THIS WEEK

Week of February 26 - March 4, 2017

Jimmy Kimmel hosts the 89th edition of the Oscars, Sunday on ABC.

Jimmy Kimmel plays first-time host of potentially political Oscars

How political will this year’s Oscars get?

To look at the thresholds set by such recent events as the Golden Globe Awards (and very particularly, Meryl Streep’s acceptance speech for her Life Achievement Award) and the Screen Actors Guild Awards, chances are good that the movie industry’s top ceremony will invoke the general climate in America these days. And more than once.

And since Jimmy Kimmel isn’t shy about diving right into the subject, he’ll be in good company.

ABC’s late-night talk host will preside over the event for the first time, and he’s a logical choice, since his network has – as it typically does – the Academy Awards, with the 89th edition airing Sunday, Feb. 26, from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre. Also, he’ll be playing to a crowd that he largely knows and that knows him, since many nominees and other celebrities have passed through “Jimmy Kimmel Live” (several times in many cases) over its 14-years-and-counting history.

That should give Kimmel an immediate dose of goodwill for his Oscars opening monologue, which generally sets the tone for the evening. Because he knows the people he’ll be joking about, and vice versa, Kimmel will be able to get away with a lot ... an opportunity he’ll likely take, which would be no surprise to viewers of his Monday-through-Friday showcase.

Still, he could find himself in competition with what others have to say when they take the stage. Recent events have made live award shows hugely unpredictable occasions, and it’s possible the element of not knowing what to expect –even more than usual – could result in bigger ratings. With the Oscars typically one of any year’s top-rated telecasts anyway, such an upward bump in the numbers could be significant.

As for the specific honors themselves, the favorite contender would appear to be the Hollywood-musical-saluting “La La Land,” which ties a record previously set by “All About Eve” and “Titanic” with 14 bids. Also going in with many

Oscar nominations are “Arrival” and “Moonlight” with eight each, and “Hacksaw Ridge,” “Lion” and “Manchester by the Sea” with six apiece. Up for best picture along with all of them are “Fences,” “Hell or High Water” and “Hidden Figures.”

While the winners of the Governors Awards (or “honorary Oscars”) always are of note, the range of craft they cover this time is especially notable. Martial-arts icon

Jackie Chan, film editor Anne V. Coates (who won an Oscar for “Lawrence of Arabia” more than 50 years ago), veteran casting director Lynn Stalmaster and documentarian Frederick Wiseman (“Titicut Follies”) were celebrated during a separate event in November, but their honors also will be noted during the main show.

Here are the nominees in other major categories for the 89th Annual Academy Awards.

Best actor: Casey Affleck, “Manchester by the Sea”; Andrew Garfield, “Hacksaw Ridge”; Ryan Gosling, “La La Land”; Viggo Mortensen, “Captain Fantastic”; Denzel Washington, “Fences.”

Best actress: Isabelle Huppert, “Elle”; Ruth Negga, “Loving”; Natalie Portman, “Jackie”; Emma Stone, “La La Land”; Meryl Streep, “Florence Foster Jenkins.”

Best supporting actor: Mahershala Ali, “Moonlight”; Jeff Bridges, “Hell or High Water”; Lucas Hedges, “Manchester by the Sea”; Dev Patel, “Lion”; Michael Shannon, “Nocturnal Animals.”

Best supporting actress: Viola Davis, “Fences”; Naomie Harris, “Moonlight”; Nicole Kidman, “Lion”; Octavia Spencer, “Hidden Figures”; Michelle Williams, “Manchester by the Sea.”

Best director: Damien Chazelle, “La La Land”; Mel Gibson, “Hacksaw Ridge”; Barry Jenkins, “Moonlight”; Kenneth Lonergan, “Manchester by the Sea”; Denis Villeneuve, “Arrival.”

Best animated feature: “Kubo and the Two Strings”; “Moana”; “My Life as a Zucchini”; “The Red Turtle”; “Zootopia.”

Best documentary feature: “Fire at Sea”; “I Am Not Your Negro”; “Life, Animated”; “13th”; “O.J.: Made in America.”

