WHERE: Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame, 401 S. Third St.

Muskogee Rotary Club will host Mardi Gras Comedy at the Hall of Fame, 8:30 p.m. Friday. Tickets are $10 in advance and $15 at the door at the Oklahoma Music Hall of Fame.

Dylan Lucht, president of Muskogee Rotary Foundation, said the evening will feature three comics: Jozalyn Sharp, Connor McSpadden and Billy Bazar. Lucht said the event also will feature a cash bar.

Bazar, a Tulsa comic, said the event is “definitely a show for adults.”

ADMISSION: $10 in advance, available at eventbrite, Mabry Bank, Firstar and Arvest Bank; $15 at the door.

Sharp’s website said she turned down three scholarships to pursue a career in stand-up comedy. She is known for sharing experiences “traveling and partying her way across the country.”

Bazar said Connor McSpadden often can be seen on Comedy Central.

“You ever hear of the celebrity roast they have on there? He’s a writer,” Bazar said. “All the celebrities that aren’t comedians, he writes the jokes for.”

Bazar said he bases his

“And just getting older,” the 43-year-old said.

Bazar said he tours all

over the country. He just finished a gig in Little Rock.

However, he is no stranger to Muskogee. He performed at the Roxy Theater a year ago.

Lucht said the Mardi

Gras could help Muskogee Rotary fund its myriad local projects, including a golf tournament.

“We just got done sending a check for $10,000 to the Good Shepherd Clinic,” he said. “That was from our annual golf tournament. That was our biggest year. Usually, we were closer to $8,000 or $9,000.”

‘The Boys Next Door’ touches on several themes

Four men deal with love, loss and issues in the Muskogee Little Theatre production of “The Boys Next Door.”

The comedy, written by Tom Griffin, runs Friday through Feb. 17. Performances are 8 p.m. Friday, Saturday and Feb. 16 and 17; 2 p.m. Sunday and 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Director Julie Tattershall, former arts director of Tulsa’s

Clark and Heller Theaters, said the play touches on several themes.

“Like many modern comedies, its really more like a drama/comedy, where there’s real life moments in there,” Tattershall said. “We get to see the real struggles about being different in our society, and how we handle people, and treat people who are different from us.”

She said the play is seen through the eyes of Jack (Jeremy Sheldon), a social worker who oversees group

homes for men with mental or emotional needs.

“He’s in a ‘Catch 22’ situation where it’s impossible to do a good job,” Tattershall said. “He’s got too many cases, too many people and they’re all having crises. He desperately wants to do a good job, but the job is set up so he will fail.”

Tattershall said Jack’s situation could apply other professions, such as teaching.

“He’s trying to keep a lid on the chaos,” she said.

Tattershall said one theme involves handling change.

“Jack changing, but they (the men) stay the same,” Tattershall said. “Lucien stays the same of having the mind of a 5-year-old. Arnold stays with his panic and phobias. Barry stays a schizophrenic. Their ability to change is thwarted by their own limitations.”

Tommy Cummings said his character, Lucien, is a middle-aged man with the mind of a 5-year-old.

Cummings said he studied up on mentally-challenged people and watched many videos to prepare for his part. He said he also picked up on behavior patterns from mentally-challenged people he knew.

Cummings said the play is “really about family, and doing whatever it takes to keep that family.”

“My character relies on a lot of other people, especially the caretaker, Jack,” he said. “Losing him is really hard. It’s really hard, like losing a parent. There is a feeling of abandonment when Lucien realizes he leaves.”

Tattershall said said the script has “amazing truths.”

She noted one scene between the compulsive Norman and Sheila, his date.

“Norman breaks the flowers that she brings, and she says ‘that’s okay, flowers grow back... Flowers break a lot; that’s how come you get them for free,” Tattershall said. “The playwright is say-

ing that people break a lot.”

Carl Critchfield, who plays Norman, is making his first appearance onstage.

“I’ve gone to many Muskogee Little Theatre productions and enjoyed them, and thought maybe one day I would be in one,” Critchfield. “I did not know a thing about the play, and I was the first one (at the audition) the director chose to do a cold reading. She told me to do Norman.”

Critchfield said playing Norman is challenging and fun.

