Frost on the Pumpkin Festival celebrates 25 years

Annual arts and crafts show continues to grow

Frost on the Pumpkin keeps growing after 25 years.

The annual arts and crafts show will run 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church.

Coordinator Francie Wright said the event began as a craft bazaar 25 years ago.

“And it has grown and grown and grown,” Wright said. “Vendors just spread into another room.”

New vendors add to the variety.

Sadler Arts Academy eighth-grader Klaire Newell will feature culinary and visual art at her booth. She said she hopes to raise money for church ski trips and school trips to art museums and historic sites.

Klaire said when she was in preschool she began taking art classes from Louise Bishop.

“I really just like art a lot,” Klaire said, adding that her family and friends ask for her work.

Klaire’s booth will offer her colorful calendars and hand-painted cards, as well as print reproductions of her paintings.

“I really have a love for flowers,” Klaire said. “And I really love colors. My favorite artist is Van Gogh. He had lots of colorful things.”

Klaire also is baking a variety of

Four performers explore love, marriage and family in Muskogee Little Theatre’s “I Love You, You’re Perfect, Now Change.”

The musical runs this weekend and next at MLT, with performances at 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Nov. 17 and 18. A matinee will be at 2 p.m. Sunday. A performance next Thursday will be at 7:30 p.m. This marks the second time MLT is presenting the play.

Director Nick Sweet said the play is loaded with “sketch comedy.”

“It really is a lot like Saturday Night Live, only it has a dramatic arc,” Sweet said. “It covers the foibles of dating. And the first act ends with marriage. We have the kids. Then we have a road trip with the kids. Then we have old age.”

Sweet said one scene features a couple who think their son and prospective daughter-in-law are going to tie the knot.

“Then, they find out things aren’t going as planned,” he said.

He said the musical comedy is poignant in places.

“It’s a good statement on aging,” Sweet said. “There’s a poignant scene that takes place in a funeral

home. These two old people meet in a funeral home. They both lost their spouse. And they develop a relationship in the funeral home.”

Sweet said the play challenges the actors because they play so many parts.

The four performers agree.

Braden Thomson said he “plays some pretty goofy stuff.”

His parts include a first-time parent, a prison inmate, a lawyer and a clergyman.

“So, I’m all over the board,” he said.

Angelina Cummings said the play “makes fun of the dating world and married life.”

“It does have some reality to it,” she said.

Jessica Holloway said she was attracted by the play’s challenge.

“I really like the script,” Holloway said. “The writing’s really good. It’s versatile. I’m able to play a lot of different parts.”

How many parts do the performers play?

Thompson guessed 13 to 16.

Holloway guessed “20, give or take.”

Seth Arnold said the play has 20 scenes, but some players are not in some scenes.

Cummings said “four people play 40 different characters.”

This means almost the same amount of costume changes, the four said.

Cummings said she probably has 16 different costumes.

Thomson said figuring out costume changes have been his biggest challenge so far.

Holloway said “it’s a very fast-paced moving show.”

“It will make you laugh, and it will make you cry,” she said.

Arnold said he knew the show would have a good cast.

The four said having a small cast is different than the large productions they had been in before.

Holloway said “it’s been very efficient and profes sional.”

“We have a wonderful director,” she said.

Thomson said he could focus more on his part because there aren’t any ensemble numbers.

Thomson said he plays the same parts his father, Steve Thomson, played in the first MLT production.

Braden Thomson said he has an idea of what his father did in the play.

“I’m trying to make it my own and doing it differently, but I have an idea of where to start,” Braden Thomson said. “We haven’t really talked about it a lot.”

The performers say the show has adult themes and adult language.

Sweet said he also was drawn by the opportunity to work in MLT’s new building, which opened last fall. He recalled directing Hank Williams and Buddy Holly retrospectives, as well as “The Miracle Worker,” at

Retired educators Ron and Linda Ledford turn scrap into Christmas decorations and wall hangings.

Linda Ledford uses scraps of oyster shells to make beards for Santa tree ornaments. She shapes faces with polymer clay.