DAVID HOFLIN ON PLAYING FITZGERALD IN ‘Z’: ‘A FINE LINE BETWEEN ARROGANCE & CONFIDENCE’

Amazon’s newest period piece, tenepisode “Z: The Beginning of Everything,” is definitely the Zelda Fitzgerald show – but Zelda Fitzgerald was shaped in so many ways – for better or worse – by the relationship with her famous, famously difficult husband, F. Scott Fitzgerald. Australian actor David Hoflin stepped into the American literary giant’s Jazz Age tux for “Z,” and spoke with us about his experience on the show.

ANYTHING SURPRISING YOU LEARNED IN THE PROCESS OF PREPARING FOR AND FILMING “Z”?

I mean, obviously doing research for a character like F. Scott, I think it can be a very good friend – but it can also be an enemy of sorts. You can do research until you go crazy, on someone like him. And we’re sort of erring on

the side of Zelda’s view of their life, not necessarily F. Scott’s, so there is going to be an obvious bias towards the account of their history to Zelda’s side. You have to take that into account when filming – that we are telling her story. So that’s something that I had to be aware of, that it was not all about me.

ONE OF THE MOST INTERESTING THINGS I FOUND ABOUT THIS SEASON OF “Z” WAS HOW, EVEN THOUGH THEIR ROMANCE WAS FAIRLY CENTRAL, YOUR ARC WAS ALMOST A REVERSE OF THE TRADITIONAL ROMANTIC HERO’S ARC.

I keep on using the words “tumultuous romance,” because they didn’t really have a successful relationship – but they did start out with a huge amount of passion. Certainly he used Zelda as

his muse, his inspiration for a lot of his writing. And people are going to argue forever about how much of her material he used – some will say he didn’t; some will say, well, he did a little; some will say a lot – but certainly without Zelda in his life, his writing would have suffered.

I think on a romantic level there was a deep love between them, but there was also a destructive need. At least, that’s what we’re playing with. F. Scott needed Zelda on many levels that came more out of desperation rather than want, and I think that’s where we’re kind of heading with it. Their lives moving forward – it was not a typical romance, where they lived happily ever after. But at the same time, they never divorced, and we’ve only sort of scratched the surface of what their relationship is in this first season.

Winter’s

almost over – time to party

As winter moves into its final few weeks, some may take that as cause to party. If that’s you, several shows on basic cable this week will show you how to do it up right.

One is “Dinner at Tiffani’s” Sunday, Feb. 26, on Cooking Channel, as host Tiffani Thiessen throws a Mardi Gras bash that comes complete with gumbo, a hot crab and kale dip with Creole crostini and cheesy grits washed down with a Sazerac cocktail, a traditional New Orleans beverage not unlike cognac. On the guest list is Thiessen’s former “Fastlane” costar Bill Bellamy and actor Eric Close.

Immediately following on Cooking is the season finale of “Tia Mowry at Home,” which finds the host in the mood to celebrate her family’s new house with a menu of arugula farro salad with garlic vinaigrette, roast chicken and vegetables, zesty lemon green beans and a dirty chai cocktail. Yum!

Earlier that day on Food Network, Giada De Laurentiis marks her recent trip to Italy with her “Tuscan Barbecue Party,” featuring grilled chicken involtini, buttery herbed potatoes, mushroom and grape crostini and spiked Arnold Palmers. Too bad we can’t drop by.

Later in the week on Food, the Saturday, March 4, edition of “Valerie’s Home Cooking” sees host Valerie Bertinelli cooking for a wine club party in which one of the guests is lactose intolerant. She prepares a menu of steak towers, polenta crackers with roasted wild mushrooms, grilled shrimp skewers with green onions and romesco sauce and white pepper cherry cookies. Who knew nondairy could be so enticing?

Over on Travel Channel on Monday, Feb. 27, “Booze Traveler” brings host Jack Maxwell to Cuba to check out the Havana haunts of Ernest Hemingway, get cleansed in the island nation’s oldest religion and sip on iced mojitos and rum with sugar cane.

Five days later and about 300 miles to the north, we can find Emeril Lagasse of Cooking’s “Emeril’s Florida” in Miami Beach, where he hits the worldrenowned hotspot StripSteak and drops in on two new eateries that offer unique dining experiences. And in the kitchen, he cooks up petite tournedos with beurre rouge with crabmeat and braised baby kale.