“He wants to be liked,” Critchfield said. “He wants them to all live together, his girlfriend and then their children. He loves doughnuts and he loves his keys. I try to portray that and be a likable type guy, a mentally handicapped likable type guy.”

Rotary has distributed dictionaries to area second-graders for at least 30 years.

“We’re running into people now in their 30s and 40s, and they say, ‘Hey, I’ve got this dictionary a Rotarian gave me when I was in the second grade,” Lucht said. “School books are becoming so scarce anymore for these young kids.”

Rotary also sends high school juniors to a Rotary Youth Leadership Camp, Lucht said.

“We send them from any school that’s in our area,” he said. “It’s really a life-changing program for young students.”

Rotary works with Women in Safe Home, providing a Christmas meal for the women.

The club gave $40,000 to Gospel Rescue Mission for seed money for its new location.

“There are so many different things going on,” he said.

In April, Rotary’s Party in the Park wine, beer and food tasting gala helps raise money for Rotary International’s programs improving water systems in impoverished countries, Lucht said.

Valentine’s Day options plentiful

Ways to treat your loved one

February has arrived, and for many, it’s time to pay tribute to love. Valentine’s Day is next Wednesday, Feb. 14.

Whether the celebration is dinner for two while watching “I Hate Hamlet,” performed by members of the Tahlequah Community Playhouse, flowers and a massage, or checking out the Erotic Art Show held at Ned’s again this year, Tahlequah has a variety of places and ways to enjoy time with a sweetheart.

Local residents can start the Cupid week festivities with a performance and discussion by Dr. Harold Aldridge on Sunday, Feb. 11, at 2 p.m. in the Cort Mall. Sponsored by the Arts Council of Tahlequah, this free history and humanities program will be “Black Music in History.”

Tahlequah Community Playhouse is offering a Sweetheart Table Special for performances of “I Hate Hamlet.” On Feb. 9-11 or 16-17, couples can attend a performance, enjoy catering from Everything Nice by Colene, and added perks.

“In addition to the price

of a ticket, couples can pay $30 and have their own table, their own flower arrangement from A Bloom to take home, gourmet chocolate, champagne, and a commemorative photo taken,” said Bryn Smith, TCP member. Show-only tickets may be available day of the performances, but reservations are required for the dinners and must be made by Wednesday prior to the show. For more information on tickets or to request special seating or dietary needs, call the box office at 918-822-4440.

Lovers can head to downtown Tahlequah the night before Valentine’s Day for Wines of Winter on Tuesday, Feb. 13. This Main Street event keeps select businesses open until 8 p.m. or later for shoppers to take advantage of special deals and wine samples. A ticket is $25 and includes an entry for the wine pull, wine tasting, access to deals on the Downtown Tahlequah app, and the first 100 ticket buyers get a 2018 Wines of Winter glass. A shopping-only ticket will be available for $5 on the day

of the event.

“Come celebrate Valentine’s Day with your favorite people in downtown Tahlequah, where you’ll enjoy strolling through downtown, wine and shopping and end the night with dinner at The Branch, Sam and Ella’s, The Grill, The Drip, Azar’s or Boomerang,” said Shay Stanfill, TMSA president.

“Wines of Winter is a private event with admittance tickets required.”

Visit www.tahlequahmainstreet.com for ticket locations and event details.

Valentine’s gifts tend to be sweet or intimate, and some businesses are offering a mix.

“Double the fun and we’ll throw in a box of gourmet chocolates,” said A Bloom owner Josh Cottrell-Mannon. “Valentine’s is on Ash Wednesday this year so, of course, if you’re Catholic and aren’t eating out, flowers are a better choice.”

A Bloom and Skin Boutique are offering a half-dozen roses and 30-minute massage gift certificate for $75, or a dozen roses, a one-hour massage gift certificate and a box of gourmet chocolates for $150.

Skin Boutique Spa Manager Sammye Rusco said she’s excited about partnership with A Bloom for the two specials for Valentine’s Day.

“We’re also offering an event to treat yourself and love yourself on Tuesday from 6:30-8:30 p.m. It’s kind of a class with Holly Kirk and esthetician Angie Woodson to educate people and help make themselves a facial mask, hair oil, a

body scrub, and for a bonus, they’ll get a sugar lip scrub. We’ll have wine and hors d’oeuvres, all for $30,” said Rusco. “Customers can learn about the properties of the ingredients and it’s customized for people’s skin types.”