Ledford said they like to vacation around Gulf Shores, Alabama.

“We have found the most beautiful pieces of shell,” she said. “You find pieces. They’re not what other people pick up. The ones that are cast away, we thought we’d try them.”

Ledford makes other ornaments with peach pits and small stones on cut wood. She puts red and green frames on Christmas cards.

Ron Ledford turns planks from old barns and fences to make wall hangings.

Old barn slats come in handy when Ron Ledford makes wall hangings. He will sell his wares at Frost on the Pumpkin.

The Ledfords’ booth also will feature tall wooden snowman and tree decorations.

Wright said to expect more art this year. Members of the Muskogee Art Guild will sell some of their work.

Wright said proceeds from booth rental go for church projects.

“We’ve put new flooring in some of the Sunday school rooms. We’ve bought some new tables,” Wright said.

Methodist youth will have a cafe.

Shoppers also can win door prizes, she said.

“We have a grand door prize given away on Saturday,” Wright said. “Everybody that comes in gets a ticket they can place in the drawing.”

Door prizes also are given away each hour, she said.

Tahlequah’s artistic talent abundant

Arts can enhance quality of life; reflect history, culture

The arts can make life fun, and they can reflect and record history and culture. These reasons and more are why the Cherokee County Arts and Humanities Coalition, otherwise known as Arts Council of Tahlequah, was established four years ago. ACT is a community of artists, collectors and supporters promoting all fine arts and humanities to enhance the quality of life in the Tahlequah area.

What’s next

The next Arts Council of Tahlequah board meeting is 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 16, in Red Moon restaurant.

The community is always welcome.

Center and two-year ACT board member, said volunteering on the Arts Council of Tahlequah board is something she does to have a hand in promoting and uplifting Tahlequah artists.

“We have such a wonderful artist community here.

If you know Tahlequah, you know you can’t throw a stick without hitting an artist, musician, writer, or performer,” said Chunestudy. “Our little city is rich with talent. It’s my favorite thing about Tahlequah, so the real question is, ‘Why wouldn’t I?’”

On Saturday, Nov. 4, ACT for the Arts brought the Byron Berline Band to downtown Tahlequah, performing at Ned’s, along with Doc Fell, RC Trio and Dirty Muggs. As a new fundraiser, this event featured artists such as the Tulsa art group

Inkslingers, and replaced Arts on the Avenue. Three commission paintings – one each by local artists Jerald Peterson, Monica Brown and Kindra Swafford – were silent auction items, along with 4-foot by 4-foot by 4-foot wooden cubes designed by area artists.

During the event, Dr. Terri Baker was recognized as Arts Volunteer of the Year. A retired English professor from Northeastern State University, Baker was a founding ACT board member, served as treasurer for four years, and is an author.

Dr. George Fulk was recognized as Arts Supporter of the Year. A retired NSU professor of Optometry, Fulk took up watercolor painting, began teaching watercolor through Continuing Education at NSU, and founded Watercolor Tahlequah, which meets every Saturday morning at the Cherokee Arts Center.

ACT has had a year of firsts. Plein Air Red Fern brought artists from Oklahoma City, Lawton, Arkansas and Missouri to capture the community on canvas. The Artist-Business Collaborative helps to establish a downtown walking gallery.

The ACT Gallery in the Cort Mall will officially open with a reception on Sunday, Nov. 12, at 1:30 p.m. A Veterans Benefit Art Show, set as a fundraiser for American Legion Post 50’s new roof fund, opens Sunday, Nov 12 and hangs through the end of November. The 2nd Sunday at 2 monthly history series will have its third installment on Nov. 12, featuring veterans history with Nelda Littlejohn and John Reid.

Performing and visual arts events, workshops and programs have been one-time and repeat opportunities to experience the arts locally. The fourth annual Holiday Music Show will be held Sunday, Dec. 3, at 3 p.m., in the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Tahlequah. This free event will feature the Mandophonics, Bob Taylor, Wes

Combs, Bob and Steph Martin, and the 3Fs for an hour of upbeat musical fun.