If your tastes run to the more exotic, try Cooking’s “Ching’s Amazing Asia” on Tuesday, Feb. 28, which brings host and Taiwanese chef Ching He-Huang to cities such as Taipei and Macau to try everything from black pepper duck to Taiwanese comfort foods. And if good home cooking is what you seek, the chefs on Food’s “The Kitchen” have tips for weeknight meals ranging from a pierogi reuben skillet dish and lasagna soup to honey chipotle bean burritos and spicy chicken stir fry. Home chefs, take notice.

‘The

Deed’ bails out house flippers in financial trouble

Many shows about house flipping make the process look relatively painless, despite the potential setbacks in renovating or building a home.

And then, there’s “The Deed.” CNBC’s entry in the category premieres Wednesday, March 1, and it’s determined not to shy away from the rough spots. The program finds property investors on the edge of losing it all – including their wits – upon hitting the wall, figuratively and literally, with their projects’ seemingly insurmountable hurdles. Enter Sidney Torres and Sean Conlon, multimillionaires and real-estate moguls who are willing to save the day with their finances and expertise, seeking a piece of the given property and a percentage of the profits in return.

Venture capitalist Torres is based in New Orleans, as are his episodes of “The Deed” (which will be shown first, running through March 22), and he describes his encounter with a city planner who caught the flipping “bug” postHurricane Katrina. After some early successes, she asked her elderly parents to sign a million-dollar loan that would let her convert an old village into historic homes – but she made no sales, then asked her parents to co-sign an additional $1.5 million loan.

“When I finally met with her at her office,” Torres recalls, “she broke down in tears ... and rightfully so, because she put her

Sidney Torres and Sean

parents and her husband and everyone that was involved in a lot of debt. And she was six months, seven months (into) not selling anything. There was no activity. The bank was calling the loan. I know how that feels. I’ve been in that position. And when we were shooting the show, (the crew) said, ‘She’s never going to break down.’ Not that we’re looking for somebody to break down, but we felt like she was very much like a robot.

“But she ended up breaking down, because she had nowhere else to go,” adds Torres, who reportedly has mulled a run for mayor of New Orleans (and who inspired the current Fox series “APB”). “And that moment, when she opened up and started to break down, I almost broke down because I could feel her pain. And I think that’s what this show really shows: that it’s real issues that you deal with when you’re developing real estate. It’s not as easy as everybody thinks it is.”

Henry Louis Gates Jr.

What was your purpose in making “Africa’s Great Civilizations”?

What we wanted to do was tell a sophisticated but accessible and compelling history of the African continent, starting 200,000 years ago. I did a series on Africa in 1998, and there are so many more developments, so much new scholarship, particularly in genetics and in ancient archaeology. And so, we start with mitochondrial Eve 200,000 years ago – from whom we are all descended – and then we go to the migration of the human community from East Africa 80 to 50,000 years ago. And then, we cut down to Egypt and Nubia about 3000 BC, and we end on March 1st, 1896.

And why do we end there? Because that’s when the king of Ethiopia, the emperor Menelik II, takes a replica of the Ark of the Covenant – because the Ethiopians, as we all should know, believed that the true Ark of the Covenant is in St. Mary’s Church in Axum in Ethiopia – onto the plains of Adwa and defeats the invading Ethiopian Army, and that’s where we end. I wanted to end on a high note because after that, African history goes downhill.

What keeps you pursuing the histories of individuals and, as in this case, entire cultures in the programs you make for PBS?

In my day job, I’m a teacher, and one of the reasons I love making documentaries with PBS is they can be used to change the curriculum.

What my dream is, and our collective dream, is that this will be used in high schools and colleges to teach the way African history and African civilization really unfolded ... and to challenge the myths of Tarzan and Ramar of the Jungle and Sheena that we all still have in our minds. We are all walking around with Dark Continent mythologies in our head, so we are trying to reinscribe a new narrative, and do it accurately and honestly.

Guy Pearce of “When We Rise” on ABC

“Well, not a lot of TV, but ‘Veep.’ I just watched the final – well I’m assuming it’s the final, but it’s the last one that they made – season of ‘Veep.’ I just watched all of that on the plane on the way over here. Absolutely love it. I watch ‘Family Guy’ in sort of random, little moments because I find it great escapism (laughs).”