To order the flowers and massage, call A Bloom.

“Having flowers delivered with a gift card attached, now that’s something special,” said Kirk.

Couples looking for a nice meal have a few restaurant options, including The Branch.

“We’ll have a set up for two that comes with a choice of filet and lobster tail or Atlantic salmon and sauteed shrimp, with two sides, appetizer, salad, and gelato for desert, for $80, and bottled wine available,” said Kelley. “We have jazz music on Thursday nights and live music on Fridays and Saturdays from 8-10 p.m.”

For some, a little exercise and friendly competition gets their hearts pumping. Thunder Bowl has a Valentine’s special all day.

“Bring your sweetheart for a free game of bowling and shoes,” said owner Randy Gregory. “It’s $3.80 per game and shoes are $2.25, so with tax, $6.62.”

The 21-and-over crowd can cap off Valentine’s Day at Ned’s for the annual Erotic Art Show, held 7-11 p.m. This is a favorite show of artists who enjoy getting together with peers for art that is far more that nudes, although those may be included, but it can range from nature, landscapes, jewelry and more.

“I believe that the Tahlequah Valentine’s Erotic Art Show is the longest running erotic art show in Oklahoma,” said sponsor Tom Baker.

U.S. freeskier Goepper stays grounded while flying through the air

Nick Goepper is a young man seeking balance.

As a member of the U.S. freeskiing team vying this week at the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea (which airs on NBC, NBC Sports Network, CNBC, USA Network, NBCOlympics. com and the NBC Sports app), the 23-year-old native of Lawrenceburg, Ind., is ever cognizant of the need to stay in top condition and competitionready, but also knows that there is such a thing as overdoing it. As he has done before.

“I skied every single month of the year last year,” he says, “and I got to a point where I think I was beating myself up. I was tired, my body was worn out, I was worn out mentally. But I think you have to make a mature decision to purposely take time off. Even though you might feel great and really want

to go skiing, but having the time off, it kind of gives you a mental edge, because you’re just fired up to go back skiing when you do. And it also gives your body a nice rest.”

This week, however, he’ll be coming off arguably the second-biggest event of his season – the Jan. 25-28 Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo. –when he competes in slopestyle in South Korea. Having won the bronze medal in that event four years ago in Sochi, Russia, he feels confident in his ability to move up on the podium and take gold.

But he knows there will be literal and figurative mountains to climb. He’ll be competing against the best of the best, vying with an accomplished field that includes U.S. teammate Gus Kenworthy (the silver medalist in Sochi in 2014), Norway’s Oystein Braaten (the X Games gold medalist in

2017), Sweden’s Henrik Harlaut (silver medal at the 2013 X Games) and newcomer Andri Ragettli of Switzerland.

“I like to set expectations for myself but not unrealistic ones,” Goepper says, “and I think that’s something that I’ve learned over the years, is to be realistic with expectations that you place on yourself. I think it is important to do, because that’s how you push yourself and strive to compete and reach your goals. But I think it’s important to not shoot too high because then you risk feeling like a failure all the time, personally. So I think it’s important to set expectations, but realistic ones.”

The well-spoken, wellgrounded Goepper is also careful to not get caught up in the celebrity that comes with being an Olympic athlete. After winning bronze four years ago, he took to Twitter to court

Like so many men of a certain age, Phil Rosenthal is using his 50s as a time to scale back a little, enjoy the fruits of his considerable labor and see the world.

Indeed, the writer/producer best known as the creator of the wildly popular 1996-2005 sitcom “Everybody Loves Raymond” is having fun in his role as host of the culinary travel series “Somebody Feed Phil,” now in its second season on Netflix. And he wants to share his love of travel with others.

“I want to get you to travel,” the 58-year-old native of New City, N.Y., explains, “and I’m using food and hopefully humor as the way in. But the purpose of the show is to get you to travel, because I think there’s no more mind-expanding thing we can do in life than travel. It’s the best thing you can do with your hard-earned money, it’s the best thing you can do for yourself in your life. It will change your life for the better every time, and I actually think that the world would be a little better if we could all experience a little of someone else’s experience.”