December also brings the third annual Tri-County Art Show, this year hosted at the new Muskogee Art Guild’s downtown location. The show was originated by ACT, held the first year at the Canebrake in Wagoner County, and last year at Cort Mall. The third annual Tahlequonia Art Show was also held this year during Red Fern Festival.

ACT supports and promotes community arts programs and donates to area schools art classrooms, Tahlequah Writers, and Tahlequah Community Playhouse. Individual and group grants are available for arts organizations, for arts classes and arts opportunities. Meetings are open to the community and ideas for arts projects are always welcome. Next year, ACT plans to focus on youth arts and public art.

Art has changed many lives for the better, from giving teens a way to express themselves, to professional careers, to art, music and dance therapy.

Dr. Carl Farinelli, professor of

educational learning at Northeastern State University, shares a perspective on arts education as his reason for supporting the Arts Council of Tahlequah.

“I am a high school dropout. When I went to Job Corps in the 1960s, I began to learn how I learn. I learned that I learn so much better when I incorporate the arts,” Farinelli said.

When the folks who operated Gary Job Corps Center in San Marcos, Texas, gave him the chance to go to college, he began to use, share, and collect many examples of different types of art: songs, pictures, photos, photos of statues, movement and dance, and other examples. He continues to collect and share these with educators and students to this day.

“I show them the crude drawings I made to learn important lessons that have improved my life: drawings of flowers with Greek and Latin roots of English with the root word at the center and the English derivatives on the petals, Kohlberg’s levels of moral development with a frowning face behind bars repre-

senting punishment, a horse’s head with a wreath representing reward, a simple drawing of George Washington representing social contract, an angel representing universal law, etc.,” Farinelli said.

Now the Farinellis have a grandson who is on the autism spectrum.

“His mother, my daughter Melody, writes social stories for him to use to learn and be comfortable with new situations. My son Matthew and I use Melody’s social stories to write songs for my grandson to hear and sing in order to help him be able to talk and use in social conversation about his experiences. They really seem to help,” Farinelli said.

ACT is funded is through $20 annual memberships, donations and event grants from Cherokee Nation Business and Tour Tahlequah/Convention and Visitor’s Bureau. Visit www.artscounciltahlequah.com to learn about area arts opportunities or contact ACT at P.O. Box 784, Tahlequah, OK 74465.

‘Beyond a Year in Space’ shows

I n the quest to put a man on Mars, the lessons learned from Scott Kelly’s year on the International Space Station are invaluable – among them what happens to the human body after it returns to full gravity.

PBS’ “Beyond a Year in Space,” the follow-up to last year’s Emmy-winning “A Year in Space” that airs Wednesday, Nov. 15 (check local listings), follows the recently-retired American astronaut after his return to Earth on March 1, 2016, thus completing a record-breaking 340-day stay in orbit. It tracks him as he undergoes extensive medical testing and begins to feel the physical toll of an extended period in space. At the same, his twin brother, fellow astronaut Mark Kelly, underwent the

same testing, which gave scientists a unique picture of the differences between what space and Earth environments do to two people of identical genetic makeup.

And while Scott Kelly’s symptoms – which included inflammation, sore muscles, stiff joints, skin sensitivity and flu-like symptoms –were annoying, they weren’t debilitating, though he does admit he had been less than enthusiastic about going back into space for about a year after his return.

“I think what I said soon after I got back ...,” he recalls, “ ‘You know I would definitely fly in space again for a year, but I wouldn’t do it a second time.’ You know, in other words, having not done it before, I would do it again. I think I’m far enough

Mars isn’t as far away as we thought

away from it now that if you asked me the same question, ‘Would you do it again?’ I would say, ‘Absolutely!’ And I would do it a second time. Yeah. Sign me up.

“I think the further we get away from anything in our lives that may be difficult or challenging,” he continues, “you know, you kind of forget about the hard stuff and think more about the stuff that was easy and the stuff that was fun and why you did it.”

