Police, politicians and the public respond to ‘Shots Fired’ in Fox drama series

Many television programs like to tout themselves as “timely,” but there’s no question that “Shots Fired” truly is.

Premiering Wednesday, March 22, the limited-run Fox drama series – created and executive-produced by filmmaking spouses Gina Prince-Bythewood (“Love & Basketball”) and Reggie Rock Bythewood (“Notorious”) – focuses on two murders in a North Carolina town that seem racially motivated, with one victim black and the other white. An investigator and a special prosecutor (played by Sanaa Lathan and Stephan James) lead a probe for the Department of Justice, eventually suspecting power brokers including the state’s reelection-minded governor (Oscar- and Emmy-winning actress and director Helen Hunt) of a cover-up.

Also factoring into the story in major ways: a sheriff (Will Patton); one of his deputies (actor-singer Mack

Wilds, who was Tristan Wilds on “The Wire” and “90210”), who committed one of the shootings; the mother (Jill Hennessy) of the teen he killed; another local police veteran (“True Blood” alum Stephen Moyer); a pastor (Aisha Hinds); and a real-estate tycoon (Richard Dreyfuss, another Oscar owner) who also operates a privatized prison. Ron Howard and Brian Grazer’s Imagine Entertainment also is a production entity on the weekly 10-hour saga.

Though Reggie Rock Bythewood allows that events in Ferguson, Mo., were touchstones for “Shots Fired” as he and his wife mapped out the drama, he says, “We looked at various sorts of small Southern towns, and for many reasons, North Carolina just seemed to work well. It really rocked us in many ways when all the protests and all the sort of things that happened in Charlotte (occurred), watching it on TV and seeing some of the places where we shot,

where a lot of the protests and various troubles were going on.”

Co-star Dreyfuss adds, “We didn’t have to look into a crystal ball and know that something was going to happen in that town. It’s happening. It’s happening all over. We shot probably the most current show you’ll ever see. It’s exactly current with the world. It was Reggie supporting the script and talking to me about it that sold me, and then the world followed. As you watch this show, you’re going to be reminded very clearly of the most current headlines in your life. This is America.”

Still, Gina PrinceBythewood maintains, “We knew the story we wanted to tell. We knew what we wanted to deal with. For us, it’s about speaking to the truth, and we wanted to know the best way to do that.

“It’s very easy for people to watch the news and see a piece about a shooting, and if you don’t identify with who’s on the screen, you

DOUG BENSON’S

turn it off ... so we felt the best way to address this issue, and to get people who don’t normally go through this issue to understand, was to give them a way to understand. In flipping the narrative, it allows folks who don’t normally identify with characters to empathize with them. And through empathy, you can change.”

Hunt’s own experiences and awareness informed her desire to be a part of the “Shots Fired” cast. She reflects, “While many politicians I have kept at arm’s length I hold responsible for the criminaljustice system and the way it is, some of the politicians I voted for were complicit as well, so we sort of got interested in turning this governor into somebody who would be somebody I might vote for – and yet, she’s behaving in ways that if we look more closely, we might feel uncomfortable with. And ‘uncomfortable’ is really good when you’re trying to make drama.”

‘HIGH COURT’ IS ‘THE PEOPLE’S COURT’

& JUDGE WAPNER’S BEST LEGACY – WE’LL EXPLAIN

It goes without saying that in 1981, the TV landscape was vastly different than it is today. But in that year, a half-hour daytime show called “The People’s Court” made its debut in syndication – and the ripple effects of its influence are still being felt, more than three and a half decades later. That ongoing cultural effect can largely be attributed to the show’s original judge, The Honorable Joseph Wapner, who passed away February 26 at the age of 97.

Judge Wapner had already wrapped up a distinguished law career, including eighteen years of service on the Los Angeles County Superior Court, before he was approached to audition for “The People’s Court.” The show had been through many incarnations in its original pitching stage, but at this point had evolved into essentially the format we’re familiar with today: Producers would cherry-pick interesting small-claims filings in Southern California, and approach the plaintiff and defendant. If they agreed to dismiss any ongoing actions and to sign a binding arbitration agreeing to abide by Judge Wapner’s rulings, they could have their dispute litigated on TV. As an added incentive, the show paid both the plaintiff and defendant, and any judgment came from that money: Even if a party lost a case, their judgment subtracted and given to the other party, they still walked away with money in their pocket.

