Circus comes to town Thursday

Circus performer Carolina Alvarado admits to some trepidation when she performs a high-in-theair act for the first time.

“After a while, you start to love every aspect about it,” Alvarado said. “You love the rush. You notice all the people staring at you and you get that rush from it. You become very happy when you hear all those people clap and cheer you on.”

Alvarado, 17, hopes to hear some Muskogee cheers when she performs with the Carden Super Spectacular Circus. The circus will be 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Muskogee Civic Center.

However, people can ride some circus animals and meet performers an hour before the show.

Alvarado said she usually does three aerial acts for the circus.

One is an aerial web, which involves a long rope with a knot on top, she said.

“You climb all the way to the top then you spin and you do nice tricks,” Alvarado said.

She does another act with her 15-year-old brother, Sebastian.

“He hangs from a bar,” she said. “While he holds me, we both need a lot of strength. Using both of our strength and training, we do hand-

to-hand things.

A third act is the hair hang.

“That explains what it is,” she said. “You hang from your hair.” She said she grows her hair down to her waist to do the hair hang.

However, she said she recently got her hair cut, so she won’t do it in Muskogee.

Alvarado said the cradle is the most challenging.

“You have to learn timing, you have to learn communication,” she said. “You have to communicate through the entire time. You have to know when to do everything. And it takes a lot of strength to get

Citywide youth musical on tap for Sunday

Event aims to remind youth of the black heritage, struggles overcome

Young people from across Muskogee will lift their voices and sing at the NAACP City Wide Youth Musical.

The musical will be 6 p.m. Sunday at St. Mark Baptist Church.

The Rev. Rodger Cutler, church pastor, said the musical is a way to show Muskogee “we do have good kids in our community.”

“We do have kids that are promising and have a full future,” he said. “It is the emphasis of the NAACP to do all we can do to lift our young people to a brighter future.”

Cutler is president of the Muskogee chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored

People.

“It’s a time for our children not only to sing, but be reminded of the struggles we have had to overcome in order for us to be where we are today,” Cutler said. “It’s an opportunity for them to be part of our black history, our heritage.”

Marsha Newton, who will direct the choir, said today’s youth have something to say.

“Before, youth were told to be seen and not heard,”

Newton said. “But this is a new generation. We have to include them in what’s going on.”

Newton said she put the musical’s songs together to share a message.

“The very thing that helped get us to where we are today as a people was relying on the Lord for strength to endure,” Newton said. “Even today, as we struggle from day to day, it is a whole lot easier when we know we know we can rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us.”

Newton said she and other leaders seek to instill that notion into young people.

“The more you know, the more options you have when you come across a problem,” she said. “Then, you don’t think ‘well, I just have to kill myself.’ If you instill it into them when they’re young, then, when they have those issues, they will have that tool to help them to cope.”

She said the goal this year, as it was last year, is “using

the young people to reach the young people, and to keep them involved with something positive.”

“ When you’re doing something positive, it helps the kids improve their self-esteem,” she said. “It helps them to realize there’s something good out there for them.”

Cutler said this is the second year NAACP has conducted the musical.

“Last year, we had more than 50 voices in our choir,” Cutler said. “It was a wonderful event.”

Last year, youth came from St. Mark Baptist, Central Missionary Baptist, Antioch, Christ’s Kingdom Builders, Dean’s Chapel, New Jerusalem Baptist, among others.

“Any church within our community, young people are welcome,” Cutler said.

in position.”

Alvarado said she’s a fifth-generation circus performer.

She said her grandmother “did everything,” including aerial acts.

“My father was on the flying trapeze with his brother, sisters and his father,” she said. “Dad also was a hand balancer with his siblings.”

She said her parents met in the circus. Alvarado’s mother was a ringmaster.

Alvarado said she’s been performing since she was 11.

“But I’ve been in the ring with my mother since I was 3 years old,” she said. “There are pictures of me smiling when I was a little baby.”

Alvarado said the Carden circus tours for 40 weeks.

“We travel all around the United States,” she said. “We work every day, five to seven days a week.”

As a result, Alvarado said she is home-schooled.

“There are a lot of children in the circus,” she said. “We all have to balance out school and work and practice. But it’s all worth it in the end.”

The circus also will feature other aerial acts, trapeze, tightrope and animal acts.

Bowling a great sport for fellowship

First three weekends in March, the Thunderbowl in Tahlequah has been host to City Tournament

Bells ring, friends cheer and a strike is celebrated – in bowling, which means all 10 pins were knocked down at the same time.

At Tahlequah’s Thunder Bowl, 833 W. Choctaw St., teens, families and children can bowl, play foosball and other games, and eat a burger or sandwich cooked fresh at the grill. They can also celebrate birthdays, play in leagues, and compete in tournaments. There is an onsite pro shop that can drill holes and engrave names.