The film also introduces two astronauts as they train for a Mars mission –biologist Jessica Meir and former Navy pilot Victor Glover – and follow them at NASA and at home, as they go about their daily lives and talk about what it means to them to be the next generation of astronaut.

Now-retired astronaut Scott Kelly is featured in the new special “Beyond a Year in Space” Wednesday on PBS.

“My class was the first time that it was 50 percent male and 50 percent female,” Meir says, “and so that got a lot of attention and a lot of press, and people were very excited about really highlighting that.

“But, for us, I think we felt quite fortunate that we are in this time where it wasn’t a big deal for us. It just felt normal,” she continues. “And all of us came from different career fields, military pilots, engineers, me as a scientist, and none of us had ever felt differently, that there wasn’t anything that we couldn’t do. Not to take away from all of the struggles that we’ve had in generations before, but I think it’s a really positive sign that for us it was just normal, and I think that that’s just the way society has moved now, so I think that’s really a positive sign.”

The show is called “Will & Grace,” but now as then, it may as well add “& Jack & Karen” to the title.

Any fan knows all four characters are essential to the comedy that has been revived as a Thursday offering by NBC – and that surely includes two-time Emmy winner Megan Mullally’s self-absorbed, literally highpitched Karen Walker, who hasn’t changed much over the 11 years between the series’ two runs. And devotees, and Mullally, wouldn’t have it any other way.

“I think the whole secret of our success is that it’s all fallen into place very seamlessly,” she reasons. “There hasn’t been a struggle, and it just feels right. It feels natural.”

Mullally notes that has special meaning in terms of her work with Sean Hayes, alias the show’s Jack. “Sean and I do have this crazy psychic connection, and between him and me and Jimmy (James Burrows, who has directed every episode of the series), all this stuff comes out. The three of us have so much fun.”

Already renewed for another season, the “Will & Grace” revival was sparked largely by Mullally’s “Why can’t we?” question to creators and executive producers Max Mutchnick and David Kohan after the cast reunited for a hugely popular online video during last year’s election season. As should be suspected now, the reply she got was, “We can.”

While Karen’s literal voice is a trademark of the character, Mullally recalls an episode of the first show when that was in jeopardy: “Suzanne Pleshette was playing my mother – I loved her – and I had a really bad

cold. And I was being asked, ‘What is wrong with the voice? It’s not quite there.’ I could barely talk, much less talk like Karen ... but now, it’s easy to do.”

CNN’s ‘Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent’ profiles a revolutionary chef

Jeremiah Tower is the most important chef you’ve likely never heard of, and that’s something Anthony Bourdain wants to change.

In “Jeremiah Tower: The Last Magnificent,” executive produced by the “Parts Unknown” host, directed by Lydia Tenaglia and premiering Sunday, Nov. 12, on CNN, viewers are introduced to a self-taught chef who established his reputation as a culinary innovator with his 1970s stint as executive chef at the legendary Berkeley, Calif., bistro Chez Panisse, where his experimentation with local ingredients gained him worldwide acclaim.

“We had been a French restaurant and ... most ingredients were not up to French standards for making French food taste the way it should,” Tower explains. “So I just looked around and said, ‘Well, the hell with all of that. I’m beating my head against the wall. I’m just going to use whatever local ingredients there are.’ As I had been doing before, but I was trying to fit them into a French mold. So I thought, ‘I’m just going to cook them as they are, present them as they are.’ And that was the California regional dinner. We took food from everywhere from Sonoma to Big Sur and Monterey Bay and did it. So the menu was all in English and the wines were all from California and so all of that was new.”

After leaving there due to philosophical differences with his partner Alice Waters, he went across the Bay to San Francisco in 1985 to open Stars, where a culinary revolution known as nouvelle cuisine or California cuisine was born. It was here that Tower became a superstar in the culinary world, and Stars, one of the world’s most profitable restaurants, became the place where the rich and famous would fly in to dine.

What book are you currently reading?

