A young Angeleno pursues sex, love and a possible alien conspiracy
Ulysses is a man adrift.
As played by Avan Jogia (“Tut,” “Twisted”) in the trippy coming-of-age comedy series “Now Apocalypse,” created and executive produced by Greg Araki (“Kaboom,” “Mysterious Skin”) and premiering Sunday, March 10, on Starz, he’s a Millennial gay man searching for himself and fame in Los Angeles – when he’s not hooking up with lovers and indulging his love of marijuana.
Alongside him their pals Carly (Kelli
end relationship with a self-absorbed boyfriend; Ford (Beau Mirchoff, “Awkward”), a pretty boy aspiring screenwriter and Uly’s best friend from college; and Ford’s girlfriend Severine (Roxane Mesquida, “Gossip Girl”), a dedicated NASA scientist and French transplant.
All are in search of goals common to young adults, namely life, love and lots of sex. But what Uly’s friends don’t have in common with him are his disturbing visions of impending apocalypse and alien which he be
“I think that paranoia is such a theme in this show,” says Jogia, “and what I like about this show is that you’re not sure whether this is really happening or not, like whether these alien visions are real.”
While he may be questioning his own sanity, there is no doubt about Uly’s sex drive.

“I kind of explain him as sort of a sexual astronaut,” Jogia says. “He’s exploring the reaches of the world around him and he’s excited about it and it’s something he takes a lot of joy and passion in. And he’s trying to find love, on Grindr, on apps. That’s sort of a hard thing in this day and age. And I think that he’s kind of like the most traditional, funnily enough, of all the characters because he just wants to be loved and to love someone. And the other characters, I think, are going through more of an exploration even in a way than he is.”
Indeed, while Carly combats boredom/earns an extra buck doing sexy webcam performances and Severine questions her relationship with Ford, Uly drifts along from hook-up to hookup, until one night while walking home he stumbles upon what appears to be a man having sex with a lizard-like alien.
Freaked, he confides in Carly what he saw. She’s skeptical.
“She loves him to death but just thinks he’s so high that he’s seeing things,” Berglund says. “Doesn’t believe it, is like, ‘OK, maybe you stop smoking so much weed.’ And I don’t know if there’s a moment where she sees the whole alien thing for herself. ... Like is it a metaphor or is it real? It could be both.”
“She keeps me tethered to like some sort of reality,” Jogia adds. “And I smoke more pot and then less pot and more pot and less pot throughout the show and you see a difference. So it’s sort of interesting to figure out if this is all happening at all. But I think Carly is definitely someone who grounds him and anchors him.”

Being one of the performers on the special “Aretha! A Grammy Celebration for the Queen of Soul,” what are your own memories of Aretha Franklin?
Literally the greatest compliment I probably will ever receive was from her mouth. I’ve always been a fan of hers, since I was a kid – but a lot of times, people you like and love get threatened as ar tists, and they’re incapable of complimenting someone else.
I’m really into reading about ar tists’ lives, honestly because I don’t want to repeat the same mistakes but learn from them. I’ve read a lot on (Franklin), and you could see that she was really suppor tive. She was such a phenomenal talent, she was never threatened by anyone or anything. She just loved what she did and said how she felt, and though I love her as a singer, I love her for her honesty as well.
How do you think Aretha Franklin was when you watched her in actual performance?
I feel like she was ver y real – and also with the suppor t she gave to civil rights and things like that, she was more than a singer It was an
of the greats who did that for me, and this song I’m singing (on the special) is my favorite Aretha song ever.
I thought they’d ask me to sing “Respect” or something like that, but they said. “We’d love you to do ‘I Never Loved a Man (The Way I Love You).”’ Apparently, someone had seen me sing it; I had done it on a whole tour, so I’m pretty stoked to be able to do it, especially (among) ar tists that I love. When I was growing up, I played spor ts and it was like, “You’re only as strong as your weakest link.” And there are no weak links here.

CLEO TV’s ‘New Soul Kitchen’
shows how to make quick, easy, healthy dishes
Those who like their cooking instruction in small bites – pardon the pun – might want to check out a short-form culinary show debuting this week on CLEO TV
In “New Soul Kitchen,” premiering Saturday, March 16, chefs Jernard Wells (“Food Network Star”) and Porsche Thomas (“Hungry”) are the hosts of 10-minute episodes that follow each as they prepare an easy-to-make recipe. All revolve around a common theme but are approached from different angles, as Wells specializes in Southern cuisine and Thomas leans vegan. So for example in an episode with the theme “Between Two Buns,” Wells prepares a smoked gouda cheeseburger while Thomas whips up a vegan sloppy joe. And each is done in a five-minute segment filmed in real time with no breaks or time lapses.
“There’s not a lot of room for error,” Wells acknowledges. “And the thing is, you have to be on point. But cooking in real time is really how we want to show (the food prep) because that’s how if you’re at home cooking in the comfort of your home, you’re cooking in real time. And we want to teach people that cooking is not a bad thing because some people are like, ‘Cooking? Oh, I gotta go in the kitchen and slave over the stove.’ It can actually be fun and you can do it in a fraction of the time.”
Among the dishes on the “Kitchen” menu are Wells’ hot water cornbread, smoked turkey collard greens and a smoked four-cheese mac, while Thomas’ creations tend toward things like a vegan lasagna, a scrambled tofu breakfast burrito and a blueberry cheesecake made with cashews. Despite what appear to be waist-expanding foods – especially Wells’ meals
– both chefs found ways to reduce calories from their dishes through simple measures such as baking a fried chicken to reduce fat content.
“It’s the braising method,” Wells explains. “You fry the chicken just long enough to get the crust the way you want it and you finish it off in the oven to extract the remaining grease out of it. Because what ovens do is they extract, they dehydrate. So if you fry some fish or fry some chicken, you put it in the oven afterwards on an oven rack, at least 40 percent of the grease will drain back out of it.”
Both chefs believe there is a lot of emotion associated with cooking and Wells maintains that Southern cuisine to him is “cooking with love.” Both endeavor to bring that to the show and their dishes.
“For me, I had so much emotional association with food and so I only make the foods I’ve always loved growing up,” Thomas says. “And I just found ways and played with recipes to find ways to make that same dish but like vegan. So it’s definitely that same idea of putting your history into it and just creating that thing that sparked that same thing in you that it always did growing up.”