The show quickly gained incredible popularity, in part because of the thrilling voyeuristic aspect of watching real-life people in real-life conflict – but the true reason for the show’s initial popularity, and its

longevity, came from the man at the heart of the show, Judge Wapner. He was in his early sixties by then, with decades of real judicial experience – and his experience and gravitas, coupled with his patience and evenhanded consideration, kept pulling viewers in.

There’s an irony in knowing that just a day after Judge Wapner’s passing, a show called “The High Court” debuted on Comedy Central.

Hosted by prolific stoner Doug Benson – who helms several regular podcasts, including the long-running “Doug Loves Movies,” appears frequently on “@midnight With Chris Hardwick,” releases a new comedy album about once a year, has produced and/or been featured in several documentaries including “Super High Me,” and hosts a celebrity-studded YouTube show called “Getting Doug With High” – “The High Court,” like so many before, features real cases and binding arbitration.

The big twist? Benson is not actually a judge... And of course, he will be adjudicating these civil cases while high.

Benson is sharp and incisive even when thoroughly baked, so between him and his rotating cast of comedian friends serving as bailiff there are bound to be some big laughs. The difference is that the litigants will actually be in on the joke, which possibly makes this show the only true spiritual inheritor of the original incarnation of “The People’s Court.”

“The High Court” airs at 12 a.m Monday through Thursday, with double-episode half-hours on Thursdays on Comedy Central.

Cooking with your laptop – the YouTube way

Over the years, YouTube has become the place to go for how-to information on anything from appliance repair and home construction to investing in the stock market and even piloting a blimp.

But did you know you could use it to learn how to whip up some pretty impressive meals, too? Yes, chefs and cooks of all backgrounds and levels of experience and accomplishment regularly post their DIY videos there, just waiting for you to check them out and even try your hand. So if you’re at a loss as to what to make for dinner tonight – or you simply want to wow your friends and family with your prowess in the kitchen – here are a few food-oriented web series worth considering.

“Laura in the Kitchen”: Laura Vitale is probably one of the most famous chefs on YouTube, logging nearly 1,200 videos on the site since 2010 and even branching out into her own Cooking Channel series “Simply Laura.” Here, the focus is on Italian cuisine as she walks viewers through the preparation of everything from yogurt zeppoles and cod arrabbiata to chicken cordon bleu pizza and grilled scallops on the half shell. She even does requests.

“My Cupcake Addiction”: Bakers will want to check out this YouTube mainstay hosted by Aussie Elise Strachan, who offers up recipes and how-tos for a variety of confections, along with kitchen tips and travel videos. Her motto is “Life Is Sweet” and her more than three million subscribers aren’t likely to argue.

“My Virgin Kitchen”: Self-taught British chef Barry Lewis is your host for this series of how-to tutorials that puts the emphasis on ease and fun as he prepares home-cooked meals. Along with the recipes – which includes items such as fluffy Japanese pancakes, mini scones and carrot cake – there are also gadget

one pot; roasted potatoes. (In Stereo)

FOOD Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives Pork adobo grilled cheese; jambalaya.

tests and unusual segments like “Cooking With a Dishwasher.”

“Kawaii Sweet World”: Teen baker Rachel Fong hosts this informative series from the basement of her parents’ Northern California home, in which she walks viewers through recipes she herself came up with. “Kawaii” in Japanese means “cute,” and that reflects in confections such as Disney Tsum Tsum cake pops, no-bake unicorn cheesecake and gingerbread girl cake.

“ChefSteps”: A cadre of James Beard Awardwinning chefs not only demonstrate modern culinary concepts and recipes but they also explain how and why they work. From exotica such as lorighitta (braided pasta) and kouign-amann (a croissant-like pastry) to how-tos on the more mundane dishes like chicken or chuck roast, these folks aim to make viewers better in the kitchen and, as their motto says, “cook smarter.”