“It’s called ‘The Son’ by Philipp Meyer. It’s about Texas and Mexico and it’s sort of the new equivalent of a ‘Thorn Birds’ or ‘Giant’ or something. And it’s about the Comanche, so it’s fascinating to me.”

What did you have for dinner last night?

“It was sort of a late lunch and it was blood sausage tacos with a salad of radishes and cilantro and yerba buena, a mint. And a Chilean sauvignon blanc. And it’s mandarin orange season here, so I had about two of those for dessert.”

What is your next project?

“My next project is a book that is being finished this weekend in New Orleans by my partner who’s an editor and photographer, and so that book will be out in about a month.”

When was your last vacation, where and why?

Jon Lung (left) and Brian Louden

Nearly two years after it left the air, “MythBusters” returns on a new network with new hosts and new experiments – but with the same explosions, crashes and science lessons its fans have come to love.

Premiering Wednesday, Nov. 15, on Science Channel, the new “MythBusters” introduces its hosts: Brian Louden, a Texas native with a degree in biology and a background in everything from building and energy to emergency medicine; and Jon Lung, a New Yorker trained as an engineer and a product designer. Both love science and math and neither missed an episode of the original series when it ran on Discovery Channel from 2003-16.

In Wednesday’s opener, one of the myths Louden and Lung explore is whether a deploying airbag can be lethal to front-seat passengers if their feet are on the dashboard during a front-end collision. For this, the duo employ what is called a “SynDaver,” basically a synthetic human cadaver that has simulated skin, bones, muscle, tissue, veins and internal organs and is used in crash tests to more accurately gauge the damage a real human body could sustain. The most sophisticated models breathe and have pumping blood. The two Louden and Lung used cost about $75,000 each.

“There’s ... Johnny!” www.hulu.com/theres-johnny Paul Reiser, at one time a regular guest on “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson,” is the creative force behind this period comedy that drops Thursday. Set in 1972, it follows the goings-on on that legendary talk show through the adventures of Andy (Ian Nelson, “Teen Wolf”), a young intern. Tony Danza (“Who’s the Boss?”) stars as “Tonight Show” showrunner Freddie de Cordova, alongside Jane Levy (“Suburgatory”) and David Hoffman (“I Live With Models”).

In fact, Lung recalls a “we’re not worthy” moment when original co-host Adam Savage walked into an orientation meeting at the beginning of the search process for the new hosts.

“We’re like star-struck,” he says. “I mean, this guy’s been our idol for literally 14 years and his advice is probably what got me and Brian through the searches, basically, ‘Hey, you guys are about to go through a remarkable journey and regardless of how it ends, you should just be who you are and have fun. Because, one, the audience can tell and, two, it’s probably like a oncein-a-lifetime opportunity.’ And I’ve been taking that advice to heart, I mean, even until now.”

“Future Man,” www. hulu.com/future-man

From the creative minds of Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg comes this comedy series that stars Josh Hutcherson (“The Hunger Games”) as Josh Futturman, a janitor by day/ world-ranked gamer by night who is tasked with preventing the extinction of humanity after mysterious visitors from the future proclaim him the key to defeating an imminent invasion by a super-race. Eliza Coupe, Derek Wilson, Ed Begley Jr. and the late Glenne Headly are also in the cast.

Without giving away spoilers, the results of this experiment are graphic. But having these eerily realistic faux humans sitting around their Southern California workshop proved a little jarring – and creepy – for the hosts.

“Creepy in how scientifically accurate they are,” Lung says. “But yeah, sometimes if you turn a corner and you see one of them laying there, it will spook you.”

“They get left out to be washed before being put away sometimes,” Louden adds, “and you’ll come into the office in the morning and just sitting in a kiddie pool will be that SynDaver with its sort of blank stare looking at you. ... It’s kind of a normal day at work here, though.”