Philip Winchester of “Chicago Justice” on NBC

“This is how far behind I am: I just finished watching the second season of ‘The Fall.’ It’s a formula, but the way that the British do it, it’s so well-done and the writing is so phenomenal. And we watched ‘Catastrophe’ recently because we have a little girl, so that became very relevant ... and the ones I want to catch up on are ‘The Crown’ and ‘The Affair.’ ”

Luke Arnold of “Black Sails” on Starz

Buddy Valastro of “Bakers vs. Fakers” on Food Network

“I’d say ‘Rick & Morty’ is probably my number one goto. There’s so much good TV out there that just trying to catch up with it all can be tough but that’s a show that I like multiple viewings of because it cracks me up. It’s some of the silliest writing, it’s also some of the smartest writing on TV. And ‘The Night Of’ this year absolutely blew my mind. ... I think it took me a week to get through the first episode because I found it so tense that I’d keep turning it off and not wanting to see the next part because it was affecting me so much. And it’s great to have such a visceral reaction to a TV show like that.”

“My guilty pleasures are ‘Homeland,’ ‘Shameless.’ I do record my own shows (laughs), believe it or not, because I’m not always home to watch it. And I do record ‘Cooks vs. Cons.’ ”

It’s now the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series as NASCAR has a new title sponsor for 2017. But defending Cup champion Jimmie Johnson will only have Victory Lane on his mind when the Daytona 500 begins Sunday, February 26 on Fox. With last season’s championship, Johnson tied racing legends Richard Petty and Dale Earnhardt with seven each, and thus has a chance this season, or any other in his racing career, to establish a new record eighth Cup championship.

Before Johnson burst on the scene in 2002, many thought it would be his Hendrick Motorsports teammate, Jeff Gordon who would catch Earnhardt and Petty. But Johnson caught fire and ran off a record five straight Cup titles from 2006 through 2010. He added another in 2013 and of course, last season.

Winning seven titles doesn’t come without consistency, and while Johnson has won over the years at most of racing’s classic tracks, Daytona has also been somewhat friendly to him. He won the Daytona 500 in both 2006 and 2013 and also the Coke Zero 400 in the summer of 2013. He’s won a pair of Can-Am Duels (formerly the Twin 125’s) and also what’s now called the Advance Auto Parts Clash, Daytona’s preliminary race, in 2005.

Now another long NASCAR season begins, with the sport’s biggest race of the season set to kick it off. Every driver starts with a clean slate and as this season progresses it could get real interesting if Johnson is within spitting distance of that record eighth title.

Checking in with CLIVE STANDEN

Net Picks

When it comes to representing a younger Liam Neeson, you could say Clive Standen was taken with the idea.

The “Vikings” alum assumes Neeson’s movie role as Bryan Mills in NBC’s series version of “Taken,” a prequel to the action-film franchise that premieres Monday, Feb. 27. The show traces Mills’ post-military roots as a CIA operative, fueled by a personal tragedy that has made him hungry for revenge. With “Taken” filmmaker Luc Besson among the executive producers, the drama also features “Flashdance” icon Jennifer Beals as the government official overseeing Mills as he grows into the extremely resourceful agent moviegoers know.

“Bryan Mills is just a man,” Standen says in comparing the character to such other action heroes as James Bond and Jason Bourne, “and in the (original) film, we see a man who is a father who is chasing after his daughter. You don’t have to be a father to relate to this man.

“You want him to succeed, and when he trips and fails and falls down, you want him to get back up. And as an audience member, you’re pretty much pulling him up and forcing him through that door going, ‘He’s gotta find his daughter.’ Otherwise, there is no sense of humanity in the world.”

Standen insists he’s not trying to play Neeson in taking on “Taken”: “We can watch a character every week and build with him and watch him learn from his mistakes, because I’ve got no interest in playing Liam Neeson’s character in the film. He’s the finished product. He’s this man with a particular set of skills. This is about how he acquires them, and I think it’s going to be a roller coaster of a ride, with lots of ebbs and flows and twists and turns.”