In the 12-episode second season (six of which are currently streaming with six more coming in spring), Rosenthal visits such locations as Tel Aviv, Lisbon, Saigon, Mexico City, New Orleans and Bangkok to tour iconic landmarks and the countryside, meet the locals and try the popular regional eats. At the moment, “Somebody Feed Phil” is Rosenthal’s only project, though he

country artist Taylor Swift on Valentine’s Day and was even photographed with her at the Golden Globe Awards that year, but nothing came of it. This year, his focus is trained firmly on skiing, as that is his first love and it’s what has gotten him to this point in his life.

“It’s something that I’ve loved since I was 10 years old and it has brought a lot of cool, positive things to my life,” he says. “I love to challenge myself and work hard, and skiing is something that I really enjoy doing that in. And it also is very rewarding, too, when you do push yourself and work hard, and skiing gives me an outlet to do that. And also I’ve got so many great friends that do this, and just to experience doing flips on massive jumps and traveling the world and sharing it with not too many people is just a cool experience.”

admits he has ideas for a podcast, a book and sitcom. So he hopes a Season 3 will become a reality at some point.

“I consider myself a self-appointed goodwill ambassador,” he says. “I feel like if I’m going to these places, I feel like all of us have a responsibility to put our best foot forward and make friends in the world.”

A Toronto mother and daughter want to teach you to ‘Cook Like a Jamaican’

Angela Lawrence was just minding her own business, videotaping her mother’s Jamaican recipes and posting them to YouTube for a family project when serendipity struck.

Turns out, there are a lot of people on the Internet who want to cook like a Jamaican, and so “Cook Like a Jamaican,” starring Lawrence and her mother Fay DeLeon, was born.

The year was 2007, when the Toronto native wanted to learn her Jamaican-born mom’s recipes but didn’t want to be bothered with writing them down, so she picked up a camera and taught herself how to shoot video. A few years later, she decided to edit the videos and post them online for a family legacy project and a YouTube channel for family to watch, when outside users took notice. Viewership and subscriptions went through the roof and two YouTube stars were born.

“There was a recipe that like took off – and it’s still definitely in the top three popular recipes,” Lawrence explains, “which is a video for brown stew chicken. And it was that video and the video for fried dumplings, which are both very traditional standards. ... And so what we found was those two

Eleven years later, “Cook Like a Jamaican,” with its 115 videos (and counting), is approaching 100,000 subscribers with views well into the millions. On the channel, Fay shows viewers how to make such varied and traditional Jamaican staples as pepper shrimp, Caribbean pineapple chicken, baked plantains, curry tripe and beans, curry beef, macaroni pie (the Jamaican version of macaroni and cheese), fried banana chips and Lawrence’s favorite, ackee (a fruit similar to apple) and saltfish.

“It’s Jamaica’s national dish,” she says, “but it’s like one of my favorite things to eat. It’s really quite easy to make if you have all the right ingredients. But yeah, I would say that’s comfort food for me – Jamaican comfort food.”

“Our Cartoon President” premieres Sunday Showtime.on

Net Picks

“Everything Sucks!” www.netflix.com/title/80117551

Set in the town of Boring, Ore., in 1996, this series is a coming-of-age story that follows the adventures of two crews of nerdy teen outcasts who join forces to make a movie and endure the purgatory of high school. The 10-episode dramedy series comes from the minds of Ben York Jones (“Newness”) and Michael Mohan (“Save the Date”), stars Peyton Kennedy (“American Fable”) and Jahi Winston (“The New Edition Story”) and drops Friday.

Whatever view one takes of him, Donald Trump is now “Our Cartoon President” as far as Showtime is concerned.

Stephen Colbert surely has raked America’s current chief executive over the coals on his weeknight CBS talk show, and he does so in a different way as an executive producer of the animated series that Showtime debuts Sunday, Feb. 11. The show makes the president, his political associates and his family the objects of humor devised by a team that also includes Chris Licht, Colbert’s “Late Show” executive producer. “The show is (about) the interpersonal relationships of the people that you don’t get to see,” Colbert explains, “all people you know, but the relationships you imagine they

have ... animated, which I think at this point is the only way to truly, accurately capture what it must be like to be inside the White House. The great thing about the Trump administration is whatever you imagine, you’re right. Everything else is a lie. So, we treat this like it’s a documentary crew that’s able to go into the White House, and they’ve been honored to have the cartoon president say, ‘You can come in and film it.’ ”

Of course, the odds would be against that possibility with an actual camera crew. Still, because of how it’s done, “Our Cartoon President” can address relevant issues that arise at the last minute.