Anyone who saw Milos Forman’s 1999 biopic “Man on the Moon” remember it for Jim Carrey’s complete transformation into late comic Andy Kaufman. In this documentary from director Chris Smith, Carrey looks back at the making of that film through behind-the-scenes footage shot by Kaufman’s girlfriend Lynne Margulies and writing partner Bob Zmuda and recalls how he and Kaufman came up through oddly similar circumstances.

Draymond Green, Warriors’ BIG MAN

The Golden State Warriors are full of standout players, most notably Stephen Curry and Kevin Durant. But having a big man like Draymond Green, who can play multiple positions, is like having a big spoke in a well-oiled wheel. Green and the Warriors visit Kyrie Irving and the Boston Celtics, Thursday, Nov. 16 on TNT.

Green played four years at Michigan State and was drafted 35th overall by the Warriors in 2012. Eventually his playing time as a power forward increased, and his breakout year coincided with the Warriors first championship at the end of the 2014-15 season. Green started in 79 games that year and averaged over 31 minutes of playing time. His stats continued to soar, including a negative one for flagrant fouls. But it was clear that his defensive skills, especially rebounding and being able to guard all five positions, were contributing factors to the powerhouse Warriors team. In fact, Warriors coaches point to Green’s ability as an undersized center to run what is known as their “Death Lineup” against opposing teams.

After losing in the NBA finals in 2016, the Warriors added Durant, and took the title back handily this past season, using the Death Lineup to put the nail in the coffin. The result for Green was not only a second championship ring, but NBA Defensive Player of the Year honors. With all the key components in place for the Warriors, the NBA can expect more of the same from Green and the rest of the crew.

Along with his fellow-astronaut twin brother Mark, he participated in post-mission medical tests to help NASA determine the effects of longduration space travel. Two more astronauts preparing for such an assignment also are profiled during the hour.

A GAMER IS THE WORLD’S LAST BEST HOPE IN HULU’S ‘FUTURE

MAN’

Hulu’s new sci-fi/comedy series “Future Man” has been described as a humorous cross between “The Last Starfighter” and “Terminator,” but executive producer Seth Rogen says it’s actually an amalgam of much more.

“It really is inspired by a lot of the science fiction movies that we grew up (with),” Rogen told a recent gathering of journalists in Beverly Hills, Calif. “Pretty much any science fiction movie from the last, like 35 years roughly, influenced the show. But more than anything, it’s like it’s kind of like a journey (of) a guy (going) from a janitor to potentially the savior of mankind and the story of two future warriors slowly humanizing in our world, which is a weird thing to say out loud.”

Indeed, the half-hour series, which begins streaming its entire 13-episode first season Tuesday, Nov. 14, stars Josh Hutcherson (the “Hunger Games” movies) as Josh Futturman, a young ne’er-do-well toiling at a menial janitor job while still living with his parents, Gabe (Ed Begley Jr., “St. Elsewhere”) and Diane (the late Glenne Headly, “The Night Of”). But if there is one thing this underachiever does well, it’s gaming, and his success at the previously-thought-unbeatable “Biotic Wars” brings him to the attention of two travelers from the

5)

future, Tiger (Eliza Coupe, “Happy Endings”) and Wolf (Derek Wilson, “Preacher”), who tell him the world is in peril and he is the only one with the skill-set capable of preventing the extinction of mankind. He then sets off across time with his newfound partners to stop events and individuals in the past and future that will contribute to the world’s end in the 22nd century. As the characters traversed the decades, Rogen and fellow producers Ben Karlin, Ariel Shaffir and Kyle Hunter were tasked with re-creating the eras, including the 1960s.

“Cinematically it was fun to represent,” Rogen says. “... I was born in 1982, so it was far before my time but you know, ‘Easy Rider’ was like a big, kind of, visual inspiration for us for some of the ’60s stuff. I love movies from the ’60s. Obviously, all that strife creates good filmmaking at times. So it was a good time for independent filmmaking.

“But more than anything, it was a fun area to take the show, both visually and narratively,” he continues, “the music, the style of it, the different themes that are exactly the same themes that are happening now, basically, and have probably been happening forever and will continue to happen until the world ends.”
