Longtime pals Nantz and Romo look for ward to their first Super Bowl as a tandem
It seems hard to believe that in his 14 seasons as a Dallas Cowboy, Tony Romo has never been to a Super Bowl.
As a matter of fact, he owns the highest rating, 97.1, of any quarterback never to have played in the NFL’s title game.
But that drought ends for him in one manner on Sunday, Feb. 3, when he teams with CBS boothmate Jim Nantz to call the action on Super Bowl LIII from Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. And it’s a moment he’s looking for ward to as if he’s still playing.
“I think there’s always a little bit of ner ves before every game, whether you’re a player or an announcer,” the 38-year-old San Diego native reasons. “I think that’s good, I think it’s healthy. In some ways, it makes you feel important. But I don’t know what exactly I’m going to feel before the game. ”
As one would expect, the plan for CBS on Sunday is an all-day affair, totaling nearly 11 hours of coverage, starting before noon (ET) with “ That Other Pregame Show,” airing from Game Day Fan Plaza in the Georgia capital, before going into the NFL Films’ documentar y “Road to the Super Bowl,” which captures the sights and sounds of the 2018 season. Then comes “Tony Goes to the Super Bowl,” which follows Romo as he covers his first championship game, and “ The Super Bowl Today,” with analysis, features and inter views with key players and coaches.
The action then switches to the field for “Super Bowl on CBS Kick-Off Show,” featuring the singing of the National Anthem and player introductions. That’s followed by the game itself, a clash between the champions of the AFC and NFC.
For Nantz, Sunday’s contest marks his seventh Super Bowl, his fifth doing play-by-play plus two as studio host. He enjoys an easy chemistr y with Romo thanks to a friendship that dates back to Romo’s playing days, their multiple dinners and Romo’s guest appearances on Nantz’s golf and college basketball telecasts. So when Romo retired from the Cowboys two years ago, Nantz knew his friend would have the makings of a great analyst. For him, working with Romo has been a seemless transition.
“Oftentimes in television where two individuals get together, they say, ‘Go create some chemistr y.’ That was not something we had to do,” Nantz says. “... We had a friendship, we had a chemistr y, we had a bond going into this thing that certainly was helpful. We didn’t have to tr y to get to know each other and have any awkward early steps of tr ying to have a way of communicating with one another.”
“I got to spend the early part of my career being the young guy in the dynamic of an on-air booth relationship,” he continues, “and I was blessed to have guys like Billy Packer a generation above me, Ken Venturi in golf – legends in their sports – and I was the junior guy This is the first time in my career where it’s flipped and now I’m a generation older than Tony. And I think back to how good those (partners) of mine in the past were to me and I tr y to be everything and more in that regard to Tony

One of the “Roswell, New Mexico” episodes was directed by Shiri Appleby, who had the role of Liz in the original “Roswell” series. How was that experience for you, now that you’re playing Liz?
We were both surprised by how special it felt, and sor t of fated. She wore her T-shir t that she wore in the original pilot of “Roswell” for her first day of filming, and it was just such a full-circle moment. I felt so lucky to be a par t
of it and to be an instrument for her, and I just wanted to make her proud.
She really encouraged me to take ownership of this new level in my career, and to not let any oppor tunity pass me by, and to asser t myself and my wor th. We’ve maintained contact, and she’s just a wonder ful mentor now I could never have imagined that this job would give me that gift.
With a background in dancing, including your run on “So You Think You Can Dance” – which you won in Season 5 – how do you view your crossover into acting?
I didn’t have posters on my wall, but if I did, they would have been of Sutton Foster who’s been on “Younger,” but is a Broadway legend. Or of Rita Moreno, because watching her as Anita in “West Side Stor y” made me think, “I want to do that!” It’s always been my aspiration to be such a well-rounded per former, and it’s their steps that I hope to follow
Last year, I got to do a play with the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles at the Mark Taper Forum, a show called “Zoot Suit.” It was at a time when you’re auditioning for things but there isn’t anything pressing, and that play came up, and I was just so excited to do it. That’s the kind of stuf f I would love to fill my career with, things that just let me stretch myself.

Each episode of this new eightpart event series spotlights a different couple working with celebrated event planner David Tutera to ensure they wind up with the wedding of their dreams. The series premiere, “Krista and Redmond,” introduces a couple who have devoted their lives to serving others. Krista, a firefighter, works at one of the country’s busiest stations in Los Angeles. Redmond became a motivational speaker after losing a leg to an explosive device while serving as a Navy Corpsman Combat Medic in Afghanistan.