“Cooking With Dog”: No, it’s not what you think. A mysterious and unnamed Japanese chef prepares a range of dishes popular in Japan while canine host Francis narrates the recipes step by step in English. Bento boxes, sweet-and-sour meatballs, gyoza (fried dumplings) and yakisoba noodles are among the menu items prepared and consumed, no doubt followed by a belly rub and nice walk.

“You Deserve a Drink”: As the title suggests, libations are at the center of this 2014 Streamy Award-winning series hosted by actress/comedian Mamrie Hart, who offers up original cocktail recipes, then prepares and consumes them. After that, all bets are off. Guests such as actress Grace Helbig and “The Bachelor’s” Nick Viall join her as her partners in mixology.

Couple spruces up their Mississippi ‘Home Town,’ one house at a time

Erin and Ben Napier find that the most gratifying aspect of renovating homes for their new HGTV series “Home Town” is the morale change they see taking root around their adopted home of Laurel, Mississippi.

“Hurricane Katrina was detrimental to our town,” Erin Napier explains, “but it gets forgotten because it wasn’t on the coast and it wasn’t New Orleans. So we’ve really been battling, bringing it back from that hurricane.”

“This is something that small towns across America are going through,” Ben Napier adds. “They’re fighting as hard as they can to bring it back and so then to see outsiders come in and say, ‘Hey, I want to make this my hometown,’ that is a morale booster. It feels like, ‘OK, what I’m doing actually counts. It actually matters.’ ”

The hourlong series, which premieres Tuesday, March 21, with the first of 10 episodes, follows the couple as they help a buyer or buyers find a home that fits their needs and then helps them figure out how to best remodel it to its full potential and fit the homeowner’s personality. And personal touches are what the Napiers specialize in.

The twist here is that neither has a construction background nor are they licensed to sell real estate. Ben is a woodworker by trade with an eye for detail and Erin is a designer with a degree in graphic design. The heavy work is done by the craftspeople they bring in for the jobs and the selling is done by realtors.

But since they’re involved so heavily in their community, the Napiers know all about the houses in town, and so through word of mouth, clients come to them.

“We always know what houses are for sale even if it’s not for sale,” Erin Napier says, “just because I heard so-and-so at the grocery store say that Miss So-and-So is ready to move to a condo.

“It’s gossip,” she says with a laugh. “Gossip is how we find out what houses are available.”

Reese Witherspoon

What was your aim in producing, as well as starring in, “Big Little Lies”?

The constant sort of question for me is, how am I discovering something about a woman on film that I’ve never seen before?

And how am I creating something that hasn’t been done before?

With this piece, I feel like it was such a unique opportunity to have women of every age, every color talking about motherhood ... and that is sort of a common denominator.

OF “BIG LITTLE LIES” ON HBO

Parenthood is a great equalizer. And socioeconomically, it sort of brings these five disparate women together in a way that they clash, but they also understand and discover each other as similar spirits by the end of the series. I think that’s what I’m always looking for, something new and something challenging.

You’re reunited on “Big Little Lies” with your “Wild” director, Jean-Marc Vallee. How was that for you?

It’s hard for him to talk about how incredibly genius and amazing he is, but I’ve never worked with (another) director who felt the performances, who will sit and cry with you about what your character is feeling and is there with you.

He is not separate. He is not watching you. He is part of the performance, and he doesn’t see race, he doesn’t see gender. He’s just the most compassionate human who also loves the visual beauty and the music, which is extraordinary, and pushes the narrative forward with its sort of mystery.

You get to work with many female co-stars in “Big Little Lies,” a relative rarity for you. What was that experience like?

It’s so refreshing to get to spend time with women, and there would be times where I couldn’t break my character. I would call Nicole (Kidman) and go, “What do you think I should do with this scene? I can’t play this.” Or I would sit with Laura Dern in a car and go, “I just can’t say those words. What would you say if you had to say this?” Honestly, we just nurtured each other’s performances.

