti (“The Flash,” “Blindspot”) is among the series’ executive producers, and actual magician David Kwong – who was an adviser on the first “Now You See Me” movies – is a co-producer and hands-on consultant on the show, created by Chris Fedak (“Chuck”).

“It’s been a very steep learning curve,” the pleasant Cutmore-Scott admits of learning magic for the job. “I have David Kwong to thank for most of the-day to-day, as well as another magician, Francis Menotti, who works with us. It definitely is an ongoing thing. I’m trying to stay a little bit ahead of each episode and find out what’s coming up in order to have a week or two of practice, but it is a lot of work.”

Cutmore-Scott adds that the intensive preparation has given him “an insight into just how much work these guys do, to do it for real. I would never feel comfortable doing it live on stage with just one take, but so far, I’ve felt like I’ve been able to get to a comfort level for each episode where I at least feel prepared enough to have a go at it. And by take 23 or 24, I’ve pretty much got it down.”

There’s a sizable twist to the principal “Deception” character that might leave the audience feeling deceived. Rather than give that up here, suffice it to say the London-born Cutmore-Scott has spent much of the past

year keeping a close eye on all the living research he can find.

“I’ve watched a lot of magicians, young and old,” he confirms, “and for me, it was mainly just trying to embody the confidence and the physical presence that magicians have on stage. And on TV where, at least, I really believe they know what they’re doing. And even if something goes wrong, I won’t know.”

Birthdate: April 16, 1987

Birthplace: London, England

Current residences: Los Angeles and England

Marital status: Single

Movie work includes: “Bad Match” (forthcoming), “Dunkirk,” “Kingsman: The Secret Service”

Stage work includes: “Cyrano de Bergerac,” “Arcadia,” Much Ado About Nothing“

On his first experience with magic: “A good friend of mine was a very talented – and still is a very talented – magician, and he’s now a professional magician back home (in England). More than anything else, I was a guinea pig for his tricks. My actual experience doing any magic was very limited, beyond the basics that he would sort of very forgivingly show me how to do.”

Ali Khan takes the cake as host of Food Network’s ‘Spring Baking Championship’

As a first-time host of Food Network’s “Spring Baking Championship,” Ali Khan is blown away by not only the creativity and skill of the competitors, but by the coolly detached manner by which Duff Goldman, Lorraine Pascale and Nancy Fuller go about judging the cakes, pies and other pastries turned out on the Monday series.

“They’re not in love with it, they’re not wowed by it, that’s just how these people pick up a fork,” he says. “Like they look at it, they take it, they take that bite, put a little thing in their mouth. ... What’s funny is they kind of all had this policy of they’ll take a taste and that’s that. But when it was good, they would start to pick at it a little bit more. But for the most part, these guys were like literally tasting and then deliberating. They weren’t weak-kneed like me.”

As the eight-episode fourth season gets going Monday, March 12, 10 bakers from around the country prepare spring-themed treats in a series of trials and challenges, hoping to impress the judges and win a $50,000 grand prize and the title of Spring Baking Champion.

All eight episodes were filmed over two weeks last summer in New Orleans, one of the world’s culinary capitals and a place where Khan, who also hosts Cooking Channel’s “Cheap Eats” (which opens its fifth season on March 21), found delicious meals virtually everywhere.

“Let’s put it this way,” he says, “my per diem was higher than $35 for four meals. So I got to really, really sample the town, like hardcore for two-plus weeks. I’m surprised I didn’t gain more weight when I look back.”

What book are you currently reading?

“All I’ve been reading lately is the book to my 6-year-old, so I actually have it in my hands. I’m currently reading and rereading ‘Scooby-Doo and the Fishy Phantom.’ He’s into Scooby-Doo right now, so honestly these are the books I’ve been reading a lot lately.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“I had barbacoa tacos. Oh man, I had some hardcore Tex-Mex, like real deal Tex-Mex tacos. ... It’s like these braised beef cheeks, almost steamed, like super-rich and fatty. And I also had this other thing called carne asada, which is this cross between asada, a traditional Mexican stew, braised, but carne asada has flour in it. ... It’s almost like steak tips and gravy meets Mexican food. So yeah, I knocked down a couple of tacos last night.”

What is your next project?

“We’re going to get through Season 5 (of ‘Cheap Eats’).”

When was your last vacation, where and why?

“My last true vacation, I went to the Jersey Shore with my family. They rented a place on the Jersey Shore – Sea Isle City last July, and we’re going to do that again. But my next vacation, I’m going down to Playa del Carmen in Mexico. I’m really looking forward to that.”

Television mega-producer Shonda Rhimes has told tales about the law, but now, she’s coming at them from a different angle.

“How to Get Away With Murder” has taken a specific approach to the legal profession, and – fueled by series creator, fellow executive producer and former litigator Paul William Davies – Rhimes tackles another by following young lawyers on opposing sides of federal cases in “For the People,” which ABC debuts Tuesday, March 13. Public defenders (played by Britt Robertson, Jasmin Savoy Brown and Wesam Keesh) and prosecutors (Ben Rappaport, Rege-Jean Page, Susannah Flood) clash regularly in the United States District Court for

the Southern District of New York ... also known as “The Mother Court.”

