Over the histor y of television, few brands have been as iconic and enduring as “ The Twilight Zone.”
Consider that the supernatural, Rod Serling-created suspense anthology now has its fourth series incarnation. The show enters the streaming dimension by premiering with two episodes Monday, April 1, on CBS All Access – with “Get Out” Oscar winner Jordan Peele as host and narrator, and also as an executive producer Among others sharing the latter job are Serling’s widow Carol, “ The X-Files” alum Glen Morgan, filmmaker Simon Kinberg (“X-Men: Apocalypse”) and TV veteran Greg Yaitanes (“Banshee”).
Normally to debut new episodes on Thursdays starting April 11, the latest “Twilight Zone” largely tells fresh stories. However, one of the franchise’s most celebrated tales, the monster-on-the-wingof-an-airplane thriller “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet,” gets a “reimagining” (as “Nightmare at 30,000 Feet”) with Adam Scott starring. Seth Rogen, Sanaa Lathan, Greg Kinnear, John Cho, Jacob Tremblay (“Room”), Allison Tolman (“Fargo”) and Rhea Seehorn (“Better Call Saul”) also will be in the “Zone.”
The original “Twilight Zone” – which CBS aired from 1959 to 1964, and also is on CBS All Access – remains a weekday staple on both Me-TV and Syfy, the latter of which also offers holiday marathons of the series. Though she was a producer of a 1994 “Twilight
Zone: Rod Serling’s Lost Classics” TV-movie, the new show marks Carol Serling’s most sustained creative involvement thus far.
“I am very happy” about the new version, she confirms. “It’s the fourth time around, and it’s an exciting venture for me. (The concept) has kept popping up, but I’m involved in a different way this time.” Indeed, 1983’s “Twilight Zone: The Movie” adapted four stories from the original show ... and featured Carol Serling as one of the passengers in “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet.”
She says she’s pleased to oversee the “Twilight Zone” brand now, “to the extent I can, of course. I give a general consultation and I’ve read all the scripts, and I’m very much in favor of what I’ve seen so far.” She’s also in favor of Peele’s involvement, “absolutely. There couldn’t have been a better (choice). Though he hesitated for a while, I’m so glad he decided to narrate this. I really feel the narration of these stories is very important.”
Rod Serling always deemed himself a writer first and foremost – borne out not only by his authoring of 92 “Twilight Zone” episodes, two of which earned Emmy Awards, but also by such scripts as his Emmy-winning “Patterns” and “Requiem for a Heavyweight.” Carol Serling believes that for “ The Twilight Zone” still to be ongoing, “Rod would be the most surprised. But after all these years, the subject matter is still timely.”

playing a character modeled on former prosecutor Marcia Clark in “The Fix”?
There was the immediate moment I walked in. I said, “Marcia, I’m not playing you, am I? Because that’s a lot of pressure.” Sarah Paulson did it incredibly well (in “The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Stor y”), and you can’t play your boss. I wouldn’t do it like that. And she said, “No, you are absolutely not playing me.”

Basically, we have the same origin stories. Marcia has two. She was married three times. I don’t have a husband, I don’t have children (in the series). Marcia stood and fought. She lost (the Simpson) case, but she wrote books. She’s got an unscripted show My character ran away and didn’t want to be in the spotlight. They are ver y dif ferent people. My character let that loss and that defeat define her, and Marcia didn’t. She just kept fighting.
Clark also is one of the writers, as well as an executive producer, of “The Fix.” How are you finding that?
Ever ybody says, “The best piece of advice anybody can give a writer is, ‘Write what you know.”’ Marcia wasn’t going to write a sciencefiction show about a spaceship. She wrote a female character that she could identify with, and we leaped from there.
It’s our job to keep people’s eyeballs on the screen after this original (thought), “What is this? Is that Marcia Clark?” That’s what makes it authentic, the problems women go through in that world and how to write for a woman. I’ve been acting in shows written by men that are 50 years old. They write for women. This time, I have three women writing for my character, and I can’t believe I saw it in my lifetime.