Birthdate: July 22, 1981

Birthplace: County Down, Northern Ireland

Current residence: London, England

Marital status: Married; has three children

Other television credits include: “Vikings,” “Atlantis,” “Camelot,” “Robin Hood,” “Doctor Who,” “Doctors,” “Tom Brown’s Schooldays,” “Waking the Dead,” “Ten Days to DDay”

Movie credits include: “Everest,” “Hammer of the Gods,” “Namastey London,” “Heroes and Villains”

On having played so many historic roles: “My childhood was all about running, jumping, climbing trees. We had a back wall, and we had fields and forests behind us. I’d jump over that wall at 4:00, and I wouldn’t come in until my parents were coming out with a torch trying to find me, because I’d already broke the rule and come back after dark. That’s what it was about, so it just inspires you.” Favorite movie: “There are so many. I couldn’t pick one and stick by it ... but I watched ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’ again recently, and it would be up there for sure. Charlie Kaufman’s script is a bit of a crazy masterpiece, and director Michel Gondry is an expert at making things jump out of the screen without using CGI. Plus, it’s one of the most romantic films I have ever seen.”

Favorite television series you’re not on: “I love ‘Quantum Leap.’ I was allowed to stay up and watch it with my older brother Lee when I was a kid, and have really fond memories of tuning in to see Sam Beckett ‘putting right what once went wrong!”’

Favorite singer: “Without question or hesitation, Elvis Presley. They don’t call him ‘The King’ for nothing.”

“National Treasure,” www.hulu.com/nationaltreasure

Dropping Wednesday, this four-part serial drama from across the pond stars “Harry Potter” series regular Robbie Coltrane as Paul Finchley, half of a popular comedy duo, whose world is thrown into chaos when he’s accused of sexual abuse. The impressive cast also features Julie Walters (“Brave”), Andrea Riseborough (“Bloodline”) and Tim McInnerny (“Eddie the Eagle”).

“Code of a Killer,” acorn. tv/codeofakiller

From the creative minds behind “Broadchurch” and “Line of Duty” comes this three-part British miniseries that tells the true story of how a brilliant scientist and progressive police detective teamed up to create the biggest advance in modern criminal investigation: DNA fingerprinting. David Threlfall (“Ripper Street”) and John Simm (“Life on Mars”) star in this series that drops Monday.

“(un)balanced,” unbalancedwebseries.com

Megan MacPhee (“Pinkalicious”) created, wrote and stars in this five-episode comedy series about a young woman trying to find her center amid her own conflicting beliefs and the insanity that is living in New York City. The cast includes stage actors Rob McClure (“Honeymoon in Vegas”), Daisy Hobbs (“Aladdin”) and Vishal Vaidya (“Groundhog Day”).

“Mideast Minute,” www.cc.com/shows/mideast-minute

Sri Lankan-born Canadian actor/comic/director/writer Pardis Parker is the creative force behind this satirical series on the Comedy Central website, in which he stars as a grossly misinformed anchor for an American news network feeding U.S. propaganda to Middle Eastern viewers. In the opening episode, his character Jamsheed al-Jamsheedi attempts to dissuade Middle Easterners from immigrating to this country.

Best Bets

SUNDAY

1 p.m. on KOKI

2017 Daytona 500

“Drivers... start your engines” as another NASCAR racing season is about to begin with Monster Energy as the new title sponsor and the Great American Race. It’s the 59th running of the Daytona 500 from Daytona International Speedway in Daytona Beach, Florida. NASCAR’s biggest race of the year is also the first in what is the longest season in professional sports. Denny Hamlin won last year’s race while reigning champion Jimmie Johnson targets a record eighth Cup championship.

7:30 p.m. on KTUL

The Oscars

From their appearances on his late-night show, Jimmy Kimmel knows many of the celebrities who will be in attendance, so he should get away with lots of jabs as he plays first-time host for the movie industry’s big event at the Dolby Theatre in the heart of Hollywood. “La La Land” leads the nominees with 14 bids, followed by “Arrival” and “Moonlight” with eight each. Last year’s top winners, including Leonardo DiCaprio and Brie Larson, will be back as presenters.

9 p.m. on HBO Girls

In a new episode called “American Bitch,” Hannah (Lena Dunham) has a very tense (see episode title) conversation with Chuck Palmer (guest star Matthew Rhys, “The Americans”), a critically acclaimed author she once greatly admired, about some very disturbing allegations that currently are swirling around him. Allison Williams and Zosia Mamet also star.