The first three weekends in March, the Thunder Bowl has been host to a City Tournament open to everyone with singles, doubles and teams. It’s the first time to host this regional tournament.

Recently, three generations of the Feeling family were enjoying an evening out together. It’s something they do at least twice monthly. Laughter from their table spilled out across the room, and it was clear the group was enjoying their time together.

Stacey Brown said she was there with her parents, daughter, son, nephew and his wife – almost the whole family.

“We like to keep them active, spend time together and enjoy fun, friendly competi-

tion,” said Brown.

They sometimes meet in Tulsa to bowl, but they said they like the Tahlequah bowling alley better.

Eric Doyeta, Brown’s nephew, and his wife, Hannah, live in Tulsa, as do some other family members.

The group totals almost 30 people – including significant others – when they all

get together.

“It’s fun to see everyone together, and it’s important,” said Doyeta.

Jordan Marshall, 19, is Brown’s daughter and lives in Tahlequah. She came to bowl to be with family.

“I love my family. They picked bowling and we’ve

been doing it a couple of months. We love doing everything together,” said Marshall.

Chris and Durbin Feeling are the grandparents in this gathering.

“It’s a chance for us to get together and for fellowship. We like to get together,” said Chris, who

modestly said she’s not that great of a bowler.

Durbin disagrees.

“She beat us the last time,” he said. “I like to bowl, it’s good exercise.”

He started in high school.

“It’s fun,” he said. “My very first game I rolled a 275 and I haven’t done that since.”

Some may wonder if bowling is a challenge for senior citizens like the Feeling elders.

“I feel good, and I don’t get sore,” Chris said. “I like hanging out.”

They all agreed that bowling is a good opportunity to connect with others.

“It’s good for all generations to hang out together. Spending time with his grandparents is important to him [Eric], so it’s important to me,” said Hannah.

Brown said last time they bowled, they had her 2-year-old

granddaughter with them, and that meant four generations hanging out together.

“The aim is to keep family together and close,” said Chris. “When the weather gets good, we’ll find something else, like volleyball, to do.”

With the numerous activities and controlled climate, a bowling alley makes a great escape from the wind, rain, cold or heat a season may offer.

‘Station 19’ opens for firefighters with debut of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ spinoff

F or all the series Shonda Rhimes has made, only one has been a direct spinoff of the one that established her executive-producing cred, “Grey’s Anatomy.”

Until now.

First, “Private Practice” transferred characters from the very-long-running medical drama, and now comes “Station 19.” Getting its ABC debut Thursday, March 22, the saga of Seattle firefighters makes Jason George’s Ben Warren its primary link to the parent show – though “Rosewood” alum Jaina Lee Ortiz appeared on “Grey’s” earlier this month in her new role as Ben’s firehouse colleague Andy Herrera.

Andy pressures herself to follow in the footsteps of her father, the station’s captain (Miguel Sandoval),

while others on the team face their own challenges.

Grey Damon (“Aquarius”), Danielle Savre (“Too Close to Home”), Barrett Doss, Alberto Frezza, Jay Hayden (Rhimes’ “The Catch”) and Okieriete Onaodowan also are in the ensemble cast ... with Ellen Pompeo appearing in the premiere as (of course) Dr. Meredith Grey.

“Station 19” showrunner Stacy McKee, who also hails from the “Grey’s Anatomy” team, says that “If you’ve followed Ben Warren as a character, he’s changed careers a couple of times, and he always goes after the thing that he thinks is going to satisfy him the most in the moment. And he’s never satisfied if he’s stuck somewhere that isn’t fulfilling him.”

PHILIP WINCHESTER

Musing that he’s “going to play Ben Warren for the rest of my career,” actor George admits he had mixed feelings about moving on. “I was just like Ben was,” he reflects. “I personally was caught more emotional than I expected about leaving the ‘Grey’s’ family. I’m saying goodbye to people. I’m giving hugs. Then, all of a sudden, I realize I’ll probably be back in about two months (in a crossover stint). So, I’m not leaving home entirely.”

Though Rhimes – who recently signed a deal to make projects for Netflix – has maintained she isn’t trying to emulate producer Dick Wolf and his “Chicago” empire of NBC dramas, a certain synergy will exist between her Seattle-set shows while “Station 19” keeps its own style.

Jason George stars in the “Grey’s Anatomy” spinoff “Station 19,” premiering Thursday on ABC.

“We’re in the neighborhood,” allows “Sons of Anarchy” veteran and two-time Emmy winner Paris Barclay, an executive producer and frequent director on the new drama. “It should feel like ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ certainly, when we’re on those ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ sets. It’s just a high-quality look, but as we went to the fire station, we tried some things. We tried to put you in the fire with the firefighters and make that a little bit more active.