A: Several. In the immediate aftermath of “90210,” the late actor was featured on the prison drama “Oz” in 2001 and 2002, then he had the title role in the science-fiction drama “Jeremiah.” In the shor t-lived “Windfall,” Perr y played one of the winners of a lotter y jackpot, and he then co-starred in the drama “John From Cincinnati.” Perr y also appeared in multiple episodes of the medical myster y “Body of Proof,” and he went on to a similar run as a police detective’s incarcerated brother on “Ties That Bind.” Soon after the last show would come what turned out to be Perr y’s final series role, Archie’s father Fred on “Riverdale.”

The CBS comedy will return to the Thursday lineup when it begins its four th season April 18, with its ensemble cast – including James Brolin, Dianne Wiest, Colin Hanks and Betsy Brandt, to name a few – and its format of several shor t stories (and Shor t stories, since that’s the show’s family’s name) intact. That isn’t to say there won’t be some changes, though, as the network’s press release on the series’ return puts it: “This season, the Shor t family welcomes a few new family members and weathers an unexpected health crisis, plus some longhidden secrets are revealed in an unexpected way. ”

Rachael Ray brings ‘30 Minute Meals’ back to Food Network
Rachael Ray certainly has achieved a lot since, but “30 Minute Meals” largely is where it all began for her
As her eponymous, syndicated weekday show heads toward its 14th season, the popular food-andlifestyle personality launches a new version of her iconic Food Network cooking series Monday, April 1. As it starts with 30 new episodes over the first 30 days, a digital component will show online viewers extra material masked on television by commercial breaks.
“Can you believe it? We’re rollin’ old-school!,” Ray enthuses of the “30 Minute Meals” revival. “If you have the Food Network app, on April 1, they’ll put up five (of the new episodes) – so you can binge it. Then they’ll double-air an episode every day for the entire month of April.”
Ray maintains it was “ so fun” to get back to the premise of preparing a meal in a half-hour: “This time, instead of shooting one act at a time and then stopping the cameras and rehearsing the next act, we just kept rolling. If you watch online, you’ll see everything in real time. It’s like on ‘Saturday Night Live,’ when you see what happens behind the scenes. ”
“It’s fun to cook for a totally new generation, too,” notes Ray “I’m doing skillet pan pizza and Korean fried chicken and things that are trendy right now. We’re just really having fun with it, reinventing what you can do in 30 minutes but for millennials on up It’s food I would never have been able to roll with 20 years ago, because you just couldn’t get the products.”
Moreover, Ray adds there wasn’t “the diversity in diets that we (have) today Some episodes are vegetarian, so it’s not just traditional, mainstream Americana food. People eat with all types of disciplines now, so there’s more diversity in ’30 Minute Meals.’ That’s why we wanted to take over this beautiful building out in Brooklyn that has a bit of an industrial vibe, so that it would have a different look and a different feel.”
About to launch the shopping site Moxie Made (inspired by a pop-up shop she established at the annual South by Southwest event) plus a handbag line, Glens Falls, N.Y., native Ray always is generous about others entering the daytimetalk arena. She says she’s looking forward to Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall’s new shows this fall. “I think it’s wonderful,” Ray states. “I’m a huge fan of both. I think Tamron is so clever, and I adore Kelly Clarkson! The first time she came to my show, we just giggled like schoolchildren. She is so much fun to talk to and so insanely, wildly talented, it’s disgusting. In a good way.”

So far, NBC hasn’t given up any information about this Emmywinning drama’s third-season finale beyond the episode title: “Her,” which doesn’t tell us much. Certainly recent chapters of the Pearson family drama have been eventful, dealing with all three of the adult children: Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown) deteriorating marriage; Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) tensions with girlfriend Zoe (Melanie Liburd) over the question of having kids; and the fate of Kate’s (Chrissy Metz) premature infant. NBC has greenlit Season 4, needless to say.

In the new episode “The Waterlogged Cabin,” the team acquires what some term a “lurker” zombie property, which means it looks OK at first glance, but shows evidence of serious water damage once actual work begins. Complicating matters for them is a spell of rainy weather during their work, causing water to further penetrate the interior of the home and destroying their upgrades even as they make them. The only recourse is to rebuild the roof, which completely torpedoes their budget.