Jim Nantz of CBS’ coverage of the 2017 NCAA Basketball Tournament

“One thing I DVR’ed recently was the CBS special on Mary Tyler Moore. I loved Mary Tyler Moore. I met her once or twice at some CBS functions and was really sad to see her go. ... ‘Homeland,’ that is a must. We’ve been avid followers of Claire Danes and that show since day one. We love it. So that would be on there. It would be a smattering of sporting events but it’s not dominated by that. And then we record a lot of children’s programming. ... So we have the ‘Caillou’ library’ on DVR.”

Paul Rust of “Love” on Netflix “... If you looked at my DVR, it’d probably be all these like random movies. My tastes run from high to low, so over the weekend I watched like ‘Doctor Detroit’... . So that’s what I’d say is mostly on my DVR, is just a lot of movies... . I also like Turner Classic Movies and stuff, so there’s a lot of that on there.”

Kenny Smith of “Inside the NBA” on TNT

Charles Michael Davis of “The Originals” on The CW

“I just got done watching ‘Sneaky Pete.’ I really loved that show. ‘New Girl’ – Zooey Deschanel makes me laugh. And of course ‘Game of Thrones.’ ‘Westworld’ and ‘Black

“ ‘Power’ is one of my favorite shows. When that comes out, I love that show. I love a lot of the DIY shows – do-ityourself shows. The DIY shows are great. And all of the home improvement shows – ‘Flip or Flop,’ ‘Property Brothers’ and all of those kind of things, I watch those religiously.”

Stewart-Haas Racing switched from Chevrolet to Ford for the 2017 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series, something Kevin Harvick will be adjusting to as he seeks his ninth Cup Series win at Phoenix International Raceway. The Camping World 500 at Phoenix airs Sunday, March 19 on Fox.

That’s right, Harvick has eight career wins at Phoenix, the most of any other driver, including a victory in last year’s early season race. The big difference is this time around Harvick will be driving a Ford Fusion rather than the Chevrolet SS, which he’s been behind the wheel of for most of his career. Stewart-Haas Racing announced the change a year ago, and along with Harvick, fellow SHR members Danica Patrick, Clint Bowyer and Kurt Busch are also making the adjustment.

Change, at times, has been part of Harvick’s career. A standout in the Busch Series (now Xfinity Series) while driving for Richard Childress Racing, Harvick was thrust into the Cup Series following the death of Dale Earnhardt Sr. at the 2001 Daytona 500. Three weeks later he won his first Cup Series race at Atlanta Motor Speedway and at season’s end was named Rookie of the Year.

Harvick left Childress for Stewart-Haas Racing prior to the 2014 season and promptly won his first Cup Series Championship that season. He’s contended for the 2015 and 2016 Cup Series championships as well. Winning again at Phoenix and being among the top drivers won’t be easy in a new ride, but Harvick should be up to the task.

Checking in with RUMER WILLIS

Net Picks

It is said that growth, personal or professional, occurs when one steps out of one’s comfort zone and tries something new.

Count Rumer Willis as a true believer in that philosophy. Over the past two years, the 28-yearold singer/actress’ work has been plentiful and varied, ranging from her starring role as Roxie Hart in a Broadway production of “Chicago” and her “Over the Love” singing tour to her participation and victory in Season 20 of “Dancing With the Stars” and now, her gig as a recurring character in Fox’s “Empire, which resumes its third season Wednesday, March 22.

“It was, very much (satisfying),” she says of her triumph on “DTWS” in the fall of 2015, “and especially because it was something that was so out of my realm of comfort. You know dancing, I’ve always loved it but it’s never been my comfort zone so I think that that definitely pushed me to continue to want to step outside and challenge myself and it’s why I went on tour and now I think to a certain extent one of the reasons why I was able to get this show.”

In “Empire,” Willis plays Tory Ash, a brilliant but volatile singer/songwriter collaborating with Jamal (Jussie Smollett) on what will be his most important musical work yet.

“She’s definitely one of those kind of volatile rock star types who kind of just beats to her own drum, really does whatever she wants and doesn’t really have an awareness of anybody else,” Willis says. “And to a certain extent, I like the fact that she kind of does her own thing but she’s definitely a firestarter. ... And I think she kind of lights a fire under him and gets him remembering why he fell in love with music so much, and I think in a certain way they really kind of help each other get back on a better path.”