“We want the ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ fans to love this show the way they love ‘Grey’s,’ ” notes Barclay. “We want them to be comfortable. It’s like having dinner at your uncle’s, but your mother’s still cooking.”

Philip Winchester initially wasn’t expecting to become a fulltimer on “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” but he’s very happy that it’s turned out that way.

The actor has transferred his Peter Stone character from the finished “Chicago Justice” to another of executive producer Dick Wolf’s NBC dramas, with the Wednesday show making the prosecutor – and son of the original “Law & Order’s” nowdeceased Ben Stone – the replacement for ex-Assistant District Attorney Rafael Barba (former series co-star Raul Esparza). Since Stone played a big role in what ultimately became Barba’s exit, he and Lt. Olivia Benson (Mariska Hargitay) aren’t exactly warming up to each other quickly.

“When I got that script, it was as much a surprise to me as it was to the audience,” the friendly Winchester says of the February episode that saw the “SVU” changing of the prosecutorial guard. “They really shot (Stone) out of a cannon; there was no messing around. It was like, ‘I’m Peter Stone. This is what I do. Take it or leave it.’ And I think it had to be like that.”

“It’s been amazing,” Winchester maintains. “Without too much hyperbole, the reason the show has been going for 19 years is Mariska. She’s created this character who cares so much and believes so much in what she’s doing, it comes through on camera. And what’s cool about that is that that’s who she is, too.”

Also returning to the Cinemax action series “Strike Back” soon for its last two episodes of the season, Winchester reports that however strained the on-screen “SVU” relationship between Stone and Benson may appear, Hargitay (also an executive producer of the show) has been nothing but welcoming to him.

The Pink Tea Cup goes Miami Beach in Season 2 of WE tv’s ‘Hustle & Soul’

Big doings are in the works for chef Lawrence Page and the staff at the Pink Tea Cup in Season 2 of WE tv’s “Hustle & Soul.” He just has to get everyone on the same, er, page.

As the new season gets going Thursday, March 22, Page is in the process of expanding the Pink Tea Cup brand beyond the four walls of his 20seat Brooklyn eatery by opening up a 250-seat restaurant 1,300 miles to the south in Miami Beach. This means more flights to and from, a crushing workload, and a lot of seeing who of his existing staff is up to the task of an exponential expansion. This while keeping the original location up and running, occasionally cooking and refereeing personality clashes among his spirited employees.

“We’re opening up in March,” Page says, “so we’re shooting in two restaurants at the same time back and forth. And I think that was the challenge, you know, leaving Miami and coming back to Brooklyn and shooting in Brooklyn and going back to Miami and taking your whole staff with you and trying to let everybody know this is going to be a franchise ... but I need a winning team with me and you guys need to learn how to work together to make this happen. That was pretty much the challenge, getting everybody to see who’s going to be on board this year, and who’s going to run with us for the second season.”

Some faces from the first season will be gone and new ones will come on board. As usual, there will be staff drama and love triangles, some involving

‘Krypton’ visits Superman’s homeland while it still existed

Net Picks

“Alexa & Katie,” www.netflix.com

Heather Wordham (“Hannah Montana,” “Reba”) created this heartwarming drama series about the friendship between two teens starting high school: Alexa (Paris Berelc, “Mighty Med,” “Lab Rats: Elite Force”), a cancer patient with an outgoing personality and an unceasing zest for life, and Katie (newcomer Isabel May), her quirky, awkward best pal. Tiffani Thiessen (“White Collar,” “Saved by the Bell”) also stars in this series that begins streaming on Friday.

Even if you know a lot about Superman’s home planet, there’s a lot that you don’t.

The Syfy series “Krypton” is determined to prove that as it premieres Wednesday, March 21, by diving back two generations before the infant Kal-El was sent toward Earth ... moments before his birthplace exploded. The show focuses on his grandfather Seg-El (played by Cameron Cuffe, seen opposite Meryl Streep in “Florence Foster Jenkins”), who spends his younger years as an outcast along with the rest of his family, yet still tries to resolve the discord among leaders and possibly save Krypton.

With Shaun Sipos (“The Vampire Diaries”) appearing

as time-traveling DC Comics character Adam Strange, “Krypton” has gestated for several years. Executive producer David S. Goyer – a Superman veteran through his work on the movies “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice” – explains, “I said from the get-go that I wanted to shoot in Europe, and we’ve got a significant visual-effects budget for the show, very significant. Frankly, the post-production period is almost double that of your average show; it just takes a long, long time. My youngest son, who is three, wasn’t born yet when we started this thing.”

Adds Geoff Johns, the president and CEO of DC Entertainment, “It also has

such a different look from other superhero shows out there. So many are shot in Vancouver, and we wanted this to have a very different, specific look. It’s also on an alien world, so we’re not going to see cityscapes that you would normally see in other shows.”