MONDAY

7 p.m. on KQCW Supergirl

A former television Superman, guest star Dean Cain reprises the role of Jeremiah Danvers in the new episode “Homecoming.” The character is saved from Cadmus, leading to his reunion with daughters Kara and Alex (Melissa Benoist, Chyler Leigh) — but the joy over his return is marred by Mon-El’s (Chris Wood) hunch that things aren’t what they seem. Jeremy Jordan and David Harewood also star.

8 p.m. on KTUL When We Rise

Written by Oscar winner Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”), this new miniseries dramatizes the true stories of members of the LGBTQ community whose activism has impacted gay rights. Guy Pearce (“L.A. Confidential”), Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds”) and Rachel Griffiths have the central roles, with Whoopi Goldberg, Rosie O’Donnell, Kevin McHale (“Glee”), Pauley Perrette (“NCIS”) and David Hyde Pierce among others featured. The saga continues Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

8 p.m. on KOED Africa’s Great Civilizations

Though he often focuses his television work on individuals’ genealogy, Henry Louis Gates Jr. considers an entire culture in this new three-part miniseries. He begins in locations such as Kenya and Egypt with “Origins,” tracing the roots and early migration of Homo sapiens and proceeding through the evolution of Islam. Then, in “The Cross and the Crescent,” Gates recalls the development of Christianity and Islam, plus African religious figures.

9 p.m. on KJRH Taken

The Liam Neeson action-movie franchise gets a television variation with the premiere of this drama, also from filmmaker Luc Besson and casting Clive Standen (“Vikings”) as central character Bryan Mills in his younger years. After serving as a Green Beret, Mills tries to exorcise his hunger for personal revenge by going to work for the CIA and using his very special — and very lethal — set of skills. Jennifer Beals and Michael Irby also star in the “Pilot.”

TUESDAY

7 p.m. on KOED Finding Your Roots

Music veterans LL Cool J and Sean Combs are no strangers to the public, thanks to their bounty of activities — reaffirmed in the case of the “NCIS: Los Angeles” co-star by his hosting of the Grammy Awards in previous years — but rarely are they seen in the light “Family Reunions” casts them in. Henry Louis Gates Jr. uses the results of DNA tests to inform them about their heritage, generating reactions likely to surprise fans of the two personalities.

8 p.m. on KJRH KOKI KOTV KTUL Presidential Address

Most of the broadcast and all of the cable news networks cover President Donald Trump’s first address to a joint session of Congress, which is a yearly tradition of holding the nation’s highest office. Given that the current chief executive came from outside the political spectrum, this could be a speech like none of its type before, a point that various anchors and commentators are sure to make. The Democratic Party’s response follows immediately.

9 p.m. on FX Taboo

There were more than a few people who dismissed this period thriller as a vanity project for star and creator Tom Hardy, but given he was fresh off his Oscar-nominated turn in “The Revenant,” few would argue he doesn’t deserve to show off. In the Season 1 finale, the Prince Regent (Mark Gatiss, who moonlights as a writer on ‘Sherlock”) reaches the end of his rope and sets into play one last scheme he hopes will destroy James Delaney (Hardy).

WEDNESDAY

8 p.m. on KTUL When We Rise

In the second part of the new miniseries about the roots of the LBGTQ rights movement, a 1978 battle against Proposition 8 — which would prohibit gays from public-school employment in California — is waged by Cleve Jones, Ken Jones and Roma Guy (Guy Pearce, Michael K. Williams, Mary-Louise Parker). The fate of San Francisco politician Harvey Milk (the subject of an Oscar-winning film written by this project’s Dustin Lance Black) becomes a rallying cry.

8 p.m. on KOED Africa’s Great Civilizations Henry Louis Gates Jr.’s latest program continues as “Empires of Gold” examines how trade and education turned North and West Africa into thriving centers of wealth and learning. The segment’s second hour, “Cities,” visits precisely such locales — including Kilwa, Great Zimbabwe and Benin City — that helped foster a rise in art and industry, making the African continent increasingly promising and appealing to European interests.

9 p.m. on KJRH Chicago Justice

The “preview” premiere of this drama, normally to be seen Sundays, concludes a story started on “Chicago Fire” and “Chicago P.D.” In “Fake,” prosecuting attorney Peter Stone (Philip Winchester) — the son of “Law & Order’s” Ben Stone — opposes a cunning defense lawyer (guest star Bradley Whitford, “The West Wing”) in seeking justice for the victims of a devastating fire at a warehouse turned work space. Carl Weathers, Jon Seda and Joelle Carter also star.