“Right now, we’re taking about two or three weeks

“In the Cloud,” www. crackle.com/in-thecloud

This Crackle original scifi movie takes place in the near future after dozens are killed by a serial bomber, prompting a pair of tech whizzes to create a cuttingedge virtual reality technology that allows investigators to invade the terrorist’s memory and pinpoint the remaining explosive devices. Nora Arnezeder (“Mozart in the Jungle”), Gabriel Byrne (“The Usual Suspects”) and Justin Chatwin (“Shameless”) star.

to write each episode,” says executive producer R.J. Fried, who’s also doing double duty on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” and the new program. “Meanwhile, the animation department is developing the characters, developing the sets. I think overall, it takes about two to three months to animate an episode.”

Because it involves cartoon voice-overs, though, of-themoment subjects can be addressed by a quick dubbing of new dialogue. “You can change the acting last minute, luckily,” Fried notes, “due to this technology that (‘Our Cartoon President’ co-creator and ‘Late Show’ animation director) Tim Luecke and his team have really perfected. The

show is constantly updating, based on if something crazy happens.”

For any amusement there may be in seeing cartoon likenesses of President Trump and his cabinet in action, the makers of “Our Cartoon President” stress their serious purpose in deploying the technique.

“I don’t think we’re complimenting him by making a cartoon out of him,” Colbert states, “and I don’t think there’s anything normal about his behavior as a cartoon. And I think that the subjects we’re picking are dark enough that they reflect the stakes of truly cartoonish behavior in the actual 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”

Erin Hamlin: Team USA’s hope for Olympic luge gold

It took 50 years for an American to medal in a singles luge event before Erin Hamlin won a bronze medal at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. She’ll get another shot at a medal as part of the U.S. Olympic Women’s Luge team this week at the XXIII Olympic Winter Games in PyeongChang, South Korea. The women’s luge competition is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, February 12 and 13, and will be carried by NBC Networks. These include NBC and its local affiliates, NBCSN, CNBC and USA Network, as well as the Olympic Channel and live streaming from nbcolympics.com

Hamlin is from the Adirondack region in upstate New York, and cut her teeth at the Olympic Sports Complex at Mt. Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid, which hosted the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympics. After taking up luge, she quickly ascended the ranks, both at the U.S. and international levels, and by 2006 was a member of Team USA at the Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy. She also competed at the Vancouver Winter Olympics in 2010, a year after winning a gold medal in women’s singles in record-setting fashion at the World Champions that were held on her home track in Lake Placid. Then, she won the bronze at Sochi in 2014 and became a local and national hero.

Having just won a gold medal in the sprint, and silver medals in singles and team relay at the World Championships, Hamlin appears poised for some solid runs on the luge track in PyeongChang.

The Four: Battle for Stardom

This competition has had a fairly compact run, marked by the fact that after a little over a month, it airs its two-hour season finale here. The last four contestants who have vied to stay in the game — literally — face the music, also literally, to be declared the winner. Sean Combs, DJ Khaled, Meghan Trainor and Charlie Walk are the mentors and judges, with Fergie serving as host.

FRIDAY

8 p.m. on KTUL Child Support

It hasn’t been a long maiden run for this game show, since after debuting in January, it already presents its season finale here. Ever-sly comedian and actor Ricky Gervais chats with five youngsters and gets them to answer questions — which then are posed to adult contestants, who can rely on the kids to “save” them if they’re stumped. Fred Savage, in a break from his customary acting and directing, is the host.

SATURDAY

2 p.m. on KJRH

2018 Winter Olympics

It’s the first full day of Winter Olympics action from PyeongChang, South Korea with plenty to see. In Women’s hockey, Japan and Sweden square off as do Switzerland and South Korea. Curling’s round robin tournament continues and early medals will be awarded today in Biathlon with the running of the women’s 7.5km sprint. Short track, alpine skiing and speed skating will also hold medal events, while snowboarding kicks off with the men’s slopestyle.