Favorite musical artist: “Oh man, too many to count but anything from Led Zeppelin to Aretha Franklin and Billie Holliday. I have a very wide range of love of music.”

“The Most Hated Woman in America,” www.netflix.com/title/80082242

Dropping Friday, this Netflix original film stars Oscar winner Melissa Leo (“Frozen River”) as Madalyn Murray O’Hair, an atheist activist who convinced the Supreme Court to overturn prayer in public schools and was kidnapped and murdered by a member of her own organization. The large and talented cast also includes Josh Lucas, Juno Temple, Sally Kirkland, Vincent Kartheiser, Rory Cochran, Adam Scott and Anna Camp.

“People Watching,” www.youtube.com/user/ Cracked

Winston Rowntree (“Subnormality”) is the creative force behind this animated anthology series on the humor website Cracked that is about, well ... see the title. The pilot episode, titled “Why Speed Dating Is Terrible,” is pretty self-explanatory and offers up smart dialog and pithy insights into singlehood and the virtues of knowing oneself.

“Wife of a Sneakerhead,” www.youtube. com/channel/UCNwMKdWV_bplO7pYCcrrwEQ

As the title suggests, this new comedy series from Erick Henighan follows the adventures of Earl (stand-up comic Anthony Moore, “Kevin Hart Presents: Hart of the City”), a guy whose addiction to athletic footwear places him in strange conflicts with his wife (Iyana A. Campbell, “Young and Naive”) and others with whom he comes in contact.

“Unicornland,” www. unicornlandseries.com“ Lucy Gillespie wrote, created and produced this definitely NSFW eight-episode comedy series that follows the adventures and misadventures of Annie (Lara Ramadei, “Compulsive Love”), a divorced New Yorker in her 20s who goes on a journey of self-discovery by dating and sleeping with couples — the “unicorns” of the title. Each episode features a date with a new couple, from Williamsburg hipsters to Wall Street power couples, and gives Annie more insight into herself.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on KTUL Dancing With the Stars

The season 24 premiere of this perennial fan favorite is also its 400th episode, and this season’s roster of celebrity performers is as diverse as ever. Olympic gold medalist Simone Biles, whose teammate Laurie Hernandez danced off with the trophy last season, is among the contenders, along with another past Olympian, figure skater Nancy

Kerrigan. Other stars include former “Glee” star Heather Morris, ageless Spanish music star Charo and World Series champ David Ross, the show’s first baseball star.

9 p.m. on KOED Independent Lens

Winner of a prestigious award at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival, “The Bad Kids,” from filmmakers Keith Fulton and Lou Pepe, spotlights Black Rock Continuation High School, one of California’s alternative high schools. Located in a poverty-stricken and isolated Mojave Desert community, the school offers a last-ditch shot at a diploma to at-risk students who have fallen so far behind that they’ve been designated lost causes by “the system.”

9 p.m. on BRAVO Sweet Home Oklahoma

This new unscripted series follows four friends — Jennifer Welch, Josh Welch, Lee Murphy and Angie “Pumps” Sullivan — as they bring their off-kilter liberal perspectives to everyday life moments in very conservative Oklahoma City. In the series premiere, “The Good, the Bad and the OK,” Jen and Lee try to get the old Angie “Pumps” back, while Josh and Jen experience a role reversal while adjusting to life after marriage.

TUESDAY

7 p.m. on KOED American Masters

A legendary photographer is recalled in “Dorothea Lange: Grab a Hunk of Lightning,” clearly a labor of love for her granddaughter, Emmy winner Dyanna Taylor — the program’s producer, director, writer and narrator. Lange captured images of American history at its most tumultuous, her shot known as “Migrant Mother” an enduring symbol of the Depression. World War II internment camps and the Dust Bowl were among her other subjects.

8 p.m. on OWN If Loving You Is Wrong

The sleek and sexy drama that follows a diverse assortment of characters who share a middle-class neighborhood returns for another season that wrings compelling storylines out of everyday, relatable life events. In the season premiere, Kelly (Edwina Findley Dickerson) learns the shocking whereabouts of her neighbor Ramsey (Trevante Rhodes). Amanda Clayton, Heather Hemmens, Zulay Henao and April Parker-Jones also star.

