Ger vais plays a widower with a grudge against the world in ‘After Life’

Tony is a guy firmly stuck in the second stage of grief: anger. And for that the world will pay.

In “After Life,” which begins streaming Friday, March 8, on Netflix, Ricky Gervais (“The Invention of Lying,” the U.K. version of “The Office”) is creator, writer and star of this dramedy that follows the journey of Tony, a small-town English journalist whose idyllic life is rocked to its core by the cancer death of his wife, best friend and love of his life, Lisa (Kerry Godliman, “Derek”). Though she still appears to him in videos made while she was undergoing treatment, they only serve to underscore the gaping void now in his life.

Initially suicidal, this otherwise nice guy resolves to live long enough to punish the world by saying and doing whatever he wants. So if someone is a jerk, he’ll let them know in no uncertain terms – and in Gervais’ typically acerbic fashion.

That’s seen in the opening episode, when Tony is confronted in an alleyway by two young toughs demanding money At this point, Tony doesn’t care if he lives or dies, so he basically tells them where to go and punches one in the face. They go scurrying and he feels an extraordinary freedom brought on by a loss of fear

“He’s sort of like a verbal vigilante and a bit more,” Gervais explains. “And you know, when he gets mugged and he fights back, he would never have done that when his wife was alive. And so I want the audience to vicariously live through his liberty in a sense. Because you know, we hand over our money to a mugger because

we might have a baby in a stroller. And he thinks, ‘I don’t care what happens to me.’ He thinks it’s a superpower.”

Of course, Tony’s family and friends – among them brother-in-law Matt (Tom Basden, “Plebs”) and pal Lenny (Tony Way, “Edge of Tomorrow”) – aren’t thrilled with this newfound superpower and would just as soon have the old Tony back. But Tony is mired in his grief and self-pity, getting drunk, trying heroin and striking up an unlikely friendship with Daphne (Roisin Conaty, “GameFace”), a prostitute with a dry wit who turns out to be the only person who really gets him.

“Because she doesn’t judge ...,” Gervais says. “She speaks her mind and she knows what he’s going through.

And then she was funny and she was smarter than he thought because, you know, he says, ‘Why do you do what you do?’ She said, ‘You’re only asking me that because of what I do.’ ”

In the end, the grieving process runs as long as it runs and it can’t be hurried or forced. Ultimately it is up to Tony to want to get better.

“We feel sorry for ourselves, so sometimes you need to talk to yourself a little bit,” Gervais says. “You know, you have to go, ‘Come on. Come on.’ Even his brotherin-law, he seems a bit wet and wimpy and a bit of a fussy sort of bore but he’s doing the right thing. He’s trying to save this guy he once knew who’s a nice guy and he bends over backwards (to shrug) off stuff. So yeah, you’re lucky if you’ve got people that care about you. ”

You’ve been a director as well as a star of “Gotham,” and now, you’ve written your soon-to-end series’ 98th episode (airing March 7) of the total 100. How was that experience for you?

It doesn’t air as the final episode, but it was the last one we shot. We’d already shot the (series) finale, then they ordered two more episodes – and what it allowed us to do was to put in some of the more emotional stor y lines we hadn’t been able to put in because of the plot.

I think that provided a really wonder ful, cathar tic way of ending the show The last scene we shot was a massive moment for two of our characters, one of them being me (as Jim Gordon). And (co-star) Erin Richards got to direct the episode, and that was great, to have another actor go through and understand that process.

How was it to write for your wife, “Gotham” co-star Morena Baccarin?

That was probably the most challenging thing! The notes you’ll get are quite direct. No, she’s ver y suppor tive and it was a real joy, all joking aside.

Had you always wanted to write and direct on “Gotham”?

don’t think that I knew from the beginning of my career that I wanted to do this. My subconscious way into this work was through my uncle, who’s a playwright and a screenwriter ... Rober t Schenkkan (“All the Way”).

I think I was always aware that was something I could do, and I found myself acting because that’s where people often star t, by per forming. (Writing and directing) was something I was always curious about, but I never really had the oppor tunity to pursue them. I’d shadow directors and familiarize myself with that process, and then by the time “Gotham” came around, I felt like I was ready.

Remembering daytime star Kristoff St. John

Q: I was very sorry to read of the passing of Kristoff St. John. How long was he on “The Young and the Restless”? – Ann McCormick, via e-mail

A: He began playing Neil Winters on the CBS daytime staple in 1991, and his final episode aired several days after his death last month. He earned two Daytime Emmy Awards (out of 11 nominations) for the portrayal, as well as 10 NAACP Image Awards.

Before that, St. John’s first daytime-serial role was Adam Marshall on NBC’s “Generations.” His primetime Woman,” “Roots: The Next Generations” (as the young Show,” “A Different World,” “Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper “Living Single,” “The Jamie Foxx Show,” “The Nanny” and “Ever ybody Hates Chris.”

Q: Is it true that “Mom” might not be back next season? – Joanne Carter, Columbus, Ohio

A: Not anymore. Both Allison Janney and Anna Faris were involved in contract renegotiations that led some to question whether the show would be back – particularly after Janney’s “I, Tonya” Oscar win last year – but the actresses reached agreements to continue not just for next season, but also for the seriocomic CBS show’s season after that.

Clans team up, for better and worse, on Food Network’s ‘Family Food Showdown’

Family, it is said, can be a blessing or a curse. In the case of the contestants on “Family Food Showdown,” it’s probably a little of both.

Premiering Sunday, March 3, on Food Network, the hourlong series pits two family teams of three against each other in three rounds of challenges designed to test their skills, recipes and family dynamics. Evaluating the final products is a rotating panel of judges including Kardea Brown, Clinton Kelly, Antonia Lofaso, Daphne Oz, Jake and Jazz Smollet, Tori Spelling, Jet Tila, Bryan and Michael Voltaggio and Molly Yeh. The winning clan in each of the 13 episodes takes home a $10,000 grand prize.

The competition here is pretty stiff as many of the contestants work in the food industry as chefs, restaurateurs and caterers, so the dishes that got to the judges were professional quality. Valerie Bertinelli, the series’ host, was impressed.

“Oh gosh, some of these dishes are amazing what they’re putting out,” the actress and host of Food’s “Valerie’s Home Cooking” says. “And it’s also fun to watch the family dynamic, to watch how they treat each other It’s very different when you’re watching a chef work on his own with the pressure of time and all that stuff But to watch these guys, the way they help each other, the way they sometimes don’t help each other – the family dynamics are very fascinating.”

Also fascinating for Bertinelli was watching the teams establish their pecking order “It was really interesting to see then who sort of took over in the kitchen and became the one

leading everybody,” she says. “It’s really fascinating to watch that happen because you assume one person’s going to really take the lead and it ends up being somebody else but you don’t know why And then you hear from them why and it’s always interesting.”

And of course, there is the communication, which is critical in any kitchen, but factor in the family dynamic and sometimes the communication might be a little too good, Bertinelli says.

“Sometimes, yeah. Sometimes just because someone knows how to finish your sentence, it doesn’t mean they should,” she says with a laugh.

“We saw all kinds of stuff,” she continues. “There’s tensions flaring, there’s tears, there’s laughter It kind of hits everything that we feel when we’re with our families from Thanksgiving dinner to some things that are not as traumatic. Sometimes Thanksgiving dinner can be super easy and sometimes not. So we kind of got a little bit of everything in this show.”