SUNDAY

7 p.m. on SHOW

Our Cartoon President

Stephen Colbert hasn’t been shy about hurling satiric barbs at President Donald Trump during his opening monologues on his weeknight CBS talk show, and he’s certainly not likely to go any easier on his quarry as executive producer of this new animated comedy series, which premieres tonight in two back-to-back episodes. The show imagines what life must be like inside the daily routine of the Trump White House, imagining the relationships and conversations of personalities who are familiar from daily news reports.

MONDAY

8 p.m. on TNT

The Alienist Kreizler and Sara (Daniel Bruhl, Dakota Fanning) share an exchange of ideas about what gives a human being the capacity to kill in the new episode “These Bloody Thoughts.” Byrnes and Captain Connor (Ted Levine, David Wilmot) keep an eye on a potential suspect, while John Moore (Luke Evans) goes on a date. Meanwhile, Roosevelt

(Brian Geraghty) is caught under the glare of public scrutiny.

TUESDAY

9 p.m. on WGN Bellevue

While searching a drug house, the police find a likely suspect, but Annie (Anna Paquin) is convinced this dealer doesn’t fit the profile of Jesse’s presumed kidnapper. The evidence is hard to dispute, however, so Annie focuses instead on figuring out who her Riddler might be. Eddie (Allen Leech) drifts away from Annie as he becomes drawn to Briana (Amber Goldfarb), Brady’s (Billy MacLellan) sister, in the new episode “Hello, Little Light.”

WEDNESDAY

7:31 p.m. on FREE Alone Together

Hoping to persuade the two women to become her mentors, Esther (Esther Povitsky) invites a lesbian couple from her building to a dinner party, but Benji (Benji Aflalo) takes a protective move by stepping in to ensure Esther doesn’t embarrass herself by going overboard. His efforts only serve to make the two guests take a greater interest in Benji, sending Esther’s jealousy into overdrive in the new episode “Dinner Party.” Amy Landecker (“Transparent”) guest stars.

HEARING-IMPAIRED PLATONIC FRIENDS GET ‘THIS CLOSE’ ON SUNDANCE NOW

Just in time for Valentine’s Day comes a new dramedy series about a male-female relationship where romance isn’t part of the equation.

In “This Close,” which begins streaming Wednesday, Feb. 14, on Sundance Now, we are introduced to Kate (Shoshannah Stern, “Weeds”), a 30-ish public relations executive who just got engaged to boyfriend Danny (Zach Gilford, “The Purge: Anarchy”). Her life is on an upward trajectory, but that of her longtime friend Michael (Josh Feldman, “The Chances”), a graphic novelist, most definitely is not. He’s just been dumped by his boyfriend and is drowning his miseries in an ocean of drink.

To make matters worse, Kate takes pity on Michael and at first doesn’t tell him about her big news, which only serves to make him feel and react even worse when he does find out.

“The timing totally sucks,” Feldman explains through a deaf interpreter, “because how can Michael be happy for Kate when he’s going through the worst time of his own life? Like he feels like s... . He feels very upset every day but this is a big moment in his best friend’s life and so he feels bad. That’s why Michael doesn’t react very well.”

“In defense of Michael,” Stern adds with a laugh, “I think that it’s less about Kate’s engagement and the fact that Kate didn’t tell him. So the show at its heart, we like to think it’s about communication but the secrets are the opposite of clear communication. So when Michael finds out that Kate kept her engagement secret from him, it’s really tough for him.”

The story is based on the real-life friendship of the two principals, series co-creators and writers Stern and Feldman, two deaf actors and Gallaudet University pals who decided to do a series about deaf characters experiencing life, love and dayto-day trials in a world set up for the hearing.

“I think they are each other’s person,” says Stern of Kate and Michael. “There’s one person in your life that makes you be your best self and I think that each of them are that for each other. I think Kate brings Michael out of his shell and Michael helps Kate be more grounded.”

“Kate and Michael are almost mirror images of each other but in reverse, if you will,” Feldman adds. “Like Michael’s more dark, Kate’s more light. They need the other to balance (themselves) out.”