9 p.m. on KOED Frontline

Many of the world’s superpowers at present are almost singlemindedly focused on vanquishing the radical Islamist group ISIS, but that’s only a first step, as the new episode “Iraq Uncovered” reveals. Using on-theground reporting, this documentary goes to a region where the Islamic State has been pushed out, leaving behind a power vacuum. Militias are working with the military in a fight for control, but the ongoing strife takes a toll on civilians in the area.

9 p.m. on SYFY Cosplay Melee

Yvette Nicole Brown (“Community”) is host for this new weekly reality competition series, tied to the popular fan phenomenon in which otherwise ordinary folks go to elaborate lengths to take on the identity of a favorite character. Each episode finds four contestants competing to create full costumes and compelling back stories for their characters of choice; the winner receives $10,000. In the series premiere, the cosplayers are tasked with creating an original character inspired by their favorite sci-fi space opera

9 p.m. on TRUTV

Upscale With Prentice Penny

Writer-producer Prentice Penny (HBO’s “Insecure” sitcom) steps in front of the camera for a change as host of this new 12-episode lifestyle series that offers tips on how to enjoy the good life, even if you have to stick to a budget. The premise of the show is that cost and quality aren’t necessarily directly related and savvy persons are able to find an “elevated life” in some respect at virtually any price point.

9 p.m. on USA Chrisley Knows Best Family and friends rally to help, or at least try to, as Savannah struggles painfully with a project for her clothing line in a new episode called “Mannequin Challenge.” Elsewhere, after Todd gives him an ultimatum, Chase is willing to try just about anything to get puppy Lilo’s behavior under control.

WEDNESDAY

7 p.m. on KJRH Blindspot

With some invaluable help from Nas (Archie Punjabi), Jane and Weller (Jaimie Alexander, Sullivan Stapleton) finally come face to face with the inside source Nas had within Sandstorm. They also have a dramatic confrontation with an old foe in the new episode “Evil Did I Dwell, Lewd Did I Live.”

7 p.m. on KOKI Shots Fired

A North Carolina town is rocked by shootings that may have been racially motivated in this new, clearly timely limited-run drama series from filmmaking spouses Gina PrinceBythewood and Reggie Rock Bythewood. Sanaa Lathan and Stephan James play investigators for the Department of Justice who

come to suspect the state’s governor (Helen Hunt) isn’t telling all she knows. Richard Dreyfuss, Stephen Moyer and Tristan Wilds also are in the ensemble cast.

8 p.m. on KOKI Empire Lucious (Terrence Howard) puts everyone on notice as he announces his new music project called Inferno as this series returns for its spring premiere with “Sound & Fury.” That power play only makes Cookie (Taraji P. Henson) double down on her determination to knock her ex off his throne for good. Elsewhere, while in rehab, Jamal (Jessie Smollett) becomes friends with musician and fellow patient Tory Ash (Rumer Willis).

8 p.m. on DISC

The Last Alaskans

A new generation steps into this time-tested but demanding way of life as Season 3 of this compelling reality series opens. Tyler and Ashley, a pair of eager young trappers expecting their first child, and Charlie Jagow embark on this challenging new lifestyle, as veteran wilderness resident Bob Harte leaves Alaska after 40 years in the bush. Another longtimer, Heimo Korth, similarly plans to pass his torch to daughter Krin.

9 p.m. on COM

The Comedy Jam

This offbeat new series features an assortment of celebrities who first talk about a cherished memory they will always associate with an iconic song, followed by that celebrity’s performance of the tune before a live studio audience. Tonight’s season premiere finds actress and comic Tiffany Haddish belting out Tina Turner’s “Proud Mary,” talk show host Chris Hardwick and guitarist Richie Sambora teaming up for Bon Jovi’s “Wanted Dead or Alive” and actor-comic Bobby Lee singing Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy.”

