‘What We Do in the Shadows’ brings more vampires to TV

Vampires have meant big business on television.

Reaching back to “Dark Shadows” and progressing through “ The Vampire Diaries” and “True Blood,” dwellers of the night have put their bite on popular shows. Now hoping for a similar effect is “ What We Do in the Shadows,” FX ’s take on a 2014 New Zealand “mockumentar y” that premieres Wednesday, March 27. Jemaine Clement and Taika Waititi, the writers, directors and stars of the original movie, remain involved as executive producers and

also in other ways: Clement (“Flight of the Conchords”) wrote the series pilot, which Waititi (“ Thor: Ragnarok”) directed.

The saga sees a film crew follow several longtime – as in hundreds of years – roommates in Staten Island, N.Y., where the vampires have individual aims while pursuing their shared mission of conquering the world. Kayvan Novak, Matt Berry, Nastasia Demetriou and Harvey Guillen play the horror-comedy’s central quartet, with Mark Proksch and Beanie Feldstein also among cast regulars.

Describing the show’s approach in discussing other creatures present in it, Clement says, “ There are some werewolves in the series. They’re not New Zealand werewolves. They’re American, so they swear a bit more. They’re East Coast and New York werewolves.” Clement adds that the supernatural characters are affected by situations “that are happening in the moment, as well as stuff that happened 200 years ago that is informing how they react to the world now. ”

After experiencing what it’s like to make a Hollywood blockbuster, Waititi muses, “ What happened to my career? It was really comfortable going back to (‘Shadows’) because we’d spent so long doing the film. And we edited the film for about 14 months, so we lived in that world for what seemed like an eternity Going back on the set felt very natural; we’re used to that style of working.” However, Waititi allows that now “with ten episodes, we have full character development and a lot more. ”

As much as the style of “ What We Do in the Shadows” is wellplanned, there’s room for the unexpected when the cameras are rolling. “ There’s some improvisation going on,” co-star Proksch confirms. “We may be in a scene, and Kayvan will come up with something on the moment that we don’t know that he’s going to say, and it will be really funny. That will always crack us up, so there’s a lot of that type of situation.”

Feldstein notes, “My character doesn’t really know these people, so she’s really taking it in – and I was taking it in. As Beanie, I was like, ‘ These are the funniest people I’ve ever seen in my life.’ And then as my character, I had to keep a straight face, which was very hard.”

OF ‘KNIGHTFALL’ ON HISTORY

What was it about your role of Talus that made you want to do “Knightfall”?

Well, I first was given sample episodes to watch of “Knightfall” when they asked me to be a par t of it. I had no real intention of doing anything like that, but I got hooked immediately, and it was riveting. I mean, it transpor ts you into this whole other world, and it’s so relatable. I mean, it’s seen through Landr y’s eyes. And I just thought, “I’ve never been of fered anything like this before.” I mean, I’d never done a character quite like this before, a religious zealot, a man of deep convictions and, yet, such a paradox. I mean, I remember thinking (as) he’s lecturing the troops and he says, “Once you become a Templar knight you shall become God’s executioners.” How could there be such a thing? I thought, “Thou shalt not kill.”

But that’s the thing, I was flattered that they would think of me for such a diverse character par t, and I thought, “Oh, I have to do this. I really do have to do this.” And so, to be par t of a largely British cast and in a period drama like this, which I’d never done before that’s what I look for, challenges to tr y not to repeat yourself, and this was cer tainly a challenge. Did the resemblance between the Knights Templar and the Jedi create any hesitancy for you?

I didn’t really think it through. But the truth of the matter is that I’m sure George Lucas came from so many dif ferent inspirations of his own, both from the movies and literature. He was probably thinking more of King Ar thur and the Knights of the Roundtable because it was more idealized and glamorous, cer tainly, than the Templar Knights, but there’s no question that his inspiration was rooted, par tially, in this mythology

‘SEAL Team’ is back in action now

A: The stor y is this: CBS pre-empted the David Boreanaz-starring adventure-drama for number of weeks, primarily to accommodate longer episodes of “Sur vivor”

“The World’s Best,” but the show is now resuming on Wednesdays. The delay of its return, after two months, also enabled the network to retain new episodes to take the series through the end of the current broadcast-television season. The ratings for “SEAL Team” have held reasonably steady from where they were during its first season. Even though CBS hadn’t made a decision on a Season 3 at the time of this writing, the show stands

a good chance of getting renewed – especially since, with the imminent departure of “The Big Bang Theor y,” the network likely will want ever y reliable performer it can keep.

A: The second season of the much-praised BBC America series stars April 7, with the intriguingly titled episode “Do You Know How to Dispose of a Body?” The show comes back on a high note, having won several prominent honors for its first season – including a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Critics’ Choice Television Award for title star Sandra Oh, plus a Television Critics Association Award for outstanding new program.

Spring has sprung –time to revamp the menu

In case you missed it spring arrived last week, bringing with it the anticipation of warmer weather, increased daylight, decreased heating bills and more time outdoors.

For the home chef, it also means turning over the family menu to include lighter fare, including more fruits and vegetables – and preferably not of the root variety So if you’re looking for some new ideas and flavors, just turn on your laptop and check out these videos and recipes from the Food Network website. Spring means fresher vegetables and fruits as produce increasingly comes from local sources. In “Spring Produce Guide” (www.foodnetwork.com/ recipes/packages/spring-produce-guide), viewers will find a bounty of information, such as Alex Guarnaschelli’s how-to’s on selecting it, cooking with herbs and uses for spring greens. There are also plenty of recipes, such as Rachael Ray’s green salad with strawberry balsamic vinaigrette, Anne Burrell’s strawberry-rhubarb crisp, and Ted Allen’s primavera with prosciutto, asparagus and carrots. Yum!