Though he’s not actually portraying Superman, British actor Cuffe recognizes the responsibility of representing the overall franchise in any form. “I’ve always loved Superman,” he notes. “We were all sort of saying we can’t really remember when Superman came into our lives ... he’s just always been there. And as far as the pressure of playing the role goes, it’s a good thing. It’s something that keeps you

grounded. As a fan, I know exactly what is riding on this. I know what that symbol means. It’s just a joy.”

Familiar villains also turn up in “Krypton,” with Blake Ritson (“Da Vinci’s Demons”) cast as Brainiac. “It’s the best of both worlds,” reasons executive producer and showrunner Cameron Welsh. “People know who Superman is. Most people know just the basics, and that’s really all you need – but our approach is that we’re some 200 years before Superman’s birth, so that’s all untold story. That’s all fertile ground for us to play in. We have a great toy box full of all the best DC characters, and we get to use them in a playground that hasn’t been used before.”

“Innocent,” www.sundancenow.com

From ITV in the U.K. comes this four-part drama series that stars Lee Ingleby (“The A Word”) as a man who begins to rebuild his life after his conviction for the murder of his wife is overturned, only to have dark secrets emerge and many unhappy parties come after him. With episodes dropping weekly after its Thursday premiere, the series also stars Hermione Norris (“MI5”), Nigel Lindsay (“The Tunnel”) and Angel Coulby (“Merlin”).

Life at the top with Dustin Johnson

With just a few weeks to go until the Masters, players on the PGA Tour are starting to buckle down. That includes Dustin Johnson, who as of this writing sits atop the World Golf Rankings, where he’s been for over a year. Johnson will defend his 2017 title at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play tournament, airing Wednesday, March 21 through Saturday on Golf Channel, and on NBC beginning Saturday.

The five-day tournament actually begins with pool play for three days, and then a 16-man bracket tournament culminates the event. Last year Johnson bested John Rahm, who at press time was ranked No. 2 on the World Golf Rankings. Johnson is the first player to win each of the four World Golf Championship events, which are official money events on the PGA Tour, European Tour, and the Japan Golf Tour.

Johnson has had a good run since 2016, when he pretty much won several top honors including Player of the Year, the money winner and the Byron Nelson award – but he would like a better showing in Major tournaments. Since winning the U.S. Open during that fabulous 2016 run, his best finish was ninth that same year at The Open Championship. After finishing fourth in The Masters in 2016, he missed last year’s event after an off-course injury.

Earlier this year he won the Sentry Tournament of Champions in January, becoming only the third player behind Tiger Woods and Jack Nicklaus to notch a title in each of their first 11 seasons.

LAWYER TARA TAKES TO HER NEW LIFE IN SEASON 2 OF ACORN’S ‘STRIKING OUT’

On the subject of empowered women, we offer for your consideration Tara Rafferty.

As played by Amy Huberman on the hit Irish drama “Striking Out,” which recently began streaming its second season on Acorn TV, she’s the successful Dublin-based lawyer who in Season 1 found her life upended when she discovers her fiancé, fellow solicitor Eric Dunbar (Rory Keenan), has been cheating on her. She breaks up with him, quits the law firm where they both worked and sets off on her own to build a new life and legal practice, finding in the process that she might just be better off on her own.

As Season 2 opens, a confident Tara has settled in as her own boss, but finds herself and her staff – assistant Ray Lamont (Emmet Byrne), tech guru/detective Meg Riley (Fiona O’Shaughnessy) and senior counsel Vincent Pike (Neil Morrissey) – faced with morally challenging scenarios that will test them both personally and professionally.

“She kind of becomes quite personally invested with certain clients that she’s representing,” Huberman told a recent gathering of journalists in Pasadena, Calif., “and she keeps getting advice like, ‘Step back. Step back.’ So you kind of have this professional armor, but then you’ve got you ... as the human and how they relate to it, and often you kind of

have to keep private and keep hidden because you can’t display that in a courtroom or to your client.”

“It’s the professional front, and then it’s how the person is dealing with it,” the Irish actress continues. “And also, then, the echoes it has in their own personal life, because so many human stories are universal, and we recognize so much of what other people are going through with what we are going through, and I think you do get to see the different layers of that for the characters, so it becomes a really useful story aid, as well to tell us more about the people that we’re watching.”

Playing someone who has had the figurative rug pulled from under her offered Huberman the opportunity to flex a few acting muscles, portraying Tara at different times as a serious, tragic and even comedic figure. It was a prospect she embraced from the first script.

“To be afforded so much range as an actor was brilliant,” she says. “And I’d actually done quite a bit of comedy before I had done ‘Striking Out,’ so I was really hungry to flex a really dramatic role in the parameters of what ‘Striking Out’ was; that I had all of that journey to go through, and Episode 1 of Series 1 is quite – it opens, and you’re in the drama, and she has a big journey to go through.”