THURSDAY

7 p.m. on KOKI

MasterChef

Former “Top Chef” champ Richard Blais is guest judge for the new episode “Junior Edition: Pie-Eyed,” which — as the title suggests — finds the Top 12 young chefs, working in four teams of three, cranking out as many pies as they can manage in 10 minutes. The winning team is safe from elimination in the big challenge, which tasks them with using a blow torch to make an appetizer, entree or dessert from ingredients in the show’s pantry.

7 p.m. on KQCW

Supernatural Mary (guest star Samantha Smith) fails to include some critical information when she seeks help from Sam, Dean and Castiel (Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles, Misha Collins) in “Stuck in the Middle (With You).” The British Men of Letters turn out to be part of her mission, and they follow suit in exactly the way the others would have expect-

ed — which likely would have made them abstain from assisting her.

9 p.m. on KJRH

The Blacklist: Redemption

A new episode called “Borealis 301” finds Tom and Mr. Solomon (Ryan Eggold, Edi Gathegi) going under cover on an international flight that they believe — and, indeed, hope — will be hijacked by a ring of ruthless thieves who steals highly classified material. Meanwhile, Howard (Terry O’Quinn) urges Tom to search for proof of a conspiracy that was orchestrated by Scottie (Famke Janssen).

9 p.m. on FX Baskets

This defiantly nutty and off-the-wall comedy series sends in the clowns as it rings down the curtain on Season 2 with a finale called “Circus.”

As usual, we’re not entirely sure what to make of the episode summary, which advises that Christine (Louie Anderson) turns to Arby (for comfort, one assumes), after Chip (Zach Galifianakis) joins the Russians.

FRIDAY

6:30 p.m. on DISN

Tangled: The Series

Mandy Moore and Zachary Levi reprise their roles as Rapunzel and Flynn Rider from Disney’s hit 2010 computer-animated movie comedy in this new series adaptation, which follows their characters, along with several other new ones. In the first episode, Rapunzel and Cassandra (voice of Eden Espinoza), her tough-as-nails handmaiden, go to a wizard’s cottage to learn what has happened to Rapunzel’s hair. The voice ensemble also includes Julie Bowen, Clancy Brown, Sean Hayes and Jeffrey Tambor.

7 p.m. on KJRH Grimm

Late Night With Seth Meyers

White House press secretary Sean Spicer said today that President Trump will not be watching the Academy Awards this Sunday. But I bet Spicer will, since he’s nominated for most animated short. Vice President Mike Pence today toured a factory in St. Louis. Pence was like, “It’s so great to be back here in the place where I was built.” President Trump said today that he very much enjoyed his tour of the National Museum of African American History and Culture yesterday. One employee was like, “Sir, that was a basketball game.”

The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

Trump’s frequent visits to his Mar-aLago resort have many wondering if he’ll stick with the presidential tradition of visiting Camp David. While others would just be happy if he stuck with the tradition of visiting the White House. You’re still president on the weekends, you

know that? All right, good. The Late Show With Stephen Colbert

This isn’t the only Obama action Trump’s rolling back. He’s going to repeal the Affordable Care Act, rescind environmental protections — he’s already replaced Michelle’s vegetable garden with a sandbox full of onion rings.

According to the administration this wasn’t about persecuting any group; it was strictly a legal concern [clip of Sean Spicer]: “The president has maintained for a long time that this is a states’ rights issue.” Oh, grow a pair! Is there a more cowardly phrase than “this is a states’ rights issue?” “Honey, do you like my new haircut?” “Uh, I’m gonna leave that decision up to the states.”

The Late Late Show With James Corden

The Washington Post has done an analysis of Trump’s first month as president and says that during that time, Trump has made 133 false or misleading statements. That’s right, 133 false statements. Isn’t that — [mimes listening to earpiece] sorry, it’s absolutely 134. It’s 135 — it’s — it’s 137. Forget it, we’ll be here all night.

The Washington Post says that he has lied over 130 times in just his first month. If you do the math, he’s releasing an average of four false or misleading statements per day. On the bright side, you can’t say Trump isn’t getting anything done. Now the most shocking thing in this report is that it’s only been 34 days. How? It feels like he’s halfway into his second term, doesn’t it?

This is the first administration where the public is aging faster than the president.

But it makes sense that Trump tells the most fibs of any president — even the color of his skin is a lie.