Davies reasons that in recent years, “Entertainment has focused on the process of the law and understanding the system, as opposed to more of a ‘Perry Mason’ who-did-it. And that really interested me, and I think that interested Betsy (Beers, a longtime Rhimes producing colleague) and Shonda in trying to give kind of a fuller picture of the law and what people who are involved in the law go through ... the lawyers, the clients, the judges, the clerks, the entire system. I feel like we’re a part of that, and that’s a good thing.”

Actress Robertson, who’s been busy in both TV (“Under the

Dome,” “Life Unexpected”) and movies (“Tomorrowland,” “The Space Between Us”), allows that working on “For the People” is giving her “a very different point of view” on the world of law.

“I just always assumed if a guy’s being prosecuted, he did something wrong. And what I’m learning – specifically through my character, Sandra, because she’s such an advocate for people and it’s a big part of her passion – is finding out (about) whoever she’s defending and their story and why they’ve been put in this position. That’s at the core of what drives her, finding unique and creative ways to defend these people when the odds are stacked against her.”

John Simm (“Doctor Who,” “The Catch”) gives a standout performance in this taut three-part psychological thriller as a suburban London father so traumatized by the murder of his teen son that he tries to ruin the life of the surgeon (Adrian Lester, “Hustle,” “Primary Colors”) who failed to save the boy. Sooners ready for NCAA run with Trae Young

The Oklahoma Sooners come into the NCAA Tournament with yet another standout player in the form of freshman point guard Trae Young. After what is called the First Four, or the “play-in” games Tuesday and Wednesday on TruTV, the tournament of 64 teams begins Thursday, March 15 on CBS, TNT, TBS and TruTV. Young exploded on the college basketball scene earlier this season when he scored 43 points against Oregon in November. That was the beginning of a solid run for the Sooners, a Final Four team just two years ago, and they won ten straight. Things began to change for Oklahoma once Big 12 conference play got under way. Still, Young put up 43 points again in an overtime win against then No. 16 TCU. A week later he scored 48 in a losing effort in overtime against Oklahoma State. Turnovers, however, have plagued the young point guard throughout the season, especially during a losing stretch in February that saw Oklahoma drop in the polls.

Speculation is that Young will be a one-and-done NCAA player, likely opting for the NBA draft come June. His stock in the draft has fluctuated. Still, a player who averages nearly 30 points per game is going to be hard to overlook by any NBA team.

Entering the tournament, Oklahoma’s seeding will be determined by their play down the regular season stretch and in the Big 12 tournament. Once the NCAA Tournament gets under way, anything can happen, and a player like Young can easily carry his team to the Final Four.

A FATHER’S GRIEF TURNS TO MENACE IN BRITBOX’S ‘TRAUMA’

After going through the worst day of his life, Dan Bowker is looking for someone to blame.

As played by John Simm (“Doctor Who,” “The Catch”) in the taut three-part psychological thriller “Trauma,” which begins streaming Wednesday, March 14, on Britbox, he’s a mid-level manager at a suburban London plant who learns he’s about to be downsized. With a wife and three kids to raise, that kind of news is always tough to take, and it’s enough to send Dan out to drown his shock and anger. But things go from bad to worse when he returns home to wife Susie (Lyndsey Marshal, “Rome,” “The Hours”) and they learn their 15-year-old son Alex (Albie Marber, “Outlander”) is at the emergency room after being stabbed.

At first, it appears the boy’s injuries are minor, and the surgeon on duty, Dr. Jon Allerton (Adrian Lester, “Hustle,” “Primary Colors”), confidently assures the frightened parents the boy will be OK. But that was before he opened him up and discovered the knife had nicked the heart. Despite what appears to be the doctor’s best efforts, the teen bleeds to death on the table.

Devastated, Dan looks for a target at which to channel his rage and grief, and with no suspect yet in custody, he chooses Jon. Fairly

or unfairly, he’s convinced the doc screwed up – and for that the unhinged dad will ruin his life.

“It was quite difficult emotionally to truthfully convey what he’s going through, this character, Dan,” Simm says, “and you’d have to go to places that are not particularly pleasant in your head, I guess, to, sort of, get there – I mean, I’ve got kids. While we were filming it, my son was 15, actually. So, yeah, it was a draining experience, but ultimately, as an actor, that’s what you want to be able to do. You want to portray these characters because conflict is drama, and with a script as good as this ... you just want to do it justice, really.”

As crazy and unreasonable as Dan is at times, it’s impossible to not feel his pain, and Simm, a twotime BAFTA nominee in his native England, does an excellent job of bringing to life a father out of his mind with grief. His co-star Lester was impressed.

“John had to carry the sharp end of the pain,” Lester says. “He had to, sort of, carry this belly full of grief, really, with every word that he spoke on the screen. It was full of grief and then anger.

“My job was easier,” he continues, “because I just had to react to him. So it’s on him to be believable and for me to go, ‘I don’t

know.’ ”
John Simm stars in “Trauma” Answers: 1) Barney Miller 2) Laura Linney 3) CBS’ “Criminal Minds”
4) Dave Barry
5) Jason Alexander
6) Doogie Howser, M.D.
7) “Archie Bunker’s Place”
8) Sgt. Vince Carter (played by Frank Sutton)
9) He was a sportswriter
10) Matt LeBlanc (“Friends”)
