‘The Fix’ is in: Robin Tunney stars in Marcia
Clark-inspired law drama
Former prosecutor Marcia Clark is a prime force behind a new law drama, but its star stresses that she’s not playing Clark.
After her long run on “ The Mentalist,” Robin Tunney returns to series work as ABC’s “ The Fix” premieres Monday, March 18. Not unlike the result for Clark (an executive producer and writer of the show) in the O.J. Simpson trial, Tunney’s Maya Travis suffers a defeat in tr ying to make a murder case against a celebrity (“Lost” alum Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje). She then goes off the grid for several years ... until the same actor becomes a murder suspect again, and Maya is brought back into the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office to pursue justice once more.
The pleasant Tunney says of Clark, “Playing her would just be too stressful. As an actor, it doesn’t give you any freedom if you’re just being the person who’s sitting on the set with you. You feel like you can’t own it properly This is (Clark’s) origin stor y, but she has two children and has been married three times. This character has no children and has never been married.”
For any differences between fact and fiction, “ The Fix” does draw a bead on today’s American legal system and what its flaws might be. “Maya is very much about right and wrong, and she cannot believe that the system failed the victim,”
explains Tunney. “If you have enough money and have a fancy legal team, you can buy yourself out of a murder (charge), and that’s really depressing for her.”
Additional “Fix” cast members include Adam Rayner (“ Tyrant”), Merrin Dungey (“Alias”), Breckin Meyer (“Franklin & Bash”) and two veterans of “Necessar y Roughness,” Marc Blucas and Scott Cohen. However, Tunney admits she’s still adjusting to her new experience of being No 1 on a series call sheet.
“I learned so much from (star) Simon Baker on ‘ The Mentalist,’ ” she reflects. “He has such a strong work ethic, and he would give tiny little hints along the way, and I listened things like, ‘ When you do a walk-and-talk, you have to walk quickly if you want to give the scene urgency.’ I feel like I was so lucky to get paid to watch somebody who was really good at it at work.”
Also fairly new for Tunney is being a working mom: Her first child, Oscar, turns 3 in June. “I’d wanted it for so long,” she notes. “I did a few movies before this and when I went to work in the morning, he’d either be sleeping or standing at the window, staring at me going down the driveway and sobbing. So, I was like, ‘ This show had better be good!’ ”

Were you comfortable with your character Cara’s switch from skeptic to believer, regarding the social-media account that’s supposedly run from heaven, on “God Friended Me’?
I think, for Cara, she can’t help but notice all of the signs that have been happening with the God account. And I think more than believing or not believing, for her, it feels so good to help people – and she gets to see that pay of f. It’s not something where you donate to a charity and you hope it works out.
She actually is physically meeting these people, having conversations with them, helping them out, writing stories about it that then fur ther help other people. So I think that’s what really draws her to the God account and to Miles (played by Brandon Micheal Hall) and to helping these people.
You have a fan base from other projects as well, including “The Flash.” What has their reaction to “God Friended Me” been?
Honestly, it’s been really, really great feedback. I think our show makes (the theme) available to ever yone. Young, old it doesn’t matter A lot of my fans, which happen to be a younger

Titans of baking go head to head on Food Network’s ‘Buddy vs. Duff ’
When it comes to competition, Buddy “Cake Boss” Valastro and Duff “Ace of Cakes” Goldman are no strangers to each other They’ve encountered each other before, most notably in the early 2000s on “Food Network Challenge.” Outside the TV realm, they have an East Coast connection, as Valastro has his Carlo’s Bakery in Jersey City, N.J., while Goldman’s Charm City Cakes lies 180 miles down I-95 in Baltimore. Both men have a professional respect for each other and enjoy a friendly rivalry.
Which is what these seasoned pros bring to the kitchen in “Buddy vs. Duff.” In the sixweek competition series airing Sundays on Food Network, these accomplished pastry artists utilize their design skills, techniques and imaginations to whip up delectible creations and impress judges Sherry Yard and Keegan Gerhard and guest experts including Penn & Teller, Christina Anstead (“Flip or Flop”), Gesine Prado (“Baked in Vermont”), Aarti Sequeira (“Guy’s Grocery Games”) and Hannah Hart (“My Drunk Kitchen”).
Valastro, for one, is well aware of what he’s up against.
“I think that Duff is meticulous in what he does,” he says of his adversary. “I think that he really understands tastes and flavor profiles. I think that he’s a fierce competitor, I really do I think that his attention to detail is second to none. I don’t want to say that I underestimated him but you know, if we were going at it again I’d kind of go in with a different disposition and my do’s and don’t’s of what I have to make or what I have to do.”
In this week’s episode, the two bakers’ creative talents come to the fore when they’re tasked with making cakes inspired by Bollywood.
“When I close my eyes and I think of Bollywood,” Valastro says, “I just think of so many different things and I think of the colors and the creativity of what you can do And being here in Jersey, we have a really big Indian culture and I’ve got a lot of Indian friends. So I’ve been to a lot of Indian weddings and I kind of know how they do it up, so it was really awesome for me to be part of that ... because I love the food, I love the people, the culture. And it was truly like ‘Yeah!’ when I found that one out. ”
Doing “Buddy vs. Duff ” brought Valastro back to his roots. He began his career in competition, which he says served to sharpen his skills. So this experience proved to be a welcome challenge for him.
“It kind of brings you back to like being reborn again, being a kid,” he says. “You get that flutter in your heart when you’re standing there, when you’re making the stuff, when you’re creating the stuff So for me it was really an amazing experience.”