9 p.m. on SPIKE, BET

Time: The Kalief Browder Story

Music mogul Shawn “Jay Z” Carter is an executive producer on this new six-part documentary, in which filmmaker Jenner Furst reviews the shocking saga of a Bronx teenager who was picked up by police in 2010 on suspicions of stealing a backpack. He subsequently spent more than 1,000 days in Riker’s Island prison, 800 of them in solitary confinement, before being released without ever being convicted. In addition to Browder himself, the series includes insights from politicians, journalists and justice-system reformers.

THURSDAY

7 p.m. on KTUL When We Rise: The People Behind the Story

Airing in conjunction with this week’s miniseries about several pioneers of the LBGTQ rights movement, this new documentary showcases the actual people on whom the dramatic project is based. Cleve Jones, Roma Guy, Ken Jones, Diane Jones and Cecilia Chung discuss their experiences, and the actors who portray them — including Guy Pearce, Mary-Louise Parker and Rachel Griffiths — also comment. The overall history of gay rights is considered as well during the hour.

8 p.m. on KTUL When We Rise

The penultimate portion of the new four-part miniseries deals largely with the AIDS crisis of the early 1990s, with Cleve Jones (Guy Pearce) among those who have contracted the disease. That doesn’t stop him from initiating the Names Project AIDS Memorial quilt. Roma and Diane (MaryLouise Parker, Rachel Griffiths) are prompted to find the father of Diane’s daughter, leading to a surprising discovery. David Hyde Pierce, Dylan Walsh and T.R. Knight also appear.

8 p.m. on A&E 60 Days In

There’s likely to be no dearth of gripping human stories as the series opens its third season by moving into Atlanta’s Fulton County Jail, where five times the number of inmates in previous seasons are incarcerated. As the new season opens, nine innocent civilian participants working undercover are dispatched to infiltrate the facility. Among them: a special-education teacher who works with at-risk youth and a former corrections officer who wants to see what it is like when the roles are reversed.

8 p.m. on STARZ Movie: Making a Killing: Guns, Greed, and the NRA

As the title of his previous film “Outfoxed: Rupert Murdoch’s War on Journalism” hints, Robert Greenwald’s films have a progressiveactivist perspective, and this latest documentary — which explores how the brisk sale of guns affects everyday Americans — is no ex-

ception. Among Greenwald’s points: The public motivation of the National Rifle Association may be keeping Americans safe, but privately, the NRA’s main goal is to encourage people to buy more weapons.

9 p.m. on KJRH

The Blacklist: Redemption

The fate of an American reporter, who has long-standing ties to Scottie (Famke Janssen) and her family, is in the hands of the team in the new episode “Kevin Jensen.” He’s been arrested overseas and accused of espionage, making time of the essence in freeing him from his captors. Ryan Eggold, Edi Gathegi, Tawny Cypress and Adrian Martinez also star.

9 p.m. on KOTV Training Day

Fearing he’ll never solve his father’s murder if Frank (Bill Paxton) ends up incarcerated because of an internal police probe, Kyle (Justin Cornwell) tries to help clear the rogue partner he’s been investigating himself in the new episode “Wages of Sin.” Guest stars include Jeff Fahey, Emma Caulfield and W. Earl Brown (“American Crime”). Katrina Law, Drew Van Acker and Marianne Jean-Baptiste also star.

FRIDAY

7 p.m. on KOTV MacGyver

MacGyver (Lucas Till) is the target of an international hit man (guest star David Dastmalchian) in “Corkscrew,” a title that describes what he has at his disposal against the assassin. Oh, and a roll of paper towels — with Bozer (Justin Hires) also in the killer’s line of fire, and upset by new information he learns about MacGyver. Tracy Spiridakos returns as the hero’s duplicitous ex-flame Nikki. George Eads and Sandrine Holt also star.

8 p.m. on KJRH Emerald City

As anyone who knows the fable of Oz is aware, there’s “No Place Like Home” for Dorothy (Adria Arjona), as the title of the season finale episode confirms. Before she can get back there, though, she must end the Wizard’s (Vincent D’Onofrio) siege of the magical land.
